Sure, we must address the "reversible" causes, but what about ACLS/compressions/epinephrine? Which patients are exceptions to the rules? Lindsey had a tough case, asked some hard questions, and will provide solid answers—our favorite recipe for a jam-packed educational session. REFERENCES 1. Witt, C. E., Shatz, D. V., Robinson, B. R. In this completely singular, nothing-else-of-its-kind anthology, these artists write (and illustrate!) from a place of collective loss and joy.Featuring work by: Doan Bui, Thi Bui, H'Rina DeTroy, Anna Moï, Hoài Huong Nguyen, Vaan Nguyen, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud, Bao Phi, Paul Tran, and Vu Tran. This week (September 8th to 14th) is National Suicide Prevention Week. Deaths by suicide in young people have risen by more than 60% in recent decades. And in 2022, it was the second leading cause of death for people aged 10-14.  Behind that tragic statistic is a lot of nuance, though.  For example: Alaska Natives, American Indians, and White youth are more likely to take their own lives than their Asian American peers. But researchers say even that statistic masks the reality of suicide rates in Asian American young people, and that rates vary greatly by subgroup.  Soundside spoke with Dr. Anthony L. Bui, lead author of a study that looked at suicide rates in Asian American youth. Dr. Bui is also an acting assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a researcher at the Seattle Children's Research Institute. He believes that by better understanding the background of individuals at risk, we can develop culturally specific and more effective approaches to youth mental health care. Dr. Bui's study was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics.  During our conversation Dr. Bui noted the importance of reaching out to professionals like school therapists when you are concerned about the youth in your life.  Soundside called up one of those school-based, child mental health specialists -- Ana Short -- to learn more about what culturally appropriate health care for young people may look like in practice. Guests: Dr. Anthony L Bui, acting assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.  Ana Short, child mental health specialist with International Community Health Services.  Related Links:  Suicide rates differ in subgroups of young Asian Americans - UW Medicine | Newsroom  More Asian young people are dying by suicide — and some subgroups are faring worse than others (nbcnews.com)  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Maricopa County judge has sentenced a 35-year-old man to spend more than two decades behind bars. The sentencing stems from a 2020 road rage incident in Arizona, where the man, identified as Frank Martin Lawrence III, fatally attacked another motorist after a dispute on the road. The victim, James William Ackerman Jr., lost his life in the altercation while his girlfriend, Carlyn Bui , was assaulted by Lawrence. According to authorities, the incident unfolded on the night of January 11, 2020, when Bui was preparing to make a left turn, Lawrence, who was driving a white Dodge pickup truck, “veered into her lane, causing Bui to honk.” Following the confrontation, Lawrence pursued the couple to their apartment, approximately 20 miles southeast of Phoenix, where he unleashed a series of violent actions. Lawrence approached Bui's vehicle and proceeded to reach into her car through an open window, striking her in the face while she remained secured by her seatbelt inside her car. Lawrence then returned to his vehicle and began to drive away. Prosecutors stated that Ackerman exited the couple's vehicle to get the defendant's license plate. Lawrence then made a U-turn, passing by the couple once more before executing a second U-turn, hitting Ackerman. As a result, Ackerman was propelled onto the sidewalk, landing on his head. According to records, Lawrence departed the scene without offering aid or notifying authorities. Ackerman was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Subsequent search warrants revealed emails from an account linked to Lawrence, in which the sender sought to return vehicle components for the same truck implicated in the incident. The sender clarified that the parts were being returned because the vehicle had been reported stolen. Lawrence pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for Ackerman's death and aggravated assault for his attack on Bui. The court subsequently ordered him to serve a sentence of 25 years in a state correctional facility. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Is it Legal to Drink a Beer on a Boat?

Carolina Outdoors

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2024 3:52

S4, June 22nd, 2024 The question of "Can you legally drink a beer on a boat in North Carolina"?  Host of the Carolina Outdoors, Bill Bartee, answers it.  Listen in to learn what the rules are & what you may need this summer when out on an area lake.Show Highlights: In North Carolina, the rules and regulations regarding drinking alcohol, including beer, on a boat are designed to ensure safety on the water. These laws align closely with the principles of operating any vehicle under the influence but include specifics relevant to maritime activities. Legal Framework and Enforcement Alcohol Consumption on Boats: It is legal to have and consume alcohol on a boat in North Carolina. Passengers are permitted to drink beer or other alcoholic beverages while the boat is in operation. However, there are strict rules for the person operating the boat. The operator must remain sober and within the legal limits for blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Boating Under the Influence (BUI): Similar to driving a car, operating a boat while impaired by alcohol or drugs is illegal. The legal BAC limit for boat operators is 0.08%. If an operator is found to be at or above this limit, they can be charged with BUI. Penalties for BUI can include fines, imprisonment, and the suspension of boating privileges. The exact penalties depend on the severity of the offense and whether it is a repeat offense. Safety Considerations and Requirements Safety Equipment: Boats must carry certain safety equipment, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and visual distress signals. Having alcohol on board does not change these requirements. It is essential for boaters to ensure that all safety equipment is readily accessible and in good working condition. Sobriety of Operator: The boat operator must maintain a clear head and ensure they are capable of operating the boat safely. This includes not only adhering to the BAC limit but also being vigilant and attentive to changing conditions on the water. The presence of alcohol on board increases the responsibility of the operator to manage the conduct of passengers and ensure that no one's behavior jeopardizes safety. Law Enforcement and Checks Random Checks and Testing: Law enforcement officers, such as those from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, have the authority to stop and check boats on the water. During these checks, officers can conduct sobriety tests on the operator if there is suspicion of alcohol impairment. Consequences of BUI: The consequences of being caught boating under the influence can be severe. First-time offenders might face fines, community service, mandatory boating safety courses, and jail time. Repeat offenders or those involved in accidents while under the influence can face harsher penalties, including longer jail sentences and higher fines. Practical Advice Designate a Sober Operator: It is wise to designate a sober boat operator before heading out on the water. This person should abstain from drinking alcohol and be responsible for the boat's operation throughout the trip. Consumption Limits: Passengers should consume alcohol responsibly to avoid any dangerous behavior that could lead to accidents or fall overboard situations. Awareness and Education: Boaters should educate themselves on the local boating laws and safety practices. Participating in boating safety courses can be beneficial. Conclusion While it is legal to drink beer and other alcoholic beverages on a boat in North Carolina, strict rules govern the operator's sobriety to ensure safety on the water. Violations of these rules can result in serious legal consequences and endanger everyone on board. Therefore, responsible consumption and adherence to safety regulations are crucial for a safe and enjoyable boating experience.

Kevin Bui of Colorado has admitted to setting fire to a family's home in the dead of night, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a toddler and an infant. This act was fueled by Bui's mistaken belief that the family was responsible for stealing his cell phone, a belief which turned out to be unfounded. Prosecutors alleged that Bui led a trio of arsonists and utilized the "Find My iPhone" app to trace his stolen phone's location to the vicinity of the victims' home in 2020. However, their investigation revealed that the house Bui targeted was not the right house, resulting in tragic consequences. What began as a misguided pursuit ended in a coordinated arson attack, claiming the lives of five Senegalese family members, including two infants, in a fire that ravaged the area in 2020. Now, Kevin Huy Bui, at the age of 20, has pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder related to the deaths of the family members. In a solemn courtroom appearance on Friday, 20-year-old Kevin Bui formally admitted to his role in the horrific slayings of Djibril Diol  , his wife Adja, their daughter Khadija , Diol's sister Hassan, and her daughter Hawa Beye, Bui's plea deal with prosecutors secures a 60-year sentence in a state correctional facility, sparing him from an additional 60 criminal charges. The fatal blaze, ignited by Bui and two accomplices, Gavin Seymour and Dillon Siebert, claimed the lives of five victims while three others narrowly escaped by leaping from a second-floor window. Bui, believed to be the mastermind, initiated weeks of planning for the retaliatory arson. Armed with containers of gasoline and hockey-style masks, the trio broke into the home, doused it with accelerant, and fled as the flames consumed the property. Surveillance footage and cell phone location data incriminated Bui, Seymour, and Siebert, leading to their arrest in January 2021. While Seymour, then 16, accepted a 40-year sentence after pleading guilty, Siebert, only 14 at the time, received a combined sentence of three years in juvenile detention and seven years in state prison for his involvement. During Friday's court proceedings, Bui remained largely silent, offering only brief responses to inquiries from Judge Karen Brody. Notably absent from the courtroom were any family members of the victims, who opted to witness the proceedings remotely via livestream. Kevin Huy Bui's sentencing is slated for July 2. A Maricopa County judge has sentenced a 35-year-old man to spend more than two decades behind bars. The sentencing stems from a 2020 road rage incident in Arizona, where the man, identified as Frank Martin Lawrence III, fatally attacked another motorist after a dispute on the road. The victim, James William Ackerman Jr., lost his life in the altercation while his girlfriend, Carlyn Bui [BOO-ee], was assaulted by Lawrence. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell condemned Lawrence's actions, emphasizing that road rage cannot be tolerated. Mitchell stated, "This defendant's out-of-control behavior cost the life of an innocent victim. Road rage is a criminal offense that happens all too often in our state." In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Capucine van Rechem from Stanford University about her work on the impact of chromatin modifiers on disease development and progression. During her postdoctoral work, Capucine van Rechem studied the effects of Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in KDM4A on lung cancer cell lines and discovered a link between KDM4A and mTOR. She found that cells with the SNP had decreased KDM4A levels and increased sensitivity to inhibitors of the translation pathway. In addition, she found that a combination of histone marks was more predictive of replication timing than RNA expression alone, and identified the specific stages of the cell cycle where KDM4 primarily acts. Now in her own lab, the focus of her work shifted to SWI-SNF. The team has discovered the role of SWI-SNF in translation through polysome profiling and confirmed the interaction between SWI-SNF and translation. They are currently working to understand the functions of different complexes in translation and their connection to transcription.

This is episode 2 in my mini series all about building community within a school group, classroom or homeschool (psst... you also need to focus on building community within your family group too!). In this episode I share my thoughts, ideas and suggestions about building community among the adults in the children's lives. I share they reasons why building community is so important and how to build and maintain community among the adults. Because our focus in education should be the child, it is imperative that the adults take care of themselves and are the best models for the child on how to relate, learn and care for ones self and their community. As always, thank you for listening! Please feel free to always reach out, ask my questions and let me know if there is a specific topic pertaining to Montessori, child development or teaching you'd like to hear discussed on the LTF podcast.

In "Building My New Cleaning Network I", I shared my marketing strategy from the summer of 2018 after moving back to the Philadelphia Area. I was scrappy and willing to knock on doors to say, "Hi, my name is Ken Carfagno." My friend Kevin Lacombe did the same thing in his new solo cleaning business when I was coaching him in late 2018. I knocked on 13 doors in the same town where my first new office was located. It worked! I had a few interested companies and one hired me! We then moved our family to another part of the suburbs and wanted to attract new clients. I followed the same strategy of knocking on doors, except I added a personalized piece to my information drop-offs and follow up process that I got from my friend Gustavo Fernandez. He showed me a few ways to stand out and I implemented them. In the month of May 2019, I knocked on 25 doors and generated a few interested prospects. Again, one hired me.  I would have continued this guerilla marketing approach each month to add one new customer each month. But it didn't sit right with me. I realized that I needed to serve the community and create a name for myself. Thus, I poured into my newest customer and became friends with his family. We started meeting for breakfast to connect, pray, and mastermind together. That's Mr. Dennis Gehman of Gehman Design Remodeling in Harleysville, PA. I've mentioned his name a dozen times on this podcast because he was that much of a help to me! We still meet for breakfast to connect, pray, and mastermind. This process taught me a huge lesson. I wanted to change my approach from cold door-knocking to attracting warm leads. The only way to do that was through service.  Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

This episode was recorded in October 2019 as I launched my new cleaning business in the Philadelphia Area. We are so accustomed to turning on the faucet and immediately getting water. But that's not how it worked for our early settlers. They had to dig water wells and later, water pumps. They had to put in the work first to build the system for obtaining water. That's what this Best-Of illustrates. I had to prime the pump or dig the well. It's called building your network. Your network is your net worth. This episode and the next are meant to bring you back to the foundation of my current 6-figure commercial cleaning business that just allowed my family to go to Florida for a month! Pay attention to the seeds and small decisions I made to dig my water well. After these two Best-Of episodes, I'll share an update episode to show how the seeds from this 2019 work turned into a harvest in 2020 and 2021.
