Oil up those muscles and sharpen your sword because we are going on an epic journey in a time long ago, when sorcerers, warriors, and fantasy ruled the cinema. Journey with Jay and Shua as they look at classic sword and sorcery movies. Conan the Barbarian has been around for almost 90 years, but 40 years ago the character was brought to life by Arnold Schwarzenegger, early in his career. This movie inspired a plethora of other stories throughout the 80's. Conan the Barbarian made his live action debut in 1984 with a John Milius production of the same name. This was not Schwarzenneger's first film, but it definitely put him on the road to stardom. Despite some of it's dated effects and slow pace, it is a beautiful, fantasy epic. There were a bevy of Sword and Sorcery films after the success of Conan. But we saw a few in a similar genre before. Disney films like The Sword in the Stone (1963) and the Harryhausen creations like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and its sequels and Clash of the Titans (1981). Marc Singer brought a different type of barbarian to the fantasy world. His character of Dar in Beastmaster (1982) had the ability to connect and communicate with animals that helped him defeat the evil sorcerer played by Rip Taylor. Oops! I mean Rip Torn. Fantasy lends itself to such a wide variety of movies such as The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and a rare, early Disney PG movie called Dragonslayer (1981). These kept the interest in these types of mythical worlds. Excalibur (1981) was a medieval tale of King Arthur that brought the ancient tale to the modern screen. It also inspired some cool artwork from Shua's father. Fire and Ice (1983) featured rotoscoping animation from Ralph Bakshi. These are just a tiny sampling of this genre that was so popular during the 80s. There were so many more! Are you a fan of Sword and Sorcery films? What type do you like? Did you read all the way to the bottom? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Now we are dead!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. 052 - After a few deep cuts we are taking it back to our bread and butter with the film that changed the future of both James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzegger. Schwarzenneger would become the kind of Hollywood, and Cameron would become, self-proclaimed, 'king of the world' marrying several Hollywood women along the way (two of which came from this very movie). In all seriousness though, it's too easy to take this franchise for granted, with at least 3 too many sequels contaminating the public consciousness - but it's important to look back at where it all began, and what a fundamentally different movie this one actually was, vs where the franchise has ended up. Join us as we dive into the films origin story, cultural analysis, circular chats around time travel, and what we would argue is a half-decent re-pitch for how this franchise could have been better tackled as a clean little trilogy.
Jingle All the Way is a 1996 American family comedy[3] film directed by Brian Levant and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad as two rival fathers, workaholic Howard Langston (Schwarzenegger) and stressed out postal worker Myron Larabee (Sinbad), both desperately trying to get a Turbo-Man action figure for their respective sons on a last minute shopping spree on Christmas Eve.

Eric Poulin, host of the political podcast The People's Soapbox, takes a look at the classic 1988 action movie Die Hard, asking what its development and continued popularity tell us American cultural--both then and now. Also, Eric and I discover something shady as we're preparing the episode to air... This is the first part of a double feature on action movies and American culture (and one piece of a half-season mini-arc concerning the ethics of adaptation).
