Back from the holiday break, Byrd and Matt set their sights on Ray Harryhausen's classic series of Sinbad films; the 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1957), the Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) are still among the most celebrated fantasy films of all time.  After getting tired of monsters tearing down landmarks, stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen decided to make a different kind of monster movie by drawing inspiration from the Arabian Nights folktales of Sinbad, a sailor who would go on swashbuckling adventures and fight monsters, sorcerers and more.  We discuss the history of these influential films, and discuss how they hold up all these years later.  We talk Cyclops, dragons, centaurs, troglodytes, and more!  Relax and enjoy the conversation!

Get outta here Harryhausen, there's a new stop motioneer here, namely director Robert Morgan with his 2023 film ‘Stopmotion'. Forget about the California Raisins, Wallace & Gromit, and Yukon Cornelius, those are for last millennium's children. Kids these days like their stop motion like their chicken nuggets, gross and meaty, and this has meat for days. But is just having meaty puppets enough to make a film good, or does it also need things like believable characters and non-played out tropes?

In Nate and Elijah's epic triple birthday celebration with Ray Harryhausen (“Yours, Mine, and Ray's”), they continue their annual crossover with The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973). While they're going in reverse chronological order, they agree with this is a “step up” from Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, which they discussed last year. It helps that it has the incredible Tom Baker (of Doctor Who fame) as the villain and the eye candy that is Caroline Munro. The film also has a cameo by Robert Shaw (Quint from Jaws) in a Shakespearean role. Nate and Elijah discuss how the film reflects changing attitudes toward racial and gender equality in the early 1970s and the symbolic freedom of the sea. They even get into a couple of “Toku Topics,” like the literary origins of Sinbad the Sailor and a lawsuit this film was a part of. Release the Kraken! Twice!Clash of the Titans had been an idea since the late 1950s, with writer Beverley Cross writing a treatment in 1969 called Perseus and the Gorgon's Head. At the time, producer Charles H. Schneer and legendary animator Ray Harryhausen were working on other films, and so what became Clash of the Titans would have to wait until 1977 to start pre-production.It would eventually release in 1981 and include not only one of Harryhausen's most memorable creatures, Medusa, but also signal the beginning of the end of his career. Clash of the Titans would be his final film, in part thanks to a scathing review.Clash of the Titans would inevitably be remade one day, and that remake fell to Louis Leterrier, and new writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, using an original script by Travis Beacham based on Cross' original script. Updated to modern audiences' needs for big budgets, big-name actors and huge CG spectacle, Warner Bros would notice the huge 3D revolution started by James Cameron's Avatar, and decided to convert Clash of the Titans to 3D in post-production... Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more.     Enjoy Movies!  Don't stop-motion believin'! In 1933 a 13 year old Ray Harryhausen saw the movie King Kong and it forever changed the way we would experience movies. It inspired him to experiment in techniques of stop motion animation that he would continually improve throughout his entire career.    His impressive resume includes classics like Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, and of course Clash of the Titans. Many of his movies aren't even remembered for who starred in or directed them, but for Ray's special effects. His patented Dynamation technique of incorporating his stop motion creatures enhanced all these movies in a way that made you feel like you were part of the dream.    Countless creators were inspired by Ray's effects, such as Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, and of course the man who carried the mantle, visual effects legend Phil Tippett. Their movies continued to evolve Ray's techniques including how CGI even works today. We are all indebted to Mr. Harryhausen and are grateful for his work.  Which of Ray Harryhausen's works do you like? Have you ever made a stop motion movie? Byrd and Matt talk about Ray Harryhausen's classic dinosaur Western, the Valley of Gwangi!  It tells the story of some showmen and a scientist who go on an expedition into a valley in Mexico to find a prehistoric miniature horse.  What they also find is a flesh craving Allosaurus.  They bring it back to put it on display for the public and well... things don't go so well.  We'll discuss the history of the film, dating back to Willis O'Brien's failed attempts to get it made in the 1940s, the differences between O'Brien's version and Harryhausen's completed film, the lasting influence of Gwangi, the stop motion effects, and whether or not we think it holds up.  Relax and join the conversation!

How does the last film to feature Harryhausen's stop-motion effects hold up in 2023? Does it matter if they are considered outdated, or are they still effective with modern audiences? Due to having a decade between their respective ages, the hosts spend a lot of the conversation relating their experience with the film, and if when they first saw it had an impact on how they view it now, as well as just gushing over the effort behind the effects work, regardless of how old it is. Also, several listener comments (including a Apple Podcasts review!) and what they've both watched as of late are talked about. Pat Sweeney, or is it Mike Sweeney? There's really no way to be sure. Pat grew up in Manhattan Beach, California. He is an identical twin. Pat went with his brothers and sisters to the local catholic school and loved watching old movies on tv growing up. He saw all the Harryhausen films, King Kong, and was a fan of the original Star Trek. For college Pat knew he wanted to study film. He enrolled with his brother Mike at Loyola Marymount University in their film and tv program. While in school he got a chance to try various roles and even made a few short films. After college Pat was working at a car rental place to make ends meet when his brother Mike got a job as a production assistant at a fledgling visual effects company in Van Nuys that was working on a little movie called Star Wars. Shortly after that Pat was hired by Rose Duignan to work as a night watchman. After the Star Wars team moved up to Marin for Empire, Pat came to work as a camera assistant at Apogee on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. From there he went to work for Roger Corman on Battle Beyond the Stars where he worked with a young James Cameron. He worked for several years in Los Angeles and when a call came to come work on ET at ILM in San Rafael he took the leap. Pat worked at ILM for 25 years shooting elements for major effects sequences in Return of the Jedi, Temple of Doom, The Hunt for Red October, the Pirates films, the Transformers, and so many more. During my time at ILM Pat would often be in the motion control stage in D-building solving problems and shooting elements. He has a great sense of humor and it was always great fun to work with him. It was so much fun to catch up with him and hear about his incredible career.

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” jumps ahead 50 years, but as you'll hear, the (in)famous Cloverfield has a lot in common with the classic 1950s films we've been covering. Nate's longtime friend Nick Hayden drops by to discuss this movie because he's loved it ever since he first experienced it in a theater—and it is an experience. Too much of one for some people, in fact! While it's popular to hate on Cloverfield in the kaiju fandom, it popularized the “found footage” genre and launched J.J. Abrams' studio, Bad Robot Productions. To the shock of some of Nate's friends, he says this is the closest the United States has come to producing a Godzilla (1954). How and why? The Toku Topic helps explain that: the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Before this, Nate meets with Dr. Nick Tatopoulos on the Heat Seeker to discuss recent events. Nate learns Cameron Winter is covering his tracks, so Nate tells Nick he's thinking of taking Mr. Gold's promotion so he can spy on Winter. Afterward, Nate goes to Mr. Gold's office to discuss the offer—only to be interrogated about Jessica's shenanigans with the Ymir's escape on Harryhausen's birthday. Check out Nick's website (http://worksofnick.com/) and his podcast, Derailed Trains of Thought (http://derailedtrainsofthought.com/). Nate and his friend Elijah “The Littlest Gatekeeper” Thomas start a new annual tradition for their podcasts, The Monster Island Film Vault and Kaiju Conversation, respectively, by discussing a Ray Harryhausen film every year. Why? Because they both share a birthday with the special effects legend. Also, since these two are weird, they're going in reverse filmography order, starting with the original Clash of the Titans. This epic adventure was a relic when it came out, but given Harryhausen's romantic love of the past and love of the classics, it's not surprising. Your hosts dive deep into this film's production—Arnold Schwarzenegger was nearly the lead?!—and discuss the many incredible mythological creatures that appear in it. As Harryhausen's best friend, the author Ray Bradbury, said, Medusa in this film is Harryhausen's “crowning glory.” Just forgive Elijah for being a bit snobby about it. Happy birthday, Ray! Hello, kaiju lovers! MIFV's season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, wouldn't be complete without some Ray Harryhausen, so Nate invited both of his “co-hosts in kamen” (ba-dum-tsh!) to discuss 20 Million Miles to Earth. (Yes, Jimmy reminds Nate that he got his chronology wrong, because this film was released in 1957 and The Blob was 1958. Oops!). Harryhausen super-fans Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton, co-hosts of the Kaiju Weekly podcast, join Nate in a chat that veers perilously close to derailing at multiple points. Jet lag will do that to you, especially when flying to the Island in the Rad Bug. Regardless, 20 Million Miles was Harryhausen's first truly iconic film, paving the way for his fantasy epics that followed. The intrepid Jimmy From NASA keeps trying to tell his story about seeing a herd of Ymir on their native Venus, but nobody cares. The Toku Topic is the Soviet side of the Space Race since this film begins with a rocket ship crash and was released several months before the launch of Sputnik I. Be prepared for many (bad) Russian accents! To compete with this broadcast, Cameron Winter did a livestream where he sent one of his Cyber-Flies to track down the Ymir so he could be put on display for the film's anniversary and Harryhausen's birthday in June. Winter rambles about seemingly random things while doing so. Special thanks to J.P. Gant for helping to edit this episode! Follow him on Twitter: @Homebrewed_SD (https://tinyurl.com/2jpc36r5). Oil up those muscles and sharpen your sword because we are going on an epic journey in a time long ago, when sorcerers, warriors, and fantasy ruled the cinema. Journey with Jay and Shua as they look at classic sword and sorcery movies.   Conan the Barbarian has been around for almost 90 years, but 40 years ago the character was brought to life by Arnold Schwarzenegger, early in his career. This movie inspired a plethora of other stories throughout the 80's. Mount those horses and journey to a forgotten age with Enjoy Stuff   News Transformers Optimus Prime has been turned into an epic LEGO set Christopher Walken joins Dune: Part 2 Get ready to learn half the battle when GI Joe gets a special screening courtesy of Fathom Events In a couple years we will get a follow up to This Is Spinal Tap Congratulations to Jovial Jay as his essay about 45 Years of Star Wars Expanded Universe Fiction is published in Bare-Bones #10 Make sure to check the boys out as guests on Podcast Stardust discussing Attack of the Clones What we're Enjoying Now that Jay has revisited Attack of the Clones, he couldn't help but watch Revenge of the Sith too. This week he stretches his muscles to keep up with Jean Claude Van Damme in the 1994 flick Timecop. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Moon Knight locations and soon, more Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.    Enjoy movies! Conan the Barbarian made his live action debut in 1984 with a John Milius production of the same name. This was not Schwarzenneger's first film, but it definitely put him on the road to stardom. Despite some of it's dated effects and slow pace, it is a beautiful, fantasy epic.    There were a bevy of Sword and Sorcery films after the success of Conan. But we saw a few in a similar genre before. Disney films like The Sword in the Stone (1963) and the Harryhausen creations like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and its sequels and Clash of the Titans (1981).    Marc Singer brought a different type of barbarian to the fantasy world. His character of Dar in Beastmaster (1982) had the ability to connect and communicate with animals that helped him defeat the evil sorcerer played by Rip Taylor.  Oops! I mean Rip Torn.    Fantasy lends itself to such a wide variety of movies such as The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and a rare, early Disney PG movie called Dragonslayer (1981). These kept the interest in these types of mythical worlds.    Excalibur (1981) was a medieval tale of King Arthur that brought the ancient tale to the modern screen. It also inspired some cool artwork from Shua's father. Fire and Ice (1983) featured rotoscoping animation from Ralph Bakshi. These are just a tiny sampling of this genre that was so popular during the 80s. There were so many more!   Are you a fan of Sword and Sorcery films? What type do you like? Did you read all the way to the bottom? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Now we are dead!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. In the first episode of my Heroes Through the Decades miniseries, I'm starting in the sixties, and the crowing jewel of Ray Harryhausen's stellar career, with his trademark glorious stop-motion creature set pieces, in a movie I grew up watching - Jason and the Argonauts. Jason may be the hero on-screen, but Harryhausen is the hero behind it. From its basis in the Greek myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece, to Ray Harryhausen's early career and the influence he had seeing King Kong (1933) to becoming the protégé of Willis H. O'Brien (the animator of King Kong), Harryhausen would end up surpassing his mentor in every way and became a one-man behemoth of Hollywood visual effects, influencing Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, amongst others. This episode was so much fun to put together and will definitely not be my last foray into the work of Harryhausen, a man who irrevocably changed Hollywood and defined the modern blockbuster in more ways than one.
