“...I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known,” -Colossians 1:25 ESV
This is from our This Changes Everything series on the book of Colossians. Stephen Watson, co-lead pastor, is preaching on suffering. In Col. 1:24, Paul says that he is glad in the midst of his suffering. How is the possible? We all suffer at one time or another and thankfully the Bible has good news to share with us.

Paul explains that he is linked to Christ, for the sake of Jesus’ church expanding to all nations… and that means having the power of God, united with hard work and suffering. As Christians today, we need to realize the power that comes from Christ IN US… and fully embrace the suffering, the struggle, and the hard work of sharing the Gospel and making disciples of all nations.

Most people when they think of church or someone says church their minds goes straight to a building located in some place, but when Jesus mentions a church He is not talking about a building, he is talking about the redeemed/saved people who are His followers.

The great commission is the mission before us. It's not that we don't know the mission, but sometimes we need a reminder of how we fulfill the mission.
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body...
Paul's passion was to present everyone blameless, to God.
These studies are from our current series, both Wednesday evening and Sunday mornings.

Those who are effective know their purpose - they have a vision of who they are becoming and what God has called them to do. To be effective as a church, we must all be on mission, understanding what God has called us to be and do.

This week, Pastor Jerry spoke on the true meaning of Salvation. For some Christians, the goal of salvation is to escape from Hell. However, in Colossians, Paul talks about the glorious riches that are available to us in the here and now. And while being in Heaven is a great part of our life with God- or will be, depending on who you ask- it is not even close to the fullness that Jesus can bring to our lives today.

We exist for the praise of the glory of God’s grace in Christ Jesus. Everything we do as a church must bring glory to God in the name of Christ Jesus. We are an intergenerational church. We strive to make a seamless journey of faith from birth to old age. We are overtly trinitarian. We are always looking for the work of the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. We value people. We present the ideal of God’s plan while embracing the reality of life.

We believe Jesus Christ lives in every believer… 24 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness— 26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:24-27 16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 1 Corinthians 2:16 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 1 Corinthians 6:19 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8:9-11 so that every believer may be made perfect in Him. 28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me. Colossians 1:28-29 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 2 Timothy 1:13-14 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25

The Christian life does not promise the avoidance of suffering, but gives hope in the midst of it. Paul exhorts the Colossian church by proclaiming the revelation of Jesus as the hope of glory. Knowing the greatness of that hope is a safeguard from being swayed by anything else. Colossians 1:24-2:5.
The culture in the USA is flawed, fallen, falling, and failing - the answer is not found in the things we think it is...The answer is found only in Jesus.
