I don’t know if you saw it this week but the National Restaurant Association decided to postpone their show, yet again. This means that the soonest they will be getting together as a conference will be 2022. Who would have guessed that one year ago! On the flip side, living here in Orlando, White Castle is in the process of building their largest “castle” and before they opened, they decided to launch a ghost kitchen to feed the need of everybody craving their food. In just a few hours they had to shut it down due to demand. A few days later, they opened it up again only to permanently close down their ghost kitchen until their restaurant fully opens. They are going to KILL IT here in Orlando!!! We had Mike and Susan from White Castle on a couple of months again and they are both rock stars in the industry. Speaking or Rockstars, let’s get into today’s episode. We know we should “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) but what does that look like from day-to-day? It’s one thing to practice gratitude one day a year, but let’s carry this practice in our families, workplaces, and communities. Here are three ways to get in the habit of thanksgiving: Conversational gratitude - talk to others about what you’re thankful for every week. A good way to do this is by talking about the highs and lows you’ve had throughout the week. You can also get in the habit of singling out one person everyday and sincerely thank them for being a gift. Interior gratitude - cultivate an interior practice of thankfulness everyday, especially when it comes to hardships and challenges, because God gives us everything for a purpose—to sanctify our souls. Eucharistic gratitude - “eucharist” literally means “thank offering.” Offer up your gratitude to God at each and every sacrifice of the Mass. Snippet from the Show “As soon as an intentional practice of gratitude becomes a prayer, it becomes apparent to us that our very existence is a gift, that we are loved, and that everything we are going through is an opportunity to be more united with Christ.”
Fr. Josh answers questions about how to forgive deep wounds caused by family members, what to do if you’ve grown bored with prayer, and what are some prayers we can say for souls in purgatory. If you have a question, comment, or response for Fr. Josh, email us at askfrjosh@ascensionpress.com. You may hear your question or comment in an upcoming podcast episode! Snippet from the Show “As people were actively attacking Jesus on the cross—mocking him, cursing him, spitting on him—he said, ‘Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ He still felt hurt, betrayed, abandoned, and rejected, but he chose to turn that into intercession.” SHOWNOTES Glory Story (1:36) Fr. Josh discovered this song: Spirit Lead Me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ko4yroBP0A) by Influence Music & Michael Ketterer! Listener Feedback (3:52) Forgiving Deep Wounds Caused by Family (10:49) Hello Fr. Josh. Thank you, first of all, for all you do. I stumbled upon your podcast and it is helping me examine things in myself that I otherwise wouldn’t have. It’s from this self reflection that this question came forth. I am struggling to forgive my family for their treatment of me, my new husband, and our new baby daughter. I was married previously to a man who abused me for five years, to the point that I had our priest telling me I was unsafe and giving me the resources to leave. My family, however, refuses to accept that I was right on leaving because I “shamed the family” by getting divorced. They still talk to and invite my ex husband to family functions on a regular basis. Nearly a year after the divorce and subsequent annulment, I met a wonderful man. He accepted my two previous children as his own and has been so patient with me. He is a Christ loving man who has shown me what love in a sacramental marriage should be. I had tolerated their behavior regarding me and my husband, but now their behavior affects my children. I had our daughter at 24 weeks gestation. Thanks be to God, she is now nine months old and doing very well all things considered. I have a large family. Aside from my parents and maternal grandparents, everyone in my family has refused to acknowledge her, much less meet her. We spent 143 days in the NICU and needed the support of family desperately. My family has refused. My husbands family has done everything humanly possible, with my mother in law staying with us for all but a month of our NICU stay to help with the older two children. They (the older children) have been asking why the family that used to be so present is ignoring us. I know an apology will likely never occur, so I am struggling how to forgive my family. How do I forgive when offenses have been so deeply felt? -Anonymous Mother Praying for the Souls in Purgatory (21:14) Hi Father Josh! I'm trying to figure out the right way to pray for souls in purgatory. Since I can't know (unless one of them is beatified) whether my family members who have died are in heaven, I don't know who exactly to pray for. But it feels exclusive just to pray "for my family in purgatory." It feels like if I'm being that general, I should just pray "for all souls in purgatory." But if I don't call them out by name, does it count or count less? Thanks for your help, Father, and all the good work you do! -Tamar Tired of Praying (28:20) Hello Father Josh, I listen to your podcast a lot, and I really like it. Thank you for the work you do. I am a junior in college, just striving to live out the Catholic faith. Earlier this year (January) I listened to a ton of talks on Mary, the power of the Rosary and all of that. I was strongly convicted to pray the Rosary more often. I made a decision to pray the Rosary everyday. I had made decisions like this in the past with reading my Bible, and other forms of prayers but after a month, that all disappeared into thin air. However, with the Rosary I have been pretty much consistent in praying it. So here’s the issue. Father Josh, honestly, on some days I am just exhausted, and really just don’t feel like praying the Rosary or any prayer in general. Although I still pray it, I often rush through it, or my mind wanders off occasionally, or I doze off in between. Frankly, sometimes I just pray it to keep my streak. I tell myself I have come too far to give up now. I don’t want to waste my time (or Jesus’s or Mary’s time). I feel like if it has become a game to me, or just really mechanical then I should stop. Still, I like to believe I receive some graces when I strive through it, even when I don’t feel like it or when I’m just doing it to fulfill all righteousness. I’m scared that if I stop now, I’m never going to have the courage to take up any other challenge to strengthen my prayer life. I may just give up this whole prayer thing in general, because Father, I’m legit tired, confused and need some advice. Thank you. -Legit Tired Resources Want to browse the previous resources Fr. My daughter got married last weekend, and despite all the planning that goes into weddings, we survived! In fact, I enjoyed it! I am so grateful to God for the gift of this blessed event and all that we enjoyed in the process of planning and hosting. When I shared photos on Facebook and Instagram, many people asked me to do a podcast about wedding planning … so here you go! Snippet from the Show “As you’re planning a wedding, it’s important to lean on Mary ... She is such an understanding, consoling, compassionate mother. In those moments when we’re tempted to stress about things we know we shouldn’t, she’s very helpful in calming our stressed out souls.” SHOWNOTES Here are my un-professional thoughts from a mother-of-the-bride: 1) There are no “have-to’s” So many times, the pressure we feel to do things a “certain way” or to meet other people’s expectations is completely unnecessary. I encourage you to examine what things you feel pressured to do and consider letting go of things that are not meaningful or that you cannot reasonably afford. There are no “have-to’s” about wedding receptions. 2) Focus on the sacrament Of course there are some “have to’s” about a Catholic wedding ceremony, and I encourage you to focus there. On the beautiful gift of grace the couple is receiving in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Focusing there has a way of keeping all the other stuff in perspective. 3) Talk to Mama Mary Our Lady demonstrated a special kind of loving care about weddings and the stress they can entail through her words and actions at the wedding at Cana. Focus on the role she played in that story and then entrust her with all of your own wedding-related anxieties. Ask Mother Mary to intercede for you with regard to all the details you might be stressing about, but also ask her to help you maintain proper perspective about stuff that does not matter. 4) Invite helpers From the decorations to the favors to the cake to the music, there are lots of ways others can pitch in and help you with planning a fun celebration without breaking the budget or freaking out with the stress of the whole thing. Ask others to help! Many of your friends and family will be honored to play a role in making your day special while taking some of the financial and emotional stress off of you. 5) Feel all the feelings Weddings are emotional events! As you are planning your special day or your child’s special day, or participating in a friend or sibling’s special day, you will have some bittersweet feelings. Don’t hide from them! Don’t deny them! Allow yourself to feel them and share them with others in appropriate ways. Doing so as you plan will help you emotionally prepare for the big event and allow you to enjoy the moment of the special day even more. This week, I also share feedback from listener Teresa who shares some inspiring and encouraging ideas for ways to make good habits stick. Her excellent feedback is like a mini podcast within a podcast and you will not want to miss what she shares! We take a look at the cult favourite Space Jam and the fan theory: ‘In Space Jam, Bill Murray Shatters the Multiverse’. That Space Jam fan theory is one of many that Joe and Anthony propose in this episode of Abstract Nonsense the Fan Theories and Alternate Readings Podcast. Listen to this episode and expand your mind! === What is the Show? As explained by Joe === A massive movie, one of the biggest movies ever covered on the show, that’s right it’s Space Jam baby! Are you ready for this? (Cue music). Space Jam is an enormous film from your childhood, it was so big that they got Michael Jordan (someone who has not acted in another film since)...that’s how big this film is. What’s all the focus on size for? I hear you ask dear listener, that is because this movie is predicated on the premise that short aliens are terrible at Basketball, an assertion proven true when the aliens steal powers from real life basketball players in order to compete fairly against the aliens. The short aliens invade the Looney Tunes because they want new attractions for their theme park on the moon. In order to win, the Looney Tunes enlist the help of Michael Jordan to fight the aliens and of course his friend Bill Murray, it’s a Space Jam and the future of Looney Tune world depends on the success of Cartoon characters, Michael Jordan and Bill Murray. === Space Jam Fan Theories === 1st Space Jam Fan Theory [6:00] ‘Space Jam demonstrates the woes of Capitalism’ A Space Jam Fan Theory from Reddit, written by the Reddit user Bananashammock. The theory argues that the head alien in Space Jam is the embodiment of capitalism, similar to Captain Planet’s Hoggish Greedly. This embodiment of capitalism attempts to exploit the Looney Tunes because, in their mind, they are a race of people who are able to be exploited and so by the mantra of survival of the fittest, the aliens should exploit these people and from their point of view, they are morally justified in doing so. Joe and Anthony then discuss how this movie would have turned out differently had the Looney Tunes & Michael Jordan seized the means of production. 2nd Space Jam Fan Theory [10:08] ‘Space Jam is in the same universe as Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ A Space Jam Fan Theory from Reddit, written by the Reddit user HPWuvcraft. This fan theory argues that the Space Jam universe and the ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ universe is one and the same. 3rd Space Jam Fan Theory [13:45] ‘Space Jam is about the modern exploitation of African American’ Joe argues in this theory, that Space Jam is portraying the modern exploitation of African Americans. The theory draws on similar themes presented in the horror film ‘Get Out’, where the central theme of that movie was the commodification and exploitation of African Americans as cultural objects. Space Jam sets up that like the Looney Tunes, Michael Jordan purpose in this film is to entertain us; he is not allowed a private life. Like the Looney Tunes, when a commercial cultural object begins to bore mainstream society, we shun them away in a separate society (because we have grown tired of them). This parallels the consumption of exoticised African American culture and how the dominant racial class (white people) are likely to cast aside this culture once they have finished consuming it of all its value. Space Jam is being avant garde in its portrayal of race, trying to mirror how mainstream culture consumes cultures of minority groups and that by seeing this portrayal, we as consumers should avoid continuing our exploitation of other people’s culture and start seeing people of other races and backgrounds not as cultural objects, but as people. 4th Space Jam Fan Theory [18:33] ‘In Space Jam, Bill Murray has fractured the multiverse’ Joe presents a theory that ties together Space Jam and the Bill Murray film Ghostbusters. In Ghostbusters, when they cross the streams to defeat the bad guy, that fractures the multiverse. In the Multiverse, there are multiple Bill Murray's, and after the streams are crossed, this causes the havoc, where the Looney Tunes universe and our universe collide; resulting in the Space Jam universe. This explains why in Space Jam, Bill Murray can travel between the multiverses. 5th Space Jam Fan Theory [25:50] ‘In the Looney Toon universe, the cartoon powers are triggered by violence’ Joe presents his theory on why cartoons have superpowers in the Looney Toon world and why at the end Michael Jordan can stretch out his arm, and it all has to do with violence. In the Looney Tune land, their special cartoon powers appear to be intrinsically linked to violent actions. 6th Space Jam Fan Theory [27:23] ‘The Looney Tunes only exists because of Michael Jordan’ In the final theory, we present how the Looney Tunes were willed into existence in Space Jam by Michael Jordan and maybe Bill Murray. As brief as possible, the Looney Tunes are Tulpas. === All In his Head === Anthony: ‘All of Space Jam happens because he is hit in the head by Newmann’s Golf Ball, and just dreams/hallucinates the whole thing’ === Subscribe and Listen to other episodes === Subscribe to us on iTune and get new shows instantly & check out our website https://www.fantheoriespodcast.com for all of our other fan theories and episodes. === Contribute Your Fan Theories === Join Fans of Abstract Nonsense on Facebook to share your Fan Theories, or email any Fan Theories you have to our email yourtheories@fantheoriespodcast.com and we’ll read them out on the show. We take a look at the classic TV show Home Improvement the fan theory: ‘Why We Never See Wilson from Home Improvements Face’. That Home Improvement fan theory is one of many that Joe and Anthony propose in this episode of Abstract Nonsense the Fan Theories and Alternate Readings Podcast. Listen to this episode and expand your mind! === What is the Show? As explained by Joe === Home Improvement is the sitcom where Tim Allen plays himself and his character has an obsession with tools and all things manly & phallic. He has a family, with a lot of sons and a wife and a neighbor called Wilson (whose face we never see); who all help him engage in antics, as Tim does family things but also where he has to go away to his job on a TV set, where he is a TV presenter for tools and times. === Home Improvement Fan Theories === 1st Home Improvement Fan Theory [3:15] The reason why you never see Home Improvement’s Wilson’s Face is because he is in the Witness Protection program. Anthony argues that Wilson’s wife was involved in an unintentional drive-by shooting, caused by the Gangsta Disciples. In exchange for his testimony to convict the leaders of the gang, he was placed in the Witness protection program. Now Wilson waits in Detroit under a fake name until he is given the all clear. We never see Home Improvement’s Wilson’s face as Tim (his neighbor) is a local celebrity and media may be close by waiting to take photos of Tim. If Wilson ever shows his face, an unfortunate photo from the paparazzi may cost him his life. Some Evidence Put Forward Dr. Wilson W Wilson Jr. Ph.D. is clearly a fake name Wilson is an incredibly learned man in a field of study that is quite obscure, his education is well above the statistical average for Detroit Being born in Chicago, it is highly likely he attended and graduated from University of Michigan Ann Arbor Chicago is well known for its gang violence 2nd Home Improvement Fan Theory: [8:54] Tool Time is a Codeword FAN SUBMISSION - Sent in by Darren to Abstract Nonsense’s Email. Darren believes that Tool Time is a codeword for either smoking drugs or engaging in homosexual acts. 3rd Home Improvement Fan Theory: [11:38] Wilson is Your Dad FAN SUBMISSION - Sent in by Madeline to Abstract Nonsense’s Email. Madeline argues that Home Improvement’s Wilson is the biological father of some or all of Tim’s kids, and the reason we don’t see Wilson’s face is to avoid the children seeing the similarities in their own appearance and Wilson. This theory also explains why Tim is so macho. It’s because he is compensating for his lack of virility. Great fan theory from Madeline. 4th Home Improvement Fan Theory: [14:30] Home Improvement is a Satirical Portrayal of 21st American Consumer Capitalism Anthony argues that the setup for every Home Improvement episode is designed to mirror the cyclical and destructive lifestyle of Americanism & 21st Consumer Capitalism (at least from Anti-Consumer Capitalist perspective). In the show, Tim is the surrogate viewer, who like many American’s aspires to improve their own life. The use of power tools on Tool Time and the inevitable screw up by Tim is symbolic of Western Consumers aspiring for lacking qualities in their life, using a brand to get those qualities and then feeling empty and shallow after consumption. The conversations between Tim and Wilson are meant to mirror post-consumption guilt and the seeking of religious or spiritual absolution for a consumer's sin. Wilson is both a therapist and a priest all in one, dishing out great advice. Tim takes this advice, but because of his addiction to consumption; this advice is corrupted and he becomes enslaved to the cycle of: aspire, consume, guilt, absolve - repeat. 5th Home Improvement Fan Theory: [26:50] Tim Allen Saves The UniverseFAN SUBMISSION - Sent in by Jean to Abstract Nonsense’s Email. This theory incorporates the 1999 Galaxy quest and Home Improvement; and how the universe basically revolves around Tim Allen FAN SUBMISSION - Sent in by Jean to Abstract Nonsense’s Email. This theory incorporates the 1999 Galaxy quest and Home Improvement; and how the universe basically revolves around Tim Allen 6th Home Improvement Fan Theory: [29:55] Tim Intentional Screws Up to Keep Al from Succeeding. In this theory, Anthony argues that the reason why Tim Allen constantly screws up on Tool Time is because he doesn’t want the show to get to popular. Tim fears that if the show gets too popular, then agents from National companies will pick up the show and the first thing they will do is get rid of Tim (because Al is by far the superior handyman). By screwing up the show, Tim assures that ratings remain at 3rd - 4th position on local cable and thus the show will never take off nationally, securing his job and masculinity. === Subscribe and Listen to other episodes === Subscribe to us on iTune and get new shows instantly & check out our website https://www.fantheoriespodcast.com for all of our other fan theories and episodes. === Contribute Your Fan Theories === Join Fans of Abstract Nonsense on Facebook to share your Fan Theories, or email any Fan Theories you have to our email yourtheories@fantheoriespodcast.com and we’ll read them out on the show. Peter Horton (Thirtysomething, Grey's Anatomy) talks about his journey from musician to actor to a director and writer/producer of film and television. We Talk About Finally agreeing to act in "Thirtysomething" Writing and producing "American Odyssey" for Netflix Directing the pilot for "Grey's Anatomy" and producing the first three seasons The best kind of actors out there A new project for Cinemax set in the future Quotes from the Show “(As a director,) you can never ask for an effect because you’re just sabotaging your actor. You have to be able to say, “It feels like the stakes aren’t as high as they need to be here. Can you find a way to make the stakes higher?” So, then you’re giving it back to them, and they can give you what you need.” “I find the best actors have a real ego about what they’re doing. The they have a real take on it, too. They come in having really done their homework, having really embodied this character, so that they know them better than I do... they go deep with their work.” “There are so many great shows out there that don’t necessarily immediately suggest story. I think with the advent of serialized shows, it’s a little harder to identify that as something that obviously has legs. You can always make anything have legs if you’re a good enough writer these days.”
