Now making her Broadway debut, she brings a deeply personal perspective to her role, exploring themes of language, identity, and cultural assimilation. She shares the challenges of switching between accents on stage, how her family's journey shaped her artistic path, and why she's fiercely selective about the roles she takes. With humor, insight, and vulnerability, Tala offers a thoughtful perspective on storytelling, advocacy, and what it truly means to find your voice. The mid-twentieth century was not only a time when some of the greatest jazz music was created. It was also a period when many African American musicians converted to Islam. By the 1940s, there was a variety of different versions of the faith from which to choose in America. The Ahmadiyya movement had arrived in the United States around 1920; the Nation of Islam had emerged out of Moorish Science a decade later; and by the 1940s different currents of Sunni Islam had been introduced to port cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. By the 1950s and 60s, those ports became gateways to a wider world—to the Middle East and Africa—as African American Muslims set out on musical, religious, and political pilgrimages among their coreligionists overseas. In this episode, we'll be following those journeys by the likes of Art Blakey, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Yusuf Lateef, as well as Malcolm X and the great John Coltrane. “The book was originally a memoir about coming to America - my history and how it connects to what's happening right now. Trump sounds just like the things Castro said — this is pretty dangerous.” Edel Rodriguez is a Cuban American artist, activist and author who's created more than 200 magazine covers for the likes of Time, The New Yorker, Newsweek and Der Spiegel - which are singular and striking given our current political climate. Edel's latest work is the graphic memoir "Worm: A Cuban American Odyssey" - telling the story of his childhood in Cuba and his family's decision in 1980 to join a hazardous flotilla of refugees, the Mariel boatlift. This may be one of the best (comic) books Raman read in 2023, so naturally we reached out for a chat. In WORM - which is a term Castro used for Cubans who chose to leave the country - Edel uses his own life to capture what it's like to grow up under an authoritarian government and to sound a caution - from the runup to the 2016 US election to January 6, 2020 — to the future we are facing THIS election year. In our conversation we go deep into - and beyond Edel's personal story - to get at the why for his activism and storytelling approach... 1991's Black Robe is probably a movie you've never heard of, but maybe you should. It's one of the rare films that travel back to 17th Century New France to allow us to witness interactions between Indigenous communities and Jesuit missionaries. I watched this film in college and it made an impression on me. So I asked Michael Oberg to come on the pod to talk not only about this film but about how to teach this film as well as point out the complicated relationships between people during the era. This is maybe a bit more cerebral episode than some of the others, and I hope you like it.About our guest:Michael Leroy Oberg, the author of Native America, is Distinguished Professor of History at SUNY-Geneseo and founder of the Geneseo Center for Local and Municipal History, which he directed from 2019 until 2022. In addition to this textbook, he has written the following works: Dominion and Civility: English Imperialism and Native America, 1585-1685 (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1999); Uncas: First of the Mohegans, (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2003); Samuel Wiseman's Book of Record: The Official Account of Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia, (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2005); The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand: Roanoke's Forgotten Indians, (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2007); the first edition of Native America; Professional Indian: Eleazer Williams's American Odyssey, (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015); and Peacemakers: The Iroquois, the United States, and the Treaty of Canandaigua, 1794, (New York: Oxford University Press, 2015). He has published, as well, articles and reviews, and has worked as a historical consultant for native communities in New York and North Carolina, as well as for the Indian Resources Section of the United States Department of Justice. He has won awards for his teaching and research in Montana and in New York, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In 1964, at the age of 51, Richard E. Harris became the first Black reporter at The Arizona Republic. His tenure came during a momentous and tumultuous period in our nation’s history. The year before, thousands were arrested while protesting segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. Among them was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would deliver his famed “I Have A Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that same year. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The following year, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Phoenix was segregated at the time. Years of redlining and restrictive covenants had left their mark on the city. Harris was assigned to cover poverty in the city, telling the story of some of its most vulnerable citizens. Later in life, Harris wrote that he “detested some of the paper’s ultra-conservative editorials and stories slanted in favor of the Establishment.” Still, he was proud of his tenure there and what he accomplished. In his 2004 autobiography "The American Odyssey of a Black Journalist," Harris wrote that he “proved to be as capable as most white peers and soon found news stories outside the stereotype bounds.” Today, Harris is remembered by those who came after him as a modest, humble man. “And what I’d like to say about Richard Harris is that, you know, he wasn’t a physically large guy. But he had very broad shoulders, figuratively speaking,” said Art Gissendaner, who worked as the sole Black reporter at The Republic a decade after Harris. “And something I tell a lot of young people now is that where we are now, we all are standing on someone else’s shoulders.” In this week’s episode of Valley 101, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, Executive Editor Greg Burton explores the story of Harris’ life and legacy.
(Photo Credit: Nate Ptacek) Happy 2021!! Here's to a blank slate full of possibilities, happiness, and all the awesome goals we've set! I am very honored to chat with National Geographic's 2014 Adventurer's of the Year, environmentalists, explorers, and educators Dave and Amy Freeman! "Since 2001 they have traveled over 30,000 miles by kayak, canoe, and dogsled through some of the world's wildest places, from the Amazon to the Arctic." In 2015 they spent the entire year living in and exploring the Boundary Waters in Minnesota by canoe and dogsled to help raise awareness of this beautifully pristine and protect it from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining. You can read all about their experience in their book "A Year in the Wilderness". In this episode we chat all about their adventure in the boundary waters along with their North American Odyssey, a 3 year quest that took them from the west coast all the way to Alaska and then across the continent down to Florida. We also chat a bit about canoeing in the Amazon and how it compares to paddling through the Arctic. This is a really awesome episode to start the year and I am extremely grateful for both Dave and Amy for sitting down and sharing some adventure stories with us!! Let's have a great year!! Today on Too Opinionated we speak with actor/singer Michael Devine. Actor Michael Devine is a name to remember with his versatile acting capabilities and wide-ranging talent. Michael can currently be seen portraying an all-too-real role in the new HBO series The Undoing. Working alongside leading actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, Michael plays the series regular role of ‘Detective Paul O’Rourke’. As a real-life, recently retired Detective Sergeant for the New York Police Department (NYPD), Michael brings a realness to the role, touching on past experiences in law enforcement. The weekly six episode mini-series premiered on Oct 25th. With a long-standing career behind him, Michael can also be seen playing law enforcement roles in other notable films and television shows such as: The Wolf of Wall Street, Law & Order, Blue Bloods, Mozart in the Jungle, American Odyssey, Orange Is the New Black, Big Time Adolescence, The Post, and Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us (a series that brings awareness to the root of the Black Lives Matter movement). Most notably though, Michael played the series regular role of ‘James Tech Padgett’ in CBS’ Limitless. Michael was actually a 3rd generation policeman – and lost his father in the line of duty. During Michael’s own fourth year as a policeman, he experienced the catastrophic events of 9/11. He was posted up at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral for most of the day doing surveillance work, and headed over to Ground Zero towards the end of the day to provide extra support. He spent 22-years in total working for the NYPD – of which 12-years were spent working for the Chief of Detectives Office – and was most recently staffed to relay information to the press. Michael retired from the NYPD this year to focus on his blooming acting career. While growing up in Clifton, New Jersey, Michael found an alternative passion for music and acting – for which he has had 16 years of success in the industry. In 2011, his fondness for music led him to release an album entitled ‘Songs of Valor and Hope,’ which landed at #1 in four different categories on Amazon Music. With Irish influences and tones similar to that of Josh Groban, the album consists of a collection of cover songs such as “Ave Maria,” “Hallelujah,” “Amazing Grace” and many more treasured classics. Michael has had the honor of performing his music at Madison Square Garden, Rainbow Room and Lincoln Center – and served as the NYPD’s National Anthem soloist. Aside from singing, he also plays the bagpipes. He is currently working on creating a new album, and hopes to one day be cast in a Broadway production. With his powerful story, moving voice and stacked resume, it’s clear that Michael has become one to watch in Hollywood. Want to watch? YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

Scott Teems grew up and went to Film School in Georgia, and he is best known for early work with Hal Holbrook on ‘That Evening Sun’ (along with producing Holbrook in the Mark Twin story ‘An American Odyssey’), plus episodes of ‘Rectify’ and ‘Narcos: Mexico,’ and the new film ‘The Quarry.’ The co-writer and director of ‘The Quarry,’ Teems uncovers the story of a drifter, played by Shea Whigham, who kills a traveling preacher and takes his place in a small-town church. But, upon his arrival, the police chief, played by Michael Shannon, suspects something is wrong. Teems is heavily influenced by Eastern European and Polish cinema (but more so towards the Coen Brothers for his latest film). And, he has a writing credit on the upcoming film, ‘Halloween Kills,’ the latest installment of the Michael Myers franchise. In this interview, we discuss personal Southern stories, how Georgia became a film hub, why he’s intrigued by religion and violence in story, where to find exterior tension in a story, why he hates agenda-driven stories, and what audiences can expect from Halloween Kills. Michael Meade returns to the epic tale of The Odyssey in order to bring a mythic lens to the recent impeachment trial and to the troubled state of our democracy in its aftermath. The scenes in which the young prince laments the loss of nobility and justice in the land and gives a speech before the “congress of usurpers”, seems to prefigure as well as underscore our current crisis. Uncovering the root meanings of words such as senate, authority, authenticity, and deliberate show us how much we have lost and how far we must go in our own, collective odyssey. Michael Meade takes up the issues of the current impeachment trial from the ground of the epic tale of the Odyssey. He shows how a "nobility gap" and a loss of authenticity have led to abdication of duty and a lack of courage amongst those entrusted with the public good. In the ancient story, Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom appears at a critical time when disorder and injustice have taken over core cultural institutions. The old story serves as a reminder of the origins of democracy in ancient Athens and the importance of wisdom if truth and meaning are to be found again. Thank you for listening to this podcast. In the U.S., The Mummy was relegated to second place behind Warner Bros.' box-office sensation Wonder Woman, which fell a scant 45 percent in its second weekend to $57.2 million from 4,165 theaters. That's one of the lowest drops ever for a superhero tentpole. Generally speaking, a superhero film can fall 60 percent. Barnum on the CW super series. The Titanic star will appear in one episode. Executive producer Phil Klemperer has offered up a detailed description of the role that also offers insight on what's in store for season 3: “Obviously, we couldn't resist putting Victor Garber and Billy Zane back on screen for the first time since the TITANIC. But I've wanted to bring Billy onto LEGENDS every since I saw him in a friend's comedy pilot. I'm not sure that people know how funny Billy is, although we cast him as P.T. Barnum because we knew that he would be able to find the soul beneath the larger-than-life showman. This season on LEGENDS, we want to meet other famous figures from history, people like Barnum, people we think we know, so that we can find the aspects of them, the parts of their story, that the history books left out — we want to bring history to life by infusing it with heart, humor, and total absurdity (often at the same time).” Link:http://ew.com/tv/2017/06/14/legends-tomorrow-billy-zane-pt-barnum/ Legends of Tomorrow adds Tala Ashe as a visitor from the future (Date: 06 June 2017) The Waverider is adding one more member to its superhero squad: American Odyssey and Smash actress Tala Ashe is joining DC's Legends of Tomorrow season 3 in a new series regular role. Ashe will portray Zari Adrianna Tomaz, a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030. In her future, technological advances have brought about significant change to civilization, but humanity's fear, prejudice, and mistreatment of the planet have prompted her to become a “grey hat hacktivist.” Tomaz may be a computer nerd, but she doesn't yet realize she holds hidden powers derived from a mystical source. Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
Today’s guest Clark Canez (LA Improviser- Power Lunch, Chaz Dean, Gosh Guys, Hemp-ire Strikes Back) and Cassi get deep into Greek Mythology! Clark proves his Dumb Nerd worthiness by knowing so much about Greek Mythology. Seriously. He schools Cassi with stories of: Chaos; the first leaders of the Universe The Titans; the castrating, baby eating King Cronus; the Cronus killing and wife cheating Zeus; Zeus’ wife and sister Hera; Hercules, the son Zeus had out of wedlock but made up his infidelity by naming Hercules after his wife, Hera; Zeus and Hera’s one eyed son Cyclops; God of Sea Poseidon; Leader of the Underworld Hades; the unwilling Queen of the Underworld Persephone and her mother, Goddess of Agriculture and winter inducing, Demeter; Rockstar Orpheus and the tragic fate of his wife Eurydice; Apollo and the cursed false prophet Cassandra; Flying-too-close-to-the-sun Icarus; Rolling-a-boulder-uphill Sisyphus; and Prometheus, the god who gave fire back to mortals and was punished by being chained to a mountain and eaten by birds for eternity. It’s fun, dark stuff! Clark and Cassi also get into the history of Greek storytelling with Homer, “The Odyssey”, the origin and function of myth and the importance of the Olympics and competition between city-states. (Why can’t sports in America be like that today?) They also get into the movie and graphic novel “300”, the differences and similarities of religions especially between Christianity and Greek Mythology, the Golden Rule, the TV shows “The Crown” and “The Tudors”, Christopher Reeves, Christopher Robin and historian, Allan Lichtman, who predicted that Donald Trump would win the presidency using his system the “13 Keys”. They also find out they both lived in Anaheim for a bit. Shout out to the Anaheim Angels and the Linbrook Bowling Alley! They also reveal Clark’s biggest secret of all: his name is not really Clark. Peter Horton (Thirtysomething, Grey's Anatomy) talks about his journey from musician to actor to a director and writer/producer of film and television. We Talk About Finally agreeing to act in "Thirtysomething" Writing and producing "American Odyssey" for Netflix Directing the pilot for "Grey's Anatomy" and producing the first three seasons The best kind of actors out there A new project for Cinemax set in the future Quotes from the Show “(As a director,) you can never ask for an effect because you’re just sabotaging your actor. You have to be able to say, “It feels like the stakes aren’t as high as they need to be here. Can you find a way to make the stakes higher?” So, then you’re giving it back to them, and they can give you what you need.” “I find the best actors have a real ego about what they’re doing. The they have a real take on it, too. They come in having really done their homework, having really embodied this character, so that they know them better than I do... they go deep with their work.” “There are so many great shows out there that don’t necessarily immediately suggest story. I think with the advent of serialized shows, it’s a little harder to identify that as something that obviously has legs. You can always make anything have legs if you’re a good enough writer these days.”

While the script "Odyssey" was renamed American Odyssey to cash in on the success of American Sniper, it wasn't compelling enough for NBC to want to continue this adventure. Subsequently the network canceled the show after the first season. Part of us is relieved at this, even though we both love this genre. But American Odyssey in the first episode already seems to go off the rails. The American Odyssey pilot takes the viewer on an incredible journey to the terrorist besieged villages of Mali, the streets of NYC, to the snowy streets of Eagleheights, Delaware (seriously?) all in an attempt to interweave a shadow conspiracy taking place between the military, the corporate entity SOC and a terrorist organization. The show is clearly a mash up of Homeland meets 24 meets The Firm meets The Net meets GI Jane meets COnspiracy Theory, meets every other political, military, internet, conspiracy movie and TV show out there. Unfortunately the show lacks logic and suffers from trying too hard, and achieving too little.
Our guest this week is Jake Robinson from NBC's American Odyssey.

New to DVD is Dollhouse, (no not that one!!), a pleasant house party where Irish people avoid the heavy drinking stereotype just long enough to skin up. We wrap up with the new Cruiser feature, Oblivion, where he outruns, outguns, and outgrins the aliens that destroyed his record collection.
