About the Guest: Dr. Michael E. Ketterer is a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Northern Arizona University. With extensive expertise in analytical chemistry and environmental analysis of radionuclides such as uranium and plutonium, Dr. Ketterer has dedicated his recent research to studying hazardous contamination from historical nuclear activities. He collaborates with various organizations to unveil significant public health and environmental threats, focusing particularly on fallout from the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Episode Summary: In this episode of "90 Miles from Needles," host Chris Clarke is joined by Dr. Michael Ketterer, a seasoned expert in analytical chemistry and environmental radioactivity. Together, they explore the often-overlooked subject of plutonium contamination in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Dr. Ketterer's in-depth research reveals shocking levels of contamination left over from Manhattan Project activities in the 1940s and onward. Living in close proximity to this historic contamination presents significant health risks, which have been largely underreported until now. Dr. Ketterer details his findings, explaining how he independently verified the presence of dangerous amounts of plutonium in water and sediment samples in Acid Canyon, a site previously deemed "cleaned up" by federal authorities. He discusses the broader environmental and public health implications, emphasizing how this hidden contamination endangers not only the local communities but also areas downstream of Los Alamos. This episode is a clarion call for greater public awareness and stricter environmental standards to protect against long-lasting radiological hazards. Key Takeaways: Undetected Contaminants: Dr. Ketterer's research uncovers significant levels of plutonium contamination in Acid Canyon, Los Alamos, contradicting official cleanup claims. Health Risks and Oversight: Federal authorities and local scientists have underestimated or dismissed the health risks presented by the historical contamination, raising concerns about regulatory oversight. Isotopic Analysis for Identification: Using isotopic analysis, Dr. Ketterer shows that the contamination traces back to early uranium processing activities from the Manhattan Project, not just global fallout. Environmental Justice Issues: Downstream communities, including Pueblo populations, face ongoing risks from long-standing contamination, underlining severe environmental justice issues. Policy Implications: The discussion advocates for the expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to include New Mexicans affected by historic nuclear activities, along with stricter regulatory standards. Notable Quotes: "It's mind-blowing to find 80 picocuries per liter of plutonium in the water. That's extremely contaminated by any standard." "The land, soil, and plants downstream are contaminated forever, affecting people who had no say in these activities." "The government's lack of an apology and acknowledgment of the damage done is a critical issue. As Americans, we should apologize to New Mexicans." "Living near a site like this requires permanent environmental monitoring. The government won't do it for you; you have to take matters into your own hands." "The goal here is awareness and public participation. People, especially younger generations, need to question the reality of their environment and demand accountability." Carolyn Harding with Michael Ketterer, PhD, an analytical chemist and Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Arizona University. We'll talk about the Portsmouth Ohio Nuclear Site, otherwise known as the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, south of Piketon, Ohio, and HOT in Energy news NOW. Michael E. Ketterer, PhD, is an analytical chemist and Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Arizona University. Michael holds a BS in Chemistry from University of Notre Dame and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado. Michael has worked in private industry, as a chemist for USEPA's Office of Enforcement, and has taught at four different Universities. Dr. Ketterer specializes in understanding the sources, transport and environmental fates of long lived radioactive contaminants, such as uranium and plutonium, near former and active nuclear sites. Michael has performed mass spectrometric studies of uranium isotopes in off-site samples near the Portsmouth Nuclear Site (PORTS) which show conclusively, using modern nuclear forensics, that the contamination originated from PORTS. The US Department of Energy has contradicted but has not disproved Dr. Ketterer's results. Michael is currently providing technical assistance to communities throughout the US affected by legacy nuclear contamination. As we near the end of our week on simple Christianity, we look today at the simple truth of our freedom in Christ. Our sin and bondage often feels like a convoluted web that entangles us. Satan would like nothing more than to keep us foggy and confused about the freedom and righteousness bought for us through the precious blood of Jesus. Today I'm praying that chains are broken in God's presence. May we gain clarity and deep understanding of the freedom afforded to us as children of God. May we adopt the simple truth of our freedom and truly be set free. Our Scripture for today comes from 2 Corinthians 3:17, and today's worship is Seasons Change by Michael Ketterer. -- When you trust Christ as your savior and Lord, you begin a relationship that extends into eternity. However, eternity doesn't start in heaven, and you don't have to wait until then to experience a full life in Christ. The truth is that we as Christians are called to invest in our relationship with God in this life as well as in the life to come. And that means becoming more like Christ every single day. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus provided a systematic ethic for how to be his disciples. It was a relatively short sermon, but God's truth in that message has never stopped reverberating throughout the world. Our latest book, The Path to Purpose delves into the timeless wisdom of Jesus' most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. St Augustine described the sermon as “a perfect standard for the Christian life.” While we may doubt ourselves from ever achieving such “a perfect standard,” Jesus' central message in his Sermon on the Mount helps us see that standard not as a burden but rather as a source of freedom, purpose, and a guide for living beautifully. Welcome to Episode 6: Scriptures and songs that encouraged us. Thank you to our growing listening community, we see your comments and feedback and we say keep it coming. Nothing in life can emotionally prepare us for the death of a loved one. Whether death results from a sudden accident or a sustained illness, it always catches us off-guard. The finality of loss and dying is personal and with every loss, grief follows, as painful as that is.. grief is necessary to our healing and we have shared that grief is messy and not embracing grief and running away from it is like running away from the one thing that can cure the pain of loss English poet and hymnodist, William Cowper, described grief itself as medicine. Grief cleanses the anguish from our souls and helps us move forward. Grieving is the process God uses to bring us to a place of wholeness. A place of recovery and it is so essential part of our healing journey. We have learned that when faced with grief, isolating yourself and grieving alone can be destructive and we say that grieving was meant to be done in community. When grief is shared, the pain becomes bearable and we encourage you to reach out talk to someone and a good place to find support is your church family, small group, a Christian support group, etc In this episode, we would be sharing how our faith helped us through this season. We also share some of the songs that comforted us. Eg Spirit lead me by Michael Ketterer. Steady my heart and you are not alone by Kari Jobe ALL things by David and Nicole Binion We also share a few scriptures that comforted us. Ps 34:18: The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 91: 2: I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!" Phil 1:21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Hab 3:17-18 Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!… Ephesian 5: 19 says we should “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.…” We pray this episode truly encourages you. We remind you that you are not alone, and encourage you to please run to God and take advantage of the community He has put you in and receive the love that he offers through people. We know that discussions around grief can be hard but we are available to help and support anyone who would require our services and you can reach us by sending us an email at hello@whenlifestops.org For more information about us go to our website http://whenlifestops.org https://www.instagram.com/stellaagwor/ https://www.instagram.com/detolaamure/ We created a playlist filled with uplifting and encouraging songs. Snippet from the Show “As people were actively attacking Jesus on the cross—mocking him, cursing him, spitting on him—he said, ‘Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.’ He still felt hurt, betrayed, abandoned, and rejected, but he chose to turn that into intercession.” SHOWNOTES Glory Story (1:36) Fr. Josh discovered this song: Spirit Lead Me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ko4yroBP0A) by Influence Music & Michael Ketterer! Listener Feedback (3:52) Forgiving Deep Wounds Caused by Family (10:49) Hello Fr. Josh. Thank you, first of all, for all you do. I stumbled upon your podcast and it is helping me examine things in myself that I otherwise wouldn’t have. It’s from this self reflection that this question came forth. I am struggling to forgive my family for their treatment of me, my new husband, and our new baby daughter. I was married previously to a man who abused me for five years, to the point that I had our priest telling me I was unsafe and giving me the resources to leave. My family, however, refuses to accept that I was right on leaving because I “shamed the family” by getting divorced. They still talk to and invite my ex husband to family functions on a regular basis. Nearly a year after the divorce and subsequent annulment, I met a wonderful man. He accepted my two previous children as his own and has been so patient with me. He is a Christ loving man who has shown me what love in a sacramental marriage should be. I had tolerated their behavior regarding me and my husband, but now their behavior affects my children. I had our daughter at 24 weeks gestation. Thanks be to God, she is now nine months old and doing very well all things considered. I have a large family. Aside from my parents and maternal grandparents, everyone in my family has refused to acknowledge her, much less meet her. We spent 143 days in the NICU and needed the support of family desperately. My family has refused. My husbands family has done everything humanly possible, with my mother in law staying with us for all but a month of our NICU stay to help with the older two children. They (the older children) have been asking why the family that used to be so present is ignoring us. I know an apology will likely never occur, so I am struggling how to forgive my family. How do I forgive when offenses have been so deeply felt? -Anonymous Mother Praying for the Souls in Purgatory (21:14) Hi Father Josh! I'm trying to figure out the right way to pray for souls in purgatory. Since I can't know (unless one of them is beatified) whether my family members who have died are in heaven, I don't know who exactly to pray for. But it feels exclusive just to pray "for my family in purgatory." It feels like if I'm being that general, I should just pray "for all souls in purgatory." But if I don't call them out by name, does it count or count less? Thanks for your help, Father, and all the good work you do! -Tamar Tired of Praying (28:20) Hello Father Josh, I listen to your podcast a lot, and I really like it. Thank you for the work you do. I am a junior in college, just striving to live out the Catholic faith. Earlier this year (January) I listened to a ton of talks on Mary, the power of the Rosary and all of that. I was strongly convicted to pray the Rosary more often. I made a decision to pray the Rosary everyday. I had made decisions like this in the past with reading my Bible, and other forms of prayers but after a month, that all disappeared into thin air. However, with the Rosary I have been pretty much consistent in praying it. So here’s the issue. Father Josh, honestly, on some days I am just exhausted, and really just don’t feel like praying the Rosary or any prayer in general. Although I still pray it, I often rush through it, or my mind wanders off occasionally, or I doze off in between. Frankly, sometimes I just pray it to keep my streak. I tell myself I have come too far to give up now. I don’t want to waste my time (or Jesus’s or Mary’s time). I feel like if it has become a game to me, or just really mechanical then I should stop. Still, I like to believe I receive some graces when I strive through it, even when I don’t feel like it or when I’m just doing it to fulfill all righteousness. I’m scared that if I stop now, I’m never going to have the courage to take up any other challenge to strengthen my prayer life. I may just give up this whole prayer thing in general, because Father, I’m legit tired, confused and need some advice. Thank you. -Legit Tired Resources Want to browse the previous resources Fr. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
One of my favorite ways to understand Scripture is to consider the opposite. Whatever it IS becomes clearer for me when I think about what it's NOT. Michael Ketterer does that for us in the song, "Spirit Lead Me," when he reminds us that chasing feelings is the opposite of being led by the Spirit. I want to be led by the Spirit, but I've learned in my studies that first I must "inquire of the Lord." On this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Read in context Read and keep on reading Listen to an audio version of Scripture Read/study to epic music playlist Putting on a garment of praise as we studied last week in Episode 282 Not letting the music you listen to inform what you believe, rather letting what you believe inform the music you'll consume Rapid Bible Read Through - you can learn more about it over on my friend Keith Ferrin's blog How Saul did NOT inquire of the Lord and what happened - 1 Chronicles 10:13 Taking on 1st and 2nd Samuel by reading for larger chunks of time David inquiring of the Lord - 1 Samuel 23:1-5, 1 Samuel 23:10-13, 1 Samuel 30:8, 2 Samuel 2:1-4, 2 Samuel 5:17-25 and more How and why WE are led by the Spirit - Romans 8:5-14 Additional Resources Lyrics and chords - Influence Music The story behind "Spirit Lead Me" by Michael Ketterer - YouTube Video "Spirit Lead Me" Devo with Michael Ketterer - YouTube Video This Week's Challenge Tackle the narrative told in 1st and 2nd Samuel this week. Take note of when people "inquire of the Lord" and when they do not. What are the results and consequences? Make it a prayer of yours to be led by the Spirit and not by your flesh. And if you are hostile to the things of God, by all means surrender. He will fill you with Himself and you will be free.
As we near the end of our week looking at how God is after our hearts, today we're going to look at how the Holy Spirit connects with the heart, and take time to today to invite the Holy Spirit to do a meaningful work in and through us. In today's podcast, we continue our weeklong focus on forgiveness by looking at the idea of separating out our forgiveness of the person from their actions. It's often our failure to do this separation that keeps us from engaging in the lifegiving command to forgive. But God has wisdom and revelation for us today as we look at his word, and freedom for our hearts today if we'll engage with him in prayer. Standing up through life’s adversities says a lot about a person; more so when amidst all of these, you still continue to offer a helping hand to others. Michael Ketterer is a man who not only possesses a great voice that deserves a golden buzzer on America’s Got Talent; he also has a great heart and a strong moral compass that inspires many. He shares to us the value and gift of family as he recounts how, together with his wife, they have come to expand their family by adopting 5 children. As a father of six, he opens up and talks to us about the struggles with going through the process and the emotional weight that comes with it. Living a Christian-centered life, Michael talks about how his faith has formed his love for music and helped him overcome difficulties.
As we end our week on Jesus' High Priestly prayer, today we'll dive into his desire for us to know the Father's great love. Knowing the love of God for us is essential to healthy Christian living. God's love is fundamental to our identity as his children and the sacrifice of Jesus. If we aren't rooted and grounded in the unconditional love of God, we will be like untethered buoys being tossed about in the sea. It may seem elementary that God loves you, but I'd encourage you to open your heart afresh to this reality, that God could reveal his love to you in a real and new way today. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 John 4:16, and today's worship is Met By Love by United Pursuit featuring Brandon Hampton and Michael Ketterer. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. If you would like to learn more about the First15 app, books, blogs, videos and our other resources, please visit first15.org. In our last episode before we break for summer, we talk about the highlights of the season and revisit some of the themes that we loved. We had a lot of joking and laughter as we shared some of our personal experiences and we also checked in about our word for the year. In Episode 16 I get a chance to speak with a talented musician and America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer recipient, Michael Ketterer. I saw Michael’s performance on AGT and was extremely inspired by his story as well as his great voice. I reached out to him and he graciously accepted the invite. Michael is a Pediatric Mental Health Nurse by trade and has been involved in music since his father exposed him to it when he was very young.Michael and I speak about his childhood and how his father got him into music, his family as a great support system, getting a chance to be interviewed by Mario Lopez and of course we get some of his insight surrounding his life changing performance on America’s Got Talent. Here is the link to that performance if you haven’t seen it – Michael Ketterer on America’s Got TalentHumbled to have the chance to speak with this guy given that he has been on every major show over the past couple of weeks.I hope you all enjoy our conversationMichael can be found online:Instagram – @KettererMusicTwitter – @KettererMusicFacebook – Ketterer MusicYou can listen to some of Michael’s music here – https://rma.lnk.to/touchingheavenAbout the Host:It’s hard to write these things about yourself but I’m just a very curious guy that wants to learn as much as I can about the world and the people in it. With a new found motivation many years ago to achieve certain goals and push beyond status quo, I wanted to speak with people that were breaking out of their comfort zones and try to capture how they were doing it and what insight could be shared to help others. I hope you all will continue along on the journey with me and share any feedback you have.If you enjoyed this episode or others please consider leaving a review on iTunes or whichever Podcast platform you listen on.Here’s where you can find me:Website: https://www.brianondrako.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brianondrako/Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianondrakoFacebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/justgetstartedpodcast/ Thank you very much!Brian See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
