Mississippi Appendectomy refers to the involuntary and forced sterilization of Black Women in the southern United States from the 1920's through the 1980's.  This procedure was bolstered by the practice of Eugenics whereby scientists and political leaders enacted state control through sterilization laws to govern the population growth of Black people not unlike that which occurred on the slave plantations.  The notion that reproduction was restricted to candidates deemed fit and black women were only 12% of the population yet 64% of those sterilized demonstrates the states' antipathy of Black proliferation.The celebrated feminist and women's rights activist Margaret Sanger was a prominent eugenicist and proponent of arresting the growth of the Black population.  As an advocate of birth control, especially for Black women, her intentions towards Blacks have been described as genocidal.In 1964, during her testimony at the Democratic National Convention, Fannie Lou Hamer detailed her experience of being forcibly sterilized while in the hospital to have a non-cancerous tumor removed.  Her remarks were so striking that President Lyndon B. Born in the German Empire, she immigrated to England in 1886 when she was fifteen. She sang in music halls throughout the United Kingdom in the late 19th century, and became known in the entertainment industry for bringing attention to the sexism and sexual assaults that were common in the business. Marion was a prominent member of the British suffrage movement, which campaigned for the right of women to vote. She began her advocacy by selling copies of the Votes for Women newspaper, then progressed to militant protests, vandalism, and riots. She was one of several suffragettes who conducted bombing and arson attacks throughout Britain. Marion was convicted and jailed several times for arson and bombing, and was subject to over two hundred force-feedings while on hunger strike in prison. On the outbreak of World War I, Marion had to leave Britain because of her German origin, so she moved to the United States. She joined the birth control movement, and spent 13 years campaigning on street corners, selling Margaret Sanger's monthly magazine Birth Control Review. She relied on her personality and loud voice to engage passers-by, and became a well-known figure in New York City. Marion was arrested several times for distributing birth control information in violation of anti-obscenity laws. Stephanie Gorton is a writer, editor, and journalist whose work has been published in a range of outlets including The New Yorker, Smithsonian, and Paris Review Daily. In the early 1900s, birth control was considered obscene, and  distorting it or receiving it through the mail was a criminal offense. So the United States was forced to take a package of birth control devices to court to stop them. But their plans did not turn out as planned.

Margaret Sanger's legacy is complex and controversial. While she is widely credited for pioneering birth control and advocating for women's reproductive rights, her involvement with the eugenics movement has raised serious concerns. Sanger promoted the idea of limiting reproduction among certain populations, including the poor, disabled, and marginalized groups. Some critics argue that her work disproportionately targeted Black communities, pointing to her support for the “Negro Project,” a birth control initiative that, while intended to provide healthcare access, has been interpreted by some as an attempt to reduce Black birth rates

The Nazis weren't the only regime that tried to normalize the process of sterilizing the “undesirables” in order to benefit society. In fact, the Third Reich borrowed the concept from, and was able to normalize it inside Germany, because of the laws that had been instituted in America decades earlier.
