The Department of Justice just approved the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery deal, and it is the biggest media story of the week. In this quick hit episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, Frank breaks down what the $111 billion sign-off actually means, which regulators are still standing in the way, and why he believes this merger is bad news for fans, creators, and the entertainment industry as a whole. This is the largest federal hurdle the deal had to clear, and now that Washington has stepped aside, the conversation shifts to the state attorneys general and overseas regulators who could still slow it down. Frank also lays out exactly which franchises and brands would end up under the same corporate umbrella, from DC and Harry Potter to Star Trek and Top Gun, and makes the case for why all of that consolidation should worry you.0:00 DOJ Approves the $111 Billion Paramount and Warner Bros Deal0:16 The Studios and Franchises Being Combined0:25 Why Frank Thinks This Deal Should Be Stopped0:33 What Comes Next and Final ThoughtsThe DOJ has approved the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery deal valued at $111 billion, clearing the biggest federal antitrust hurdle the merger faced. The fight is not over. The California AG, New York, and nearly a dozen other states are still reviewing the deal, along with regulators in the UK and EU.Australia cleared the deal on June 9 and Germany cleared it earlier this year, so international approvals are starting to stack up.The combined company would unite DC, Harry Potter, Looney Tunes, and CNN with Paramount franchises like Star Trek, Top Gun, and Mission: Impossible.Frank's take is that this consolidation hampers creativity and leads to job losses, making it a win for the Ellisons and wealthy investors but a bad deal for everyone else."The DOJ just approved the Paramount and Warner Brothers deal for $111 billion. This clears the federal antitrust hurdle.""In my opinion, this deal has to be stopped. It will hamper creativity. It will be job losses.""This is a big win for them. There's no Ezra this week, beloved listeners, so Helena and Matty decided to use this time to catch up on what we've seen in a very long overdue What We Sneep episode! Matty goes first (as they have less to cover, per usual), which includes covering their month of renting multiple dvds before watching two movies back to back that were so bad they just stopped watching movies full stop. They also played a lot of Skyrim, which they do not recommend. Helena goes next, covering a much wider group of films across a variety of genres, most of which were actually good and didn't make her stop watching movies. This does include several Looney Tunes shorts, which she DOES recommend! The episode takes a turn at the end to complain about fandom, capitalism, and how media companies really just want your money and won't really give you what you want in the end because they just see you as money making machines. Yippee! Our duo also watched Anaconda (1997) together. No they have not seen the remake. Yes they do spend a lot of time this episode talking about Anaconda. Brace yourselves.
Part 5 of our Looney Tunes deep dive. We watched: I Haven't Got a Hat (1935) The Case of the Stuttering Pig (1937) Porky in Wackyland (1938) You Ought to Be in Pictures (1940) Robin Hood Daffy (1958)
Episode Summary Nicolas Cage finally gets to be Nicolas Cage, and Frank has thoughts. This week the guys are back in studio to break down the new Spider-Noir series, the ElevenLabs deal recreating Stan Lee's voice that has fans up in arms, and the freshly revealed Minecraft Movie Squared logo and Matt Berry casting. Along the way they realize the Herobrine creepypasta they believed for years was apparently made up the whole time. The back half turns into a full 2026 mid-year check-in, ranking the year's biggest surprises like Wonder Man and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms while looking ahead to Clayface, Spider-Man Brand New Day, and House of the Dragon. Then comic writer Bill Stoddard joins to talk Murder Mouse, the gleefully unhinged book Frank describes as Chuck E. Cheese meets Disneyland meets an 80s slasher flick. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro, In-Studio Catch-Up, and Patreon Thanks 02:32 Minecraft Movie Squared and the Herobrine Myth 08:10 Stan Lee's AI Voice and the ElevenLabs Backlash 16:42 Spider-Noir Review 25:22 2026 Mid-Year Check-In: Movies and Shows 34:15 What's Coming Up Next: Clayface, BioShock Dreams, and More 50:32 Guest Interview: Bill Stoddard on Murder Mouse 1:02:55 Weekly Picks and Comics for the DC Blackout Key Takeaways The Minecraft Movie Squared logo sparks end-game theories, Matt Berry joins the cast, and the crew comes to terms with the Herobrine creepypasta being fabricated rather than real lore. ElevenLabs and the company holding Stan Lee's likeness launch an AI voice to read public library books, drawing heavy backlash, especially given Lee sued over his likeness rights back in 2018. Spider-Noir lands a low 8 from Frank and a 10 out of 10 from Squeaks, with the color and black-and-white toggle and the Ben Reilly name nod as standout details, though the detective pacing runs slow for modern viewers. The mid-year review crowns Wonder Man, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The Boys finale as highlights, with Clayface, Spider-Man Brand New Day, House of the Dragon, and Lanterns leading the watchlist. A running rant on movie theater popcorn buckets covers the Lobo motorcycle, the 80 dollar Galactus, and the Masters of the Universe sword and castle, plus why studios keep missing the collectibles opportunity. Bill Stoddard breaks down the origin of Murder Mouse, the fourth-wall humor inspired by Looney Tunes, the new Head Case Comics label, and a planned From Dusk Till Dawn style one-shot. Quotes "It's legal, but not right." "It takes the value out of the voice, the words they spoke when they were alive." "Basically, Chuck E. Cheese meets Disneyland meets an 80s slasher flick." "What if the classic Mickey Mouse saw how the world was today?" "Wonder Man just came out of nowhere." This week on Oooh They Funny, the crew takes a hilarious trip back to their childhood to discuss whether Looney Tunes was way more unhinged than we realized. From Pepe Le Pew's questionable behavior to Bugs Bunny's low-key bullying and Yosemite Sam's anger issues, they break down which characters would survive today's culture and which ones would be canceled immediately. Then the conversation turns to school as the hosts share stories about the best and worst teachers they ever had. They discuss the educators who changed lives, the ones who clearly hated their jobs, favoritism in the classroom, and whether those tough teachers everyone hated actually prepared us the most for adulthood. To wrap things up, the crew imagines what warning labels people should come with before you become friends with them, date them, marry them, or hire them. From people who never answer their phones to sports fanatics, gym addicts, and chronic procrastinators, everybody catches a stray in this one. It's a funny, nostalgic episode full of laughs, stories, and a little self-reflection along the way.
The Looney Tunes animated anthology series premiered in 1930, and in its nearly 100 years has become a pop-culture juggernaut, conquering movie theaters, television, video games, theme parks, and more. The franchise launched entertainment icons like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and others that have entertained generations, won a slew of accolades including five Academy Awards, and has generated an estimated $17 billion. While entertainment industry mergers and misfortunes have bruised the property's prestige in recent years, the characters retain incredible cultural cache, and the classic shorts remain outrageously entertaining. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as we attempt to name the best Looney Tunes character.Characters discussed: Bugs Bunny, Granny, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Pepe LePew Penelope Pussycat, Elmer Fudd, Marvin the Martian, Daffy Duck, Michigan J. In an episode recorded in person, in the same room [for the first time ever], Marc and Jordan talk about 2024's The Day the Earth Blew Up, a movie whose development and production were on display as the podcast progressed in the early 2020s, and whose release, and near lack thereof, was a heated topic as we gained more of an online presence. The film itself carries so much of the Looney energy the fans had been begging for for years, and we talk about how this film achieves that, what we love about it, and why it's important. Send us Fan MailWhat happens when you take cartoon chaos and drop it into a gritty detective story that actually works? Who Framed Roger Rabbit might be one of the boldest movie swings of the last 40 years, blending slapstick cartoon madness with a noir mystery in a way that still feels surprisingly smart. We head to Maroon Studios and Cloverleaf Studios to break down why this 1988 classic still feels like a technical achievement, even in a world packed with CGI.We talk about what makes the illusion so convincing, from the practical effects and real-world interactions to the tiny details like shadows, dust trails, and the way the camera treats animated characters like actual actors on a physical set. We also dive into the performances, especially Eddie Valiant's dry frustration playing perfectly against Roger's nonstop chaos. On top of that, we explore how Robert Zemeckis's direction and Alan Silvestri's score give the movie that classic old Hollywood feel while keeping the energy moving.Beyond the filmmaking, we get into the movie's cultural impact. Seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny share the screen feels like a once in a lifetime moment, and we talk about why something like that feels almost impossible today. We also explore the darker side of the film, from Judge Doom and the nightmare fuel of the dip to Eddie's alcoholism and the freeway conspiracy that feels way more relevant than you might expect. By the end, we're asking a bigger question: if you didn't grow up on Looney Tunes or classic Disney cartoons, does Who Framed Roger Rabbit still land the same in the streaming era?If you enjoyed the episode, subscribe, share it with a movie-loving friend, and leave us a five star review to help more people discover the show.Apologies, there is a static sound during some of Anthony's parts.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
More like HOOP, there it is! On the precipe of his elimination from the 2026 NBA playoffs, at the hands of the similarly odious Oklahoma City Thunder, our latest unlock from the Patreon vault: it's Space Jam: A New Legacy, the confused semi-hagiography of LeBron James. Primarily addressing his struggles to be a good father (not to the real LeSperms, Bronny or Bryce, but a false, Hollywood-invented LeSperm named Dom), it's impossible to overstate how little this movie cares about the Looney Tunes. If you like the Tunes, this movie isn't for you!

Oddball's Odyssey from Bad Idea Comics might look like a Sunday funnies throwback, but underneath the whimsical cartooning and laugh-out-loud moments is a story with real emotional depth. Written and illustrated by Tony Millionaire, with colors by Jim Campbell II, this oversized issue delivers gorgeous, expressive artwork that leans into classic cartooning and Looney Tunes–style visual storytelling. On the surface, it's a zany adventure following Bobby, an alcoholic monkey, and his friend Jimmy as they navigate a bizarre journey filled with mythological elements, surreal humor, and incredible sight gags. But beneath that playful tone are themes of self-awareness, belonging, friendship, and the search for love, as Bobby's obsession with Lucia the swan pushes him toward confronting his own flaws and finding his place in the world. This is a comic that works on multiple levels—you can enjoy it purely for the humor and visual storytelling, or dig deeper into the ideas about identity, connection, and acceptance that give the story its emotional weight.

If we told you that this week's episode of the Empire Podcast featured not one but two people banging on about Taylor Swift, odds are you'd reckon one of them was James Dyer. And you'd be wrong. For those people are Ben Travis and David Lowery, director of the new poptastic psychodrama, Mother Mary. Lowery is this week's guest, and he popped into the podbooth to sit down with Ben to talk all about how Taylor Swift influenced part of his approach to the Anne Hathaway-Michael Coel flick, and much, much more, including an ultra-geeky exchange about Star Wars action figures. [36:32 - 58:21 approx] Either side of that, Helen O'Hara welcomes James Dyer and Amon Warmann into the podbooth as they discuss great movie prison breaks and what makes for a good biopic; the week's movie news (at least, the stuff that broke before the pod was recorded... thanks a bunch, Miami Vice '85 casting news and Clayface trailer!); and review Mother Mary, Charlize Theron-Taron Egerton thriller Apex, and Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. Enjoy.
