On today's episode, Cliff continues discussing the topic of transition. We all know it well — in a year like we’re having, experiencing change is what we can count on most. Every few years, the competition changes, the customers change, the technology changes, so it’s vital that the company and CEO change as well. If we know change is coming for us, why not strategically prepare for it? I had the privilege of speaking with the amazing Robert Rosenberg, who just happens to know a thing or two about strategic transition. Not only has Bob served as CEO of Dunkin’ Brands for more than 3 decades, but he’s also authored, “Around the World: A Dozen Lessons I Learned Running Dunkin' Donuts.” Together, we get into the nitty gritty of what it looks like to navigate transition well, at the executive level. This talk is full of transferable principles for all kinds of changes you or your business could be experiencing. We had Mike and Susan from White Castle on a couple of months again and they are both rock stars in the industry. Speaking or Rockstars, let’s get into today’s episode. Karen Bird, CIO for Hooters of AmericaKaren Bird, Chief Information Officer for Hooters of America is accountable for the strategy and execution of technology systems and services for multiple Brands and all functional areas within the company. She has responsibilities for both corporate and franchised departments within the overall organization. Karen joined the Hooters of America executive team in July 2017. What did Stephanie learn about herself the first year in as a CHRO?   Anything she had to relearn since she had the great career at one company for so long?  Deep thoughts here - it's lonely being a CHRO, and Stephanie didn't fully realize that until she was in the seat. 24:38 - KD asks Stephanie to comment on the key to making sure a company like DD gets its fair share of talent in the recruiting world? Lots of discussion about  employment brand here - how does it contribute to the recruiting success, the "activation of employment brand" at Dunkin', both internally and externally by the tagline "Fueled by You." 30:55 - KD and Stephanie talk about COVID, company culture and the workplace. What are some things that are on her mind mind related to how her HR function and the company itself will morph as we (hopefully) get to the post-COVID period?  We discuss the saying, "Life is a Bell Curve", at length here! 39:07 - Close:  Who is Stephanie Lilak's BEST HIRE EVER and why?  There's been twelve of them (!!), and she has a list that defines what it takes to reach that designation. Happy Monday everyone. Hope everyone was safe and ready for November. Today's topics include Dunkin Brands Group being acquired by Inspire Brands. We are also looking into the Pokemon Card Market as it is very interesting to hear about this wave of alternative investments. Europe is also locking down again and there may be some consequences associated. Continue to be safe and we will see you Wednesday for a special episode. Diving into in, Dunkin Brands Group being potentially acquired in an 11.3B cash buyout by Inspire Brands, which is owned by the Rowark Capital. Dunkin or Dunkin Donuts (changed due to a focus on coffee), also owns Baskin Robins restaurants international and abroad. Dunkin Brands runs on a 100% franchise business model where their sources of revenue come from royalties, franchise payments, licensing, certain product sales, and advertising fees. Dunkin has had a great year as stock when compared to other QSR (Quick Service Restaurants) in the space like Mcdonalds, Chipotle, and dominos (even compared to Starbucks, Dunkin has done great). Over the previous thinking, we would assume that restaurants would get hit hard. Inspire Brands currently owns brands like (Arby's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Rusty Taco, Jimmy Johns, and Sonic Drive-in. Inspire Brands was on a purchasing spree and has developed a lean portfolio of the franchise and multi-location restaurants that is diverse (Arbys - Fast Food, BWW - Sports Bar, Jimmy John's - Sandwiches, Rusty Taco - Mexican, Sonic: Drive-In) when adding Dunkin and Baskin they are very diverse. It will be interesting to see what Inspire Brands does with this acquisition and to see if they make more acquisitions in the future. We also look into the pokemon card space. There are some things to be learned from this even if pokemon cards are not a credible investment by some standards. Trading Cards, Collectables, Clothing, Sneakers are all products that have seen a huge growth in recent years, especially pokemon cards most recently. Pokemon is the largest grossing media franchise. We talk about the pitfalls of investing in this type of asset class and the issues with the overall market. We also look into the EU and their lockdowns. Although GDP in Europe has grown, so have the cases in the country. This action shows the intensity of what is going on not only there but what has been occurring in the world. Government aid should be arriving but we are curious to see how the United States moves. The elections are coming up and it will be interesting to see what happens. Stay safe out there!

Previously Christine led the sustainability team and the Corporate Foundation for eight years at Dunkin Brands Inc. Prior to Dunkin’ Brands, Christine developed integrated campaigns and strategies for communicating environmental sustainability at Cone Communications. She previously managed the CSR Initiative at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University. Christine has a graduate certificate in Leadership for Change from Boston College and a BS in Sociology from Brigham Young University. She currently resides in Boston and spends her free time training for half marathons and pursuing her love of interior design. Christine joins Sustainable Nation to discuss: Process of developing a new sustainability strategy  Communicating sustainability through the product Product take back programs and circularity  Approach to addressing climate risks and opportunities Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Christine's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? The one piece of advice that I would say that I've found to be so helpful is rely heavily on internal stakeholder engagement. I've always in my career been either a sole practitioner as I am here at Tumi and Samsonite, or you know, I've had a very small team and you really need to get your colleagues engaged in the work. So, anything that you can do to include your colleagues as part of the development of the strategy, you know, understanding what your issues are, developing the goals and right now we're in the process of determining how we're going to collect and report data to demonstrate progress against those goals. Now, I have to send out a significant amount of you know, surveys with lots of questions and ask them to spend time to provide me with a lot of information. And so I'm following that same process that I used for the materiality assessment and for the strategy development and the goal setting to also do to the data collection. And they all have been part of that process from the beginning, they're already bought into the goals that we're setting and they feel really committed and invested in ensuring that we can report against those goals in a meaningful way, and that they're getting credit for the great work that they're doing. So involving your colleagues in any way that you can, at every step of the process is going to enable you to be so much more successful. I am not an advocate of setting a strategy and then handing it off to people and saying, go do this when they've not had any hand in helping you develop a process, that's actually gonna work for them because if it doesn't work for your colleagues, it's never gonna work for you. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am most excited about the growth in circularity and zero waste. So, you know, we are a consumer goods company. Consumers are always going to buy products. We hope that they always support and buy Tumi products, but at the same time, you know, we want to make sure that we're increasing the circularity of those products, whether we're partnering with other organizations to utilize materials and waste that they have access to that they can't use, whether we're looking at how to minimize the waste within our own manufacturing facilities, working with suppliers to minimize that waste. And then thinking about how do we use materials like the recycled PET so that we are helping to eliminate waste within the existing waste stream and repurposing it. I think that's one of the most exciting conversations that we're having here at Tumi is thinking about how do we design for circularity. How do we use recycled materials and recyclable materials in our products? I love it. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? So the book that I would recommend is not a sustainability book per se, but it is one of my favorite books and I think inspired me to get into the work that I do. And that is the, it's a classic Walden by Henry David Thoreau and in full transparency I did work with the Walden Woods Project and I have lived in the Boston area, very close to Walden, and it is one of my very favorite places in the world. And I think that, you know, it has a lot of valuable messages that really resonate with the work that sustainability professionals do, but it often reminds me everyone should have their Walden. Everyone should have the place that they go, where they can reconnect with what's most important to who they are and what they do. We're quickly losing those places. We're quickly losing the beautiful places of this world. And I think, you know, it's the work that we do, to me, the work that we're really committed to is how do we protect and preserve those places for travelers of today and tomorrow so they can go find their own Walden. Then they can go to a beautiful beach in Bali and it's not covered with plastic bottles, but rather they're carrying a bag that helped divert those plastic bottles from that scene. And so, you know, it really does inspire me to continue to do the work that I do so that everyone can have their own beautiful place like Walden. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? So I referenced it earlier and I am a big proponent of the materiality assessment. And it's perhaps because, you know, in the work that I've done, I've often come into organizations as the first director of sustainability and I think it's a great tool. One to ensure that we're not talking to ourselves about the issues that are important to us, you know, it enables you to really identify what's most important to your business what's really going to have the most impact. It helps me learn about the organization and the industry as well. If I'm new to that organization and industry, it gives me an excuse to talk to my colleagues and to educate them about sustainability and say, hey, this is the first step you're going to be part of this journey that we're on to develop our sustainability strategy. I'm here to ask you to tell me what you think is most important to our business. And so it also, as you evaluate and revisit the materiality over time, it enables you to really determine what's most important to your business so that you can use your resources wisely. I mean, all of us especially right now, but in particular in sustainability are often resource constrained, whether that's budget or time. And there can be so much noise in the sustainability space that it allows you to really say, these are the issues that we're going to focus on. We're going to focus on, you know, product innovation, we're going to focus on driving supply chain, we're going to focus on carbon action, we're going to focus on people and yeah, there's a lot of other important stuff out there, but this is what we're going to focus on right now. So, I really love the materiality assessment. And finally, Christine, where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Samsonite and Tumi? Sure. So you can learn more about all the great work that Tumi is doing in this space and you know, the merge Alpha Bravo and devote collections that we're launching. The Tumi difference page of the Tumi website and then you can read our annual sustainability report, which thank you for doing that. You've referenced it a couple of times, and that's on the investor relations page of the Samsonite website. I am on LinkedIn. You can find me there. It's my full name Christine Riley Miller. Christine Miller is fairly common. So you might find a bunch of them, but Christine Riley Miller. The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan
140 CEOs on What it Will Take To Be a Leader in 2030

The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2020 74:46

My new book, The Future Leader, comes out on February 26th and it is based on interviews I had with over 140 CEOs around the world. In the book the two questions that I wanted to answer were: Is the leader of 2030 going to look that different than today? And if so, how is that leader actually going to look different?    To find out the answers to my questions, I interviewed CEOs around the world from organizations like Mastercard, Unilever, Audi, Best Buy, Oracle, Kaiser, SAP, Koc Holding, Enel, Carnival Cruise Lines, Dominos, Dunkin’ Brands, National Grid and many others. I also teamed up with LinkedIn and we surveyed 14,000 employees around the world. And this gave me a very good picture around what the future leader is gonna look like.   And what I found out from these interviews was that most of the top CEOs around the world believe that while there are going to be some attributes that remain the same for leaders of the future-- things like being able to create a vision and execute on strategy-- they also believe that business leaders are going to need to arm themselves with a new set of skills and mindsets in order to stay relevant.    Why do they need a new set of skills and mindsets? It's because our organizations are going to look fundamentally different over the next 10 years than they do now because of technology and artificial intelligence, because of things like purpose and meaning that employees care about, globalization, the changing nature of talent, etc... And because our organizations are going to look different, it makes sense that we are going to need a new type of leader to guide and lead these organizations over the next 10 years and beyond.    So what I created after interviewing all these CEOs is something that I call The Notable Nine, a collection of four mindsets and five skills that leaders of the future will need to succeed.  The four mindsets are:   The Explorer: This includes practicing curiosity, being a perpetual or lifelong learner, having agility and nimbleness in your way of thinking, having a growth mindset, and being open-minded. The Chef: As a future leader, in 2030 and beyond, you are going to have to balance ingredients, and there are two ingredients that you as a future leader are going to have to balance. The first ingredient is technology and the second ingredient is being purpose-driven and caring.  The Global Citizen: As a leader you must think globally and embrace diversity The Servant: Leaders need to know how to serve their team, serve their customers, serve their leaders, and serve themselves. There is more to being a servant leader than we usually talk about   The five skills are:   The Futurist: Making sure that you can think in terms of possibilities and scenarios.  Yoda: This one is all about emotional intelligence--specifically empathy and self-awareness The Translator: Listening and communicating with all of the channels that you have access to--email, video chats, text messaging, Slack, Facebook at Work, etc…. The Coach: You need to believe that your job as a leader is to help make other people more successful than you are The Technology Teenager: Leaders must be tech savvy and digitally fluent just as today’s teenagers are   These are the four mindsets and five skills I want you to teach your team, to everybody in your organization. That's it. Four mindsets, five skills. If you can do this and teach others these things, I'm very confident that you will become a future ready leader and you will be successful. And by the way, success doesn't just mean making money. It means having a positive impact on society, on the world, on communities in which you serve.   To order the book or learn more about it, go to getfutureleaderbook.com.  What you will learn: What it will take to be a successful leader in 2030 and beyond A look at the global leadership gap (leaders around the world think they are doing much better than they really are!) A look at the insights found from Jacob’s interviews with over 140 CEOs around the world The trends shaping the future of leadership The greatest challenges future leaders will have to face

His book, The Challenge Culture: Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback, showcases how a culture built on open dialogue and honesty will deliver collective positive outcomes for customers and team members. This same matter-of-fact culture is especially necessary for franchisor/franchisee relationships.    Nigel says, “I truly believe that the people who believe that franchisors and franchisees will always be on the same page economically are living a falsehood… you need to clearly separate the two economic models, don't just ignore the separation, find a way to bridge it.”     In today's hyper-competitive world, people crave honest feedback, regardless of the type of organization. In 2017, Nigel became the owner of Leyton Orient Football, a troubled professional soccer team that presents a unique opportunity to implement his “challenge culture” strategy.    Tune in to this week's value-packed episode to hear more about Nigel's fascinating story and find out how honest communication and pushback can drive your business onward and upward!  What we talk about: Nigel's back story and his career in franchising How Nigel's background in HR helped in franchising Franchise economics and franchisee relationships The purest franchise model “People should be treated fairly, you should be very transparent with them if they're not performing or they're running bad stores or bad tax operations or bad cleaning services, whatever the franchise is, you've got to be straightforward and honest with them.” - Nigel Travis The trajectory of the business from locations perspective The similarities between fans and franchisees Keeping the franchisees engaged especially within a big system The importance of two-way communication Ways where it has gotten harder for the franchise (The franchise, the franchisees, and the economy “We pride that we go back to the basics of what is good for franchise economics, and what is good for the relationship and how could we work together to overcome some of the hurdles that franchisees have in operating their business.” - Nigel Travis Recruiting good franchisees Focusing on great training Don't franchise too early Having a philosophy on how you are going to approach franchisees and system leaders What [Dunkin'] a franchisor is looking for a franchisee Those that will not fit as a franchisee Valuing the lessons learned from past difficult experiences Staying cautious and being prepared as much as possible Giving regular feedback and support   What we mention: Dunkin' Brands Papa John's International Burger King Leyton Orient Football Team Baskin' Robbins The Challenge Culture, by Nigel Travis Leyton Orient Football

SHOW NOTES Teacher. Mentor. Strategist. Innovator. Author. All are terms you could use to identify Adam Pierno. The highly caffeinated Pierno has refined a simple methodology to build precise strategies for numerous client campaigns. Prior to his current role as AVP of Marketing Strategy at Arizona State University's Enterprise Marketing Hub, Pierno leveraged his knowledge of consumer behavior to produce informed and effective campaigns for such national brands as Delta Air Lines, Dial Corporation, Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin' Brands and Mercedes-Benz. His first book, “Under Think It” delves into the foundational aspects of marketing strategy. He was inspired to pen this insightful guidebook to fill a void in strategy training curriculum. That book is used to teach strategy at universities, global agencies and Fortune 100 companies. His second book, "Specific" demonstrates a model that today's brands can use to grow in an absence of viable mass media. SHOW DETAILS Running time: 48:49 Subscribe on iTunes and leave us a review! Nigel Travis is Executive Chairman of Dunkin' Brands. His new book is The Challenge Culture: Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback. Nigel served as CEO of Dunkin' Brands from 2009 through July 2018. His distinctive human-centered perspective on leadership and management, now viewed as essential in today’s complex and diverse global organizations, took root early in his career when he was a human resources manager. Prior to Dunkin Brands, he served as President and COO at Blockbuster, and President and CEO at Papa John’s. In 2017, he became owner of Leyton Orient Football, a troubled professional soccer team that presents a unique opportunity to implement his challenge culture strategy. Stew and Nigel discuss how organizations and employees thrive in today’s hyper-competitive world when there’s a culture that supports questioning everything without disrespecting anyone. That means everyone -- from new recruit to senior executive -- must be given the freedom to speak up and question the status quo. And they talk about Nigel’s unique perspective on how communication and crises at work affect people in other parts of their lives. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Nigel Travis is the current Executive Chairman of the Board for Dunkin’ Brands. Previously, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Dunkin’ Brands and added responsibility as Chairman of the Board in May 2013. Dunkin’ Brands Group controls nearly 19,000 Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins “points of sale” in more than 60 countries, from Argentina to Japan. Previously, Nigel served as President & CEO of Papa John’s, the pizza chain with annual system-wide sales of $2.1 billion and more than 3,300 restaurants throughout the U.S. and 29 international markets. During his four-year tenure with the company, Papa John’s online sales tripled through the innovative use of technology. Prior to Papa John’s, Nigel served as the President and COO at Blockbuster, Inc. During that time, global sales increased over 50 percent and the international business was developed to encompass 26 countries with revenues of $1.8 billion. Nigel also built a worldwide franchise network of 300 franchisees in 15 countries with revenues of approximately $1 billion, and transitioned the company from a video rental store chain to a complete movie and game source. Nigel has also worked for Burger King, Exxon, Kraft Foods, Rolls Royce and Parker Hannifin. Nigel’s new book will be coming out on September 18th and it is titled, “The Challenge Culture: Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback” Why a pushback culture? Nigel says, “Pushback gives you more views, often different perspectives, builds greater engagement and probably alignment within the organization.” This culture gets the best from incorporating peoples’ thoughts. You get the best solutions. This is the way to get people to truly by-in to a project. Why is it hard to get pushback culture going? The approach is anti-hierarchical. People spend time to get to senior positions and once they get there they have a feeling of, ‘I am in charge’. They are often reluctant to give up power and control People are too lazy - it’s easier give orders than cultivate this pushback culture How do you create a challenge culture? Start modeling it yourself It is not something to plug in, it takes time and patience Go in and ask questions - in positive way Drop in to discuss the book, idea, etc. Don’t go too fast; do not be too overt about it (unless you are the CEO) Nigel’s advice for employees: Be civil and don’t attack Use open-ended questions - Can we do it better? - Ask - would you be interested in hearing what I am thinking? What you will learn in this episode: What is pushback and why is it important? Nigel’s experience at Kraft Foods, Rolls-Royce, Parker Hannifin, Papa John’s, Dunkin’ Brands and Blockbuster A look at Blockbuster’s demise and how they could have avoided it Nigel’s biggest triumph and misstep How company cultures in Europe differ from the United States Contact: Nigel Travis on LinkedIn

"Minimum-Wage Issue Exerts Maximum Impact On Restaurant Industry" was a recent headline on Forbes.com and is the concern of many restaurant industry professionals including those of franchise brands with tens, hundreds and thousands of locations nationwide. Rising wages will force price increases across the menu. Brands have already begun to push their prices up as their labor costs have risen, either from mandated or expected hikes to the minimum wage or from costs associated with health care coverage. In addition, several national brands have already begun to roll out self-order kiosks to reduce labor. This week on Franchise Today, co-hosts Stan Friedman and Paul Segreto welcome long-time franchise and restaurant industry professional, Lynette McKee. With over two decades experience at Dunkin Brands, Burger King, Dennys, Checkers and Metromedia Restaurant Group, Lynette shares her perspective from the inside out of a labor-intensive industry that has already seen rising costs and declining profits. With a wealth of experience and time committed to education and leadership programs, Lynette also shares her insight on creating opportunities for minorities and women in food service and franchising. This episode of Jay Today comes to you from the Social Fresh conference (http://socialfresh.com). Laurie Meacham of Jetblue spoke at the conference about her experiences leading social media for the popular airline. She told an interesting story about a tweet that referenced the old Oregon Trail game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oregon_Trail_(computer_game)). Instead of saying a generic "thank you," Jetblue came back with a fun and relevant reply that truly impressed their passenger (https://twitter.com/JetBlue/status/258938937698054145).  Changing the way we interact and respond to the people who are watching us gives us a chance to make a lifelong customer (or personal friend). Today's Sprout Social shout out goes to Jessica Gioglio (http://twitter.com/savvybostonian), who is the social media lead at Dunkin' Brands. She is a contributor to Convince & Convert with her weekly Social Image of the Week column (http://www.convinceandconvert.com/author/jessica-gioglio/) and co-author of The Power of Visual Storytelling (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/007182393X). Jay Today (http://www.convinceandconvert.com/jay-today) is a video podcast with 3-minute lessons and commentary on business, social media and digital marketing from New York Times best-selling author and venture capitalist Jay Baer. Join Jay daily for insights on trends, quick tips, observations and inspiration. The show is sponsored and produced by Candidio (http://candidio.com), a simple and affordable video production company, and Sprout Social (http://sproutsocial.com), a social media management and analytics company that Jay uses for much of his social media every day.
