They build community to promote successful reentry and lasting reintegration, and to reform unjust criminal justice system policies. They empower directly impacted people to use their experiences to affect change in the carceral system. Serena joins us to talk about her own experience in the carceral system, her most profound food memories from prison, and the incredibly impactful work she has done for the community since her release. We were floored by this chat, and hope that Serena's experience and insight can help shed some much-needed light on the failings and injustices in the carceral system in this country. We are deeply grateful to her for her time and wisdom. Please enjoy our talk with her. Today's episode from this early February springtime in Paris is all about restaurants and wines. Le CBD Café Cookbook I also have a big announcement: My first cookbook just published. It's called Le CBD Café Cookbook. In it you'll find over 50 recipes that all incorporate hemp-derived CBD oil. Note, in the US, the FDA has classified hemp-derived cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, as a food supplement since there are no known narcotic effects but there are a plethora of reported health benefits. Recipes in Le CBD Café Cookbook are for delicious meals and snacks like Strawberry Dark Chocolate Banana CBD Smoothie, Apple Sausage Dutch Baby, Buttered Wild Mushrooms on Toast, Fish and Shrimp Ceviche with Popcorn, Texas Pulled Pork with Cayenne BBQ Sauce, Classic Italian Meatballs, French Beef Bourguignon Slow Cooked, Steak with Creamy Garlic Parmesan Sauce and Sweet Potato Pie with Cinnamon Roll Crust. And not to forget our furry friends, the last chapter, chapter 12, is devoted to homemade treats for your cat and dog. The book is out now and available on Amazon. We're giving away 5 digital copies this month of the cookbook. To qualify, share the link to this show on your social media such as Twitter and Instagram, and in your review of the show on Soundcloud or iTunes, mention Le CBD Café Cookbook. So, all aboard now as I take you on another meandering stroll through culinary Paris. The first segment features a longtime colleague of mine named Heidi Ellison who, after we worked together at the International Herald Tribune in the early 90s (since rebranded the International New York Times) went on to found Paris Update. Her Best Restaurants List for 2019 published recently on her site and these are the restaurants she'll be telling us about in our first interview. Several of her picks coincide with mine which you can read about on 10BEST.com where I review restaurants, hotels and attractions for USA Today on their 10BEST travel media brand. Then we switch to the world of wine. And I do mean the world of wine because as a departure from our regular wine discussions here on Paris GOODfood+wine which focus mainly on French wines, we speak with Florent Barrère, a native Bordelais, whose business is importing and selling high-end wines from regions like Australia, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Chile here in France to a predominantly French consumer. We discuss this ambitious yet successful business he founded 10 years ago following the outstanding day of wine tasting he hosted at the Plaza Athénée here in Paris last week. Let's Do Lunch! dines at La Pulperia on the upper east of New York City. The restaurant is a unique and delectable mix of Brazillian and South American flavors with a Latin flair that will tingle your taste buds. Their signature dishes are the Pacu Fish Ribs, Moqueca Mixta and El Salmon Brulee which is the sumptuous one-of-a-kind creation of Executive Chef Carlos Barroz. You normally wouldn't consider sweet and fishy as a match but this salmon tartar topped with a fromage brulee gives this raw bar selection an exciting crunchy flavor. Host Robin Milling talks with the server Jimy who proudly talks about how each selection was prepared. The bar scene is lively with bartender Cesar shaking up the La Pulperia UES cocktail. It's a marguerita with a Mexican flair featuring homemade tajin salt and a floating chili pepper garnish which Jimy says “I don't recommend you biting it at all!” The Crudo Tasting is a perfect mix of Tuna Tiradito, Shrimp Ceviche and the El Salmon Brulee. Our starter was corn and pork empanadas served with homemade chimichurri sauce that you'll want to sop up with a spoon. For our main dish Cazuela De Pulpo was served; perfectly grilled octopus surrounded by Spanish chorizo on a bed of carrot puree topped with pickled red onion and mole poblano gives it a slight kick. To top off the meal was an unbelievable Mezcal infused Chocolate Mousse. Let's Do Lunch! is also joined by manager Roman Cervantes who tells Robin the origins of La Pulperia which began with an idea by owners Victor Medina and Carlos Barroz for a “rustic deli store where friends and family can meet up together.” The ultimate is the Drag Queen brunch on Saturdays where you are entertained by the fabulous in New York.
