Supporting Migrants Returning to Fragile Contexts: Lessons from Iraq and Somalia

As the focus on returning failed asylum seekers and other migrants to their countries of origin remains high, there is a commensurate need to consider reintegration support that assists returnees in rebuilding their lives. Reintegration programs help returnees establish the social, economic, and psychosocial foundations needed to regain stability and, in the process, can aid host communities while seeking to address the drivers of irregular migration. Putting this support into practice is, however, very challenging—particularly in fragile settings, where infrastructure and services are limited, livelihood opportunities are scarce, and communities often contend with insecurity. Beyond difficulties accessing housing and property, many returnees experience significant psychosocial needs, including trauma and social stigma. Organizations supporting returning migrants also navigate specific challenges, including difficulties operating in some areas and engaging with local and national authorities. On this Migration Policy Institute Europe webinar, speakers outline under what conditions return to these fragile settings happen, and representatives from organizations that support returning migrants in Iraq, Somalia, and other fragile environments explore the specific challenges those environments pose for designing and delivering reintegration support. They also discuss the role that reintegration programming can play in helping returnees rebuild their lives and strengthening social cohesion. www.migrationpolicy.org

Top of Form Subject: Review of key themes and concepts from interviews with Inspector Mo Perry and Sergeant Chris Borgstead on performance enhancement imagery and its application in policing and personal health.   Executive Summary: This briefing document summarizes key themes from interviews with Inspector Mo Perry and retired Sergeant Chris Borgstead of the Delta Police Department (DPD). The discussion centers around "Bend Don't Break," a series focusing on optimum performance. A significant portion of the conversation is dedicated to the power of performance enhancement imagery, also known as visualization or mental rehearsal. Mo Perry, a seasoned police trainer and advocate for wellness, details the historical context, theoretical underpinnings, and diverse applications of this technique. Chris Borgstead shares a deeply personal and compelling account of how performance imagery, specifically a personalized script developed by Mo, played a crucial role in his successful navigation of a life-threatening pancreatic surgery (Whipple procedure) and subsequent recovery. The interviews highlight the critical link between mental and physical well-being for high-level performance in demanding professions like policing and in overcoming significant health challenges. Key Themes and Ideas: 1. The Importance of Mental and Psychological Aspects in High-Level Performance: ·       Both sources emphasize that physical skill and training are only part of the equation for achieving peak performance. ·       Mo Perry highlights historical evidence from Eastern Bloc countries' dominance in international sports, attributing it partly to their significant emphasis on the mental and psychological aspects of training. ·       Key Fact: "when it comes to high level performance about 85% minimum. Some will say as high as 90% is the mental psychological aspect of um of what's going on inside your mind in the privacy of your own mind." (Mo Perry) ·       This mental component involves internal dialogue, self-talk, and managing stress and anxiety. 2. Performance Enhancement Imagery: Definition and Applications: ·       Performance imagery is defined as "creating or recreating an experience in the mind." (Mo Perry) ·       It targets and leverages the "power of the subconscious mind because it's the subconscious mind that driv drives high level performance." (Mo Perry) ·       While commonly used informally (e.g., rehearsing a speech), structured and intentional imagery is shown to be more effective, supported by research and science. ·       Mo Perry has applied performance imagery in various domains within policing and beyond: ·       Firearms training (for new recruits, inservice members, and overcoming fear) ·       Sport (baseball pitching) ·       Police recruit training (final tests, scenario-based exams) ·       Sergeants promotional panels (interviews) ·       Reintegration for members after extended leave or use of force incidents ·       Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test preparation ·       De-escalation training and effective listening ·       Pre-surgery and post-surgery applications (most impactful personally for Mo and highlighted through Chris's story) 3. The Mind-Body Connection: ·       A central tenet discussed is the powerful and often underestimated connection between the mind and body. ·       Mo Perry explains how the mind controls various physiological processes, including heart rate, hormone release, healing, and blood flow. ·       Key Quote: "your body can your mind sorry can actually control blood flow." (Mo Perry) ·       This connection is leveraged in imagery, particularly in the context of Chris's surgery, to influence physical outcomes. 4. Chris Borgstead's Journey and the Impact of Imagery on His Whipple Surgery: ·       Chris faced a significant health challenge: recurrent pancreatitis due to a structural abnormality in his pancreas, leading to a high risk of pancreatic cancer. ·       He was diagnosed with an IPMN (Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm), an unknown origin tumor, and deemed a candidate for a Whipple procedure. ·       The Whipple is a complex and invasive surgery involving the removal of significant portions of the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. It carries a low two-year survival rate for those with cancer, and even for preventive cases like Chris's, involves a challenging recovery. ·       Chris describes feeling like a "ticking time bomb" and experiencing fear when confronted with the reality of the surgery and being referred to an oncologist. ·       Mo Perry developed a personalized 30-minute imagery script for Chris with several key goals: ·       Lowering cognitive state and anxiety: Reducing worry and negative self-talk leading up to the surgery. ·       Improving sleep: Counteracting the negative effects of anxiety on sleep, which is crucial for physical recovery and immune function. ·       Preparing for the hospital experience: Mentally rehearsing the process, setting expectations for a successful outcome, and empowering Chris to communicate with his surgical team about positive language and encouragement. ·       Leveraging the mind-body connection for physical benefits:Redirecting blood flow: The script included intentional suggestions for Chris's mind to redirect blood flow away from the surgical site, aiming to improve visibility for the surgeon and potentially reduce bleeding. ·       Facilitating healing: The script reinforced the body's natural ability to heal and encouraged a positive expectation of recovery. ·       Results and Anecdotal Evidence:Chris reports that the imagery script was "instrumental" and he "listened to it religiously," often falling asleep to it, which helped with sleep. ·       He felt mentally prepared and calm going into the surgery. ·       Remarkable Outcome: Chris's surgeon described the Whipple procedure as "one of if not the easiest surgery he's ever done." (Chris Borgstead, recounting the surgeon's words) ·       The surgeon anecdotally confirmed a lack of significant bleeding at the surgical site, aligning with the intention of the imagery script. ·       Chris's recovery has been notably successful, allowing him to regain physical strength and maintain a high quality of life. He is over two years post-surgery, exceeding typical two-year survival rates discussed. ·       Chris shared the imagery script with another individual undergoing a similar surgery, who also reported a positive experience with reduced bleeding, further suggesting a potential impact of the technique. ·       Chris's physical recovery and return to an active lifestyle, including working out with a coach and potentially joining the Franklin County Sheriff's Department as a reserve deputy, serve as tangible evidence of his successful journey. ·       Chris was a finalist for "ultimate guy" in Men's Health magazine, highlighting his physical and mental resilience. 5. The Role of Support and Openness: ·       Chris emphasizes the importance of support networks, specifically highlighting his wife Gina's medical background and comfort level in the hospital environment as crucial. ·       He also underscores the value of being "open to receiving things" and sharing his story to help others. ·       Both Mo and Chris advocate for having an "open mind and a willingness to learn and maybe even step outside your comfort zone" to benefit from techniques like performance imagery. 6. Future of Performance Imagery: ·       Mo Perry believes the potential applications of performance imagery are vast and only limited by one's imagination. ·       He encourages others to learn more about it, recommending Brian Willis's Winning Mind Training. ·       The technique is seen as a powerful tool for "performance excellence" and giving oneself an advantage in any domain. Most Important Ideas/Facts: ·       The significant impact of the mental and psychological aspects (85-90%) on high-level performance. ·       Performance enhancement imagery is a structured technique targeting the subconscious mind to improve performance and well-being. ·       The profound mind-body connection and its potential to influence physical outcomes, as demonstrated by Chris's surgical experience and the anecdotal evidence of reduced bleeding. ·       Chris Borgstead's successful navigation of a life-threatening Whipple surgery, attributed in part to the intentional use of personalized performance imagery. ·       The potential of performance imagery to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and facilitate healing. ·       The accessibility and underutilization of this powerful tool, despite its proven benefits in various fields. Quotes to Consider: ·       "when it comes to high level performance about 85% minimum. Some will say as high as 90% is the mental psychological aspect of um of what's going on inside your mind in the privacy of your own mind." - Mo Perry ·       "performance imagery it it you know to to give a little bit of a history on on it if you go back uh to the 60s and 70s when the uh Eastern block countries really dominated uh uh athletic international sport... they placed a significant emphasis on the mental and psychological aspect of training." - Mo Perry ·       "you can give yourself the advantage through the use of performance enhancement imagery." - Mo Perry ·       "He said you the surgery I had that he conducted on me was one of if not the easiest surgery he's ever done." - Chris Borgstead (recalling his surgeon's statement) ·       "there really wasn't a lot of bleeding like that. You see, and that's kind of what made the surgery so easy." - Chris Borgstead (recalling his surgeon's statement about bleeding) ·       "if you don't put yourself out there you're not going to get anything in return you got to be open to receiving things" - Chris Borgstead ·       "having an open mind and a willingness to learn and maybe even step outside your comfort zone is really critical." - Mo Perry Conclusion: The interviews with Mo Perry and Chris Borgstead provide compelling evidence for the power of performance enhancement imagery. Beyond its traditional applications in sports and professional training, Chris's personal story demonstrates its significant potential in addressing severe health challenges and influencing physical outcomes through the mind-body connection. The discussion highlights the importance of prioritizing mental and psychological well-being as integral components of overall performance and resilience. The interview serves as a powerful testament to the benefits of structured imagery and encourages wider exploration and utilization of this technique.

“Water is a Right: The Fight for Environmental Justice in Detroit” w/ Demeeko WilliamsJoin us with guest Demeeko Williams, Founder and Chief Director of Hydrate Detroit (hydratedetroit.org), to explore the struggle for water justice in one of America's Blackest cities. As part of our Black Liberation and Abolition series, this conversation centers on the racialized politics of water shutoffs, the criminalization of poverty, and the community-led resistance that redefines access to water as a human right — not a commodity.Demeeko will reflect on how systemic disinvestment, environmental racism, and austerity politics have led to Detroiters, predominantly Black and low-income... being denied access to clean water. We unpack how this crisis ties directly into broader abolitionist work: dismantling the structures that make survival a punishment, and building alternatives rooted in care, equity, and collective power.***Turning A Moment Into A Movement Podcast MISSION:To bring awareness, organize, and create content that will be a resource that will aide families, communities, and those seeking Justice for WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS and Injustice. ...and advocating for Justice & Exoneration for GERARD HAYCRAFT. change.org/Justice4GerardTurning A Moment Ino A Moment Team:-Jay Love Host: Founder and Creator of Turning A Moment Into A Movement, The Justice for Gerard Movement, to learn more about The Justice for Gerard Movement go to: www.change.org/Justice4GerardExecutive Board member of Michigan Coalition of Human Rights, G100 Prison Reforms & Reintegration Global Advisory Council Member-Rev. As AI continues to advance and integrate into our daily lives, can it truly be designed to align with our deepest human values and moral principles? If so, how can we ensure that AI not only understands but also respects and promotes our ethical frameworks, without compromising our privacy or hindering our personal growth and autonomy?  John Vervaeke, Christopher Mastropietro, and Jordan Hall embark on a nuanced exploration of the intricate relationship between AI and human flourishing. They explore the concept of "intimate AI," a personalized guardian that attunes to individual biometrics and psychometrics, offering a protective and challenging presence. The discussion underscores the critical importance of privacy, the perils of idolatry, and the urgent need for a new philosophical framework that addresses the meaning crisis. Jordan Hall is a technology entrepreneur with several years of experience building disruptive companies. He is interested in philosophy, artificial intelligence, and complex systems and has a background in law. Hall has worked for several technology companies and was the founder and CEO of DivX. He is currently involved in various think tanks and institutes and is focused on upgrading humanity's capacity for thought and action. Christopher Mastropietro is a philosophical writer who is fascinated by dialogue, symbols, and the concept of self. He actively contributes to the Vervaeke Foundation. What do you think? Send us a textHi everyone. I'm sorry for the delay in releasing this episode. In a minute, we'll get to this week's chat about how female migrant workers are treated after they return to Nepal, but first I want to share some personal news. My stepfather passed away in December, which changed everything. Like many of us he was a migrant. Born on a farm 90 years ago in northwestern Ontario, the centre of Canada, when he was a young man he moved 2,500 km away to Vancouver on the Pacific Ocean. Soon after he moved even further, across what was then Georgia Strait, now the Salish Sea, to Vancouver Island, where my family lived. After he retired, my wife and I, then living in central Canada, encouraged him to visit his hometown. But insisting that he was afraid to fly, he always said no. He also refused to make the trip by train or car. I think maybe he had just become too much of a homebody at that point, preferring to spend his time caring for his yard and small house in a small city. I dedicate this episode to my stepfather, Joe.  This week we're talking with Sunita Mainali, Executive Director of WOREC, an NGO that works on a broad range of women's issues. As I said, we're talking mainly about what happens to female migrant workers after they return from working abroad. As you'll hear, I just assumed that the focus would, and should, be on finding work for these women in Nepal. But I learned quickly that without social reintegration there can be no economic reintegration. One note: Sunita mentions the GCM. That is the Global Coordination Mechanism, an international treaty on migration developed by the United Nations.ResourcesWOREC websiteSend us feedback and ideas. Life = Choices; Choices = Life

In this episode, I have the opportunity to interview my colleague and friend, Tony Lamar2. Tony is the Visionary Architect for Reintegration and Mental Freedom® who has overcome systemic barriers to inspire others to reclaim their strength and potential. With years of lived experience and professional leadership, Tony has shaped criminal justice reform in Georgia, influenced initiatives nationwide, and dedicated his life to helping those impacted by incarceration redefine reintegration. In part 1 of this episode, we discuss Tony's inspiration for creating ReEntry Plus, the difference between Reentry and Reintegration, and why reintegration is crucial to the initial reentry process. Tony also underscores the difference between a journey and becoming. Next week we'll conclude this topic by explaining how Mental Freedom is a cornerstone of Reentry Plus. Tony will share his ReZilient Builders Network and its role in supporting justice-involved and justice-impacted individuals. The interview will conclude with Tony's takeaway message. Finally, you can register for the Relationship Recharge Zoom retreat here.

On this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast, Elliot is joined by Clive and Paul to discuss a few Arsenal topics but also share some thoughts on the legal battle between City and the Premier League. The pod starts with a bit on the impact of Odegaard's return, whenever it may be, and how that will impact overall performances and individual roles. There's a bit on some way-too-early transfer rumors as well. Then the pod asks the lighthearted question of whether the Premier League is about to be embroiled in a Civil War. There's a bit of analysis of the latest legal proceedings but more of the conversation focuses on the overall implications of the League going to war with a member club and how the battle lines have been drawn. All that and more on this edition of the ArsenalVision Podcast.

I (Allison Hare) was recently featured on the top-ranked podcast, She Sells Radio with Elyse Archer. We had a really interesting in-depth conversation about how to reinvent yourself after 40. One thing that has been circulating around my circles is that it can feel really overwhelming when you have built a big life and are realizing what you want - might have evolved into something different - and not sure how to make that pivot. Elyse Archer is a brilliant money and mindset coach and I've been an early client of hers. In fact, she's been featured on this podcast in episode 97 which I will link in the show notes. I thought she asked such insightful questions that I wanted to share our conversation and her work with you here.Allison looks back on feeling the pull to work with Elyse and how it changed her life. It's incredible to see someone put aside the reasons not to and start reinventing themselves.Allison shares what she learned as a child that impacted her career in later years. She explains her background and how she found herself in corporate sales. She suppressed her creative side to choose what she thought would bring her financial stability. It got to a point where she could feel that things were out of alignment. She had to get to the bottom of burnout.Giving a platform to the thing that lights you up the most opens up everything. For many people, it is somewhere around mid-life where they feel the pull to make a big shift.Where do we even start? It can be scary to make big changes, especially “later” in life. There is grief that comes with outgrowing the familiar.Grieving needs to be normalized. Pain is the price of evolution. There is a misconception and belief that many people have that they are not good enough.Allison describes the framework called Boom, Room, and Bloom.Give yourself some room to experiment but think of it like a playground.Limiting beliefs will hold so many back. Allison explains how she reconciled this within herself.Success is a patchwork of creativity and accomplishment that are all in alignment. We don't have to wait for the event that knocks us down so hard and so far to make a change.Life is the sum of your relationships, not your achievemehttps://podcast.allisonhare.com/post/EP97:Girl-You-Need-To-Make-More-Money!w-Elyse-Archernts. In this episode, Ryan and Amy tackle the complicated and often misunderstood topic of reintegration therapy in family law. Following recent media coverage, Ryan and Amy dive into the role of reintegration therapy, its challenges, and how it aims to help children rebuild relationships with estranged parents.Episode Highlights:- What is Reintegration Therapy? Ryan and Amy define reintegration therapy as a therapeutic intervention aimed at helping a child rebuild a strained or severed relationship with one parent.- Challenges with High-Conflict Divorce Cases: They discuss common scenarios where children resist or refuse contact with a parent, stemming from issues like substance abuse, domestic violence, or alienation. They explore the gray areas of determining whether a child's refusal is rooted in safety concerns or emotional influence from one parent.- New Legislation & Media Attention: Recent changes in Colorado law, driven by Caden's Law and national concerns about parental alienation and child abuse, are reshaping the way courts approach reintegration therapy. The statute now requires reunification therapy to meet scientific and safety standards and places stricter limitations on separating children from their primary caregivers solely to repair a relationship with an estranged parent.- Therapist & Court Roles in Reintegration: Ryan and Amy discuss the slow and careful process involved in reintegration therapy, emphasizing the importance of setting realistic goals and understanding that rebuilding trust between a parent and child is often a long-term effort.Key Takeaways:- The Role of Therapy: Therapy can be a powerful tool to help children in high-conflict divorces, but it requires time, patience, and a deep understanding of family dynamics.- New Colorado Law: Focuses on safeguarding children in cases where allegations of abuse or neglect are present, requiring reintegration therapy to be backed by scientific validity and safety.- Realistic Expectations: Reintegration therapy is not a quick fix. It can take months, if not longer, to make progress, particularly in cases involving serious conflict or past trauma.

The focus is on reestablishing or strengthening the relationship between a child and a parent with whom contact has been strained or lost.- The Role of Therapy in High-Conflict Cases: Amy and Dr. McNamara discuss the challenges of parenting in two households, especially in high-conflict situations where children may resist or refuse contact with one parent. The episode highlights how therapy can provide guidance, emotional support, and tools to help families navigate these difficult dynamics.- Family Therapy vs. Reintegration Therapy: Learn the key differences between general family therapy and reintegration therapy. While both aim to improve relationships, reintegration therapy specifically addresses parent-child contact issues in situations where relationships have been disrupted.- Impact of Recent Legislation: Dr. McNamara explains how Cadence Law impacts reintegration therapy, especially in cases involving allegations of abuse or domestic violence. The law now prohibits the court from removing a child from a protective parent or restricting contact with a protective parent to improve the relationship with the accused parent, fundamentally changing the approach in these cases.Key Discussions:- Therapy Structure and Expectations: Dr. McNamara outlines the structure of reintegration therapy, emphasizing that it is a goal-driven, flexible process tailored to each family's unique circumstances. She discusses how therapy can last several months to over a year, depending on the needs and progress of the family.- Measuring Success in Reintegration Therapy: The episode delves into how success is measured in reintegration therapy, including milestones like improved communication, increased comfort in joint sessions, and the rebuilding of trust between parent and child.- The Role of CLRs (Child Legal Representatives): Amy and Dr. McNamara highlight the importance of CLRWhat is Divorce at Altitude? It's no secret that incarcerated folks lack access to adequate mental health care while in prison. Reintegration support is even harder to come by once they are released. Sadly, women face even more significant challenges than men on both counts. But what if more trauma-informed professionals got involved in supporting formerly incarcerated women on both the individual and community levels? On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes Alison Rapping, CEO of Arouet, to discuss the Arizona-based foundation's pre-release, reassimilation, and mentorship programs for formerly incarcerated women. The pair also explore the impact that trauma has made on the lives of Arouet program participants and those in the US criminal justice system.
