Coming in at #10 is the Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone Un Presidente. Southern Draw lands on the 2021 Countdown for a second time. Much like the #18 ranked Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale was an offshoot of the Rose of Sharon line, the Brimstone is an offshoot of the Jacobs Ladder line. Notably, it's the second year in a row each of these blends have placed on the Countdown. Like the original Jacobs Ladder, the Brimstone uses a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper. The remainder of the blend is different. The binder is a USA Maduro and a filler that consists of triple ligero Nicaraguan tobaccos. Late in 2020, Southern Draw introduced a massive 9 x 48 line extension dubbed "Un Presidente." It's easily the longest cigar since the Debonaire 33rd Maduro landed #2 in 2015. Last year, it was the Brimstone Perfecto that landed on the list at #9. Brimstone was originally positioned as a bolder version of the powerhouse Jacobs Ladder blend, but over time I saw the Perfecto mellowed and instead became richer in flavor. In the case of the Brimstone Un Presidente, these cigars were aging in Nicaragua for over a year and already had mellowed a bit. These cigars delivered a medium strength, medium-bodied profile with notes of coffee, earth, fruit, chocolate, red pepper, and toast. It's going to take an investment in time, but it will be worth every second. 2021 is the fifth year Southern Draw Cigars has landed on the Countdown - all of those years have been consecutive since 2017. It's also the fourth time there has been an AJ Fernandez-made cigar on the Countdown. Nicaragua has been the dominant country on this year's Countdown. Of the 21 cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the 15th one from Nicaragua. For details of the 2021 Cigar of the Year Countdown, see our 2021 criteria: https://cigar-coop.com/2021/12/announcement-criteria-for-the-2021-cigar-of-the-year-countdown.html Cigar Coop Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-lJB

Coming in at #18 is the Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale. The Desert Rose was a cigar is an off-shoot of the company's popular Rose of Sharon line. Originally launched in a Belicoso Fino in 2019, that size landed on the 2020 Countdown at #13. 2020 also saw a couple of line extensions to the Desert Rose line, one of which is a 6 x 44 Lonsdale which lands on this year's Countdown. Rose of Sharon is Southern Draw's premium Connecticut Shade line. Desert Rose utilizes a modified blend from the original Rose of Sharon and features a thicker, heartier Ecuadorian Claro wrapper the company calls “Cloud Grown.” The blend uses a Nicaraguan binder from the Condega region and a combination of Honduran Corojo and Dominican Piloto Cubano. As with all Southern Draw cigars, production comes from A.J. Fernandez's factory in Nicaragua. The Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale consists of notes of cream, berry, cedar, baker's spice, and black pepper. This is a cigar that has plenty to offer in terms of flavor nuances and flavor transitions. The flavors delivered are medium-bodied. This cigar is not overpowering - delivering mild to medium strength in the first half before progressing to medium in the second third. This is the fifth year Southern Draw Cigars has landed on the Countdown - all of those years have been consecutive since 2017. Nicaragua continues to be a dominant country of origin for cigars making the 2021 list. Of the 13 cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the ninth one from Nicaragua. Robby and Randy wrap up (no pun intended) exploring Connecticut Shade cigars as they pair the Desert Rose from Southern Draw Cigars with a bee—in this case, a Pilsner-style ale, to be more specific. The Rose of Sharon Desert Rose was the Dojo's number 2 Cigar of the Year in 2019, so the pressure is high to find a great pairing. Robby and Randy will also review the previous Connecticut Shade pairings and discuss what they have learned.
This episode begins with an interview with Joe DesMarais, the New England rep for Southern Draw Cigars as we smoke the Rose of Sharon Lancero, aka “The Thorn.” You may not picture us being willing to smoke any cigar with a pink band, let alone a Lancero, but we will smoke anything once, and that is not just blowing smoke! Does this Southern Draw cigar come out smelling like a rose or leave you thinking you pricked your finger on a thorn smoking it in this vitola?Kendra and Bree wanted to pair it with Chardonay, but Paul wanted to use an IPA. We solved that problem by doing both. Paul and Pastor Padron paired it with a Fiddlehead IPA, Nick paired his with Boom Sauce, and David decided to stick with his first love, Samuel Adams Summer Ale.In the second half of our show we packed our pipes with a straight Virginia blend from Cornell & Diehl called Opening Night. We paired this with an Empress 1908 Gin cocktail. We were mesmerized by the beautiful deep colors of the gin and the bright late springtime flavors or the cocktail, but was Opening Night going to be just as impressive a performance?Pastor Padron shares another Cigar Confession, Paul introduces a new segment talking about what is happening in the industry, and much more!We encourage you to join us each Friday from 7:00-8:30pm EST on our Facebook Page (facebook.com/NJBSpodcast) to be part of the show. The Monday podcast will be an edited version of that live event. This episode is an edited audio recording of our third Facebook Live event which aired on April 24, 2020.This is the only podcast that brings the wealth of knowledge, expertise, and fun of Twins Smoke Shop, New England’s premiere smoke shop, right to you, wherever you are, whenever you want it. Cigar lovers, watch and get inspired. Southern Draw, a Texas-based, Nicaraguan-made cigar company has gotten creative—and not just with its cigar names and blends. Through its IGNITE program, Southern Draw is sharing its success while adhering to charitable giving guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. (Since August 2016, FDA regulations prohibit those in the cigar industry from the decades-long tradition of donating cigars to charities.) Founder Robert Holt explains how doing good is just as important as making good cigars. Robert Holt came into the cigar business after careers in the military and telecommunications. Now, he’s at the helm of Southern Draw, whose cigars are made exclusively by AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua. In a recent interview he did with Cigar Snob's Nick Jiménez not long before the annual IPCPR trade show in Las Vegas, he talked about his life before cigars, what it’s been like to work with his wife Sharon (the namesake of Southern Draw Rose of Sharon, which he and Nick were smoking during this conversation) and how he and Sharon have made their faith and values the cornerstone of their business approach. Easily one of our most popular episodes each year is where we make our annual predictions about the Top 10 from Cigar Aficionado. Barry, David, Ed, and Mr. Jonathan will offer their own Top 10 list for each magazine. How accurate will they be? With the lists coming out soon we won't have long to wait… We will also light up something from Southern Draw Cigars as we sit down with Robert Holt and find out a little about his company who has his cigars made by AJ Fernandez. We will also be joined by his local representative and stogie geek, Joe D. In the second hour we will light up a cigar from The Cigar Authority care package, the AJ Fernandez Enclave and share the usual bag of tricks known of Debonaire Mr. J, Asylum Barry, Cigar News and a Classic 3 Way. The Cigar Authority is a member of the United Podcast Network and is recorded live in front of a studio audience at Studio 21 Podcast Cafe upstairs at Two Guys Smoke Shop in Salem, NH and as always you can find many of the cigars we discuss at http://www.2GuysCigars.com/.
