Host: Drifter Guest: Cyrus Meet Cyrus Norcross: A Journey to Sobriety and Advocacy Cyrus Norcross started his journey to sobriety on May 25, 2019. But Cyrus is more than his journey through addiction; he's also dedicated to serving others, telling stories, and making a difference. He has battled his own personal demons and wrestled with alcohol addiction, a journey that led him to the transformative path of sobriety. His story serves as an inspiring example of triumph over adversity and the importance of loving one's self and accepting one's flaws in recovery. Before his recovery, Cyrus served as an Army Ranger, showing bravery and commitment. He joined in 2007, spent four years with the 75th Ranger Regiment, and two more with the 4th Infantry Division. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, earning an honorable discharge in 2013. Afterward, he became a military contractor, training the Royal Air Force in ground maneuvers. His role involved simulating encounters with terrorist forces, gathering intelligence, and disrupting their networks. He's also a contributing author in the book "Violence of Action: The Untold Stories of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the War on Terror." Cyrus is also a award-winning journalist from the Navajo Nation. His articles and photos have appeared in Indian Country Today, Native News Online, The Navajo Times, and Source New Mexico. He's known for investigating the missing and murdered indigenous people on the Navajo Nation, but he covers a wide range of topics, from sports to art festivals. He's won journalism awards from the Military Veterans in Journalism Association, the Native American Journalists Association, and the Arizona Newspaper Association. Cyrus is also working on documentary about K9 search and rescue on the Navajo Nation. He's writing a book about his experiences at the 2016 Standing Rock Protest on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, where people fought against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Join us on the Sobertown Podcast to hear Cyrus Norcross's inspiring journey—from military service to journalism to sobriety advocacy. His story is all about redemption, resilience, and a relentless drive to create a brighter future for everyone. At a time when fake news is said to have helped swing an election result, finding varied and reliable sources of information has never been more important. But with traditional broadcast platforms under siege from a slew of digital competitors expanding at a rate of knots, how do we ensure the integrity of storytelling in our post truth world? With social media posts and audience comment providing a constant feedback loop for the creation of their short form content, organisations like Buzzfeed can quickly rack up global audience numbers that most broadcasters and long form filmmakers can only dream about – think the Standing Rock Protest in the US - and they can also get their material out there far faster than long form filmmakers ever could. The traditionalists might argue that the short form model doesn’t provide for the context and rigorous examination that their subjects require. But are they doing themselves a disservice by ignoring what’s going on in the digital space and missing an opportunity to add vital weapons to their storytelling arsenal? In this session, Nicola Harvey (Managing Editor, Buzzfeed Australia) joins award-winning director Anna Broinowski (Pauline Hanson: Please Explain!) and journalist Matt Davis (Foreign Correspondent) to explore the connection between social media and the political documentary and discuss how important the viral video can be to short AND long form video journalism.

Kelly Daniels--photographer, activist and Standing Rock advocate--has returned home from Standing Rock, but she (like many of us) is aware this war is not over. She returns to Girl Power Hour to discuss the current state of affairs at Standing Rock. One Sacred Fire has been extinguished, but another has been lit. This is not over. However, there has been a great deal of confusion. It seems tribal leaders are expressing different opinions of how to move forward. As such, Kelly Daniels wants to help us understand what is really going on and how we can continue to help and stand with Standing Rock. Kelly Daniels is a professional photographer in Overland Park Kansas. For 25 years, she has specialized in recording interactive families and children. She is on her fourth trip to the Oceti Sakowin camp at the Standing Rock Protest to bring awareness to the truth behind the community of prayerful families, elders and children that are the backbone and reason for this movement. Her company is called The Kelly Gallery. Kelly is speaking about Standing Rock in Kansas City at the International Day of the Girl. She does presentations for organizations and schools to spread the word in the Kansas City area.

It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. William Katz lectures on The Standing Rock Protest against the XL Pipeline and Black Lives Matter to the history uncovered in Black Indians. Why Black Lives Matter is fighting alongside Dakota Access Pipeline protesters On Aug. 27, Black Lives Matter activists from Minneapolis and Toronto traveled to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which straddles North and South Dakota, to support indigenous tribes protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). And now, members of New York City's most active BLM groups plan on visiting Standing Rock this week to prevent the proposed 1,172-mile, four-state oil pipeline from being built on Native treaty lands. Image: These donated supplies, which were collected at the Rally for Standing Rock in New York City's Washington Square Park on Sept. 9, 2016, will be delivered to #NoDAPL protesters in North Dakota.
