Are you curious about the greatest con artists in the world of wine? What creative but illegal ingredients have been added to wine to cut costs and boost profits? What is it about tales of crime and greed that draw us in? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Rebecca Gibb, author of Vintage Crime: A Short History of Wine Fraud. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you are going to be the lucky recipients of a copy of Rebecca Gibb's book, Vintage Crime: A Short History of Wine Fraud. To enter, email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and tell me that you'd like to win a copy. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights What was it like to represent Great Britain as an athlete at the age of 19? Where did Rebecca's interest in the cello come from? Why has Rebecca decided to donate a portion of her book's royalties to finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy? Why did Rebecca decide to write about the riots in Champagne in 1911? What is it about tales of crime and greed that draw us in? What's the meaning of the MICE acronym used to describe the motivations behind committing fraud? How have coercion and ego played a role in wine fraud over the years? Do you have to be a wine person to appreciate Rebecca's book, Vintage Crime? What was the most popular method of wine fraud in Ancient Rome? Which unusual methods did vintners try in an effort to restore vineyards after the phylloxera epidemic in the late 1800s? How did it come to be that there was more Champagne being sold than produced during World War I? Key Takeaways I enjoyed Rebecca's stories about the greatest con artists in the world of wine. I think we all love a juicy story about people trying to get one over on others. Call it whatever the wine version is of schadenfreude. I agree that part of what helps con artists get away with what they do is that people don't want to admit they have been duped. That's pride and human nature. I was intrigued by the creative but illegal ingredients that have been added to wine to cut costs and boost profits. There's a fine line between what's adulteration and what isn't. Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. Hold onto your bellybuttons, because it’s finally here! This week we had the pleasure of sitting down with the lovely gals of Wine & Crime to discuss “glow up” stories… Don’t worry, Christine had to google it too. Em takes “glowing up” quite seriously with their coverage of the Flying Dutchman and his glowing, skeleton-filled ship. Meanwhile, Christine takes somewhat of a left turn and covers the story of serial killer Jake Bird and his murderous hex that left six people dead. It was a glow up for him, but a glow down for the rest of the world. And that’s why we drink! Check out Wine & Crime on your favorite podcasting app, or at http://www.wineandcrimepodcast.com! He was supposed to be a force for good in the system. A criminal justice major who went to one party off campus. It was the last thing he ever did. This is one case among many. But some who listen to this month’s episode will say it’s many cases explained by one. So far, our cases have stopped at the borders of American law enforcement; the failures of agencies, the era and date in time of the case, and sometimes just plain bad luck. This month, unavoidably, features an added dimension; one that will inevitably expand our conversation beyond the case at hand. But this remains true: a young man’s life was taken, and it needn’t have been. And nobody is today in jail for the crime. When we begin our investigation of a case each month, we don’t really (honestly) have any idea how it’s going to go! So far in this series, we’ve brought you first person investigators and people directly related to the case in some way. In this case, though it may or may not surprise you once you learn about more, we weren’t able to talk to anyone with direct knowledge of the events or the investigation in the amount of time we have to examine the case. Sometimes, that’s going to happen. So, we had a choice: we could keep working the case, in the hopes that we landed our sources in a few weeks, or even more… which would delay the chapter’s release; we could bag the whole chapter and start over; or we could release sort of a partial chapter. And that is what this is… we’re calling this month’s single download our first Dossier episode. Are you going to the first annual True Crime Podcast Festival in July 2019 in Chicago? You should! We will be there along with many other amazing podcasts including but not limited to some of our personal favorites such as: Wine & Crime , Getting Off , Trace Evidence , Criminology, and All Crime No Cattle! State of the Sitcom continues... We push ever forward in our miniseries taking on all things sitcom from I Love Lucy to Rick & Morty and everything in between! In this third episode we're joined by @Amanda, @Kenyon & Lucy, the criminally talented hosts of the Wine & Crime podcast to discuss the salad tossing and egg scrambling modern classic, Frasier. Right from the start we get on like a house on fire covering the characters, writing and crepe pan seasoning impact of the show and even manage to bring up some true crime, the US political shitshow and exactly how Kelsey Grammar got his hair like that. We had a blast recording this and can highly recommend pouring yourself a glass of vino and joining the Wine & Crime podcast on their "obnoxiously active" social media accounts! Tune in next week for more special guests and maybe a simple motorcyclist and angry cow talking doped up biscuits! Happy Sitcom-ing, JoJ x
UFF-DA! It’s finally here! We are so thrilled to get the gals from Wine & Crime on the show to discuss some “wine-adjacent” stories. Em tells the crazy story of a haunted Missouri winery called Belvoir, where you can find ghost orphans, ghost elders, and, of course, wine. Meanwhile, Christine covers the tragic murder of Nancy Lyon, whose husband Richard "Dick" Lyon poisoned her vitamins, soda, and WINE! Be sure to check out our appearance on Wine & Crime by checking them out wherever you listen to podcasts, at their site [www.wineandcrimepodcast.com](www.wineandcrimepodcast.com), or on social media @WineandCrimePod!
This week the Girlfriends are chatting about a favorite podcast, Wine & Crime, and their recent tale of a tragic murder that hits close to home. They then discuss one of the most disturbing cases of child sexual assault in our nation's history, local former doctor and serial child molester Larry Nassar, his abuse and betrayal of trust. The discussion turns to those to be celebrated - the brave women who came forward and Judge Rosemarie Aquilina who presided over the case with authority and compassion for the survivors. Cocktail of the day: Vanilla Old Fashioned 1.5 oz Vanilla Crown Royal .25 oz Simple Syrup 2-3 dashes bitters Stir together with ice in a cocktail shaker, pour into rocks glasses filled with ice and garnish with an orange peel.

Hard Time: Life with Sheriff Joe Arpaio in America's Toughest JailSheriff Joe Arpaio is known as the Angel of Death--Shaun Attwood served 26 months in Arpaio's jail before being sentenced to prison. Prison was easier. This is his story - as told on Locked-Up Abroad "Raving Arizona."Shaun Attwood was a millionaire day trader in Arizona, but his hedonistic lifestyle of drugs and parties came to an abrupt end in 2002 when a SWAT team smashed his door. Shaun found himself on remand in Maricopa jail with a $750,000 cash bond and all of his assets seized. The nightmare was only just beginning as he was submerged in a jail in which rival gangs vied for control, crystal meth was freely available, and where breaking rules could result in beatings or death. KISS Susie grew a vegetable container garden for the first time this year, and has had great success with lettuces, radishes, cucumbers, sweet peppers and hot peppers. She has turned into a pickle-making machine. Danie's family has started exploring the wonders of whey by making their own yogurt and cheese.

Hark! It's the 87th Precinct Podcast - Lady Killer (1958)! Yes, Lady Killer, not Killer's Wedge (that's next up!). We discuss the seventh novel in the sequence and along the way deal with the films and infrastructure developments in 1958 Britain, Paul has a Wine & Crime moment (www.twitter.com/wineandcrimepod), Stevo becomes possessed by the Heart of Paul Carrick and we sing ribald satirical songs in not-particularly tuneful ways. A bonus episode will be coming along soon - probably as will a message about us moving over to Hearthis.at from Soundcloud - once I've figured out all the RSS things. In the meantime, sharing and reviewing however and wherever is appreciated!
