EP 385: Interview with Jonathan Schwartz

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2025 39:06

Host: Michal Charles aka MMC13 Guest: Jonathan Schwartz   In this episode of Sobertown Podcast, host Michal interviews Jonathan Schwartz, former Hollywood financial advisor turned addiction advocate and sober warrior. Jonathan shares his journey from managing the wealth of celebrities like Beyoncé, Linkin Park and Alanis Morissette to battling his own addictions with gambling and drugs, which led to embezzlement of millions of dollars and eventual imprisonment. He discusses his childhood trauma, the impact of addiction on his life, and his path to redemption through recovery. Now a licensed therapist, Jonathan focuses on helping others overcome addiction by connecting with their emotions and resolving past traumas. He emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, accountability, and community support in achieving and maintaining sobriety.   Jonathan Todd Schwartz, once a towering figure in Hollywood's elite financial circles, lived a life that many could only dream of. As a power entertainment business manager at GSO Business Management, Schwartz was entrusted with managing the wealth of some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, including Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Alanis Morissette, Linkin Park, Halsey, and Gwyneth Paltrow. His reputation as one of Hollywood's most "trusted" financial advisors earned him the moniker "diva whisperer," a reflection of his ability to cater to the unique needs of his high-profile clients. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly perfect life, Schwartz was hiding a dark secret. Consumed by a monstrous drug habit and an uncontrollable gambling addiction, Schwartz began to embezzle millions from his clients to fund his destructive lifestyle. His double life was a carefully constructed house of cards, built on lies and deceit, which ultimately came crashing down in 2016 when Alanis Morissette discovered that Schwartz had stolen over $4.7 million from her accounts. The fallout was swift and brutal. Schwartz's crimes were exposed, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction. The once-celebrated financial guru was now a disgraced criminal, reviled by the very industry that once revered him. His actions not only ruined his own life but also brought significant financial losses and reputational damage to GSO Business Management. But Schwartz's story doesn't end with his fall from grace. Since his release from prison in 2020, Schwartz has embarked on a journey of redemption. Sober and a co-chair of his local Gambler's Anonymous, he is determined to make amends for his past wrongdoings. Schwartz is now dedicated to proving that he is no longer the "defrauding monster" he once was, and is desperate to clear his name, particularly with his ex-wife and children, who continue to harbor doubts about his sincerity. Schwartz's life is a tale of extremes— from the heights of Hollywood success to the depths of criminal infamy. It raises the question: Can Jonathan truly change, or is this just another act in a long-running con? Schwartz's story is a compelling exploration of human nature, redemption, and the thin line between good and evil. In his own words, Schwartz acknowledges his flaws and the damage he has caused, but he remains committed to telling his story, hoping that it will serve as a cautionary tale for others and perhaps, one day, lead to his own redemption. His story is a modern-day parable, echoing the themes of the latest viral scammer tales like Inventing Anna, Tinder Swindler, and Bad Vegan—a once-in-a- lifetime narrative that promises to captivate and dominate public consciousness.  Altus Rehab Instagram: @therealjonathanschwartz     About Michal: Michal is an American podcaster and sober warrior who believes every recovery journey is as unique as the individual traveling it. Started drinking when I was 17 first drink showed me that I could be happy by replacing my anxiety my fear my depression with alcohol. Went to college just north of Pittsburgh. I join a fraternity and became a social butterfly. I found that drinking allowed me to be a better version of me. I was fun, outgoing, adventurous, and just wanted to have a good time. Drink my way through college graduate with honors. Then went into the job course. Worked a ton of different jobs because I didn't know what I wanted to do. I came a truck driver in 2001. Became a cop in 2007. Resigned from the police department in 2019. went back to driving a truck in 2019. During my time with the police department I saw a lot of things that deeply affected me. Three of my friends got murdered on April 4 of 2009. I was also in Brooklyn during Ground Zero 911 Tax. Never dealt with my traumas. Became a sustained heavy drinker in my early 30s. Got divorced in 2020. Went into a tailspin. My drinking became more frequent and heavier degree. In 2023 I was drinking a half gallon a night every night and driving a truck for a living hung over. Early May 2023 I was drunk loaded my Glock 43 and we all know what was gonna happen from there. Host: Michal Charles aka MMC13 Guests: Alex & Julie   Early Days Podcast-group discussion In this episode of 'Early Days Podcast,' host Michal is joined by Alex and Julie to discuss the reactions from friends and family when they announce their decision to quit drinking, and how sometimes those can be more harmful than good. They delve into personal experiences, the many stigmas around addiction, and the importance and value in having support systems in recovery. This dialogue could be particularly beneficial to those who don't have a personal history with addiction, as it may shed some light on how to provide support to those who reach out for help.   About Alex: Alex started her journey towards recovery in 2023, and while the road is not always straight, and the journey not always linear,  she continually commits to sticking to it amidst an alcohol obsessed world.  A music, book, and film lover, she is thrilled to have found a network of incredible sober friends throughout her time on this journey. She welcomes any opportunity to share her own journey, listen to others, and help in any way possible. Alex was born and raised (and still resides!) in Brooklyn, New York, where she works as an HR Professional. She sings and records music with her husband in two bands: a rock band she has been a member of for over a decade, the other, a newer project with a more lo-fi sound. Music is her greatest joy and has saved her soul more times than she can count.   About Julie: Julie is in the early stages of her sobriety journey, having joined the I Am Sober community in 2022. After experiencing multiple slip-ups, she found Sobertown's Zoom meetings, which provided her with support and tools necessary to maintain sobriety. Joining the Sobertown community has made the biggest difference due to the connection and validation she received from others going through similar struggles. Julie is excited to celebrate her one-year milestone in April 2025 and is passionate about giving back to the sober community, particularly through hosting Sobertown's ladies meetings. She believes that recovery is not linear and that a slip-up is not a setback but an opportunity to learn and continue on the path of recovery. Julie hopes to break the stigma and stereotypes surrounding addiction --  "We recover out loud so others don't die in silence." Originally from Southern California, Julie relocated to Central Pennsylvania in 2024 for her career. An avid hiker, she finds peace and spiritual connection in nature. In her downtime, Julie enjoys watching and discussing thriller and horror films, indoor gardening, and spoiling her senior kitty.   About Michal: Michal is an American podcaster and sober warrior who believes every recovery journey is as unique as the individual traveling it. Host: Deborah Battista aka King13 Guest: Lori aka (LivingTheSweetLife)   Why do we get stuck in our Addiction? Living The Sweet Life and King 13 unravel this frustrating subject.  Why can't I stop?  The medical reason is repeat alcohol consumption results in changes in the BASAL GANGLIA associated with reward and cognition and is primarily involved in motor control, effectively choosing which actions to allow and which actions to inhibit.    Our brain chemistry changes, releasing dopamine, creating pleasurable feelings, leading to a desire to repeat the experience & become addicted.  We also get stuck because we cannot imagine how we will face life without alcohol when it is such a part of our social 'norm'.   Giving up drinking, getting honest about your pain, trauma & issues and the stigma can also keep you stuck. It is not a moral judgement, it is a chemical imbalance.  If you are 'feeling stuck' we hope this podcast will motivate you to become 'unstuck' and get sober curious.  Start or continue to work on building your sober toolbox and get connected to others that will provide support. About Lori Lori (LivingTheSweetLife) spent the better part of 20 years feeling stuck in her pattern of drinking. As early as 20 years old, she had feelings of wanting to be able to control her drinking or stop altogether, but she couldn't. Some of the things that kept her stuck were: Normalization of alcohol, loss of identity, fear of not belonging, denial that she really had a problem, and not knowing where to look for help. Debs (King13) and Lori talk about being stuck and share some of the ways and things that helped to come unstuck.   About The Host: Deborah Battista aka King 13 began hosting podcasts not long after Sobertown launched. Host: Drifter Guest: Julie   Julie's Journey: From Addiction to Sobriety In this episode of the Silvertown podcast, Drifter welcomes Julie, a guest from the UK, who shares her compelling story of addiction, recovery, and the myriad of ways she has turned her life around. Julie discusses her initial encounters with alcohol during her teenage years, her time working in the high-pressure environment of the London trading floor, and the subsequent breakdowns that led her to reassess her life choices. Julie delves into her journey through therapy, the gradual buildup of her sobriety toolkit, and her experience with supportive communities like Smart Recovery. Now thriving five years sober, Julie explains how she maintains her mental and physical well-being today.   Julie is business psychologist, breathwork facilitator, and emotional aromatherapist who helps people to find purpose, connection and vitality.  Whether that is breaking free from addictions to alcohol and medication, or the repeated cycles and patterns of behaviours that keep us stuck, she is passionate about empowering people to feel better.  Like so many, she spent years in a world where drinking was completely normalised and expected, and at times,  even celebrated. From high-pressure corporate environments to social settings, alcohol was woven into everyday life, making it difficult to recognise when it was no longer serving her. In her early twenties, after enduring  extreme emotional stress and workplace abuse whilst working on the trading floor in London,  she experienced a brief episode of psychosis and hospitalisation. Julie was prescribed medication that she remained on for over a decade, and was also using alcohol to self medicate, which led to a slow process of disconnection, sedation, and losing touch with herself.  Her story is ultimately one of healing, courage, self-discovery, and finding true freedom. Now, over five years sober, she is on a mission to help others step into clarity, vitality, and empowerment through holistic healing, breathwork, and deep inner work. Julie is the founder of Little Brown Bottles and Consciously Collaborative and blends Eastern and Western approaches to wellbeing, in and out of the workplace. Her latest project, The Freedom Challenge: 30 Days to an Alcohol-Free Life, offers a supportive and structured path for those questioning their relationship with alcohol and looking for a new way forward. I tried for almost two decades to get sober but kept relapsing. Even while working in the girls and trying to raise my daughters alone. I went through bad relationships, drug addiction, and alcoholism. I finally decided to move back to my home town and get my life together. The 12 steps are a huge part of my recovery but I also used the vivitrol shot. The vivitrol shot was a game changer for me. The last almost 3 years have been amazing and my goal from here on is just to help as many women as I can. Host: Drifter Guest: Horseman   Horseman is from the rural countryside located in the rainbow nation, South Africa. He has been married to the same beautiful girl, that still loves him, after more than forty four years. They have three grown up children, four grandchildren, a Labrador dog and a few chickens that scratch in the back yard.  He lost most of his hearing when he was five years old due to a freak accident at home. He experienced bullying and ridiculing as a young child because he attended a public school. His father encouraged him, due to these circumstances, to learn the martial art of karate, that resulted in him he being qualified as a young, teenage instructor, teaching others to fight. He can fortunately hear much better now, due to wireless technology for profound deafness.  Another hobby that shaped him as a young person was when he learned to ride horses. His IAS pseudonym is therefore based on his love and strong relationship with these special animals. He actually wanted to be an expert with animals like horses, but ended up as a specialist with digital machines.  He was part of a musical family that helped him to become a proficient classic and blues guitar player - obviously he often turns the volume up, far too loud! He started having drinking issues during his professional career as an international ICT Consultant. The corporate life, job pressure, travel, etc. caused him to gradually slip down the alcohol pitcher plant, while acting as a fully functional expert across the world. In spite of this he managed to protect his marriage but in the end he decided to quit his ICT career ambitions for the sake of his family.  Horseman is known for this motto: Love never fails

EP 350: Nancy's Recovery Story

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2024 69:49

Nancy Newton Bio Nancy was born in Houston, Texas, and was a Physical Therapist turned stay at home Mom who dabbled in her Catholic church Music Ministry for a time as she was raising her 3 children.  When she returned to her job as a PT at the age of 46 after a 9-year hiatus, she began her long painful descent into the slow process of becoming addicted to alcohol.  This descent included a resurgence of a food/exercise addiction that she had struggled with most of her life from the early teen years but was able to recover from when she found her way into the rooms of Overeaters Anonymous in her 30's, her first exposure to a 12-step program. This progressed in her 50's to more regular drinking, and by the time she was in her late 50's and early 60's, a full-on addiction to a daily intake of alcohol which often included a full bottle of wine or 2 very strong frozen margaritas from the local Mexican food restaurant, and perhaps some additional topping off to get through the day.   She also relapsed into her binging/starving/overexercising addiction until she was 50+ pounds heavier and suffering from extreme depression, lack of motivation and the desire to socially isolate, inability to sleep and the need for increased anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medicines to cope. There were multiple attempts to quit alcohol and food abuse, trying therapy and even walking through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous. These attempts were in vain until one day she discovered The Naked Mind book by Annie Grace. On August 4, 2022, she began her journey into sobriety.   On the Naked Mind website she found the information that led her to the Thursday am early doors Sobertown Zoom meetings. (Thank you, Fluffy All Heart!!!) Getting out of isolation and reconnecting to others in those sessions allowed her to find the strength and courage to take the necessary steps to get sober.  She now is 19 months sober and embarking on a new life after slowly beginning to implement the tools she found necessary to her sobriety.  These tools include daily Yoga, meditation, inspirational music, reading, cardiovascular exercise, healthy eating, Sobertown Zoom meetings, and reestablishing or finding new ways to connect to others.  These tools allow her to go through life more mindfully, cherishing the relationships between family and friends and understanding the real meaning and purpose for her life.   In November, after a return home from a trip to Spain, she was painfully aware of her longstanding tendency to set goals and reach them while not at all being mindful or enjoying the process.  It became a real source of frustration for her and the main topic of discussion in a therapy session.  There, her therapist of many years, introduced her to Kirtana and the Deathbed song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1khh5AHacgU This one song began some new insights into how she would begin to make the necessary changes in the last quarter of her life so that she would not miss out on any of the “holy” moments that give life meaning for her: Connection to others, Courage to step out of her comfort zones, Calmness and moving more slowly through her day, and following through on all Commitments she makes to others.  This has become a daily practice as she starts each day.   She hopes that her story of her journey will inspire others to hang in there through the process of becoming sober. Change can be slow, and it is so important to look at this process as an unfolding of possibilities that will continue to move in a forward direction, if you commit to staying on the path. It is worth every bit of grit and determination that is required.                                                         Nancy is retired, and currently lives with her wonderful husband of 40 years in McKinney Texas.      Other Sober Resources: I Am Sober App Getting Sober ...Again Boom Rethink The Drink Recovery Movie Meet-Ups No Sippy No Slippy. Host: Drifter Guest: Melissa   Hi my name is Melissa Hubenak. I am a 41 year old mother of three amazing sons. I am also a widow. I began this recovery journey on June 28th of 2021. My childhood was full of trauma including physical mental emotional and sexual abuse.  Both my parents were Alcoholic addicts.  But I never thought that it was the reason I used drugs and alcohol. Growing up I partied because I thought it was fun. I loved experimenting and out drinking everyone at a party. I broke my back the summer before my senior year. That is how I learned about addiction from an addicts perspective. The best drug dealer I would ever know was my doctor. My addiction would follow me overseas where by the age of 21 I was prescribed fentanyl patches and oxycontin. My first blessing came in the form of a felony charge. The judge sentenced me to probation and a methadone maintenance clinic. This would not be the first time my felonies would turn into a blessing because of an Angel disguised as a judge. I eventually married the love of my life. We had three beautiful boys. That maintenance program gave the ability to have a normal life.  Things were great until my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer. In 2018 he passed away. And two weeks later I lost my cousin to murder by fentanyl. I died with them. The stay at home wife and mother became a homeless, drug addicted felon. Today I have a home, a car, a job, and most importantly my children back. I couldn't be more grateful.  Today I have Faith that is unshakable because of a God that is all powerful. Desperation led me to surrender. God met me where I was at. He placed angels all around me. I tell people all the time, “I am living in the midst of prayers answered and dreams come true. I have such a beautiful life.” I am lucky enough to have a job helping others working in mental health. I recently finished training to become a recovery coach. Which I can't wait to apply to my goals of helping those seeking to restore their life. The biggest gift I have been given is the opportunity to open a sober living with my best friend as my partner. We were given two properties and are building a network of resources to offer the best support possible for the persons that come to us for help. I had no idea that day, in summer of 2021, would lead me on an adventure like this. The good times are amazing and the bad times just aren't as bad. Today I live in the moment. Embrace every opportunity. Love Hard. Fight Hard. And I have never been so High. I hope you have a GREAT DAY ON PURPOSE. FRESH BLESSING. MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT. Host: Drifter Guest: Michal aka MMC13   Michal aka MMC13 lives in Albuquerque New Mexico with her houseful of 4-legged family. She's an avid animal rescuer and transport driver. Her history with addiction started in her early teens, and her recovery journey began in her late 20s. She's a firm believer that connection beats addiction, there's no such thing as a one size fits all recovery program, and that recovery is not linear, and she strives to spread those messages to anyone who may benefit from hearing them. Podcast summary: Michal's recovery journey has not been linear, and although she's been in and around recovery for 16 years, she's had some detours along the way. In this episode, Michal aka MMC13 and Drifter dive into some of the things that may push a person with extensive consecutive sobriety to decide to try drinking again. Michal shares about the headspace she was in, some of the triggers she faced, and what she's trying to do differently this time. This is the pilot episode in an ongoing series which will follow Michal's journey and specifically examine the struggles and successes she experiences along the way.   Other Sober Resources: I Am Sober App Getting Sober ...Again Boom Rethink The Drink Recovery Movie Meet-Ups No Sippy No Slippy. Host: Drifter Guest: PollyA   My name is Pollya. 31/2 years ago, I opened the door to a new and better life, a sober life. During these last 3 1/2 years I have learnt to manage my life and deal with my emotions on a daily basis without alcohol but with the loving and supportive sober communities in IAS and Sobertown.  Two years into my sobriety, I lost my husband of 19 years Daniel. I have navigated the hard journey of grief without my crutch, alcohol, so honoring his memory.  I have learned that life after alcohol is filled with memorable moments. Moments I remember and take great joy in. I have traveled extensively to Australia, Alaska, various parts of the USA smiling all the while.  I recently moved from the USA back to the UK and making yet another life for myself.  My life is full of family, sober friends, future travel plans and just the sheer joy of waking up in a state of freedom.  FU alcohol and No Sippy No slippy. EP 335: Kevin Beaufrand's Recovery Story

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 24, 2023 57:41

Host: Drifter Guest: Kevin Beaufrand I grew up in the Caribbean on the French island of Martinique. I have always been athletic, and for the most part, I had a wonderful childhood playing outside with my friends, climbing trees, and playing hide and seek! All this took a radical turn when my father suddenly died in a motorcycle accident in 1999. I was only 11 years old back then. He and I were very close, and I desperately needed a father figure at that age, so this was extremely difficult. I am the youngest of 3 brothers. Both my brothers were living on another island at the time, which meant it was just my mother and I in the house. My mother was very strong; she had to be. I did my best to be a good supportive son, and things went relatively well (as well as can be after suddenly losing your dad) until the age of 13 years old when I discovered alcohol. On that day, I knew right away that something was not right; alcohol made me feel good, way too good. That is when things took a turn for the worse. I did not fully realize it back then, but that day when I had my first sip of alcohol would trigger a chaotic slippery slope of a long nightmare. For the next 18 years, I would try again and again to quit, only to relapse, to try to quit again, and again and again… between the denial I was in and the amazingly strong grip alcohol had on me, I felt for the longest time as if I would never be able to find long-lasting sobriety. That is until I found my calling to help others! By May 2019 (when I had my last drink), I had been a personal trainer for 6 years. Those 6 years were some of the hardest. As I descended deeper into my addiction while simultaneously preaching health to my clients, I was a fraud and felt like one. If I wanted to help others, I had to help myself first and foremost! That's when I knew enough was enough. I had to make a change. You see, up until now, I had only used exercise to get healthy, which is just one of the health pillars (foundation). The five health pillars are nutrition, movement (exercise), mindset, sleep, and community. If any of those are not cherished, you can rest assured that you will not thrive. So I put all the chances on my side this time and cherished my health as a whole! I adopted a new mindset, started eating better, exercising, sleeping better, and perhaps more importantly, packed all my belongings, changed my phone number, and moved to North Carolina (from Florida). I am sure you heard this saying before: “you are who your friends are,” and that is true, especially in addiction. I needed new friends and a new environment if I wanted long-lasting sobriety. With my newfound health commitment and the support of my wonderful wife and friends, I am approaching 5 years of sobriety. Since then, on top of being a personal trainer, I have decided to become a nutritionist, a sobriety coach, and a mindset coach in order to help my clients cherish all 5 health pillars so they can have lifelong results. Today, I am obsessed with helping my clients find new ways to improve mentally, physically, and spiritually one day at a time. I never thought in my life that I would find my passion, let alone my purpose. But here it is: my purpose is to help and guide others who are struggling with addiction by eliminating limiting beliefs, and making the most appropriate health choices in order for them to find long-lasting sobriety and unlock their full potential. We only have one life, and our health is our most precious gift; we must cherish it! Alright, so let's dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you've had to overcome? It is not my intention to be dark in the description of my life; it just so happens that for 20 years, my life was just that dark. It has been the opposite of a smooth road. I cannot possibly list all of the bumps and obstacles I encountered during my 18 years binge; this will have to be for one of the future books I will write. So instead, I will leave you with some major timelines of obstacles: 11 years old: I lost my dad tragically and suddenly (he was gone in a few hours, and I did not have time to say goodbye). 12 years old: Started having major panic attacks and suicidal thoughts, first time seeing therapist (first of many). 13 years old: Found alcohol; this started the 18 years of a nightmare filled with lies, deception, puking, and worrying that today may be my last. 17 years old: I lost my best friend tragically and suddenly in a boating accident. 18 years old: Major car crash onto incoming traffic (lost driver's license after only 3 weeks having it and nearly killed someone). 19 years old: Started acne treatment in France, went terrible, and triggered suicidal thoughts (had to stop treatment early). 20 years old: Moved to Florida and started experimenting with harder drugs. 24 years old: 4 days in hospital due to rhabdomyolysis (deadly condition due to excessive workout and alcohol & cocaine overdose). 30 years old: Went to rehab for 6 weeks but relapsed 6 months later. 31 years old: Clean and sober for good. 36 years old (TODAY): On a mission to help as many people as possible find sobriety and avoid the mistakes I made by caring for their bodies and mind as a whole, loving themselves, and living life to the fullest.
