GDP Script/ Top Stories for Nov 3rd Publish Date: Nov 2nd Hennsler: 15 From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Friday, November 3rd and happy 73rd birthday to boxer Larry Holmes. ***LARRY HOLMES*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Kia Mall of Georgia. Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend's 40 Under 40 list Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment Plus, my conversations with the director of marketing Jon Carr from the Aurora Theater and Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss net carbs. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend's 40 Under 40 list The Georgia First Generation Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Gwinnett County, was founded following a business competition pitch at Georgia State University in 2016. Charbel Aoun and Francisco Martinez, both first-generation college students, recognized the barriers faced by students pursuing higher education and established the foundation to support these students and create a sense of belonging and community for them. To date, Georgia FirstGen has established student chapters in seven Gwinnett County high schools, assisting 750 first-generation students with a 95%+ college acceptance rate. Aoun, who is now a third-year pharmacy student, was recently recognized by Georgia Trend magazine's 40 Under 40 class of 2023 for his dedication to equitable access to higher education and mentorship. STORY 2: Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again Child poverty in the United States surged in 2022, with more children living in poverty than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had initially reduced child poverty, thanks to measures like the enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) program. In 2021, the child poverty rate dropped to 5.2% due to these programs. However, Congress allowed these measures to expire, leading to a child poverty rate of 12.4% in 2022, affecting approximately 9 million children. Poverty negatively impacts children's nutrition, health, education, and overall well-being. The author argues that reducing child poverty should be a high priority and that the U.S. has the means to achieve this goal. STORY 3: AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment The author shares a personal story of their family's journey to the United States from Cuba in 1980 during the Mariel Lift Boat event. They describe how they were initially scared of Americans but eventually realized they were in America when they arrived in Key West. The author has lived most of their life in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and became actively involved in community service, including joining the Medical Reserve Corps and assisting with COVID-19 responses. They also serve on the board of the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber and the Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett. In 2023, the author and their husband launched the Thumann Foundation to focus on children's healthcare, nutrition, safety, and education. They were selected to the Gwinnett Leadership program Class of 2024 and recently had a full circle moment when honoring President Jimmy Carter's legacy. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: Gwinnett County Waste – Peggy Slappy – Tom Wages Obits STORY 4: Jon Carr And now here's my conversation with Jon Carr from the Aurora Theater. ***Jon Carr Interview*** We'll be back in a moment. Break 3: Lawrenceville Harvest Fest – ESOG – Ingles 2 STORY 5: Gubernatorial candidates quarrel over glory for winning opioid settlements Opioid settlement funds, totaling over $50 billion, are becoming a political issue among gubernatorial candidates in several states. Candidates are vying for credit for these funds, even though the settlements resulted from a coalition of attorneys general and private lawyers. North Carolina's Attorney General Josh Stein, running for governor, lists securing opioid settlement funds as an accomplishment. However, mixing politics with these funds raises concerns about their effective allocation and potential misuse. Advocates argue that the focus should be on how the money can be used to save lives and address the public health crisis of opioid addiction, which claimed over 100,000 American lives last year. STORY 6: Buford Middle Competition Cheerleaders Repeat as State Champions Buford Middle School's competition cheerleading team secured their second consecutive state championship victory, competing against other Class AAAAAAA feeder middle schools. The Wolves scored 93.5 points, outperforming Lakeside-DeKalb, the runner-up, and North Paulding, who placed third. This win marks their third state championship in five years. The team consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students and is led by coach Caroline Parker. The achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of these young athletes, contributing to their school's proud cheerleading tradition. Coming up next. Leah McGrath from Ingles markets on net carbs. Break: JACKSON EMC – GCPS STORY 8: Leah McGrath Ingles Markets And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on net carbs. ***Leah McGrath Interview*** We'll have final thoughts after this. Michael is ticked off that Congressman Diana DeGette lied during an interview on KOA Radio this morning, falsely claming that gun violence is increasing the worst ever. It is not and FBI crime statistics prove that. In 2017 DeGette told a constituent to just call the Denver Police, they'd be there "in minutes" but you'd probably already be dead. And, she lies about the Aurora Theater shooting. Private background checks are one step toward gun registration and confiscation. And a caller complains that Michael talks about guns too much!
Over the past 20 years, the Aurora Theater has grown from a humble playhouse to an artistic and cultural staple of Metro Atlanta. Now in its 24th season, the Aurora Theater holds over 850 events and entertains 80,000 visitors every year, making it the fastest-growing professional theater in Georgia. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Co-Founders, Ann-Carol Pence and Anthony Rodriguez on the Aurora’s main stage, and find out what makes this theater so successful.

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Steffan Tubbs. Steffan is best known in Colorado as the co-host of Colorado’s Morning News on KOA NewsRadio in Denver. Overall, Steffan has more than 26 years of news experience and is a four-time winner of the Edward R. Murrow award for national reporting. In this interview, Jim, Jan and Steffan discuss whether some people are born to be leaders, and then assume leadership responsibilities; or some are thrown into circumstances where leadership is demanded and step up to the occasion. Also discussed is why some seek leadership positions with no motivation for personal gain. When Steffan covers people who complain and blame their circumstances, he challenges them that a single individual can still make a difference. Listen in to learn more about how passion for a cause can inspire others to achieve heroic aspirations.. Key Takeaways [3:39] Steffan first embedded in Iraq in March 2006, to report to his audience firsthand on conditions. He saw our men and women carrying out orders, and also going beyond to fulfil humanitarian missions. [6:16] At home, an email informed Steffan that a new friend had lost his life to an IED, in the same Humvee they had shared less than a month earlier. Steffan vowed that his mission would be to remember our troops — men and women — and their sacrifices. This has led to incredible experiences. [10:34] Filming ACRONYM, Steffan had many opportunities to talk and travel with WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan veterans, who spoke to him about wanting to protect our country, the Constitution, and our democracy, but suffered terribly doing so. This day, more than 20 veterans will take their lives, and 75 more will attempt it. Steffan spreads awareness of this tragedy. [12:39] Steffan’s life changed on April 19, 1995, when the AP ticker reported an explosion in Oklahoma City, at the Murrah Federal Building. Steffan arrived within six hours, and was on site for a week. That was his first tragedy coverage of many. In the aftermath of tragedy, he saw ordinary people become leaders, as they evacuated buildings and saved people’s lives. [17:53] Some people are born to be leaders, and find leadership positions. Some are thrown into circumstances where leadership is demanded, and step up to the occasion. Some seek leadership position with no motivation for personal gain. Some people do not seek to lead. [21:04] When Steffan covers people who complain and blame their circumstances, he challenges them. A person can still make a difference, living in this, the greatest country on earth. [22:51] WWII veteran Joe LaNier grew up in segregated rural Mississippi, grandson of a slave, and became a Navy Seabee. He always looked at life’s positives After interviewing with Steffan, he became the subject of Steffan’s first book and documentary film, Life, Liberty & Resilience. Taking on the dual project “just about killed” Steffan, but he and Joe had great experiences working together. [29:29] Steffan tells of his early life, and the resilience of his divorced mother, as she provided for him as well as she could. Steffan knows both poverty and comfort. He rejects keeping the hand you were dealt. He creates opportunities, makes things happen, and believes others can, too. Resiliency helps in any hard circumstance. Steffan is an eternal optimist, in part through the examples of people he meets. [34:00] You can learn optimism by paying attention around you. There’s always someone who is in a worse situation than you. If you see them coping, and being resilient, take a lesson from it. [37:40] Steffan tells why he likes to create documentary films. His company trademark is Documentary Films That MatterTM. Everybody has a story, and most people have a compelling story. Steffan’s curiosity drives him to discover, explore, and share these stories in documentary form. Books Mentioned in This Episode Life, Liberty & Resilience: A Man’s War on Three Fronts, by Steffan Tubbs Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities, by Paul G. Stoltz Bio Steffan has funneled his passion for fair, honest reporting into Mountain Time Media and making Documentary Films That Matter.™ His first 3 films, Life, Liberty & Resilience, Droughtland, and ACRONYM: The Cross-Generational Battle With PTSD, all have been critically acclaimed and created amazing engagement opportunities, including a private screening on Capitol Hill for the House Veteran Affairs Committee. In addition to his radio experience, Steffan has spent more than six years as a national correspondent with ABC News based in Los Angeles, and nearly two years as a reporter/anchor for Fox5/WNYW-TV in New York City before moving back to Denver in 2005. Steffan hosted Studio 12 on Colorado Public Television for eight years. He has covered the Oklahoma City bombing and subsequent trials, Columbine, 9/11 recovery from Ground Zero, the Virginia Tech and Aurora Theater shootings and every type of natural disaster – from fires to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, drought, and tornadoes. His sports coverage has included Super Bowls, World Series, NBA, and Stanley Cup Finals. Steffan is a frequent contributor to the Fox News Channel and ABC News. He is a proud supporter of our military and was twice embedded with U.S. troops in Iraq (2006 & 2010.) In both 2010 and 2012, he assisted WWII veterans back to the island of Iwo Jima. He ends his show daily by reminding us to Remember Our Troops. In 2012, Steffan published his first book Life, Liberty & Resilience – the story of a segregated WWII Iwo Jima veteran who grew up in rural Mississippi. His first film of the same title was released in 2013. In 2014, Steffan’s second film Droughtland was released to critical acclaim. This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1.
