Family From The Heart - An Encouraging And Entertaining Look At Family Life
In this episode, Stephanie and I discussed the following: How our Christmas went. Stephanie talked about making candy with Jacob as our yearly tradition. We spoke about having family over to do our annual ornament exchange. We mentioned we had our Christmas Eve meal at Waffle House. We saw the new Willy Wonka movie starring Timothée Chalamet. We shared our thoguhts on the movie. Our whole family watched Children of the Stones.

Join your overly-festive hosts as they discuss groovy tunes, 1960's dating advice filtered through a 1990's lens, and the creepy undercurrents of an ostensibly sweet episode. Also some Star Trek Christmas silliness since this episode was released on Christmas day. Spoiler warning! We dive right into a detail-rich discussion of this episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet – beware! [Review starts at 22:39] Tony and Laurie start with the news that all of the TOS and TNG movies have been removed from Paramount+, then round up the latest tweets from Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas and tell listeners how to enter a drawing to win the Picard season 2 Blu-ray or DVD set. They talk about William Shatner's new book and his estrangement from Leonard Nimoy, and check out reactions to last week's Lower Decks episodes from DS9 vets Nana Visitor, Armin Shimerman, and Cirroc Lofton (and clear up the mystery of Quark's teeth). They look ahead to Lower Decks‘ future and Mike McMahan's interest in working some of the Enterprise cast into the show. After that, they take on the hefty task of reviewing Lower Decks‘ wackadoo new episode “A Mathematically Perfect Redemption.” They wrap up with the Doctor Who movie that could've been directed by Leonard Nimoy and a way to celebrate Star Trek Christmas year-round.

Did you ever ask Santa for some Star Trek action figures? Did you wake up to find a model of the USS Enterprise under the Christmas tree one year? I bet you did! Go on a walk down memory lane with us as we take a look at all the toys of Star Trek Christmas past. :)
Sam and Matt debate Die Hard's place in the pantheon of Christmas films, discuss the most faithful adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol' and appreciate the criminally underrated Star Trek Christmas adventure. From Charles Dickens to Aliens, from George Bailey to Pete Davidson; join Sam and Matt as they discuss their favorite Christmas thangs' in their wonderfully magical final episode of the year. CORRECTION: The NPR show that Matt mentions is in fact not called Brain Talk; it is called Hidden Brain and it is great! The episode referred to is "Minimizing Pain, Maximizing Joy" where host Shankar Vedantam interviews philosopher William Irvine about his views on stoicism. Zac is an extractor at a major Oregon cannabis company. I'm your host Jay Rich and we've got another special episode for you today. Before I go any further, I want to thank Shawn Shumway for finishing our intro and ad music for this episode. I think it makes the episodes feel even that more legit. Once again I'm recording this intro on a Wednesday as I try to make sure to hit our upload deadline tonight. I'm now aware that podcasting can a kind of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants proposition, but I sure hope I can build a backlog this winter and get myself some breathing room. We've got some special episodes for you coming up for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm going to leave them mostly secret for now, but I just want to say thank you to a special Twitter friend, for making a Star Trek Christmas special a real possibility. I'll tease more information as we get closer to recording! Before we get into our interview, I don't care what side of the aisle you're on, but we all need to get out and vote! We're all Americans and we deserve to have our voices heard. If your side doesn't “win,” then maybe we should stop thinking of it as a competition, and start thinking of it as playing clean up. If you want America to survive, we need to “drain the swamp,” and root out corruption in our Government. According to the Washington Post, “the president, who is exempt from government conflict-of-interest laws, refused to follow the practice of his predecessors in severing ties to his existing businesses or putting his assets in a blind trust. He retained ownership, ostensibly putting his two adult sons in charge while still enjoying the benefits of any profit.” Their research even shows that he's spent one out of every three days on one of his properties, using nearly $1m in taxpayer dollars to do so, and that's just what they've admitted to. According to Representative David Cicilline, a Democrat out of Rhode Island and a member of House leadership who serves on the Judiciary Committee, “This president has a habit of doing things out in the open, which are completely improper or even illegal and somehow the average person thinks, ‘Well, if he's doing it out in the open it must be OK; I must not completely understand the rules.' But it's not.” As the Washington Post said, “Given Mr. Trump's example, it is also no surprise that his administration is stacked with business insiders and lobbyists who shape policy to benefit the industries they once worked for — and likely will return to after their stint in government." That certainly doesn't sound like rooting out corruption to me. It sounds like he'd rather fill the swamp to benefit himself. Promises made, promises kept? I think not.Alright, that's enough for now and I'm running low on time. Before we get into the sponsors, I wanted to thank Zac Mullins for stepping up and filling in for this week's podcast. I truly hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, we shared some good laughs and I'm looking forward to having him back on in the future. We touch a bit on a wide variety of topics including Ghosts, UFO's, Bigfoot, and even Serial Killer psychology, by way of the Last Podcast on the Left.
