POPULARITY
This week's episode presents a chance for Michael, Trekkie of the Couch, to show his quality. Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated 5-season series from Mike McMahan and heavily channels the vibe of McMahan's previous work on Rick and Morty, while also crafting a narrative about Star Trek's lesser known non-bridge crew that's funny, whimsical, and chock full of nerdy references for Trekkies far and wide. Alex and Marcus learn about the intricacies of Star Trek lore (and how crazy it really gets) and Michael and Iris call back to plenty of traditional Star Trek television of old during our discussions on favorite moments, favorite characters, and Michael's Star Trek-themed Trivia Corner. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
Produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions with Mike McMahan serving as showrunner, Star Trek: Lower Decks is the adult animated television series set in the 24th century Star Trek universe. Mike McMahan delivers us another signature TNG trope with "Upper Decks." Wrapped in an anthology episode, five vignettes follow the lives of select bridge crew members - Captain Freeman, Commander Ransom, Lieutenant Shax, Lieutenant Commander Billups, and Dr. T'Ana - through their day aboard the Cerritos. This quintet of tales incorporates even more tropes (an alien invasion, space cows, performance of a one-man show, a devolved crew member, witnessing a birthing ceremony, engineering disasters, Bajoran trauma, etc.)Star Trek: Age of Discovery is a fan podcast for the Star Trek Universe, including Classic Trek and the Paramount + shows STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS, STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, STAR TREK: PICARD, STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS, and Netflix's STAR TREK: PRODIGY.Subscribe to Star Trek: Age of Discovery on Apple Podcast by CLICKING HERE. We did it. We've completed our San Diego Comic-Con coverage. Twelve podcasts in August. Too much? Maybe, but no regrets, and there is no better way to wrap up our Comic-Con celebrations than with Star Trek group editor Heather Antos and superstar writer Ryan North discussing Star Trek: Lower Decks and its new mission at IDW Publishing. Since its streaming premiere, we've championed Star Trek: Lower Decks as the most human Trek. While it's wickedly funny, frequently teasing the ultra seriousness in which we hold the franchise, Lower Decks laughs with the characters and concepts, never at them. The show and its showrunner, Mike McMahan, have tremendous reverence for the Star Trekthat's come before, and his love for it shines through every frame. The upcoming fifth and final season, which begins on October 24th, has us feeling a little weepy. However, there's no reason to fret. IDW is relaunching the Star Trek: Lower Decks comic book series with a new number one on November 13th, and on October 22nd, there will also be a brand new graphic novel called Warp Your Own Way. Both are written by Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Fantastic Four), and IDW Star Trek group editor Heather Antos oversees it all. At San Diego Comic-Con, we sat down with North and Antos to discuss our mutual admiration for Star Trek: Lower Decks. We talk about its placement within the franchise, what they can do in the comics that McMahan and company cannot accomplish on television, and where this series may take the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Also, how does contributing to Star Trek affect their perspective as creators and, well, just as humans? Continue this conversation by following Heather Antos on Twitter, Instagram, and her Website, as well as Ryan North on Twitter, Instagram, and his website. Solar Opposites creatives Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel unleash all sorts of chaos including what they'd want for a live action crossover, a theme park ride, and some of the fun in store for season five. Filmed at San Diego Comic-Con, other roundtable participants are Brandon Zachary and David Thompson. More about Solar Opposites: “Solar Opposites” centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food and fun stuff. On season five, now that alien mission partners Terry and Korvo are married, the whole Solar Opposites team are focused on family values. Tony and Laurie start with a news round-up now that the strikes are over and everyone can talk Trek again: Strange New Worlds is gearing up for production again (and Jonathan Frakes will be doing some directing) as is the Section 31 movie event, guest star Elias Toufexis is excited about Discovery season 5, and Mike McMahan's talking about the next season of Lover Decks. There's also news about the missing 3-foot Enterprise model that used to sit on Gene Roddenberry's desk, which may have just resurfaced after 46 years. Today's big interview is with Star Trek: The Original Series‘ Walter Koenig, who talks about life on the set back in the 1960s, the emotional Chekov scene he filmed but never saw in Generations, his take on people who say William Shatner overacts, and his uncomfortable moment on the set of The Wrath of Khan. They wrap up with a quick plug for each other's recent appearances on other podcasts—The 7th Rule‘s news show and Trek, Marry, Kill.
