This week Sidey, Dan, and Cris fly solo — Simon's been called to Southampton on urgent business (he was spotted in a pub surrounded by tea cups, so make of that what you will). The dads are reviewing Ballad of a Small Player (2024), the new Netflix film from Edward Berger — the director behind All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave — starring a very much on-form Colin Farrell. The Film: Colin Farrell plays Lord Doyle, a dissolute British gambler drowning in debt in the casinos of Macau — and if you thought Vegas was the gambling capital of the world, think again. Doyle owes 352,000 Hong Kong dollars to the house, is blagging his way past the front desk in a crumpled cravat, and somehow still looks magnificent. He falls in with a mysterious young woman at the Baccarat tables, and from there the film slides into gorgeous, ambiguous territory — is she real? Is any of this? And does it even matter when the rush of the bet is the only thing that feels true? Themes of addiction, redemption, obsession, and the question of whether you can ever really stop — all wrapped in the stylised, sun-drenched visual language of Macau's casino underworld. The lads give it two words each: "All in" (Dan), "Bizarre but funny" (Cris), and "Strong recommend" (Sidey). Consensus: go watch it. Top Five: Gardens The boys dig into their favourite cinematic, televisual, musical, and gaming gardens. From the gnome in Amélie and David Lynch's suburban lawn horror in Blue Velvet, to the brutal communal fields of Midsommar, Spirited Away's otherworldly beauty, and the garden in Saltburn that had certain members of the pod seeing quite a lot of a particular actor. Wonka's chocolate garden gets a nod, as does Miss Peregrine's hedge-portal to another time. Sidey & Reegs are also going to see Wu-Tang Clan at the O2. Angela's hearty dish makes quite the impression! Tom Davis is an actor, comedian, podcaster, writer and proud south Londoner. Fresh from delivering the goody bag for Romesh Ranganathan, he settles in with us for a proper catch-up over a delicious pie.  Tom's latest tour, Spudgun, sees him return to the comedy circuit after a period away from the stage. You'll have seen and heard from him plenty in that time, though, with acting credits including Wonka and A Thousand Blows plus TV appearances on shows including A League Of Their Own and, of course, his weekly podcast with Romesh, Wolf & Owl.  Tom famously started out in comedy when he was working on building sites, but less is known about his time in the restaurant industry. He chats to us about his work in the kitchen, including a spell at The Connaught, which sadly didn't overlap with Angela's time there. The chat begins over sliced bread and a glass of Botivo with elderflower cordial and soda, before we hit the pie. Angela serves a steak pie, using a recipe by Diana Henry, with a gluten free version for Nick, all accompanied by a side of Savoy cabbage. The Waitrose wine experts have paired this meal with a glass of Norton Winemaker's Reserve Malbec.  Tom knows his food and possesses some excellent eating credentials, none more so than his completion of The Big Five eating challenge, as well as his unwavering passion for bread and potatoes. We also hear the loveliest story about Olivia Colman, which is always an excellent way to spend your time. Now, pass the Croydon croutons! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and on Spotify.  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes The recipe for steak pie was created for Waitrose by Diana Henry.  A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish If you want to get in touch with us about anything at all, contact dish@waitrose.co.uk Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions Learn more about your ad choices. Jim's prepping his first con table the intentional way, building a collage of roles across Star Trek Continues, Mayfair Witches, Disney's Secrets of Sulphur Springs, and a long-running audio drama, then pairing it with a simple goal: make every visitor feel like the moment matters. With a rare reunion of three of the original Wonka kids and a custom set build, the event taps pure nostalgia while opening space for real conversations with fans.Voiced by Brian Plaideau Have you been injured? Movie of the Year: 1971Action Figure Draft, Part 2The Chaos Continues in the Action Figure Draft 1971In this week's Movie of the Year, Ryan, Greg, Mike, and Taylor conclude the most brutal, strategic, and downright unhinged draft of the season: the Action Figure Draft 1971.Every Taste Bud continues to choose characters from 1971 movies (or TV productions), imagining them as highly posable, battle-ready action figures. These figures must then be assigned to six RPG-inspired roles: bard, cleric, druid, fighter, wizard, and wild card. The goal?Build a team capable of winning an all-out fight against the other rosters. And the twist that changes everything:Once a character is drafted from a movie, no one else can draft anyone else from that same movie. No backups. No consolation picks. Once it's gone, it's GONE.If you thought last season's drafts were chaotic…you ain't heard 1971.The Draft Rules: One Year, One Movie Per Pick, Zero MercyTo keep this battle as ruthless as possible, the Taste Buds lock in the following rules:Snake Draft FormatThe order reverses each round, forcing careful planning and last-second gambits.Draft RolesEach team must fill:Bard – charm, chaos, charismaCleric – healer, protector, mystical weirdoDruid – nature, magic, unpredictable energyFighter – the bruiser, tank, or martial artistWizard – supernatural, cerebral, or ranged powerhouseWild Card – whatever you dare unleashEligibility: 1971 Movies (and TV Productions) [and Musicians probably] OnlyIf it hit screens in 1971 (big screen, small screen, arthouse, grindhouse), it's fair game. The Killer Rule: One Character Per MovieAs soon as a player drafts any character from a movie or TV title, that entire production is locked out forever.Pick a character from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? With each category requiring a different kind of fighter, strategy becomes key:A bard might be a charming con artist, a manipulative cult leader, or someone who just screams enough to cause psychic damage.A cleric might heal, preach, or haunt.A druid might commune with nature or be a chaos gremlin.A fighter is your tank — your blunt instrument of violence.A wizard could be supernatural…or simply smarter and more dangerous than anyone else.And...

For Food & Family Month, the So Many Sequels crew unwraps one of the strangest and most iconic family films of all time, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). Gene Wilder delivers one of cinema's most unpredictable performances, and we break down why his version of Wonka is still the gold standard of chaotic candy moguls. From unsettling tunnel boat rides to bratty children meeting VERY questionable fates, we revisit the film's dark humor, musical numbers, and the surprisingly emotional heart at its center. The guys share their childhood memories of the movie, debate Wilder vs. Depp vs. Chalamet, and explore how the film became both a cult classic and a meme factory. It's nostalgic, bizarre, deliciously weird, and the perfect pick for Food & Family Month.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to Donavan Freberg, son of the genius humorist, comedian, advertising executive and writer Stan Freberg. Donavan was a guest we had tried to get on the podcast for quite some time and thankfully he finally agreed to be in the hot seat and we can't thank him enough. Our conversation with Donavan was frank and not always easy but at other times wonderful and whimsical. You'll see what we mean after you take a listen. Our chat with Donavan often started with the almost Wonka-like existence of growing up with a dad who had a fondness for Christmas, often took his son out on adventures late at night and sometimes not requiring him to go to school was part of his daily existence. It was more like a movie or an adventure that most of us ever get to experience in our own childhood When you mom breaks you out of school, you know you are living in rarified heir. We get into that hilarious story and a lot more on this episode. We learn from Donavan that his father was a genius ad man who created some of the funniest, most memorable commercials of the 60s and 70s which garnered him 21 Clio awards, the ad biz's equivalent of the Academy Awards for commercials. We also talk about our Frank Sinatra connection that likely brought us to this interview in some ways. We also learn from Donavan that a very, very rough change took place in his father's life after his mother passed away which is both heartbreaking and remarkable at the same time. Heartbreaking for the loss Donavan felt with his father and remarkable that he still has such affinity for his dad. This episode is all about duality. Take a listen. Everyone has a story.

In Episode #245 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar is joined by Neil Hannon — the brilliant mind behind The Divine Comedy — for a revealing conversation about his stunning new album, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, out this September on Divine Comedy Records. His 13th studio album and perhaps his finest to date, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, was recorded at Abbey Road and finds Hannon blending lush orchestral arrangements with sharp lyrical insight. Written as a response to personal reflection and global unrest, the record explores themes of memory, mortality, and melancholy — all delivered with his trademark wit and elegance. The Divine Comedy's 13th album, balancing grief and absurdity, and why songwriting still feels like emotional alchemy. The album's lead single Achilles, inspired by a 1915 WWI poem, is a moving meditation on bravery and loss. Elsewhere, Hannon reflects on writing songs for the hit film Wonka and revisiting his past through the remastered Divine Comedy back catalogue. In this episode, Neil discusses the emotional and philosophical ideas behind the new record, the creative freedom of writing for film, and why music — now more than ever — needs both sadness and silliness. He also teases the upcoming UK tour and shares reflections on a career spent crafting one of Britain's most unique and literate songbooks. Whether you've followed The Divine Comedy since Casanova, or are discovering Neil's genius for the first time, this is a rich, witty, and deeply human episode not to be missed. There's a new album, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, and a tour in October and all bases are covered in this conversation from Kildare, these among them … … seeing U2 at Croke Park “and feeling as though I'd won the Wonka Golden Ticket”. … favourite bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s - Pixies, Sugarcubes, Sonic Youth and Ride.… the miserably cancelled Father Ted musical and how he's recycled the songs he wrote for it. … a research trip to an Indie Disco with Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. … how it feels to record at Abbey Road. … his teenage band inventing new words to R.E.M songs in an Enniskillen youth club. … how new songs begin. … supporting Carter USM and Suede, “the moment I first felt like a pop star”. … Mar-A-Lago, a childhood trip to London and further melancholia on his new album Rainy Sunday Afternoon.… rocks on the street in Derry en route to Primary School during the Troubles. … Hepworth and Ellen appearing on a Duckworth Lewis album - “nudging and nurdling!” … his first stab at “witty pseudo-intellectual lyrics”. … “never leave your tour bus, be rehearsed before you start rehearsals” and other ways touring saves money. … and the five songs he always plays.Divine Comedy tickets here: https://thedivinecomedy.com/livePre-order Rainy Sunday here: https://lnk.to/RainySundayFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Hosted on Acast.
