Happy Tuesday, everyone! If you are a fan of Marvel, or Star Trek, or just good Sci-Fi, then you are going to love this week's guest— I'm talking with my new friend Terry Matalas! Terry broke out when he created the TV adaptation of 12 Monkeys. He has gone on to write and direct the last two seasons of Star Trek: Picard, he did a season of MacGyver, and he's currently finishing Vision Quest and an animated adaptation of Magic: The Gathering. Terry has his hands in so many amazing projects and I love to see it because he is truly the nicest, most appreciative guy. Be sure to stick around for the Hindsight this week, where my producer Jeph and I talk about some upcoming appearances and get into some fan questions from the Mail Sack! Grabs your fancy drinks, we're hitting the slopes and tropical beaches with Lower Decks this week. We'll be reviewing season 5, episode 3, "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel". Also, Netflix makes a big mistake with Star Trek Prodigy. LeVar Burton isn't holding back as he talks about Star Trek Legacy. And Denise Crosby shares what she and Star Trek Picard showrunner Terry Matalas had planned. All that and more on Trekcast. Episode summary:The crew are deployed to remove a nanite swarm in a space hotel, but Mariner is dismayed when the mission is joined by Jennifer Sh'reyan, an ex-girlfriend who Mariner ghosted. Jennifer acts as if they are still dating, and the others encourage Mariner to have a mature conversation and end things. Mariner avoids the confrontation, but her awkward, passive-aggressive behavior lets the nanites get out of control. Jennifer reveals she was just trying to force Mariner to talk about their breakup, and the two apologize. Rutherford finds a way to disable the nanites, discovering that they were controlled by a microscopic Starfleet ship from a parallel universe. Meanwhile, Boimler goes on a mission with Commander Ransom to locate AWOL Starfleet admiral Milius. Boimler suspects Ransom is treating him as cannon fodder, and briefly sides with Milius, who says he left Starfleet out of resentment at being assigned low-prestige missions. Ransom admits that he brought Boimler because he is always prepared and wanted to give him opportunities to showcase his bravery; Boimler subdues Milius, securing the mission. Milius is reassigned to help the microscopic ship return to its universe. This Journey's End tried to be an emotional Crusher, but it just ended up being a Disaster. They really needed to Troi (Pic)harder. The Emergence of this episode, devoid of Inner Light, will get no Redemption. A very Dark Page in Enterprise history. There will be no Justice for this Too Short a Season, though it should be A Matter of Honor. This is The Price we pay when Yesterday's Enterprise isn't given its Devil's Due. This Final Mission is corrupted by a Future Imperfect, leaving an Identity Crisis and a tarnished Legacy, from which Terry Matalas will learn all the wrong Lessons. The crew of the NX-01, at least The Survivors, In Theory, should be the subject of Hero Worship, not just Relics, A Matter of Time until they become The Outcast. Time for The Big Goodbye. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. The untitled Vision series that was formerly known as VisionQuest, got a significant update this week with James Spader announced to be returning as Ultron. Little else is still known about the series, beyond the fact that it is the second of two WandaVision spinoffs on the way and that Star Trek Picard's Terry Matalas joined the series as showrunner earlier this year. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the upcoming animated feature film, has been a longstanding and recurring inhabitant of our news docket and conversations, but we were finally treated to our first significant look via the official trailer released by Warner Bros last week. In addition to having the animation showcased, we got our first inklings of the story and characters, with a botched marriage proposal serving as the backdrop for the conflict. Whether you're for, against, or undecided when it comes to Robert Downey, Jr's casting as Doctor Doom for the MCU, there's no denying that the move has catapulted the cinematic universe back to the pinnacle of the zeitgeist and surrounding conversation. The actor had been quiet save for the four words he uttered at San Diego Comic Con, “New mask, same task;” until last Tuesday's episode of the Award Chatter podcast from The Hollywood Reporter, where he shared insights into Bob Iger and Kevin Fiege's direct involvement into the decision, with the latter expressing a desire to, quote, “Get Victor Von Doom right.” Elsewhere, this week's episode of The Official Marvel Podcast shared a slew of comments from cast members of the MCU's other upcoming films, including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Ted Lasso, Apple TV +'s celebrated sports comedy, has made major moves toward finally kicking off a long awaited fourth season we learned via a Deadline exclusive. The shows original three season run, which concluded more than a year ago and garnered 13 Emmy wins, left the door open for the future, but that was left largely in the hands of star Jason Sudeikis, who originated the character on Saturday Night Live shorts. Now, Warner Bros Television, the studio for the series, has picked up options for three original cast members, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift, with more expected to be announced soon. RUMOR: Scooper Daniel Richtman is claiming that a fourth Spider-Man film will indeed feature a multiversal story and should start filming next year. A24 has released the first trailer for disaster comedy film Y2K which stars Rachel Zegler. Saturday Night Live standout Kyle Mooney will direct and it hits theaters Dec. 6. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is attached to star in Loose Cannons, an action comedy that is in the process of being set up at Lionsgate. Chad Stahelski, the John Wick filmmaker who has a first-look deal with Lionsgate, is producing. Anya Taylor-Joy will star in an 8 episode series adaptation of Bella Mackie's bestselling novel “How to Kill Your Family” for Netflix. Chick-Fil-A is aggressively entering the entertainment industry, planning to launch original content on its streaming platform. According to Deadline, the fast-food chain is collaborating with major production companies, focusing on family-friendly, unscripted shows, and is also negotiating content licensing and acquisitions. Ryan Reynolds has shared a deleted scene on social media from Deadpool and Wolverine. The scene confirms that Channing Tatum‘s Gambit not only survived the battle in the Void but also has a way out of the wasteland as an interdimensional portal can be seen opening up in the reflection of Gambit's eyes. In an interview with Variety, Tatum admitted that he still wants to make a standalone Gambit movie, adding: “I've been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It's in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige's hands. I pray to God.”

Pix-ar It Didn't Happen Inside Out 2's $155 million debut this Father's Day weekend handedly surpassed projections and injected some much-needed adrenaline into the summer box office. The animated sequel's impressive opening haul was enough to supplant Dune: Part 2 as 2024's highest opening, as well as earning a spot as the second highest domestic opening for an animated film, behind 2018's Incredibles 2, another sequel to a beloved Pixar original. Don't Rock The Steamboat According to a Variety exclusive, Dwayne Johnson's Seven Buck Productions has signed a multi-year, first look deal with The Walt Disney Company to develop theatrical and streaming films. We finally received an update on the second of the two WandaVision spinoffs in development, with the news that Marvel has enlisted Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas as showrunner for the untitled Vision series. Details remain sparse, but we know that Paul Bettany will reprise his role as the albino synthezoid and Marvel Studios is eyeing a 2026 Disney+ release. The 2024 summer movie season continues to struggle as newcomers Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie, essentially tied for the number one spot for the holiday weekend, each debuting at a muted $31 million; the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office in almost 30 years. Furiosa particularly came in lower than estimates as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and receiving the same B+ Cinemascore. Advance tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine became available last Monday, resulting in an estimated 200,000 tickets sold for roughly $9 million and enough to break the record for first-day, R-rated ticket sales. Subsequently, at still two months out, it leads 2024 in all presales with all signs pointing to it being the year's first $100 million plus opening weekend.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard, director of the last two MonsterVerse films, will not return for the third installment due to timing issues. The split is amicable, with a future return possible. Netflix revealed a first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Hemsworth replaces Henry Cavill for the final two seasons, with season 4's release date currently to be determined. Glen Powell revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he recently turned down major roles, including the upcoming Jurassic World film and a reboot of The Bourne Identity. Damon Lindelof, one of the co-creators of Lost and The Watchmen is officially behind the creative team for the upcoming Green Lantern series for DC Studios. Chris Mundy, the showrunner behind Netflix's crime series Ozark, as well as long-time DC comic author Tom King round out the creative team. Netflix released the first trailer for Beverly Hills: Axel F, featuring Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley. The new film, following the original 1984 release and its sequels, will stream starting July 3. [Lower Decks review starts at  26:53] Anthony and Laurie start with the great news that the WGA strike is over. Although the SAG-AFTRA strike continues, there can still be work done on Star Trek, so the podcasters break down what this could mean for each show, or even the next movie, which has bubbled to the surface once again as “still on the tracks.” They give an update about the swapped-out visual FX shot on the Star Trek: Picard DVD sets, then segue into their recent interview with Picard production designer Dave Blass, who has strong opinions about the urgency of booking Terry Matalas to develop a new Trek show with the Picard cast. They wrap up the news with a reminder about the new Prodigy DVD set. It’s then time to do the reviews, starting with the latest very Short Treks episode (“It’s Holograms All The Way Down”) written by Prodigy co-EP Aaron Waltke. Both Tony and Laurie loved this one and hope fans give it a watch for all the layers of lore and cameos Aaron crammed into 90 seconds. After that, it’s time for their review of the newest episode of Lower Decks, “Empathalogical Fallacies.” And once again the All Access team loved the episode, especially giving T’Lyn her own storyline with high praise of the guest stars and how jammed-packed the episode is with little moments, fun nods, and heart. They wrap up with a recommendation for a fun Lower Decks artist as a Twitter follow and an early TV appearance by a then-unknown Brent Spiner.
