The Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, Craig Hammill) discuss Martin Scorsese's controversial yet ultimately spiritually devout 1988 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. The team looks at cinema that takes on the transcendent and spiritual, whether from a position of faith, doubt, or atheism.  Movies as varied as James Gunn's SUPER, the Coen Brothers' A SERIOUS MAN, and Stephen Cone's PRINCESS CYD get name checked. The team debates why, like political movies, it's so hard to make a good spiritual movie.

Hey Gang!!! Today's episode is chock full of great recommendations for your queue and a Tasty-Treat-Sensation for the queue of your taste buds! First off, I tell you about one of my favorite comedy sitcoms of all time: SCHITT'S CREEK (NETFLIX) which is co-created and staring Father and Son duo Eugene and Dan Levy! It is the perfect combination of ridiculous and heart warming! Secondly, I recommend a lovely coming of age story with a LGBT theme, Stephen Cone's, PRINCESS CYD (NETFLIX) And lastly (But how can a dessert item ever really come last?) Archer Farm's incredibly delicious MONSTER TRAIL MIX!! Tanget Recommendations: The Wise Kids (HULU) An incredible Independent film written directed and staring Stephen Cone. An accurate look evangelical life in Amercian and how gay people are forced to secretly blend into it or reject it. Henry Gamble's Birthday Part: An interesting independent film about a coming of age story about a young man who is discovering his sexuality as his family is all going through their own growing pains. Also written and directed by Stephen Cone. Waiting for Guffman. A hilarious film about a small town putting on a play, and expecting a major critic coming to write it up for a national newspaper. It is one of my favorite Christopher Guest films, it is not currently on any streaming service :( But you can rent or buy it on Amazon. Best in Show. If you haven't seen this go buy/rent it. One of the best known Christopher Guest films, cowritten by Eugene Levy. It is an hilarious mockumentary about several couples as they get their dogs ready for national dog show. Not on any streaming service :( But you can rent or buy it on Amazon.

Jonathan Demme began his film career 50 years ago while working for Joseph Levine's production company in 1967, carving a path that resembled no other director in American film. His narrative films ranged from the grindhouse to Oscar prestige pictures to indies and more. Beyond fiction, he made documentaries about musicians and politics, music videos for the coolest bands, and a number of television episodes that gave life to the so-called writer's medium. While the word humanist gets thrown around carelessly, Demme deserved that term for the worlds his films enveloped and the generosity he showed each and every character while often creating an implied utopian vision of diversity. This special episode mourns the death of one of the great directors, as Peter invites on Jake Mulligan and Willow Maclay to discuss the multifaceted career of a director destined to cement a place in the canon. Plus, we revisit that oft-discussed director with three Double Exposure discussions with former guests. 0:00-4:12 Opening 4:12-43:27 Discussion with Jake Mulligan and Willow Maclay 44:34-47:26 Sponsorship Section 48:41-1:04:20 Beloved with Stephen Cone 1:05:21-1:28:18 The Truth About Charlie with Keith Uhlich 1:29:27-1:52:13 Stop Making Sense with Tim Grierson 1:52:40-1:22:02 Close

"I grew up a queer son of a Southern Baptist minister in South Carolina, and that’s where a lot of this comes from." That's writer/director/actor Stephen Cone telling the New York Times where he drew inspiration for his latest film, a current festival favorite, Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party. His other films include the provocative and enigmatic Black Box and his most widely seen film to date, The Wise Kids. All deal to some extent with issues of spirituality and sexual identity. And all are, to the filmmaker's great surprise, Coming Of Age stories, a genre Cone was never consciously drawn to. He talks to us about his own coming of age, about the challenges of being an independent filmmaker today, and about the potential downside of indie legitimacy. Also on the podcast, with the recent spate of celebrity deaths, mortality is in! So the Hog Butcher Radio Players perform Funeral. And we close with a song by the remarkable Robin Bienemann off of his record Songs About Work.

There are no curtains in the films of Stephen Cone. Well, there are literal curtains, but Cone never attempts to hide the surfaces of his characters, or really paint into anything than what they truly are. The Chicago based filmmaker sits down with Peter on the eve of the local premiere of his award-winning new film, Henry Gamble's Birthday Party. Stephen traces his cinephilia from Kentucky to New York to Chicago, discusses his respects for the craft of criticism, and explains his approach to collaborative sets and trust in making films like The Wise Kids and Black Box. Finally, the two dive into the show's third Jonathan Demme film, his adaptation of Toni Morrison's post-modernist novel Beloved. Declared a vanity project when initially released, the two explore the relationship between Demme and his actors, crafting an unflinching, truly humanist portrait of the American South by embracing subjectivity in the post-slavery era. 0:00-3:13 Opening4:34-8:23 Establishing Shots - Excerpts from Remembering Chantal Akerman9:09-56:36 Deep Focus - Stephen Cone57:02-59:34 Mubi Sponsorship1:00:50-1:18:45 Double Exposure - Beloved (Jonathan Demme)1:18:50-1:20:27 Close
