The Secret Movie Club team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, Craig Hammill) discuss Martin Scorsese's controversial yet ultimately spiritually devout 1988 THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. The team looks at cinema that takes on the transcendent and spiritual, whether from a position of faith, doubt, or atheism.  Movies as varied as James Gunn's SUPER, the Coen Brothers' A SERIOUS MAN, and Stephen Cone's PRINCESS CYD get name checked. The team debates why, like political movies, it's so hard to make a good spiritual movie.

This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt discuss three, count ‘em three movies! First up, it's Bo Burnham's debut as writer/director of ‘Eighth Grade'. The slice of life crowd pleaser from this year's Sundance finally hits the local cinema. Is it as endearing and wonderful as the critics say? Or should Chris just rewatch ‘Princess Cyd' or ‘Lady Bird'? Matt reviews ‘Teen Titans Go To The Movies', the big screen version of the popular cartoon show. But who saw a better family-friendly film? Because Chris saw Disney's ‘Christopher Robin', the premiere of a live-action (sort of) Winnie the Pooh, along with his friends from the 100 Acre Wood. There's the always reliable rundown of the big releases on Blu-Ray & DVD, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. Then the show wraps with the return of ‘The Lounge' where your intrepid hosts tackle all the latest news; Ruby Rose as Batwoman and her quitting of Twitter, Idris Elba being looked at for Bond, and the Oscars' Popular Film category. Hey Gang!!! Today's episode is chock full of great recommendations for your queue and a Tasty-Treat-Sensation for the queue of your taste buds! First off, I tell you about one of my favorite comedy sitcoms of all time: SCHITT'S CREEK (NETFLIX) which is co-created and staring Father and Son duo Eugene and Dan Levy! It is the perfect combination of ridiculous and heart warming! Secondly, I recommend a lovely coming of age story with a LGBT theme, Stephen Cone's, PRINCESS CYD (NETFLIX) And lastly (But how can a dessert item ever really come last?) Archer Farm's incredibly delicious MONSTER TRAIL MIX!! Tanget Recommendations: The Wise Kids (HULU) An incredible Independent film written directed and staring Stephen Cone. An accurate look evangelical life in Amercian and how gay people are forced to secretly blend into it or reject it. Henry Gamble's Birthday Part: An interesting independent film about a coming of age story about a young man who is discovering his sexuality as his family is all going through their own growing pains. Also written and directed by Stephen Cone. Waiting for Guffman. A hilarious film about a small town putting on a play, and expecting a major critic coming to write it up for a national newspaper. It is one of my favorite Christopher Guest films, it is not currently on any streaming service :( But you can rent or buy it on Amazon. Best in Show. If you haven't seen this go buy/rent it. One of the best known Christopher Guest films, cowritten by Eugene Levy. It is an hilarious mockumentary about several couples as they get their dogs ready for national dog show. Not on any streaming service :( But you can rent or buy it on Amazon.
