On episode 281 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Josh Parham to review Death of a Unicorn from A24, as well as talk about their favorite comedies of the 2020s as well as their favorite comedies of the last 25 years, the first quarter of the century.  Before getting into their thoughts on the latest release, Ryan and Josh discuss the big trailer that dropped last week for Paul Thomas Anderson's film One Battle After Another, starting Leonardo DiCaprio. In the first glimpse of the biggest film of the director's career, there was plenty to love as well as be cautious about in anticipation of the film's release this coming September. After their brief thoughts on the trailer, they transition to Death of a Unicorn, which premiered earlier in the month at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival. Ryan, who reviewed the film at the festival, was mixed on it, and Josh joined him for a mixed reaction of a fascinating concept that never amounted to much in the final product. A disappointing comedy featuring a mostly wasted all-star cast.  The conversation moves to talking about their favorite comedies of the 2020s so far, as the website and podcast will start to look at the best films of the decade so far. Films like Hundreds of Beavers, Bottoms, Anora, Benedetta, Barbie, Anora, and more. After discussing those films, they opened up the conversation to the best comedies of the last 25 years, as the team will also be taking a look at the best films of first quarter of the century. Films included in the conversation was Anchorman, A Serious Man, MacGruber, Bridesmaids, Spy, Mean Girls, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Walk Hard, Superbad, Hot Fuzz, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and plenty ore.   You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h39m. We will be back in next week for a Oscar retrospective over the 88th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2015. Till then, let's get into it.  Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

In episode two of our Visionary Remakes season, we survey the recent Coen brothers remake of True Grit (2010) and compare it to the original film, a John Wayne vehicle from 1969.Special Guest: Brian Eggert is the owner and film critic of Deep Focus Review, where he has written movie reviews, in-depth essays, and critical analyses since 2007. Brian also regularly appears on KARE 11, the NBC affiliate for the Twin Cities, to review and discuss movies. He belongs to the Society For Cinema and Media Studies, Minnesota Film Critics Alliance, Online Film & Television Association, International Film Society Critics, Independent Film Critics of America, The Critics Circle, and National Coalition of Independent Scholars.Westerns have gone through many cycles since the beginning of filmmaking. Right now, we are seeing an uptick in interest as the tv show Yellowstone dominates the traditional tv market. But back in 2010, Westerns were definitely far off in the background as comic book movies had begun to take over the box office. In 2010, the Coen brothers were coming off a very successful adaption of No Country for Old Men (2007) as well as two more left of center films, the sprightly spy romp Burn After Reading from 2008 and the niche existentialist A Serious Man from 2009. It is unclear why they decided to remake True Grit and focus on the novel from 1968 instead of the John Wayne movie which came a year later in 1969, but the choice was very successful. True Grit (2010) became the 2nd biggest Western in the modern box office. The 2010 True Grit showcases the refined talents of the Coens alongside the gorgeous cinematography of Roger Deakins, the layered and rich music from Carter Burwell, and a smashing breakout debut performance from Hailee Steinfeld as the lead Mattie Ross. The 1969 version of True Grit offers so much less. Despite John Wayne winning an Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, the original film seems totally out of step and out of time. In hindsight, it was an end-of-the-line production for the core creatives involved. The director, writer, and star actor were all at the end of their careers. Indeed this very type of Western was on its last leg as evidenced by the giant leap the genre made at the same time this film was being produced and released. Watch any of the bigger westerns from the late 1960s and then try to sit through True Grit (1969). The dislocation and disorientation is severe. The original True Grit was a swan song that came about a decade too late.

Along the way, we discuss the book's many meanings, its ancient context, and how this most unorthodox story may have entered the Biblical canon.

A Serious Man (2009) may seem much different from the Coens' adaptation of No Country for Old Men, which they released two years earlier. But they both concern a likable man who finds himself posing questions that the universe–or any of its weisest men–cannot answer. And even if there are glimpses of answers to the question “What does Hashem, or God, want,” neither late-thirties Larry or late-sixties Sheriff Bell can read the writing on the wall (or, in the case of A Serious Man, the writing on the teeth). The film begins with a quotation from Rumi, “Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you.” Join us for a conversation about one of the Coens' best films and a terrific look at people to whom things happen and are forced to receive the will of a God who never tips His hand about His intentions. This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Saturday Night, Challengers, Wicked, Blade, Blade II, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, V/H/S/94, So I Married An Axe Murderer, A Serious Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Reality Show Show, 8 Mile, The Lonely Guy, Review, Police Academy, The Muppet Babies, Set It Up, and Looney Tunes among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues... with what? We don't actually know yet. So keep it locked here to find out. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Joel & Ethan Coen's ultra-Jewish film was a project that was very personal to them. Their '60s-set A Serious Man takes a humorous look at the trials of Job in the form of Michael Stuhlbarg, an actor who's done many great things in the past 15 years, but this was his breakout. Stuhlbarg looks for meaning in this often-funny, but often-impenetrable and even stressful movie. While this isn't a classic the way many other Coen Brothers films are, it's as well-made and fascinating as just about anything else they've ever made. We just...might not get it? So let our 601st dose of Have You Ever Seen settle into your ears as we try to figure out what the boys are doing in A Serious Man. The Coen Brothers are incredible filmmakers. They are known for their screenwriting and direction. From wacky comedies to serious dramas, they always go for the heart and it gets us to wonder about life and the meaning of it. "A Serious Man" is a 2009 comedy drama that's dark about Larry who is about to get divorced and doesn't know why but we see why. But not only that, he has other struggles that really break this man down but not completely because of his faith in Judasim. The only thing that he ponders about is the meaning of life and bad things happen to him. It spirals to an existential journey in a small Minnesota town. I dig this film in how the cinematography amps up the struggles that these characters go through and as well as the screenwriting. The dialog is superb and pushes the story forward. We are meant to see this man and yell at him on the screen because the answers to his problems are sort of in front of him and he eventually figures it out. Not a film for a peson for action but if you're in some type of crisis, this one is for you. The characters are great and written very well and they bounce off each other and they sure deserve it.Four out of four tokes#coenbrothers #aseriousman

The year is 2009 and the movies are period pieces. First up it's '3 Idiots,' and the period examined is just a few years ago, when stars R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi go to college and there meet Aamir Khan, a charismatic Mary Poppins type. Rajkumar's Hirani's film was a giant success in India, and we discuss some of its crossover appeal in light of other Bollywood (and Tollywood) imports. Then we move on to 'Me and Orson Welles,' Richard Linklater's look at the Mercury Theater in New York City in the 1930s. Zac Efron takes on Christian McKay's Welles in the battle for charismatic supremacy and the company of Claire Danes. Hosted by Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler  Other movies discussed in this episode: Revanche (2008), Adventureland (2009), An Education (2009), A Serious Man (2009), Avatar (2009), Away We Go (2009), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), The Hurt Locker (2009), I Love You Man (2009), The Informant! Character actor extraordinaire, Richard Kind, talks about having the authenticity and self confidence to speak his mind and get away with it. He says having a healthy ego and approaching the world with joy give him permission to say just about anything. And how that confidence goes into his landing acting jobs and parenting his children. We also talk about the loss of Matthew Perry and the horror of eating dinner by yourself. [School of Movies 2023] The final main feed instalment of our Coen Brothers series goes out with a double-bang of exceptionally gripping Westerns. No Country for Old Men (2007, written by the recently departed Cormac McCarthy) is a tense game of cat and mouse. Josh Brolin discovers a drug deal gone very wrong and walks off with the money, and Javier Bardem plays the dead-eyed Terminator slowly but surely closing in on him. This whole case is followed by Sheriff Tommy Lee Jones who is scratching at his head to fathom the trail of violence he is witnessing. And in True Grit (2010) the second adaptation of the 1968 Charles Portis novel, a brand new Hailee Steinfeld, aged 13 commands a grizzled old frump of a bounty hunter played by Jeff Bridges to help her track down her father's killer and see justice done. It somehow manages to surpass the classic John Wayne version in every way. And both of these were influences on my own writing. If you want to hear what we have to say on the remaining Coen Brothers films you can catch our Patreon-excusive After School Club shows on The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, Burn after Reading, A Serious Man, Hail Caesar, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and The Tragedy of Macbeth.
