---------------------- Acesse nosso site: http://www.filmesclassicos.com.br Acesse nossa página no Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/podcastfilmesclassicos/

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This month is Masterclass Month at Catching Up On Cinema! September 2024 marks our 6th anniversary of podcasting, and to commemorate the occasion, we take a month to do a deep dive on a popular, long-lived movie franchise. For this year's Masterclass, we'll be reviewing the Hannibal Lecter series of films! Created by author Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter is a charismatic serial killer that, across multiple novels, films, and most recently, TV series, has consistently captivated global audiences since his inception in 1981. This week, our Masterclass continues with a review of Jonathan Demme's, The Silence of the Lambs (1991)! An adaptation of the second of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter series of novels, Jonathan Demme's, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is a critically acclaimed horror-thriller, and widely regarded as the best of the Lecter films. Massively influential, financially successful, and winner of 5 major Academy Awards (including Best Picture, the first and only horror film to do so), The Silence of the Lambs is a fantastic production by every metric. Starring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, and Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the latter of whom would go on to thoroughly own the role via 2 additional onscreen performances in the years to come, the film is brilliantly performed by all involved, with special mention being necessary for Ted Levine, whose utterly fearless performance as Jame “Buffalo Bill” Gumb, is particularly memorable. Beautifully directed by Demme, and shot by renowned cinematographer and frequent collaborator, Tak Fujimoto, and scored by Howard Shore, the film ably wields the potent one-two punch of being terrifically scripted and acted, while also boasting sumptuous visuals and technical flair. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Sam and Beth roll it back to discuss this quintessential 80s classic directed by Jonathan Demme. It could be argued that this film was responsible for launching the careers of Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels, and Ray Liotta —who would all go on to long success as perennial A-Listers (RIP Ray ❤️). It also solidified the status of artists like David Byrne, and Laurie Anderson in popular culture as pioneers and innovators in music. The soundtrack is extensive with 29 songs featuring The Feelies and an iconic performance by Sister Carol (one of Demme's favorite artists and who he also featured in Married to the Mob). We go heavy into the discussion about what defines the true 80s aesthetic, and the authentic early 80s experience —something we think that filmmakers frequently get wrong. This film is a beautiful snapshot of a particularly special time in NYC, where people of all walks of life were creating a scene and making things happen. NYC was going through a time of reimagining and reinvention. Demme's film unfolds to reveal an experience that is one of thousands of tales from the city, and provides the texture and sound that is the closest thing to actually living it. Chris had this as an ex-VHS rental back in the day and has chosen the neo-noir black comedy crime drama, Miami Blues (1990). Miami Blues was an adaptation of Charles Willeford's novel, directed by George Armitage and produced by Jonathan Demme. The film starred Alec Baldwin as the charming yet psychopathic criminal Frederick J. Frenger Jr., Jennifer Jason Leigh as his naive love interest Susie Waggoner, and Fred Ward as the weary, veteran detective Hoke Moseley. The casting process was crucial, with Baldwin bringing a charismatic and unpredictable energy to his role, while Leigh's performance added depth and vulnerability to her character. Ward, also serving as the film's co-producer, provided a grounded and gritty counterbalance to Baldwin's manic character. Filming took place in various locations around Miami, utilizing the city's vibrant and diverse backdrop to enhance the film's atmosphere. The production aimed to capture the seedy underbelly and the contrasting sunny exterior of Miami, which served as a character in its own right. The blend of dark humor, crime drama, and offbeat romance required careful direction to maintain the film's tone. Armitage and Demme's collaboration ensured that the film stayed true to Willeford's unique style while making it accessible to a broader audience. Despite its modest box office performance, "Miami Blues" received praise for its performances, particularly Baldwin's, and has since gained a cult following for its quirky, noir-infused take on crime and romance. The Talking Head's concert film Stop Making Sense first came out forty years ago, and it's just been rereleased in theaters in a 4k remaster by A24. The film finds the band — Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, David Byrne and Jerry Harrison — at the height of their powers over three successive nights at the the Hollywood Pantages Theater. As Chris and Tina remembered it when they spoke to producer Reanna Cruz, "We'd reached a state in our career and our lives when we felt, 'we've gotten pretty good at this now. We can show the world.'" Director Jonathan Demme spliced the band's performances into an eighty-eight minute odyssey beginning with Byrne solo on the stage and gradually bringing in the rest of the band and a cast of stellar guest musicians: vocalists Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales, and guitarist Alex Weir. The film introduced landmark moments like Byrne's big suit, Demme's cinematic approach to concert cinematography, Chris's and Tina's Tom Tom Club performing the perennial sample flip "Genius of Love," and a theater-rocking version of "Burning Down the House." Stop Making Sense broke the mold of concert films and created a new paradigm for artists to follow ever since. Nate, Charlie, and Reanna take insights from Reanna's conversation with Tina and Chris on the legacy of Stop Making Sense as a guide to think through our own favorite concert movies — the Band's The Last Waltz, Madonna's Truth or Dare, and Beyonce's Homecoming — to identify the musical and visual choices that make them so indelible.
