The art of production design can be the art of big world building or adding layers and nuance to the things that are already there....On this special episode we are in the heights of Emmy Award consideration and we get to look behind the scenes on one of our favorite shows. It's time to talk production design and 'Slow Horses'.Going into Season 6, 'Slow Horses' isn't a show that's designed to build new worlds, but as we follow our heroes around the city of London it's about finding new nooks and cranny through the city scape to allow in the suspense to unfold. On the show since it's inception, we had the pleasure of sitting down with production designer Choi Ho Man, to talk about her work on the show, building layers on to something that's already been accepted. You can catch up with 'Slow Horses' over on Apple+ streaming, now.

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Aspen Peak Productions brings events to life, handling everything from audio and lighting to staging and design. They work on corporate, social and nonprofit events, making sure every detail comes together for a seamless, high-quality experience. Co-Owner, Rachel Sorrels-Jones, joins us with more. Rachel Sorrels-Jones: We've all been there before: a corporate summit with harsh lights, bad audio and a distracted audience. As an event host, your biggest fear is being forgettable. Today the ‘standard' event is dead, and the Experience is here to stay. For years, AV was seen as a utility — like electricity. You plugged it in, and it worked. But now, your audience is different. Whether you're a corporate planner or a non-profit director, you aren't just competing with other events; you're competing with the device in their hand. This is where Production Design comes in, to be an architect of atmosphere. When we integrate immersive visuals, we aren't just showing a slide deck — we're building a world around your message. When you invest in intentional design, your ROI shows up in employee engagement, donor connection and brand loyalty. Let us help you focus on your guests, knowing the environment is working for you, not against you. Derek Miller: By elevating events across Utah and bringing people together through thoughtful design and technical expertise, they continue to support local businesses and communities. The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is truly special from top to bottom and we joyously break it all down in our usual TrekRanks style this week with the "Top 5 Starfleet Academy Season 1 Moments." From the introduction to Trek of Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti to the sheer youthful enthusiasm and vigor of the new cast and cadets, this show aced every test thrown its way. Our expert panel of host Jim Moorhouse and guest Jenn Tifft and Michael Bentley cover the entire SFA syllabus with their picks (and also commiserate on the bad timing of learning about the series' long-term demise). This one is non-stop joy. Episode Rundown: Diagnostic Cycle: We break down the five distinct categories we use in our season recap shows. In order, this week's panelists reveal their picks in the following categories: Production Design, Behind-the-Scenes Creative MVP, Dabo Round Wildcard, Character and Episode! We also take a few minutes to discuss the show's cancellation, which occurred just hours before recording. Prime Directive: Our crew breaks down exactly how they defined their lists. The Order of Things: Everyone reveals their picks with the usual "Five word Summary and a Hashtag," along with one episode that helps frame their choice. Secondary Systems: Our guests each rattle off a few additional selections for the picks that just missed our lists! Regeneration Cycle: Everyone recaps their picks and we discuss some of the interesting statistical anomalies that arose from the discussion. Temporal Inversion: We flashback to a previous episode of TrekRanks and relay some of the feedback received from listeners. If you have your own picks you would like to relay to us, please hail us at 757-828-RANK (7265) and record your own personal TrekRanks log to let us know your Top 5 Starfleet Academy Season 1 Moments. (Or you can record it yourself and just DM us @TrekRanks.com on Bluesky.) Your comments could be used as part of a Temporal Causality Loop on an upcoming episode (and might get you a chance to be a guest on a future episode, too). In this solo episode of Decorating Pages, Kim Wannop shares 15 movies every production design student and new set decorator should watch — not just the obvious staples, but the films that teach real lessons in character, mood, atmosphere, restraint, clutter, glamour, symbolism, and storytelling through space. The episode is built around the idea that a room can tell you who a person is before the actor even opens their mouth, and Kim walks through what to look for in films from Our Dancing Daughters and Great Expectations to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Barry Lyndon, Rocky, All the President's Men, The Wiz, Pulp Fiction, Romeo + Juliet, Gattaca, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. It's a craft-forward episode for film students, art department assistants, decorators, and anyone who wants to train their eye and look at movies a little deeper.

Centerville native Hannah Beachler has been nominated for her 2nd Oscar award for best production design of “Sinners”.
The Oscars are the Super Bowl of movies. We're not talking about the prestige of winning, although that certainly lines up. We're talking about how the wider world swoops in once a year to make predictions, rubberneck at the spectacle of it all and maybe even watch the actual event itself.Obviously, Dori and Kpolly are not “the wider world.” They're unpretentious, welcoming, discerning film lovers who want everyone to join them in the fun of cinema (and in the theater itself, because watching movies in theaters is the best). So, with the Academy Awards coming up this Sunday and everyone in full-tilt prediction mode, our duo wanted to jump on board and offer a few picks of their own. This isn't an exhaustive list. While Dori and Kpolly are as excited as anyone about discovering who will win for “Achievement in Production Design,” they stick to the big categories in this episode. Yes, most of them revolve around the showdown between One Batter After Another and Sinners. But does F1 make an appearance? You bet it does!
Join hosts Matt Diaz and Ernesto Santos as we dive into ALL 24 Oscar nominations and give you our predictions on who we think should and will win the top honors at the 98th Academy Awards. We'll also recap the entire 2026 Awards Season by discussing the winners of the Golden Globes, The Critics Choice Awards, The Actors Awards and other notable awards shows. Awards season is almost over, and it's finally time to make our predictions for the 98th Academy Awards! Sinners was the big winner with 16 nominations, and One Battle After Another picked up 13, but there are other great films nominated this year. Will Sentimental Value steal an acting Oscar? How many will Hamnet win? Will Frankenstein win more than just Costume or Production Design? Should F1 have been nominated for Best Picture? We answer all these questions and more. Once again joined by friend of the show Max Dominguez, we break down every category, share our thoughts on the most likely winners, and offer a few takes on who should have been nominated. Agree or disagree with one of our takes? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com

I've got a real one for ya. On this episode of Decorating Pages, I'm talking Death by Lightning (Netflix) with Production Designer Gemma Jackson (Emmy winner, Oscar nominee) and Set Decorator Hannah Gawthorpe — and this is a masterclass in period production design and set decoration. They built 1880s America — New York, Chicago, Washington, Ohio, and the White House — entirely in Budapest, and we get into how they differentiated every world through layout, wallpaper, practical lighting, and dressing choices. Plus: chandeliers, flags, graphics research, and the kind of logistics that only the art department could love. Judging production design means considering not just what we see, but how an entire world was constructed to function on screen. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Bob Shaw (Production Designer), Regina Graves (Set Decorator), and Kerry Weeks (Leadman) to examine the nominees for Achievement in Production Design at the 98th Academy Awards. Representing three distinct roles within the art department, they offer a grounded, practical look at how these films constructed their environments — from large-scale builds to the smallest graphic detail. As with the rest of this year's Oscar series, the conversation is available both as an audio podcast and as a full video episode on YouTube. Our discussion ranges across: The operatic scale and extensive builds of Frankenstein, from castle interiors to laboratory design — and whether grandeur ultimately serves or overwhelms the story The period authenticity of Hamnet, including the recreation of Shakespeare's Globe and the delicate balance between research and creative interpretation The layered Lower East Side streets of Marty Supreme, where signage, storefront graphics, and textural detail quietly anchor a frenetic narrative The cohesive, character-driven environments of One Battle After Another, where homes, dojos, and lived-in interiors feel organic rather than theatrical The tonal shift in Sinners, and the ongoing challenge of aging sets just enough — especially when audience expectations of “period” don't always align with historical reality How decisions about wear, grit, and cleanliness can subtly shape credibility without drawing attention to themselves Why contemporary or less “showy” films like Black Bag are often overlooked despite meticulous design work Additional standouts from the year, including Train Dreams and Song Sung Blue, which demonstrate how tonal precision and environmental detail can carry as much weight as larger-scale builds Across the conversation, the three perspectives reveal how production design succeeds not only through bold visual statements, but through coordination — between design, dressing, graphics, lighting, and performance — so that nothing feels isolated from the world of the film.
