Wait. Rest. Bless. As Easter gives way to Ascension Sunday and the anticipation of Pentecost, this episode of Coffee to Go explores what it means to be “story bearers” of hope, love, and Christ's witness in the world. Reflecting on Jesus' final words to the disciples, Karin Peter and Blake Smith consider the sacred invitation to wait, rest, and receive before stepping into renewed purpose. In a culture that resists slowing down, they ask: What if waiting itself is a blessing? Join the conversation as they reflect on being clothed with the Spirit, finding grace in stillness, and preparing to become a blessing for others. Listen to other episodes in the Coffee to Go series. Download the Transcript. Thanks for listening to Faith Unfiltered!Follow us on Facebook and Instagram!Intro and Outro music used with permission: “For Everyone Born,” Community of Christ Sings #285. In an age dominated by streaming platforms, social media algorithms, and a constant flow of digital entertainment, it might seem unlikely that a series about the life of Jesus would become one of the most talked‑about global media phenomena of the past decade. Yet that is precisely what has happened with The Chosen, the multi‑season television drama created by Dallas Jenkins. What began as a modest, crowdfunded project has grown into an international cultural movement that is reshaping how biblical stories are presented in modern media. As Easter approaches each year—a season centered on the death and resurrection of Christ—the impact of The Chosen becomes even more meaningful. The series not only retells the Gospel story but also invites audiences to rediscover its humanity, relevance, and emotional depth in a way that resonates across generations and cultures. I wanted to trace a bit more of its history and discover why it broke through, especially in today's media climate. As Easter, Passover, and Ramadan converge, Michael explores whether America is experiencing a quiet return to organized faith—or continuing its long secular drift. New data shows declining religious affiliation overall, yet a surprising increase in Catholic and Orthodox conversions. What's driving this contradiction? From post-COVID isolation to technology's grip on daily life, Michael examines whether a hunger for community, structure, and human connection is pulling people back toward churches, synagogues, and mosques—and asks listeners where they stand. Do you have plans for Easter Sunday? Are you making a list of groceries, responsibilities, and church events? Whether you'll be spending this important holiday alone, with friends or family... or possibly at work... I hope you'll center your heart on the peace Jesus provides. Bible Reading: On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” - John 20:19 The weekend when Christians celebrate Good Friday, Sabbath Saturday, and Resurrection Sunday occurs in the springtime in the Northern Hemisphere. So it's often dressed up in the colors, symbols, and delights of the season. From pastel candies to blooming flowers and baby birds—Easter often vibrates with signs of joy and rebirth. And although the word Easter was not the name of a dedicated holiday in the Bible, it is now widely associated with the celebration. If you’re like me, you can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed during Christian holidays that are tightly (or loosely) tangled with non-Christian traditions and expectations. For many, Easter can be a busy blur, brimming with baskets, egg hunts, candy, and tall tales about a gift-bearing bunny. What I want to believe is that choosing to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ in this kaleidoscope of ways is a sign. It’s divine reassurance that Jesus lives—regardless of the chaos we create to distract ourselves from him. There’s no prescription or requirement for how a diversity of humans will spend this special Sunday appreciating what Jesus accomplished. Some are sick in the hospital, some choose to serve, others find church crowds overwhelming, and still others rush to sunrise service. Some turn up at wild parades with even wilder hats, while others prepare a meal for more guests than usual. Yes, when I was raising my children, I filled their baskets, shopped for chocolate, and made sure we attended service. I'm not sure, however, that my family was there in spirit, while marshmallow peeps were nesting back home. My point is that Resurrection Sunday, affectionately called Easter, can be celebrated in many ways, but the reason for it all is peace. And the truth is... we often forget to be peaceful on Easter Sunday. Which is why it’s good to revisit the simple, powerful words Jesus spoke after resurrection: Peace be with you. He didn't tell anyone to fret or rush, put a meal on the table, or even to gather sweets. And he certainly wasn't into hiding—or pretending to be someone he wasn't. As Easter approaches, I hope we can all consider this: his resurrection represents a shedding of fear and doubt. You see, there's nothing wrong with serving, resting, or attending church on Easter. It’s also beautiful to cook, gather, and give in all the ways we love to show love to ourselves and others. But I do hope on the Sunday set aside to glorify the ultimate gift—whether you call it Easter or Resurrection Sunday—you remember what Jesus said: peace be with you. Especially when any preparations or activities feel off-center. During the Last Supper, we read in John 14:27 that Jesus prepared his disciples, saying: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” I think this could also mean you don't have to be afraid you won’t find the perfect Easter outfit, or have perfectly well-behaved children, or know exactly what to say at the dinner prayer. Honoring the resurrection is admitting and embracing a victorious freedom — to receive the peace of Jesus. Let’s Pray: Lord, thank you for the marvelous and awesome gift of proving there is life after earthly death. What a joyous message that even after experiencing brutality beyond belief, you arrive with open hands and encouragement to not fear and to be at peace. This Easter holiday, help me not to allow plans, obligations, or lists overshadow the peace you have for me. Let this be the weekend I resurrect peace within. Let me not worry about who goes where, who shows up, or whether everyone’s holiday is unforgettable. Just help me remember that you are with us, keeping your promise of everlasting peace. In your precious name, Amen. This week's episode brings a fun and honest conversation as the crew kicks things off with some alliteration-filled introductions before diving into a thought-provoking segment called “Whose Will Is It Anyway?” Through real-life scenarios—group chats, big opportunities, Sunday morning stress, and even those quiet moments no one sees—they wrestle with a powerful question: Is this God's will… or mine? The discussion is both lighthearted and deeply challenging, reminding us that obedience—not success, recognition, or comfort—is the true marker of walking with God. The conversation then turns toward prayer and preparation, drawing from Jesus' example in the Garden of Gethsemane. Instead of praying after problems arise, we're called to pray before they come—anchoring our hearts in God's will ahead of time. As Easter approaches, the team encourages listeners to lean into intentional prayer, invite others, and trust that God is working even when we don't see immediate results. It's a timely reminder that faithfulness matters, seeds are being planted, and God's purposes are always bigger than what we can measure.

Holy Week: Anticipation, Forgiveness, and Love

Holy Week is the most important week in all of the Catholic Church year. It commemorates the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus as well as the betrayal of Judas and Peter. This blogcast explores “Anticipation, Forgiveness, and Love" from the Ad Infinitum blog, written by Krissy Pierno. and read by Meghan Abando.Holy Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year; each of the days builds with anticipation and I get excited just by the thought of Easter Sunday. Lent is almost through and it's almost time to be joyful in the Risen Lord. When I was little, I felt this anticipation and excitement too. I would spend Holy Week letting people know that Easter was only a couple short days away—it felt like spring would officially be here as soon as we woke up on Easter Sunday! “The very best holiday of the year” was coming, and I had to get ready for it! Did I fully understand it was Christ that I was waiting for or did I just want to wear my new white shoes for church? Looking back, although it could have been the new Easter shoes, I think my 10 year-old-self would have agreed that I really was waiting for Holy Week as the final stretch to the finish line on a journey that began on Ash Wednesday. In today's Gospel reading, we read about moments of betrayal and loyalty. Judas leaves the Last Supper to betray Jesus while Peter in his humanity says that he will never deny him. I find it to be one of the most powerful Gospels of Holy Week. Here's why: Like Peter, we are called to be disciples whose repentance leads to an experience of God's forgiveness. Jesus knows that his friends will betray him and that he has limited time left on Earth. On one hand, Judas tries not to be obvious about his deception as he leaves the table, and on the other hand, Peter publicly tells Christ that he will stand by him and never fail him. Ultimately, both men betray Jesus, but it's Peter who seeks forgiveness and allows himself a second chance. Judas, on the other hand, is overcome with guilt and despairs that his sin is beyond the reach of God's mercy-- eventually taking his own life.We are like Peter in so many ways! We say we love Christ and that we could never deny him, but at the first sign of pressure we sin and turn our backs on him. How often have we chosen to do something that pulls our hearts from Jesus? It is during Lent—especially during Holy Week—that we recall the pain we've caused Christ. This week and each day, Jesus gives us another chance to say to him, “Forgive me; I have sinned.” When Christ meets his disciples after his Resurrection, he asks Peter, “Do you love me?” Let us respond with Peter this Easter, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you!” As Easter approaches, we remember how much we are loved by Christ in his Passion, death on the Cross, and soon to be Resurrection. In these next few days, I challenge you not to say, “Lord I could never deny you!” but instead, “Forgive me Lord, for I have sinned.”Last year on Good Friday, Pope Francis said, “Lord Jesus, always grant us the grace of holy repentance...the spark of hope is lit in the darkness of our despair, because we know that your only measure for loving us is to love us without measure.” This Holy Week, in this time for “holy repentance,” let us make sure to spend these last days in Lent with our hearts preparing for Easter. May we use these remaining days in the desert as a time for forgiveness and allow our hearts to be loved by Christ. May all of our hearts gleam with anticipation for Holy Week and better knowledge of the Risen Lord! Author:Krissy Pierno is a teacher for the Archdiocese of Washington. Resources:Listen to On Mission: Journeying Through Holy WeekRead and learn about Lent and EasterRead the Ad Infinitum blog Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify Fr. This is part of the enjoyment, but it also represents a change in demand on the body's normal processes.Rather than thinking in terms of restriction or correction, we look at how to support the body through this period. We explore the role of key nutrients involved in normal metabolic function, including those that contribute to energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, and overall physiological balance. This is not about reacting afterwards. As Easter approaches, we can learn from Jesus' final week how to prepare spiritually for this sacred season. Jesus demonstrated four essential steps: preparation through divine providence, celebration by proclaiming His lordship, lamentation over sin's consequences, and purification by cleansing what belongs to God. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, every detail was carefully planned by God, from the donkey that fulfilled prophecy to the crowds who praised Him. Yet Jesus wept over Jerusalem, knowing they would reject Him and face judgment. He then cleansed the temple, showing righteous anger at corruption within His church. These four steps - preparation, celebration, lamentation, and purification - provide a biblical framework for meaningful Easter preparation that goes beyond surface traditions to deep spiritual readiness.

ASK A QUESTION - TELL A STORY - CONNECT WITH US This week's conversation with Hannah Buttram, Josh Hensley, Paxton Redd, and Michael Shearon brings a fresh look at the beginning—walking through the Garden of Eden and how something that didn't seem dangerous became irresistible. Through a fun (and surprisingly revealing) food game, the team highlights how small additions can transform something ordinary into something hard to resist—mirroring how temptation often works in our lives. Sin rarely appears destructive; instead, it appears appealing, subtle, and justifiable. The discussion unpacks how sin is greedy, contagious, and ultimately separates us from God, while also reminding us that the enemy often tempts us with things God has already promised—just twisted or mistimed. The conversation moves deeper into how sin spreads—not just through actions, but through relationships, habits, and even family patterns. From gossip to comparison to hidden struggles, the group reflects on how easily we drift when we're tired, isolated, or trying to carry things alone. Yet even in the weight of sin's reality, there is a strong thread of hope: God's mercy is woven into the story from the very beginning. What may feel like consequence can actually be protection, and what feels like defeat has already been overcome through Jesus. As Easter approaches, the invitation is clear—step out of the cycle of sin and into the life and freedom that Christ has already secured.

We sit down with Pastor Mark to talk through John 15 and the kind of love Jesus actually commands, not a mood, not a slogan, but agape love that is voluntary, sacrificial, and proven by action. We unpack why Jesus says love is the identifier of his true disciples, and why “apart from me you can do nothing” is the key to making that command livable. Abiding in Christ is not a one-time spiritual moment; it is the daily connection that lets the Holy Spirit produce real fruit when our flesh fights back. We also explore how God's love changes what we want, how we treat people, and how we handle the hardest relationships, including the call to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.Then we get concrete. What does truth in love look like when the world pressures believers to affirm everything? We walk through Jesus' response to the woman caught in adultery: no condemnation, no condoning, and a clear call to turn from sin. Simon Says: Be Bold In this eleventh week of the "Simon Says" series, we delve into the transformation of Simon Peter, focusing on his journey from fear to boldness through the power of the Holy Spirit. This transformation is beautifully illustrated in Acts 4 where Peter, once a man who denied Jesus, stands courageously before the religious leaders who had condemned Jesus. Transformation Through Redemption The journey of Simon Peter is a testament to the redemptive power of Jesus. Initially, Simon was a disciple who often stumbled in his faith. However, through Jesus' acts of redemption, such as reversing Simon's denials with affirmations of love, Simon was transformed into Peter, the rock upon which the church was built. This transformation highlights the theme that redemption is not about earning forgiveness but about releasing the burden of past failures to live joyfully in forgiveness. Boldness Through the Holy Spirit The crux of Peter's transformation is the empowerment by the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised the disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost, providing Peter with the boldness and the words he needed to stand firm in his faith. Acts 4:1-22 In Acts 4, Peter and John are arrested for preaching about Jesus and healing a man born paralyzed. This act of healing, performed in Jesus' name, stirred the authorities, leading to Peter and John being brought before the same council that condemned Jesus. Despite the threat of punishment, Peter boldly declares that it is by the name of Jesus Christ that the man was healed, emphasizing that salvation is found in no one else (Acts 4:12). Lessons in Boldness Peter's boldness in the courtroom contrasts sharply with his earlier cowardice in the courtyard, showcasing a significant shift due to the Holy Spirit's presence. This story teaches us several lessons about boldness: Fear of God Over Fear of Man: Boldness stems from a fear of God rather than a fear of man. Peter's courage in the courtroom was due to his reverence for God, allowing him to speak truth to power. Personal Transformation Stories: The undeniable change in the healed man's life served as a powerful testament to God's power. Similarly, our personal stories of transformation through Christ can embolden us to share our faith. Empowerment by the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit grants believers the boldness needed to testify about Jesus. As Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. Call to Action Believers are encouraged to reflect on their own boldness in faith. Are we living in the courtyard, denying Christ out of fear, or in the courtroom, boldly proclaiming His truth? The sermon calls on us to live in the power of the Holy Spirit, sharing our stories and inviting others to experience the transformative power of Jesus. As Easter approaches, consider inviting someone to church to hear the good news of Jesus. Let's exercise the boldness God has placed in our hearts through the Holy Spirit and trust Him to do the rest.

Host: Dan Panetti   The conversation started with this line, “All you can do is live a good life and hope for the best.” I know many people believe this to be true…but is it? And is this the best we can truly hope for? It seems strange to me that we can know more about what we need to get on our final exam in our freshman English class to secure an A in the class than most people believe they can truly know about where they will spend their eternal destiny.   But, I don't believe that God wants us to live with this insecurity and anxiety, when assurance of our eternal destiny can be known…for sure!   In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, God wants us to know that we are all born with the same spiritual condition: death. We are all separated from God because of sin. But in Ephesians 2:4-7, God tells us how we can have the assurance of our salvation - “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved - and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.   Now that's “Good News” - or the Gospel of Jesus Christ - that you can have the assurance of your eternal destiny WITH God made available to you paid for by the blood of Jesus on the cross! If you've never accepted this “free gift” (see Romans 6:23), today is the day of salvation and assurance! As Easter approaches, this truth is what Christians worldwide for centuries have been celebrating - that Jesus Christ paid the price to make men alive - transformed by His grace into “new creations” for His glory! What are you expecting from Jesus? As Easter approaches, Kevin Daughety challenges us to examine a question many of us never stop to ask: Are we seeking Jesus for what He can give us—or for who He is? Looking at the feeding of the 5,000 in John 6, this message exposes how easy it is to chase provision while missing transformation. Jesus invites us into something deeper—a relationship that requires trust, even when we don't fully understand. Key Takeaways: ▪ We often seek provision from Jesus instead of transformation through Him ▪ Jesus calls us to focus on eternal things, not temporary needs ▪ The only "work" God requires is believing in Jesus ▪ Some of Jesus' teachings are hard to understand—but still true ▪ What you consume shapes who you become ▪ A real relationship with Jesus requires trust, not just clarity ▪ Following Jesus means letting Him challenge your identity, beliefs, and lifestyle Scripture References: ▪ John 6:1–69 ▪ John 6:26–29 ▪ John 6:52–58 ▪ John 6:60–69 ▪ Matthew 5 (Sermon on the Mount) ▪ Mark 10:17–22 ABOUT OPEN DOOR CHURCH Open Door Church is located in Edenton, NC, where Pastor Stephen Mizell serves as lead pastor. In 1989, Keith LaMar (aka Bomani Shakur) was sent to prison at age 19 for murder. He had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he sold drugs as a means of survival in the Crack-infested streets he knew as home. On a day that would forever change his life, Keith was robbed at gunpoint and exchanged gunfire with his robbers. He was shot twice in his legs and hit one of the other men in the chest. That young man, one a childhood friend, died. Keith pled guilty and was sent to prison for 18 years-to-life. Four years later, Keith was attempting to put together the broken pieces of his life at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, hoping for another chance at life. It was an Easter Sunday, and the weather had just turned warmer; Keith and about 400 other men were outside exercising in the rec-yard when commotion broke out inside and it became clear that some type of protest was underway. Keith made a quick decision to slip inside for a few minutes to secure his personal belongings (since his cell assignment was in the area being taken over). Once back out in the yard, he and the others waited to see what would transpire, watching as the bodies of several men were dumped onto the yard. As Easter came to an end, the Ohio State Highway Patrol rounded up those on the yard and secured them into another part of the facility. Prison records prove that Keith was among them. Though no one could have predicted what exactly was happening, or how it would all result, an 11-day siege ensued. In the end, nine inmates and one guard ultimately lost their lives. When the dust began to settle, the State of Ohio needed someone on whom to pin several of the early inmate deaths. This is where Keith's troubles began… A few months later, several prisoners were enticed with the promise of early paroles and/or dropped charges if only they would come up with a reasonable story to help the State sweep up the “mess” at their out-of-control prison. They determined Keith would be the fall guy, and they pointed their fingers at him. Thus, to make it all come together convincingly, the prosecution withheld actual confessions from his defense, as well as eyewitness statements that contradicted their fabricated version of events. In spite of zero DNA or forensic evidence, they moved forward with their accusations against Keith. In fact, they made sure his trial would be racially biased in their favor by calling for the removal of the few potential black jurors, and by holding his trial in an all-white county in southern Ohio. In spite of having no motive to kill anyone, no actual proof connecting him, nor any affiliation with any of the groups organizing the uprising, the jury didn't take long to find Keith LaMar guilty of the murder of five of the inmates. He was sentenced to death. Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working class, industrial town outside of Barcelona, where he worked in factories through school. A member of a Catalan anti-capitalist organization as a teenager, he narrowly escaped being detained for his activism. Influenced by the local punk scene, as well as jazz recordings of musicians like Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock, he was self-taught until he attended Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. After graduation, he made two pivotal trips which changed his life, spending a month in the West Bank in Palestine and a month in Cuba. During his four years in Barcelona, he played with the best musicians of the scene, such as Marc Miralta, thanks to his unique, non-academic sound. Upon graduating, he moved to Paris, where he worked in a McDonald's until he learned French. In Paris, he played with musicians such as Remi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and became the pianist in African American drummer Leon Parker's quartet. At 25, Albert moved to New York City, without knowing even one person, to play jazz. After a year and a half working as a waiter and going to jam sessions every night, he met his mentor Arturo O'Farrill, who gave him his own baby grand piano. In addition to his musical influence and encouragement, O'Farrill hired him to teach with his organization, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit that gives free Latin jazz music lessons in the most disadvantaged New York City public schools. Albert also plays and collaborates with his sons, Adam and Zack O'Farrill. In 2014, he married the sculptor Mia Pearlman, with whom he has two children, Aviva and Sol. It is in New York that he finally combined his biggest influences: contemporary jazz, flamenco, Afro Cuban music and social justice by creating Freedom First. He has recorded four albums as a band leader, and regularly collaborates with rhythm master Ari Hoenig, Spanish flamenco singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana, and other American and European musicians. Marques is the Music Director at the Institute for Collaborative Education in NY, a progressive, public middle and high school in downtown Manhattan.

How to Study the Bible
The Power of Jesus vs. The Power of the World (John 18-19)

How to Study the Bible

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2025 18:38

As we continue our journey through the Gospel of John, we dive into chapters 18 and 19, walking through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus as we approach Easter. This season of Lent invites us to engage deeply with a familiar yet profoundly challenging story—the suffering of Christ. It’s easy to skip ahead to the resurrection, but there is so much to learn in these moments of Jesus’ trial, betrayal, and ultimate sacrifice. Key Themes Covered: Human Struggle with Pain & Suffering – As humans, we often avoid pain—whether our own or others’. How do we sit in the reality of Jesus’ suffering without looking away? Jesus & Pilate: A Clash of Power – Jesus stands firm in divine authority, while Pilate sways under pressure. What does true power look like? Pilate’s Search for Truth – When Pilate asks, “What is truth?” is he dismissive or genuinely searching? How does his question reflect modern struggles with truth and authority? Key Verses: John 18:36 – "My kingdom is not of this world." John 19:10-11 – "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above." Matthew 28:18 – "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Philippians 2:9-11 – "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place...that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow." Takeaways: This week, sit with John 18-19 and ask God to reveal areas in your heart where you struggle to surrender to His authority. Reflect on what it means to have spiritual authority through Christ—how can you walk in power, love, and self-discipline? As Easter approaches, let’s not rush past the cross. Let’s sit with the reality of Jesus’ suffering and allow it to deepen our love for Him. Jesus’ power is unshakable, rooted in the truth of who He is. Unlike the fleeting power structures of the world, His authority stands firm. Whatever you are facing today, know that His power, love, and sovereignty are over it all.
