https://youtu.be/rADiqnrhgrk Adam Coughlin, Co-founder, CMO, and Managing Partner of York IE, is on a mission to help startups beat the odds by building strong, capital-efficient brands that resonate with their markets. We explore Adam's Drumbeat Marketing Framework:Messaging & Positioning, Develop Unique Point of View, Execution, and Scorekeeping. He shares why brand consistency beats shiny-object syndrome, how vertical AI is redefining SaaS, and why startups need to balance storytelling with measurable impact. Adam also explains how to foster entrepreneurial thinking early and why founders must lead with a deep sense of purpose. --- Run Through Walls with Adam Coughlin Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast. And my guest today is Adam Coughlin, co-founder, CMO and managing partner of York IE, where he works with startups on foundational messaging, content, communications, go-to-market strategy, website and digital marketing, revenue operations, and corporate storytelling. Welcome to the show, Adam. Yeah, thanks for having me, Steve. Appreciate it. Yeah, you guys are really a full-service shop. You do almost everything. So tell me, how are you guys unique, and what is it that makes you a superior solution for people? Yeah, absolutely. So the founding team of York IE, we all work together at a company called Dine here in New Hampshire that did the domain name system. And we built that company to about a hundred million of annual recurring revenue, got acquired by Oracle. While we were inside of Oracle, we kind of reflected on the growth journey that we took at Dine. And we felt that a lot of the legacy institutions that we turned to for growth help, whether that was our investors, our advisors, our vendors, they were operating out of antiquated models so that were really good for them, but not necessarily for us as the operators. And so that's what we wanted to disrupt. So in 2019, we launched York IE. We are an advisory and investment firm. So we help technology companies grow. We do that through investing in early stage exclusively B2B software companies. And then because we were operators, we also built a strategic advisory firm that does strategy and execution across the functional areas of R&D, go to market and G&A. Because we feel like we want to roll up our sleeves and help companies be successful.Share on X Yeah. So you're basically investing companies that advise them, help to improve them, and some you just advise them and don't invest. So it's a combination. Combination. Exactly. Right. And I think in addition to the advise, it's really important to get across that we do the execution because that is where companies need help. Especially early stage companies. A lot of those teams are small, they're dynamic, they have a good strategy, they just need help and take some things off their plates and we're there to help them with that. Sounds great. So that leads to my question. What is your personal “Why” and how are you manifesting it in your business? Yeah, absolutely. I think this is a great question. And my personal “Why” is I love entrepreneurs. I think that they are both visionary and builders and that they are pursuing their dreams in the effort to create something and build something that makes the world better. And I think that if they build good companies, then they hire good employees. Good companies have impacts on communities. Good companies build wealth.Share on X But unfortunately, the numbers are stacked against them. A large majority of startups fail, and I don't think that needs to be the case. And that's what I want to try to impact. If we can lower those numbers a little bit and help more founders and entrepreneurs succeed, then we're going to have a really positive impact on things because of all the good things that come from that success. Yeah, well, I couldn't resonate more with that.

I'm Paul Grau Jr., the host of this show, and I'm excited about Season 10. This season will focus on “The Learning Leader” and/or as we refer to it here at The CLC Team, “The Expanding Leader. Every episode will primarily focus on the lifelong journey of expanding your knowledge of leadership, and I will try to give you a daily takeaway to put what you learn into action. My goal is that you learn something that you can take immediate action on, and see how powerful expanding your leadership can be.    Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult for a group of leaders to norm or be consistent? Well, it's because every leader is unique and has their own style and way of leading their team. By coming together and forming a bond in your organizations leadership team, you can begin norming better than ever before. I use the DISC assessment with every client and team I work with and have found it to be a real game-changer for the entire team. This is certainly no different when you have a group of leaders together. In order for them to work together in unison, they have to begin by knowing each other very well. That's where the DISC comes in, so I will mix the DISC behavioral styles in throughout this series. I am a DISC Certified Trainer and Consultant and have worked with behavioral styles for over 20 years. I am certified through the John Maxwell Leadership Team and have worked with hundreds of teams. If you are interested in having me work with your team leaders or if you want to purchase a DISC assessments for yourself and your team, please contact me via email at Paul@CLCTeam.com If you want to dive in deeper, here are some great books to read and study about the behavioral styles: “Surrounded by Idiots” by Thomas Erikson https://amzn.to/4gphp0D “Full Spectrum Success: Living and Leading in True Color” by Jacob Adamo https://amzn.to/3zglV0A “The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin https://amzn.to/4dVCMVB “Wired That Way” by Marita Littauer. https://amzn.to/4dZHXUj “Personality PLUS” by Florence Littauer. https://amzn.to/4d1jQmT   Please listen daily (Mon – Friday) as Paul focuses on not only giving tips about how to be a great leader, but also a leader who is respected, a leader who people want to follow, a leader who can confidently navigate their way through both personal and professional challenges, a leader who is not afraid to share their faith while living it out, a leader who knows his/her purpose and lives to fulfill that purpose every day, and a leader who has no regrets! In this episode of "The Strategy Gap", hosts Jonathan Morgan and Joe Krause engage in a robust conversation with Marc Mertz, the Chief Strategy Officer at Kaweah Health. Marc, who has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, delves into the significant role of a Chief Strategy Officer (CSO). He explains that a CSO is pivotal in leading the development of the strategic plan, engaging various teams in the process, and overseeing the plan's execution throughout the year. Marc highlights that his position allows him to focus on conceptual strategic thinking, such as developing new services and market positioning, as opposed to being absorbed by day-to-day operational responsibilities. The discussion further explores the challenge of balancing immediate operational pressures with strategic foresight, especially in a high-stakes environment like healthcare. Marc shares his insights on encouraging executives and staff to allocate mental space for strategic thinking by conducting visioning sessions. He also talks about the importance of transforming complex strategic plans into simplified formats, such as a single-page document that includes the organization's mission, vision, pillars, and measurable outcomes. This approach not only enhances understanding and visibility but also ensures the strategic plan remains a functional tool rather than a neglected document. Moreover, the episode emphasizes the vital components of execution and accountability in strategic planning. Marc discusses the use of tools like AchieveIt to track progress, ensure timely updates, and maintain visibility across the organization. He also underscores the significance of regular updates and presentations to leadership teams and the board, which fosters continuous engagement and accountability. The conversation touches on the necessity of annual reviews to adjust plans as needed while celebrating milestones and successes to keep the momentum going. By engaging all levels of the organization and maintaining a structured review process, Marc firmly believes that strategic plans can transition from static documents to dynamic guides that drive meaningful progress. In this episode:0:00 The Role of the Chief Strategy Officer in Healthcare4:19 Strategic Thinking for Executives During Crisis8:34 Community-Informed Strategic Planning for Organizational Success10:17 Including Stakeholders in Plan Execution: Focusing on Benefits15:44 Scorekeeping and Visibility in Strategic Planning17:41 Managing Control and Pressure in Professional Settings20:43 The Power of Consistency in Achieving Change25:41 The Importance of Adhering to One-Year Plans27:35 Navigating the First Year: Patience and Focus

·      Is it hard or easy for you to forgive? ·      Fear of being hurt again.  ·      Feel shame.  ·      Feel in control.  ·      Feel vulnerable.  ·      Feel pressured.  ·     Feel angry – still.  ·      What if God felt this way toward us?  ·      What if church is supposed to be a model of a healthy family?  ·      21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” ·       Scorekeeping divides relationships into winners and losers.  ·      Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.   ·      The more forgiveness, the stronger the relationship. ·       23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. ·       26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,' he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.' 27 The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. ·       How rich is the King that he forgives this much?  ·      28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.  He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. ·      29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.' ·      30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. ·       31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.  ·       32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,' he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. ·      35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”  ·      If you are truly forgiven, you can forgive.  ·      Forgiveness is a decision, not a feeling.  ·      When you forgive, you release the other person and yourself. ·      The more forgiveness, the stronger the relationship. ·       Ephesians 2:4-5 - 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. ·       If your heart has not been changed so you can forgive, has Jesus changed your heart? ·      Name the hurt. ·      Feel the hurt.  ·      Hate the hurt.  ·       Release the hurt.  ·      “Forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  ·      I know for sure that forgiveness is a gift that actually benefits me, the giver. ·      Is there someone you need to forgive?  ·       Do you know God's forgiveness in your heart? LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS  Starter Question: In your life, who is the hardest person to forgive?  Why?  1.  What does Jesus want us to know? 2.  Have you ever dealt with someone who will not admit they hurt you or sinned against you?  How did that make you feel? 3. In your opinion, when do you think the church should be involved in conflict between two people? 4. Jesus says if a person will not listen to the church, let them be to you as a pagan or a tax collector.  How then should you relate to them?

The conversation delves into the concept of people-pleasing and the impact of learned behaviors on decision-making. It explores the challenges of setting boundaries, understanding personal desires, and breaking free from familiar patterns. The discussion also touches on the importance of self-awareness and the willingness to embrace discomfort in order to make authentic choices. We talk about: -Shadow work involves integrating the parts of oneself that are denied or hidden, leading to a deeper understanding of one's complexity and a sense of humility. -The environment in which a person grows up influences their behavior and the way they perceive 'normal,' leading to challenges in self-acceptance and authenticity. -Scorekeeping in relationships can impact the way individuals interact and perceive their own worth, leading to patterns of accommodation, entitlement, and difficulty in maintaining balance. -The journey of self-discovery and personal development involves unlearning the need to conform and adapting to environments where one feels accepted for being their true self. The struggle of people-pleasers to make decisions based on their own desires rather than trying to -please others. Are you tired of setting ambitious goals at the beginning of each year only to find yourself falling short? If so, it's time to consider a new approach to goal-setting and productivity. In their groundbreaking book, "The 12 Week Year," authors Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington introduce a revolutionary system that can help you achieve more in 12 weeks than most people do in an entire year. In this blog post, we'll explore the key concepts of "The 12 Week Year" and how it can transform your personal and professional life. The 12 Week Year: A Game-Changing System "The 12 Week Year" is centered around the idea that annual goal-setting is ineffective because it leads to procrastination, lack of focus, and reduced urgency. Instead, the authors propose breaking down your goals into 12-week periods, allowing you to maintain focus, accelerate progress, and achieve more. Vision and Planning A successful 12-week year begins with a clear vision of what you want to achieve. This vision should be inspiring, realistic, and align with your values. Once you have a vision, it's time to create a strategic plan with specific, measurable, and time-bound goals. Break your goals into smaller tasks and prioritize them according to their impact and urgency. Weekly and Daily Execution With your plan in place, the next step is to execute it efficiently. Each week, review your goals and set aside dedicated time to work on high-impact tasks. Break your week into manageable chunks and assign specific tasks to each day. This will help you maintain focus and stay on track. Scorekeeping and Accountability To ensure you stay committed to your goals, establish a system to measure your progress. Keep track of your accomplishments and setbacks, and use this information to adjust your plan as needed. Hold yourself accountable for your actions, and seek support from a trusted mentor, coach, or accountability partner. Time Mastery Time management is crucial for success in the 12-week year system. Learn to prioritize tasks, eliminate distractions, and allocate time effectively to achieve your goals. Make the most of your productive hours and respect your work-life balance. Continuous Improvement The 12-week year system is about constant growth and learning. Reflect on your achievements and setbacks, and use this insight to inform your future plans. Embrace a growth mindset, and don't be afraid to adapt and pivot when necessary. Conclusion: "The 12 Week Year" is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to maximize their productivity and achieve their goals. By breaking your year into 12-week cycles, you can maintain focus, increase urgency, and ultimately, unlock your full potential. Implement the concepts discussed in this blog post, and experience the transformative power of "The 12 Week Year" for yourself. Let's be honest, love is - and never should be - about keeping score. But let's play with that anyway because sometimes we don't know what we know (or don't) about love. For me, consciously, LOVE is doing/being/becoming what you love. LOVE is everywhere all the time. LOVE is living in abundant manifestation. The (imaginary AND creative) scorekeeping system of LOVE I present here is creative food for contemplation... Love is about: TIME: if you want love, you give your time. I am a liar if I say "I love you" but won't give you my time. It is my greatest and most precious gift to give or spend.  ATTENTION: if I give you my time, I will do my best to not allow distractions to remove me. Even if I have my own emotions happening, I will come back to being there.  ENGAGEMENT: Being fully engaged means I'm on the highest level of deep listening. I ask questions. How do I engage with you to help you experience my time as powerful? PRESENCE: Being fully present means my body - mind, eyes, ears, feelings - are looking to KNOW who you are. Breathing consistently re-engages presence. I am MYSELF. RESPONSE: Am I attentive to your/our needs both then and later? How I respond to you as an individual and partner means I do my best to remember what you need.  If you explore this type of scorekeeping, the game of competition ends and the game of LOVE remains and reigns supreme - as it should.

What is Love Truly? Love is in the air! On today's episode, I was joined by the lovely Kim Sorrelle. Kim is a writer, speaker, entrepreneur, and so much more. In this conversation we talk about what love truly is, learning how to love, and giving love freely without expectations of something in return. Kim helps people discover what the true meaning of love is through her work. Love is the most beautiful gift we have, and when we learn to share that gift, the love will be abundant.    The "Feeling" of Love Love is such a complex topic to talk about. It's something we all strive to have in life. When hard times strike, love is there to pick us back up and lift us to strength. Kim said, “Love is the ultimate freedom. There is nothing freer than walking in love.” Real, true, love isn't about fixing people, or judging people, it's about showing up whole-heartedly with kindness, compassion, and empathy. 1 John 4 says, “We love because we have first been loved,” and this is key for us to remember: when we have an understanding of God's love for us, we can love others. Thus, love has no boundaries.   Learning How to Love In order to give love, you must be able to receive love. Kim said “Love is universal.” We all are put on this earth to love and be loved. When you learn to give love unconditionally then the receiving of love will come naturally. Often times, we learn how to love through our family and how we were raised as children. As we watched our parents express what love was, we inherited their version of love and carried that with us as kids and into adulthood. Kim says, “You live what you learned.” As adults, it's our job to learn what love means to us, despite what we may have learned from our parents. We have the opportunity to overcome things that prohibit us from loving and learning how to love. We have the freedom to create unconditional love in our lives without restriction.    Giving Love Without Conditions When we are craving love, we need to look at how we are giving love. Do you give love only to receive something back? Expressing the emotion of love is most powerful when there is no need to receive anything in return. When you give love to people without the need to receive it back, that is unconditional love. 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a  says “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast.” This is about honoring yourself and providing love to people who really need love in that moment. When we stop focusing on receiving something back, we can show up fully in love and help others be seen. Kim said, “Being patient is when you actually hear what people have to say, you stop and listen without having your rebuttal to go, and actually listen to them.” When you take a moment to see a human being and hear their story, that's when the love will naturally be ignited.    Love Does Not Keep Score Some people see love as, “Because I did this for you, you need to do that for me.” Love is not about keeping score. Love is about giving freely the love that you have. When you give your love freely without keeping score, it will give back to you in abundance. Kim said “Love is what you do, love is something you are, that you give, that you live. Then there's no score keeping.” Giving love is self-serving because when you give more, you will receive it back naturally. Scorekeeping can often show up in our marriage. In those moments we need to remember to practice patiences and grace, giving our partner the love they need in that moment. When we learn to tap into the love inside our hearts, through the guidance of God, all will prevail.      Links Mentioned in this Episode Visit Kim's Website : Kim's Website Get my Love Is… Workbook!    SUBSCRIBE | SHARE | RATE | COMMENT To ensure you never miss an episode, be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, or wherever you listen to podcasts. We've talked before about why you should limit or eliminate the error for the purpose of evaluation of hitters, but it can be extended to your fielders, too. It's a huge adjustment for many, but it's so worth it. The error is a flawed stat that is subjective and lacks context. But it's really less about what the error DOESN'T say than anything. This episode is about a somewhat illusive concept called “happiness”. Many times, our pursuit of this is an adventure in missing the point. So, we'll bring a bit of a counterculture (roguish!) perspective to cultivating a happy life. And, as always, our conversation will be roguish, as we weave in our core values and, as always, we'll share a mystic MacNugget. Let's strap in… Hey Stu… “Namaste, all of you beautifully, exotic cocktails… Comment on Facebook, email us, we want to more of these stories! Great Instagram stories this week! Manifesto points to consider: Wise evolves from me to we. Wise measures effectiveness against faithfulness. Wise Goes beyond what happens to what matters. THE SETUP-Happiness. Basis for this discussion comes from an article in Thttps://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2021/01/checklist-achievements-happiness-boxes/617756/ (he Atlantic by Arthur C. Brooks,) entitled, “True success is more than checking boxes.” Definition A state of well-being and contentment. A pleasurable or satisfying experience (life). Bliss, joy, delight. Beatles vs Rolling Stones: Wanting to hold your hand vs getting satisfaction. Ha! Should it even be about our happiness? My story about the “no”. THE ISSUES In our western society we are “checklisters”. Accomplishment and ambition don't drive happiness. It's misbegotten to think so. Birthdays are milestones to check our progress. Scorekeeping makes us dependent on external rewards, and it sets us up for dissatisfaction. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Relying on external rewards lowers satisfaction. Why does happiness seem so elusive? Or is it? If your happiness depends on an escalating list of worldly accomplishments, you might soon find that your fear of failure supplants your ambition. THE SOLUTION-WHAT DOES BRING HAPPINESS? WHO HAS INTRINSIC CHARACTERISTICS THAT I ADMIRE AND WANT TO EMULATE? WHAT DO PEOPLE MOST NEED FROM ME, AND HOW CAN I PROVIDE IT? WHAT IS MY LIFE'S PURPOSE? Asking life's “why” questions. If you can't say that you have a happy life, shoot for just some happy moments. String them together and amazingly you get a life filled with happiness. Happiness comes from the illumination of your greatest virtues, thus showing the way for other people, and making visible to yourself your true purpose. MYSTIC MACNUGGET "Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action." —William James

I know it has been for me. Being forced to stay home and limit outings has given most of us the opportunity to build our relationships, which hopefully for you, has been a good thing.   One of the biggest challenges and threats to building and sustaining a healthy relationship is that of "Scorekeeping" your partner or spouse. Her is an example of what this means: If your spouse or partner is always late, stop keeping a mental note of how many times this happens, and more importantly stop bringing this up to them.  This is often hard to do, but you must decide if this is a battle you want to fight. Now if they are doing it on deliberately then it might be a different story. A good gauge is if they are late with EVERYONE not just you. Maybe they have a hard time with time management, and they don't understand the time contstraints that come with driving through traffic to get to your dinner reservation on time. It could be many other examples - you get the point.   Scorekeeping can be very detrimental to a relationship and you must decide if something your partner or spouse does frequently is a DEAL BREAKER for you in your book. Maybe it is, but I now when it comes to me, a lot of things I get irrated about are just small things that will be forgotten soon. Remember the saying "Making Mountains out of Mole Hills?" Are you like that? You need to change things then.   Relationships are the things that matter in life - not things.   Go out and conquer your Monday and stay tuned for more great shows on The CJEvolution Podcast.

content: Aug 28, 2018 · podcast: Feb 4, 2019 Audio (MP3): 20180828 - Stop keeping score What I mean by this is something along the lines of: Last time I came home you didn’t look up from the TV so the next time you walk in I’m not going to stop watching it either. Scorekeeping is a way for me to exert control in a situation where I feel like I have none. When I feel helpless, putting marks on the blackboard helps me claim some power. I will punish you when you hurt me, give you the silent treatment when you don’t pay attention to me. Won’t fold your laundry because you were more interested in your phone at dinner than talking to me. That kinda bullshit. Keeping score doesn’t work though. It perpetuates the infinite, dysfunctional loop. It’s sprinkling more salt on my wounds. And theirs. It’s me locking myself in a box with all the things that’ve ever hurt me. It’s me saying that keeping track of what you’ve done wrong is more important than the overall health of our relationship. If I want to have healthy relationships I need to practice healthy behaviors. Talk to people about what’s bothering me as things come up. And if they don’t take my feelings into consideration, if they aren’t willing to compromise for the greater good then fuck them. We deserve better. I better compromise, too. Take what people say with an utmost urgency because they’re taking a chance on me. Going out on a limb and showing their own vulnerability. And please don’t think that I’m some kind of spiritual dynamo here. I’ve kept score my whole life and you know what I got? At the end of the day with that blackboard filled with checkmarks? I got a list of resentments as long as both arms. I got a pile of hurt long after they were gone. An index of crimes and criminals. A mental spreadsheet with dates and times going back to the first day when I didn’t feel like I could tell you what was wrong. One time when I was married to Kathy I unloaded my scorecard on her, spread all her felonies out on the bed for her to see. I can’t imagine how she must’ve felt knowing that the whole time we’d been together I was silently keeping score. When I think back on it now I’m embarrassed. More than that, I’m ashamed. I was a real champ. Sure, in my early 20s I didn’t know my ass from a hubcap but memories like that are what push me to be a good person in the here-and-now. Resentments aren’t good company. And then when a good soul does comes my way I won’t be ready. I’ll start a new scorecard. You’ll have a clean slate but a slate none-the-less. How about I just erase the blackboard. And throw away the chalk. Retire the standing army. Learn to deal with myself and my feelings. Communicate with those I care about and care about me. I look back on certain parts of life and think, “boy I really fucked that up” ... but the good news is that for the last few years, I feel like I’ve done my best work. Been my best self and that’s a pretty good feeling. So much more than tallying your scores and balancing the books. Each day I’m given a fresh chance to be a better person. It’s a new day to give people another chance. If I want power in life, if I want control then that’s where it’ll come from. MP 044: How do I prepare my marriage for a first baby? (Part 2)

Married People Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2018 42:34

Today we’re continuing a conversation about preparing your marriage for a baby. If you missed part 1, go back and listen to that for more context. This week we’re continuing the clarifying questions that you and your spouse can ask as you get ready for first baby. How can you show your spouse appreciation for what they’re doing as a new parent? Often times, we revert to scorekeeping in hectic times—including when we have a new baby. Scorekeeping in marriage usually leads to unwanted and unneeded competition. Asking how you can show your spouse appreciation helps to level the playing field. Remember that you’re both on the same team. How do you plan to handle intimacy once the baby arrives? Once baby is here, exhaustion and stress can kill the intimacy. So you need to talk about what the season looks like. Men, you will need to be more understanding in this area than ever before. Don’t be afraid to schedule sex for when you’re not so exhausted. Who will be willing to help you if you ask? Who are the people in your community? Let your parents or in-laws help as much as possible. Let friends bring you food or keep your kid while you go on dates. Taking time to rest and restore makes you a better parent and spouse! It’s especially important to have people around who have kids and can be there to encourage you. You may also want to talk about the people you’ll need to have boundaries with as well. How can you use a schedule to plan out your time? Plan out what your days will look like, what the week will look like. Schedule time for your marriage. It will look way different, but how can you continue to pour into your marriage during this time? There are three questions that can help with this: What’s the time for you? What’s the time for me? What’s the time for our US? These times can be short. Maybe mom just wants a few minutes for a bath. Or dad needs 30 minutes to watch ESPN. But these things make a big impact. And it’s so important to find time the two of you can be an US again. People can get so disconnected and it all becomes about the baby. Having a baby is so full of challenges, but don’t miss time with the baby and each other. Take the time to stare at baby and laugh at the faces and stinky diapers. Be extra present when the baby is content and just be a family. You will sleep again, promise. Your one simple thing for this week Sit down with your spouse and ask each other these questions. Or share them with another couple you know who is expecting a child. Show Closing Thanks for joining us for the MarriedPeople Podcast. I Do, We Do
Episode 4: Competition Kills Relationships

I Do, We Do

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2018 27:58

In this episode of I Do, We Do, we discuss how competition negatively impacts relationships. Billy is very competitive, Ashley is not. That has led to conflict in the past when playing games against each other. We have come to realize that competition and scorekeeping really kill relationships because instead of I Do, We Do it becomes I Did, You Didn’t. Instead of For Better or Worse it is “I’m better, you’re worse.” Check us out at BashleyMoyer.com/podcast. WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT IN THIS EPISODE: We discussed that the easiest way we see competition in our relationship is in different games that we play We mentioned how Ashley is a big believer in that “you play games to have fun” whereas Billy believes that you play games for the one and only reason, which is to win We discussed that “the number one killer in a team/relationship is competition” You need to oppose the idea/situation where it could involve teammate vs. teammate, husband vs. wife, or partner vs. partner, because you want to go into the mindset that the team needs to win, not one person over the other eventually someone loses in  a competition (which could increase tension within the relationship) We discussed how keeping score is a killer as well Ashley discussed how growing up, her and her sister had to evenly split up the house chores/duties. It wasn’t fair if Ashley cooked dinner and then had to wash the dishes the same night. It wasn’t fair if Ashley did two chores and her sister did zero. Billy talked about how he learn early on from his Dad about the danger of keeping score in relationships, even though he loves keeping score in all other competitions. We discussed how keeping score can also happen with accomplishments, but really in a partnership there are not individual accomplishments. It all is about us. “One person’s win, success, and/or accomplishment is the other’s as well in a relationship.” One employee’s success in a business indicates that the business is successful too “You shouldn’t compare yourself to anyone” We discussed how compromise is key “If compromise is difficult for you in a relationship regardless, maybe there’s a little too much competition there.” Music "Sunny" from Bensound.com.

1 Corinthians 13:5 Three reasons why we shouldn’t keep score: 1. …because we don’t have all the facts. -James 1:19 “Our use of mobile phones and the internet… collapse boundaries between social groups and conversations and break down generational, educational, and social distinctions. We are all brought closer to each other in a way that disguises and is hostile to pronounced differences of competence, authority, and right to honour. Our media tend to flatten out our social spaces in an egalitarian way, falsely suggesting that all voices merit an equal part in the conversation. As conversations that would previously be clearly separated from each other start to eavesdrop upon, to intrude in, and to become entangled with each other, the results can be volatile.” -Alastair Roberts 2. …because it’s a mark of immaturity -1 Corinthians 3:1-4 3. …because it turns a road into a highway.
