THIS WEEK: Joe wakes up in the ruined high-tech world of Sudra to revive the giant mechanical guardians known as the Rusalki with Thomas Happ's work in Axiom Verge and Peter does a barrel roll and rumbles along from Corneria to Venom to stop the evil Andross in Star Fox 64.
Axiom Verge is arguably the most Metroid-like Metroidvania out there. One of us had played it previously, the other hadn't. After revealing and reviewing our Secret Games, we bring two different perspectives to our review of Thomas Happ's magnum opus. This is Underplayed, where Bo_Po and DiscoCola review indie games of all kinds! Timestamps00:00 - Start01:00 - DiscoCola's Secret Game11:35 - Bo_Po's Secret Game20:08 - Featured Game: Axiom Verge
Axiom Verge 2, another game 5 years in the making by Thomas Happ is finally here. Does it live up to or even surpass the original? Does it fix issues we had with the first game? Tune in! The End of Season 2 and we forgot about it. James and I roll into this week's roundup discussing several items of news including; Pokémon United is coming to mobile, gaming auction house and the valuation companies are bad, Netflix's Magic the Gathering Series looks lost, Bethesda hires outside talent, and Studio 343 is pushing out an unfinished Halo Infinite. We then get into the wonderfully delightful indie game Axiom Verge solely created by Thomas Happ. This game is a nostalgia trip out the ying yang, as you travel through a unique take on the Metroid games of old. This game brings much warmth to my heart. Check it all out in this week's episode.
A WEEK IN GEEK: Before things get started, D. talks about becoming mildly internet famous for about a day (the social media accounts of his favorite band, Twisted Sister, shared art he made of each band member). For those wondering, here's the scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure in which Twisted Sister appears. INDIE ACCOLADES: Andrew and D. talk about the world of independent creation––mostly games, mostly video games––and how it works in the face of the big corporate franchises discussed for the past few weeks. WEEKS IN INDIE GAMES: Andrew and D. mention a few indie games that they've been enjoying over the last month or so. Andrew discusses his love and frustration with Thomas Happ's metaroidvania Axiom Verge and Powerhoof's Crawl. D. keeps returning to the existential dread that is noio's Kingdom: Classic as well as to the hilarious existential horror of Kitfox Games' The Shrouded Isle. WORKS CITED: Knoop, Josh. Axiom Verge is an indie Metroidvania video game created by Thomas Happ...written on his own in nights and weekends! Written in C# and Monogame, Axiom Verge is now on PlayStation 4, Windows, OS X, Linux, Vita, Wii U, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch! Scott talks to Thomas about how one starts a herculean effort like this...and succeeds!
2v1 starts the week with some emails concerning the Great Destiny Character Debate before diving into impressions of Forza Horizon 3 - a fun, accessible, and all around feel-good driving game. Nick finds that Bloodborne is a great Souls game with a fresh setting, but it took steps backwards for a long time fan. Josh is still playing Destiny for some reason and he can highly recommend Axiom Verge. Lastly, the crew runs down some news from the industry.
