Want a shout out on the show? Shoot us a text and share your thoughts, game suggestions, etc.!This week on Backwards Compatible, we're cracking open the panels of Comix Zone for the Sega Genesis—a visually striking, brutally difficult beat-'em-up that dropped in July 1995.Lou and I talk through the game's unique comic book aesthetic, its place in mid-'90s gaming, and why it still stands out nearly 30 years later. We get into what made it so innovative, what held it back from getting a sequel, and whether it's due for a modern-day revival.Plus: we talk broader ideas around reviving dead franchises, adapting comics into games, and how graphics evolution shaped the '90s. If you ever felt like you were literally inside a comic book, this one's for you.Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame As an SNES kid, I'm still a noob when it comes to the Sega Genesis library. I've played some GREAT games on the Genesis over the life of this show, and I'm happy to add Comix Zone to that list. Looks awesome. Great concept. And tough as fuck. I say it all the time, but I love tough retro games. Just hearing the phrase 'NES tough' turns me on a little. And Comix Zone is along those lines. This might be the toughest Genesis game I've ever played, and I keep coming back for more. I'm rolling solo this week, but I snuck a bunch of listener comments into the game review. If you've never played Comix Zone, I hope this convinces you to give it a shot. Don't let the difficulty scare you off. It's a beat 'em up, inside a comic book. And the protagonist looks like Egon. What else do you need??? And before I start reading comics, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what I would do it I had the green light to revive a dormant franchise in a new genre? Which IPs would make great tactical games?? And how do I manage my backlog?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Sega Genesis comic book games: The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage, and X-Men 2: Clone Wars. Learn more about your ad choices. The EA saga continues. We wax poetic through an imaginary game world of http://www.joystickandmouse.com http://shop.joystickandmouse.com/ https://www.patreon.com/joystickandmouse Show Notes The best video games are imaginary. Often they exist completely in our heads, or in the dreamy space between their initial announcement and what we finally end up playing. This is where “Arkham World” exists. Born from a 2011 Video Game Awards gag, the completely fictitious entry in the massively popular Batman Arkham series is now all some fans can talk about. https://kotaku.com/batman-arkham-world-spider-man-gotham-knights-wb-1849436007 And just when you think it might be safe to back into the EA waters ... they release Madden 23 which should have been cause for celebration but in true typical EA fashion snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Sony, just like Microsoft and Valve, (and Apple) has long taken this cut from purchases on its store, but consumer rights activist Alex Neill is claiming that this is a breach of consumer rights. Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 had plenty of trailers and gameplay reveals, but what did Sean and Marc find most interesting from the showcase? How does it stack up to what Geoff Keighley has done with Summer Game Fest and Opening Night Live in the past? And what are the guys looking forward to for the rest of this year? Embracer Group made HUGE news with the purchase of the Lord of the Rings IP, Limited Run Games, Tripwire Interactive, and a whole lot more. Could there be more in store? And what could this mean for LOTR? There are also the latest NPD sales, the canceled Iron Man game, SEGA, and Sony making more movie news with four movies on four known franchises including Space Channel 5, Comix Zone, Days Gone, and Gravity Rush. PSVR 2 coming in 2023, the KOTOR Remake officially switches studios, and much more. You can also watch this episode on video through our Youtube channel, W2M Network. The Sega Genesis released in 1989, but it was not until Sonic the Hedgehog would release in June of 1991 that Sega would really begin to gain market share against Nintendo. The release of Sonic as well as an aggressive ad campaign, would lead to Sega bringing serious competition to Nintendo for the first time. Sega followed up the Genesis with creating the Sega CD which brought a new level of audio as well as improved visuals to the system. Unfortunately, Sega released the 32X shortly before the Saturn would release and would essentially mark the beginning of Sega retreating from console manufacturing. We discuss all of that and a whole lot more on this episode of the Nerdthusiast Gaming Podcast!
