We are at the beginning of "spooky season," and while this isn't (yet) our Halloween episode, October is a fine time to shine a spotlight on composer Michiru Yamane, known in our parts for her excellent work on the Castlevania and Suikoden series. That means some games you may expect, but definitely some you wouldn't, from this talented composer. So dim the lights, summon your favorite fairy companion, and get ready.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Audra Bowling, Patrick Gann; Edited by Paul DennisTracklistCome See the Softer Side of... Off-Road Racer Podcast
Episode 67: Rich Minga

Off-Road Racer Podcast

In this episode of the Off-Road Racer Podcast, I sit down with off-road racer, tour guide, and Hollywood stuntman Rich Minga. Rich had an unsuspecting start in off-roading, going on camping trips with his family in Baja. After getting hooked on Hot VWs Magazine, Rich started sweeping the floors at a buggy prep shop in El Cajon, and built his own Baja Bug at the young age of 15. Taking what he learned from How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, Rich would go on to help prep cars for Mark Stahl, Jim Guthrie, and Dan Gurney. After many years of prepping, and getting the occasional chance to drive, Rich would start his own race program, racing Baja in class 9 in 1986. Just one year later, Rich took the overall points championship. Because of his performance in racing, and all of the people he met in off-road, Rich got the opportunity to perform vehicle stunts in an episode of Baywatch. This led into a career as a stuntman in Hollywood, where Rich would use his experience in racing to perform stunts in dozens of films. Now, Rich is a guide and driving coach for Wide Open Baja, while still operating as a stuntman. Rich and I sit down to talk about his lifelong history in off-road, and more. I'm your host Matt Martelli, and this IS the Off-Road Racer Podcast.

After decades of exploration – or exploitation – Louisiana is covered with thousands of orphaned wells. Now, there are new efforts to plug up these sites, like a $12.7 million grant in Federal funding from the Bipartisan Jobs Act to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. WWNO's Coastal reporter Kezia Setyawan spoke with Senior Advisor for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Jim Guthrie, for more. Earlier this month the new docu-series, Making Black America: Through the Grapevine, premiered on PBS. Hosted by renowned scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, and directed by Stacey Holman and Shayla Harris, the four part series examines the Black experience over the past 250 years, diving into everything from post-emancipation Black schools to the social media phenomenon of Black Twitter. Co-director Stacey Holman, shares more about this ambitious project. From King Cake Fest to Gumbo Fest, New Orleans is no stranger to exciting food events. But just last week attendees had the chance to taste African, African American, and Caribbean cuisine as part of the annual Black Restaurant Week. Event cofounder, Falayn Ferell, and co-owner and executive chef of Café Sbisa, Alfred Singleton, tell us more about the week and the importance of supporting minority-owned businesses. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. Our engineers are Garrett Pittman, Aubry Procell, and Thomas Walsh.  You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at 12:00 and 7:30 pm. On today's episode I talk to musician Owen Pallett. Since the age of three, Owen has been playing violin, and as a young teenager, he composed his first piece. This started him on the path to making music for a living. On his own, he's written and recorded a number of great albums both as Final Fantasy and under his own name. Additionally, Owen's written for and toured with a number of great bands including Jim Guthrie, The Hidden Cameras, Beirut and perhaps most notably Arcade Fire for their albums Funeral, Neon Bible and The Suburbs. Back at the end of May, Domino released Owen's fifth album Island, and it's absolutely wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

In this episode: Tips and to hone and sharpen your songwriting skills The process of letting go and trusting other people with your creative process How important it is to have effective communication  when collaborating How to keep your vocal performance consistent when touring The role oof publicists and booking agents in building your career A little about Ben: With the forthcoming 2020 release of his beautiful third album, Searching For the Stranger, Ben Kunder expands his ability to soundtrack both the ordinary and the extraordinary in luminous detail. Major tours behind 2018’s acclaimed Better Human and 2015’s Golden — buoyed by marquee guests like Carleigh Aikins, Oh Susanna, Jim Guthrie, Wintersleep’s Loel Campbell and Arkells Anthony Carone and Tim Oxford — consolidated his worldwide fan base while establishing the Toronto singer/songwriter as a consistently electrifying performer. Kunder crafts intricate Indie-Folk that's hugely accessible, relatable, and almost ridiculously melodic. Follow Ben! On Sound of Gaming we celebrate the greatest music from the best video games, but what about the almost hits? The should've-beens? The has-beens? What happens to the music when a game gets cancelled, a character is changed or a game is taken off the shelves? Today Sound of Gaming is dedicated to Lost Masterpieces - music that could have been heard by millions of players but instead has been lost to the whims of history and the creative process, with never before heard gems from composers like Joris de Man, The Flight and Jim Guthrie. The BAFTA winning composer Austin Wintory - well known for his work on games like Journey, Abzu and the Banner Saga - talks to Jessica today not about his hits, but about the 'ones that got away', music he's written for pitches that didn't make it and games that didn't see the light of day. Plus music from games such as Alien: Isolation, Chrono Trigger and Borderlands 3 that didn't find its way into the game, plus a lost gem of a game score by composer Michael Nyman and other treats you just don't hear enough. Austin Wintory - Crude Gum Joris de Man - Knights (unreleased) Raison Varner - General Traunt Sketch (Borderlands 3 - unreleased) Austin Wintory- Death Arisen Austin Wintory - Squares Austin Wintory - A Guessing Game Austin Wintory - Oases Michael Nyman - Enemy Zero (Enemy Zero) The Flight - The Space Jockey (Alien Isolation - unreleased) Yasunori Mitsuda - The Singing Mountain (Chrono Trigger - unreleased) Frank Ilfman - Akiro (Akiro - unreleased) Chris Hülsbeck - The Great Giana Sisters Suite (excerpt) Austin Wintory - Whiskers and Beams Austin Wintory - The Call (Journey) Hitoshi Sakimoto - Staff Roll (Vagrant Story) Jim Guthrie - You, Me and the Sun Swallowing Sea (Below - unreleased) King George's Hall, Blackburn Presented by Tom McKinney

Jesse Ruddock is a talented writer, photographer, and musician currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Ruddock graduated from Harvard cum laude, after attending the university on an ice hockey scholarship. She was a hotshot goalie who got into hip-hop and underground rock thanks to Jim Guthrie and pals like Noah23 and Livestock. She’s made her own music under monikers like Koko Bonaparte and Koko Blue and her writing and photography has appeared in The New Yorker, BOMB Magazine, and Vice. In February 2017, Coach House Books published her debut novel; it’s called Shot-Blue and has received raves from the New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews among others. Jesse and I caught up at the CFRU studios recently when she was home in Guelph and she surprised me with stories about her past life as a hockey goalie, her writing influences, the power of her peers in Guelph, her remarkably talented family, and where her novel Shot-Blue may have come from. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, and Planet Bean Coffee.
