This week on The Politics Hour, Metro General Randy Clarke took Kojo, Tom, and listeners on a ride through Metro's upcoming budget decisions, why he'd like to see a regional tax, and the significance of Metro teaming up with COG. Clarke said he's very happy overall that D.C., Maryland, and Virginia are all stepping up with additional funding for Metro. Because of that, Metro will be able to avoid some of the more drastic service cuts first proposed in December. He isn't surprised by the continued debate in Virginia about how much money the state will provide instead of local jurisdictions. However, Clarke said this conversation is more about “how the bill is paid” than whether Metro will be adequately funded. Earlier in the week, Metro and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) announced a partnership aimed at addressing some of the region's transportation issues. The region has multiple locally run transportation systems, including Alexandria's DASH bus and the Ride On in Montgomery County, all with different fares and systems. One of the main goals of the partnership, he said, is to simplify this. “Only people in government care about jurisdictions. Everyone else lives their life, right,” Clarke said. “They might live in Montgomery County or take their kids to a soccer game in Alexandria or live in Fairfax and they work in Downtown D.C. We've got to figure out how people can move without worrying about different signs or fare payments and all the other stuff. Make it easy for people.” Jahd Khalil from Virginia Public Media also joined the show to explain how Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin's reworked budget no longer has any tax cuts or a sales tax hike. Khalil said it definitely appears like Youngkin is attempting to work with the Democratically-controlled General Assembly, but recent actions may still make that difficult. The Virginia General Assembly will reconvene next week to consider the governor's reworked budget. Khalil said the legislature could reject the proposal and, if that does happen, “it's definitely a possibility” Youngkin could veto the entire budget. That would be nearly unprecedented. Doug Cornfield was a multi-sport athlete in high school and college who focused on Basketball and Track through his first year at Taylor University. After a National Championship in the 800m his freshman year at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) Track & Field Championships, Doug focused his full attention to running. Those efforts led to a full scholarship transfer to the University of Georgia (UGA) where he finished as a top contender in the SEC. Doug is still listed on several top ten performances of all time at his alma-mater UGA for both indoor and outdoor Track & Field. During his time at UGA Doug was a member of the Georgia All-State Cross Country Team. He also toured Europe in 1987 racing for Athletes in Action. Races are not all that Doug won. He became a top sales representative for a fast growing company now known as NEST Entertainment. This led to an appointment as the East Coast Regional Vice President in 1992. Sales for the company grew from $500,000 per year to a cash flow of $500,000 per week in just three years. In the 1990s, Doug went on to work for several other companies as a sales consultant to test new products. In March of 2000 Doug joined Merrill Lynch moving to Corning, NY. Doug returned to his entrepreneurial roots in 2009 when, during his time with Merrill Lynch, Doug met Dave Clark, the only professional baseball player to pitch from crutches. Doug's son, Gideon, was born with neither arm developed and one leg shorter than the other and Doug was interested in meeting Dave to learn what Dave's parents did and how they treated him as a child. Dave became both client and friend giving Doug a chance to learn more about this incredible man's journey. Doug convinced Dave to partner and promote his amazing life's story. As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week's show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. Dustin Riechmann is a serial entrepreneur and online marketing expert.He specializes in helping mission-driven solopreneurs add 6 figures to their bottom line by telling the right stories on the right podcasts. Everything he teaches is based on real-world experience from his clients and his own successful online businesses. Quote #1 I had been listening to podcasts for many years and enjoyed it. It just never really occurred to me that I could be a guest. I didn't know, like, how does that even work? Yeah. So I just decided to give it a shot. So I found a show that I thought our story would be particularly timely for, because it was about side hustles. And so I crafted this pitch and I crafted it around the idea that I partnered with a local business, brought a product online and was able to sell it online, which was a big topic at the time because all the local businesses were suffering and recorded it, and it went really well. I sold some meat sticks, which is like the whole reason I got on there. Quote #2 So then I found another and another, and it turns out like the first 12 shows that I reached out to all said, yes, and they weren't small shows, you know, they were, they were good shows. And I realized I had a knack for it basically, you know, I'd been doing engineering for years, but in that role, I actually acted more like an attorney in a lot of ways, a lot of persuasive writing and, and I knew copywriting from my digital marketing days. And I just found that. This was a great marriage of those skills to get on the shows, and I was pretty rough as an interviewer at first, but through repetition, I got better at that too. Quote #3 And it was just completely inbound. So I didn't have a brand, or a website. I'd never called myself a coach or anything, until 2021 people started reaching out to me and they started paying me for one on one coaching, just like come up with a 90 day marketing plan with podcast guesting as like the central part of it and I started doing that. And so I did that for about 20 individuals that transitioned into small groups. And now like the main thing I do is actually run a mastermind program, and I need a mastermind that uses podcast as the main marketing vehicle. But to your point, that's a great foundation, but it can be extremely time consuming if you're trying to do it all yourself. So we did a development workshop called at Pegasus Play Lab, the University of Central Florida. Cool, right? UCF. Great people there. Julia, and we got it on its feet. Quote#2 When I was a kid growing up on Long Island, New York, I met folks that I graduated high school with. And many of them said, I didn't even know you could talk because I was just a shy kid. For me, if I was able to find a cave and live in that cave for the rest of my life at that time, I would have been very happy. However, higher powers had other, things on their mind for me in my life. But growing up as a kid, I was always fascinated with radio broadcasting, but I never knew how I was going to get into it. But I ended up in radio broadcasting. I ended up as a trainer while I was in the military. Quote #3 Knowing the audience and being able to speak to that audience and making your content relevant to your audience is number one. Number two is to incorporate stories. Many times people will be just giving data, all this data that they're just vomiting to their, to their audience. Tell us some stories. Give us some. Because we, as an audience, we wanna, we want to get those pictures with words in our head. We want to be emotionally connected to that content. So, know your audience, tell stories, and number three that gets missed all the time is to have a conclusion. People will get to the end of their presentation and say, Alright, that's it, I'm outta here. Having 5 children does not stop her from accomplishing her mission in life, "To Serve" Quote #1 I've been an entrepreneur since I was a kid, and I've been selling things since I've been a kid. You know, starting out with selling home baked cookies or Girl Scout cookies or, you know, I have all kinds of things that I did. And as a kid, it's way easier. But as I grew up into an adult and got into adult business, it was harder, you know, it wasn't as cute. I wasn't selling something quite as appetizing as cookies. What I really learned very early on is that one, I cared very much for the people that I was connecting with. I wanted that to be a relationship that was mutually beneficial. It wasn't just about me pitching something to them for my own gain. Quote #2 I'm really good at asking lots of questions because I really want to know all about the person I'm meeting, and what I really found was when I focus on the other person, when I, looked at what their goals, dreams, hopes, passions are, I could figure out ways to support them and that creates, A social capital of sorts between us that allows me then later on when I do need something, because you know, at times I need stuff too. Quote #3 Well, the thing that I often say to them is, do you feel like your sales process is either not in alignment with your values? And, or often times it's not getting the results you want, that's the practical side of it. What I'm able to do though, is I come with an outside set of eyes, you know, business, the business owner and their team are entrenched in the day to day stuff of their business. And actually I found myself in a marriage and family degree program at college because I got a full ride scholarship to this amazing university that didn't have an interior design or architecture program. So I went with my gut. We went to the university, found myself studying the family. And I realized that there's not a lot of research about how the family uses their space. There's a lot of research about how schools use space, how prisons use space, how hospitals use space. But we don't really talk about how houses or our homes, right, where we grow and develop and have our most sacred connection, and how our house can facilitate that."
