If you aren't listening on Patreon, you probably should be.The group talks about how often and when to say no. Continuing our new run of quarterly new music updates is our first episode for 2025, and it's a truly notable start. We have a range of new music today, from well composed soundtracks that play homage to earlier console generations to new projects from popular Minecraft composer C418. We also continue to take our definition of music from a certain timeframe liberally and even have music for a game that doesn't exist (anymore). May these episodes help you learn more about new game music releases, and we'll be ready for more next quarter!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff; Edited by Mike SalbatoLinks for this episodeExtremely OK Games: Final Earthblade UpdateTracklist0:04:58 - ‌Batten Down the Hatches (Winifred Phillips) - Flint: Treasure of Oblivion0:12:08 - Child of the Earth (Lena Raine) - Earthblade ~ Across the Bounds of Fate0:23:28 - ‌Acoustic: Main Theme of FFVII - Battle Edit (Nobuo Uematsu, arr. It's a question that crops up a lot: how do musicians move into video game soundtracking?Lena Raine is one of the most respected game composers on the circuit, capturing the imagination of millions with her work for Minecraft and Celeste, one of the key indie games of the last decade.Often with No Tags, we try to focus on people who haven't had their story adequately told. That's not the case with Lena. She's given many interviews, and she's always an excellent subject. But we wanted to ask some practical questions: just how does a musician enter the world of video games? And what do they need to know about pitching, contracts, copyright and the difference in process between releasing recorded music and working for video games? It's an interview of two halves: the first serves as a practical resource for musicians, but in classic No Tags style, the second half goes somewhere else entirely, with Lena on fine form tackling Gamergate, the evolution of the modern internet (not familiar with the theory of the Cozy Web? You soon will be) and the sale of Bandcamp. She saves her most righteous response for the coming of AI, though – that's worth the price of admission alone. Thanks for listening to No Tags. Welcome to Moonglow Bay2. Goto Tech3. With Us Forever The Sausage Factory 371 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.

Hiii listeners! We're back from our summer vacation and ooh ooh OOH it's just so damn hot that we needed to cool ourselves off with a nice little retreat to the snowy mountains of... CELESTE!This 2018 indie platformer is considered by many (ourselves included) to be a modern masterpiece. It's themes of self-reflection, anxiety, and perseverance made for a story that queer and trans gamers saw their own journeys reflected in. We talk about why that is, and how the game retroactively served as a vehicle for lead developer Maddy Thorson's own exploration of their gender identity. We also catch up on the summer bops we've been bumping, anime we (Laurence) have been watching, and we discuss the current conversation about pervasive sexism and working conditions in the video game industry, particularly in light of the recent sexual harassment lawsuit levied at gaming giant Activision Blizzard. It's a packed ep! And we're incredibly glad to be back. In a universe where Wielders paint their worlds to keep them colorful, Picnic Province has suddenly become black and white and Chicory, its Wielder, has vanished! Her housekeeper picks up Chicory's world-painting brush and decides to go on a quest to find her. That's how the adventure, Chicory: A Colorful Tale begins. Soundtrack composer Lena Raine says she was all in as soon as the devleoper, Greg Lobenov, showed her the very earliest ideas for a game which was not more than a dog who paints. Although the premise of Chicory: A Colorful Tale seems simple, the game explores some deeper issues, such as imposter syndrome and the mixed feelings about assuming a role you might not feel ready to take on. Lena says writing the music for the bosses who confront the player with these challenges was a chance to work with a different musical style than the rest of the game. Lena says she's grateful to Greg and the tiny team who made Chicory for letting her explore the kind of music she's always

In this launch title created by Sumo Digital for Sony's Play Station 5, Sackboy sets off on a quest to rescue his friends who have been kidnapped by the evil Vex and forced to work on his diabolical Topsy-Turver. Sumo Digital Audio Director and composer Jay Waters and composer Joe Thwaites say the huge scope of the game and the all-star line-up of the other composers who contributed made this a really enjoyable project. Jay and Music Director James Marshall worked with a roster of incredible media composers, including Lena Raine, Brian D'Oliveira, Winifed Phillips, Nick Foster and Jim Fowler. Each of them had their own part of the world in the game to create a musical signature; Winifred wrote music for the bubbly, underwater levels, and Brian for the Amazon region, for example. This gave the composers freedom to create their own sound within the larger world. Sackboy, A Big Adventure has been nominated by the

Jessica Curry celebrates the dazzling musical world of indie games. Most people have heard of the titans of video games - like FIFA, Mario, Call of Duty or Fortnite - but there's also a thriving indie scene pushing the boundaries of what games and their soundtracks can be. For an indie, no adventure is too small, too silly, too bizarre or too bittersweet - and often they dive deeper than huge games into subjects such as grief, love, illness and what it means to be human. Indie soundtracks then can be some of the most experimental music in the whole genre - from tender chamber music to full on electronic freak outs - Jessica plays some of her favourites. Plus Jessica talks to composer Lena Raine, whose BAFTA nominated music for the breakout indie hit Celeste has been one of the most talked about scores of recent years. Welcome, listeners! Be you girl or shadow-girl, or bear or bird, you are all invited to our latest endeavor here at Video Game Grooves! Sometimes you climb a mountain, sometimes you traverse a boingy swamp. Sometimes you do a podcast. We did that one. This week we make our acquaintance with brand new record label Debug Records (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) and meet its owner Caleb Denney. Caleb is joined by warrior-poet-badass Erich Beckmann, daddy to the label's first release Mother Fucking Earthbound, coming soon to a turntable very near you! Our features this week are fresh and exciting, as we scale the mountain of sound that is Celeste, from Ship to Shore Media. The Lena Raine score has garnered praise and awards since its release in 2018, and Erich takes point to tell us about his love for the game's technical-yet-poignant music and message. We then climb in Caleb's backpack for a grand tour of Banjo-Kazooie from iam8bit. As we gallop along, we keep our bulbous eyeballs peeled and appreciate Grant Kirkhope's dynamic and thematically-varied composition, and genius use of mouth-harp. Our second segment is filled with all the news you can use, keeping you apprised of all that discretionary spending that you're missing out on! A few other news blurbs arise, and we tackle those too. Finally, we sit down (we stood up at some point) and talk to Caleb and Erich about the initial outing from Debug, and we field your questions for the duo about the label, this release, and its influences and origins! We’re finally here at the end of the longest year in the history of long, bad years. We barely played any games this year, so pulling together our favorite songs was a mighty task, but we weren’t going to let you walk away empty-handed. Also, let’s be real, it’s way harder to find ten good games than games with good music. Good game music is easy. You here me, Capcom?? EASY! THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR MEGA MAN TO SOUND LIKE THIS!*ahem*Please enjoy these hours of music and best of lists, and I hope everyone has a great end to the year from hell. May the hell be lessened and the games better in 2019. Thanks everyone, for everything.A few notes: you can find our episode for the music from games we played for the first six months of the year on Abnormal Mapping 79. Through the combined miracles of technology, camaraderie, and good old fashioned all-american gumption the Dome and Bedlam Podcast has bridged both time and space, as Nathan, David, and Scott are joined by Matt Ellis FROM THE FUTURE. Matt talks labor, love, labor, and why the heck no one will sign Lance Lynn. Additionally we take your twitter questions, a fight breaks out over the right time of year to eat a hot dog, and we get lost in Dan Altavilla's Baby Blues. As a wise man once said, beep bop boop good to be back. (Music Credits: John Goodman, END, Lena Raine)
