It's not often an artist establishes themselves so eloquently with the launch of their debut EP,but in the case of Brisbane-born, Melbourne-based future soul artist Tiana Khasi, this wasprecisely achieved with the release of her 2019's Meghalaya –a powerful statement of intentthat honours her Samoan and Indian heritage. A trained vocalist whose voice has been described ‘as venomous as it is honey-sweet', Tiana'smusic pays homage to her heritage while exploring a forward-thinking blend of soul ,jazz and pop. In the leadup to WOMADelaide festival I chat with Tiana Khasi about Meghalaya, the location in which her debut EP was named after. We discussed, her latest track Louka Manuka and the serenity of writing in nature and Badgalriri's half time show. 

It's rare that a musician makes such a mark with her first EP that Rolling Stone US magazine raves and international world music festivals beckon for you to play. But that's exactly what has happened for Brisbane born and Melbourne based artist Tiana Khasi, whose eloquent and distinctive music will grace the WOMADelaide stage this weekend. Her debut EP, Meghalaya – titled for Meghalaya, India, the land of the Khasi tribe whose name she proudly bears – is a testament to the power of her storytelling and ability to weave themes of family, self-empowerment and identity into the contemporary vernacular of Australian music.  And as she tells us on Streets of Your Town, Tiana credits finding her voice at such a young age to her life's journey honouring her Samoan and Indian heritage. This combination of influences makes for a unique sound that was further honed from expert teaching at Brisbane's Conservatorium. Middle Name Dance Band: Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 30 November 2019 Middle Name Dance Band are a trio of established Brisbane musicians spanning many genres but brought together by a love of jamming and making people move their butts. The players are Sam Pogglioli, better known as producer and DJ Sampology, Megan Christensen, a.k.a. KUZKO, also from the band Pink Matter, and Sam Maguire, a.k.a. producer and DJ Sam Stosuur, who has also played bass for Astro Travelers and Tiana Khasi. The three started jamming together in early 2018 and at first only intended to release one EP together, but the positive response to their live shows and recordings led to them staying together. Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol 1 was released in 2018, followed by Vol 2 in 2020.
