Kerry take home the Sam Maguire on this episode of Gift Grub! And everyone has something to say about it!
It was a weekend full of excitement for the Kerry football team as the Kingdom took home their 39th All Ireland Football championship. Jack O'Connor led his team to a 1-26 to 0-19 win over Donegal, making it his fifth Sam Maguire. Elsewhere in sport, the British and Irish Lions narrowly beat Australia after a last minute try from Ireland's Hugo Keenan and England's Lionesses were crowned back to back champions at the Women's Euro finals last night. Tommy Rooney, Off the Ball's GAA correspondent and Colm Boohig, Broadcaster with Off the Ball joined Pat Kenny to look back on the weekend's sporting action.

As the Kerry team win yet another GAA All Ireland final, beating champions over Meath, Donegal, on the weekend of the Lughnasa festival in Cloghane and Brandon, I share the story of Sam Maguire and the contribution he made to Ireland's 1916 Rising and ultimate semi-independence, his relationship with the "Big Fella" Michael Collins, and why Ireland's most prestigious Gaelic football trophy is named in his honour, despite his home county of Cork not winning it the year it was first presented. I also share a connection I made between Saint James, or Santiago de Compostela, the landing zone of Camino de Santiago pilgrims, Ireland's God of Light Lú, Croagh Patrick, and the Catholic Church. Substack coming soon. Stay tuned.Credits: https://crokepark.ie/tours/gaa-museum/exhibitions/sam-maguirehttps://www.westkerrylive.ie/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this final part of our Road To Croke Park series, the Football Championship reaches the knockout phase and we find out who will battle it out for Sam Maguire on Sunday.
Donegal take on Kerry in this weekend's All Ireland Senior Football Final.Donegal haven't won the all-Ireland since 2012, and Kerry took home the Sam Maguire in 2022…But, who will claim the silverware on Sunday?Joining Andrea to discuss is Eamon McGee, 2012 All-Ireland winner with Donegal, Jack O'Shea, member of the Kerry Senior Football Team from 1976 until 1992, Tony Boyle, former Donegal Player, Mortimer Murphy, Freelance Sports journalist, Broadcaster, GAA Podcaster and Mary Coughlan, Chair of Donegal County Board and former Tánaiste.
The buildup to All-Irelands inevitably involve memories of previous finals and those no longer with us. In 1997, Liam Higgins and Weeshie Fogarty – both, alas, have passed on – commentated for Radio Kerry on the Kingdom’s victory over Mayo. Former Radio Kerry broadcaster Ted Creedon contacted us about a brilliant article that Liam wrote 40 years ago. At the time, Ted was editor of a youth club magazine called Ógra an Daingin. He asked Liam to write about Sam Maguire, after whom the All-Ireland senior football cup is named.
Hear from Jim McGuinness, Paddy McBrearty & Robbie Brennan in the immediate aftermath of Donegal's emphatic All-Ireland semi-final victory over Meath to setup a mouth-watering clash between themselves & Kerry in a battle for the Sam Maguire trophy!
Limerick take on Kildare for a chance to book their place in next season's Sam Maguire cup, plus a shot to win their first non-league silverware since the 19th century.Limerick vice-captain Barry Coleman, midfielder Tommie Childs and head coach Micheál Cahill caught up with Off The Ball GAA correspondent Tommy Rooney ahead of the final.
Clare's Brian McNamara says Louth's greater ability to punish mistakes was the difference between the sides in their crucial knockout tie in the All Ireland Football Championship. The Leinster Champions inflicted a third defeat of the Sam Maguire series on Peter Keane's side, leaving them bottom of Group 3 and eliminated from the championship. Clare trailed by eight points at the break, before goals from Aaron Griffin and Rory McMahon helped bring the deficit to as little as two in the closing stages. The Cooraclare clubman says at the very least, they were focused on delivering a good performance to round off the year.
It's claimed Clare need to prepared to withstand constant pressure and be wary of retribution in their do or die clash with Louth this weekend. The Banner round off their Sam Maguire group stage campaign on Sunday with a trip to Laois Hire O'Moore Park in Portlaoise to face the Leinster Champions, with the winners progressing to an All Ireland preliminary quarter final. Peter Keane's side delivered a strong performance in their Round 2 defeat to Monaghan in Clones, kicking 14 first half points including four two-pointers, while Cillian Brennan and Cillian Rouine are hoped to return to bolster the backline. Clare FM analyst Paudie Carmody says if the defence can hold firm, the firepower is there to punish Louth. Throw in on Sunday is at 2pm, with commentary on Clare FM with Ennis Home Furniture Quinn road Business Park, Ennis and Jones's Supervalu Milltown
Clare boss Peter Keane says there's plenty of positives to take from his side's performance against Monaghan despite the result not going their way. A straight knockout game against Louth now awaits Clare in the final game after the hosts came from behind to condemn The Banner to a second defeat of the Sam Maguire series on a score of 1-25 to 1-16. A red hot first half saw Clare take a 14 points to seven lead into half time, with four two pointers registered in the opening period. Keane says its was an admirable performance given the tough lead up to the game.
Following their fourth consecutive Connacht senior football championship victory, Galway begin their quest for Sam Maguire this Saturday (17th May 2025) when they host Dublin in the opening game of the round-robin series. Padraic Joyce's charges are in a difficult group that also includes Armagh and Derry and will be determined to repeat last June's stunning quarter-final victory over the Metropolitians. Former Galway captain Barry Brennan played in the 1983 All-Ireland Final against Dublin and also won five Connacht championships between 1982 and 1987. The two-time county senior championship winner with St. Grellan's looked ahead to the game with Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Throw-in at Pearse Stadium on Saturday is 5pm and we'll have LIVE coverage on Galway Bay FM. The game is preceded by the Leinster senior hurling championship clash between Galway and Antrim at 2.30pm.

Armagh win the All Ireland football final for the first time in 22 years. It couldn't have been any tighter after they beat Galway by one point. It's only the second time in their history that they have won the Sam Maguire. But not everyone is happy, some unionists have criticised the police for appearing to take part in celebrations following Armagh's victory. Videos appear to show officers in police vehicles waving flags and sounding their sirens. TUV leader Jim Allister says he has contacted the police ombudsman. Did the PSNI over step the mark? Or should the PSNI be grateful to have officers building relationships with the locals?
