It's a good idea to check in with your favorite works of art as you get older. You may find that you have outgrown certain albums, or that they haven't aged well. Maybe the meaning will deepen over time, as certain aspects of a record mean something different as you move through life with a different perspective. That is the goal with our occasional retrospective episodes... we take a look back at records after 30 years and see what we make of them as adults. This week we are apply9ng that lens to Gravediggaz masterpiece, the misunderstood 6 Feet Deep. DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are joined by collaborator Cutso to dissect the album that kicked off the horrorcore movement accidentally. 6 Feet Deep (known by a title we're not at liberty to type in Europe) is one of Prince Paul's masterworks, a theme album about resurrecting rappers who suffered from mismanagement by adopting horror film atmospherics, wild sing song flows, and razor sharp lyrics from his collaborators. Of course, we all know that RZA would go on to change the sound and business environment of hip-hop with Wu-Tang, but fellow Diggaz Frukwan and Too Poetic were perhaps the group members most committed to the bit. The resulting album is one of the most unique in the genre and we're happy to detail why we feel that way. For further discussion on this topic please check out DBRP 77 which contains an interview with Frukwan and any of our previous episodes with Prince Paul interviews as well. This episode was produced by Paolo "Cutso" Bello and we deeply appreciate his involvement. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Episode art by David Ma. Bugs, babbling brook, overnight in the woods ambience. Quiet y'all, the summertime bugs have something to say. This recording begins just before midnight and continues until about 4 a.m. (I wanted to get in the less-trafficked hours because there was a US Highway a few miles away and a dirt road close by. You will hear some occasional traffic, but not so much that it's annoying.) So get "lost in the woods" like De La Soul did nearly 30 years ago on their opus Buhloone Mindstate. Except in these woods, you won't find Shortie No Mass, Prince Paul, Pos, Mase, or Dave — just a bunch of bugs. And I'm pretty sure a fox or some other wild canine will show up. Cover photo by Kendal Hoopes.

While all of hip hop prizes authenticity, as Van Lathan put it in Filthy Slime Pt 1: “In street rap authenticity is more important than skill”. Today we dive into the ways that this genre's prizing of authenticity has evolved to a point where some rappers aren't just merely making artful commentary or provocations about gang life, but are using their lyrics to document and at times admit their involvement in serious crimes, including murder. Here in the second installment of our deep dive into rap on trial, our guests Van Lathan and producer 4-IZE help us examine this cultural debate in the larger context of an evolution happening right now in rap music. We look at the role played by everything from social media to record labels, and try to grapple with what this means not only for Young Thug's RICO case but for the future of artists living in high crime neighborhoods. Special thanks to Prince Paul, Jason Kramer, Bill Donahoe, Kmele Foster, 4-IZE, Megan Phelps-Roper, and Van Lathan. Music has been a feature of American culture wars since at least the time of Elvis Presley's gyrating dance moves on The Ed Sullivan show in 1956. But amidst all the moral panics about hip-shaking and backmasking, there is a legitimate and fascinating question about the role and influence that popular music plays on human behavior and on society more broadly.  Today, we are publishing the first episode in our breakdown of the debate around Rap on Trial and what it says (and misses) about the role of music in culture. We begin in 1985 with Tipper Gore's fight against Prince and the obscenity of 80's rock music, then dive deep into the rapper Young Thug's current RICO case in Atlanta Georgia and other cases where music is being brought into criminal trials. Our goal, as always, is to try and understand this story and everyone involved in the best faith possible. Which, yes, means we are going to steel-man Tipper Gore, Young Thug and T.I. all in the same story. Dave and Milt dissect the Billboard Top 10 albums, including 'iconic' works such as 'The Final Countdown' by Europe, 'Graceland' by Paul Simon, 'Tango in the Night' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Sign o' the Times' by Prince, 'Licensed to Ill' by the Beastie Boys, 'Slippery When Wet' by Bon Jovi, and 'The Joshua Tree' by U2. The discussion not only delves into the background and the stories behind these albums but also addresses broader themes like cultural appropriation, the effect of MTV, and the transition in sound for bands like Bon Jovi. Can you tell this summary was written by AI? So what. I'm trying to get this 2 hour+ podcast posted. Gimme a break. Anyway, by combining personal anecdotes, insights into the controversies of the time such as the apartheid-era South Africa visit by Paul Simon for 'Graceland', and listener interactions, the episode presents a nostalgic and insightful review of 1987 as a pivotal year in music history. Here are the topics covered. For Pos and his parents, crack was literally in the house just as it was in many houses and many families during the crack era. Crack decimated many families and De La Soul made one of the most powerful songs about all that. In this episode we talk about how crack destroyed families and what went into the making of "My Brother's A Basehead.” We talk to Prince Paul, De La Soul's producer who's sometimes called the 4th member of the group. We also talk about a very different song about crack users, Public Enemy's Night of the Living Baseheads, which looked down on people who used crack while one of the members of PE was a crack addict. PE's producer Hank Shocklee joins us for that.     Guests: Prince Paul, Producer - De La Soul is Dead Hank Shocklee, Producer - Public Enemy Credits: De La Soul - My Brothers a Basehead Writer: Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove, Prince Paul, Maseo, Clint Ballard Jr. & Robby Krieger Label: Tommy Boy Records Publisher: Tee Girl Music, MCA Music, Shapiro Bernstein & Doors Music Co. De La Soul has one of the best catalogs in the history of hip hop, but due to legal problems with Tommy Boy, the majority of it's been unavailable on streaming services. In late 2021, the group members announced that the catalog would finally be coming to streaming, but it took a year and a half for it to come to pass. Today's the day!! We'll learn about all the crucial elements that producer Prince Paul brought to the table, the mid-'60s pop band that set the sample wars in motion, and the rap album mainstay that was both invented and perfected on their debut…not to mention Prince Paul's one-of-a-kind hip-hopera! It's difficult to overstate the impact De La Soul has had on this podcast. Simply stated De Le raised us. The three brothers from Long Island and their left of center aesthetic helped shaped who we are as rap fans and human beings. Our original artwork was a homage to their second album De La Soul is Dead. We got the late great Don Newkirk, who voiced the skits on 3ft High and Rising, to be a part of our intro. Our first guest on the podcast was legendary producer Prince Paul who played a huge role in the first three De La Soul albums. All of this to say De La is a part of us. So of course we were devastated to hear Trugoy's recent passing. Dave's death coming right as De La's music comes to streaming feel particularly cruel. On this week's episode we do our best to honor the legacy of Plug 2 and give new listeners a guide to De La Soul's first four albums. How do the Dad Bods rate each of these masterworks? How have the albums aged? These questions and many more will be answered during this special episode. That in an of itself would be one hell of an episode but we were also fortunate to get De La Soul's first A&R Dante Ross to join us and talk about the early days of the group and who Dove was as a person. Part 2 – Derek Prince Derek was born into a military family in Bangalore, India in 1915.  At the age of 13, Derek won a scholarship to the prestigious Eton College, England where he studied Greek and Latin.  From Eton, he progressed to Cambridge University where he furthered his understanding of languages, graduating with first-class honours in Classical Tripos (a course studying Greek and Latin languages, culture, and history).  Academically, Derek Prince was a brilliant man, but if there's one thing I've learned over time it's this; brilliance in one area of expertise does not make you brilliant in every field of expertise.  No one can question the academic background of Dr. Derek Prince, but when it comes to his revelations and ideas on demonology, it is shocking!  So much of what Dr. Prince has to say about this topic is purely anecdotal, it is his experiences, his encounters.  When he does turn to the text of Scripture in an effort to support what he is saying, his exegesis at the best of times leaves little to be desired.  In this teaching, I don't want so much to examine the teachings of Derek Prince as it relates to deliverance but to look at Derek Prince the man, and the personal journey which led him into the deliverance ministry. Burning Ambulance Podcast

I have said two things all season long. The first is that we're going to be exploring a single topic for ten episodes, and that topic is fusion. But the second thing I've been saying is that what I'm talking about when I say the word fusion isn't a style or a genre, but a state of mind. It's not what you play, it's how you approach music-making.In previous episodes, we've talked about what people typically think of as fusion, which drummer Lenny White, who appeared in episode two of this series, prefers to call jazz-rock. That's the version that more or less starts with Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and Tony Williams' Lifetime and branches out to include Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever and Weather Report. But my version of that continuum also includes early Seventies Santana, it includes the Fania All Stars collaborating with Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham, it includes adventurous funk and R&B fusion, like P-Funk and Earth, Wind & Fire and the Ohio Players and Slave, and it includes jazz-funk acts like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and George Duke.Vernon Reid is a guitarist who was born in England but grew up in New York. He's best known as the leader of Living Colour, and one of the co-founders of the Black Rock Coalition along with the late writer Greg Tate, but he's got a long and varied discography that encompasses solo material, duo and trio work with other guitarists like Bill Frisell, David Torn and Elliot Sharp, and guest appearances with a ton of groups from Public Enemy to the Rollins Band, Mick Jagger, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Santana, and many, many more. His solo album Mistaken Identity from 1996 is the only album to carry co-producer credits from Prince Paul and Teo Macero. Back in 2012, he made an album with a group called Spectrum Road which featured John Medeski on keyboards, Jack Bruce on bass, and Cindy Blackman Santana on drums — it was conceptually a tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime, but it's very much its own thing as well, so definitely check that out.Reid got his start, though, with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's band the Decoding Society. He played guitar, banjo, and guitar synth with that group, which had two bassists: Melvin Gibbs, who was on this podcast a couple of years ago, and Reverend Bruce Johnson, and then some horn players, mostly Zane Massey on saxophones and Henry Scott on trumpet. It's high-energy music that's also really melodic in a kind of post-Prime Time way — jazz, funk, rock, Texas blues and West African music all swirled together and thrown straight at your face at a hundred miles an hour. Their albums Nasty, Street Priest, Mandance, Barbeque Dog, Montreux Jazz Festival and Earned Dreams are all incredible. They're all out of print right now, too, but some of them are on streaming services, so dig up whatever you can. Reid has a new record out with the group Free Form Funky Freqs, a trio with bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who's also been on this podcast before, and drummer Calvin Weston, and as he explains in this conversation, it's full-on improv, starting from zero every time they play together, and because it's so limited – no rehearsals, no soundchecks with all three members – they know exactly how many times they've played together. The album represents their 73rd encounter. It's called Hymn Of The 3rd Galaxy, sort of a tribute to Return To Forever there, who had an album called Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy, and you'll hear a little bit of the music late in the podcast. I think you'll really enjoy this episode. I've been a fan of Vernon Reid's music for about 35 years. The first Living Colour album came out when I was in high school, and I saw them play on the first Lollapalooza festival in the summer of 1991. And I interviewed him once before, about 10 years ago, when he was doing a multimedia presentation called Artificial Africa. So in this conversation, we talk about his work with the Decoding Society, about the Free Form Funky Freqs, about the whole wave of guitarists who came up at the same time he did, including Michael Gregory Jackson and Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly and Brandon Ross, as well as older players like James "Blood" Ulmer and Pete Cosey and Sonny Sharrock… we talk about a lot of things, and I'm just gonna end this introduction here, so you can dive in.MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE:Living Colour, “WTFF” (from Stain)Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society, “Iola” (from Mandance)Vernon Reid & Bill Frisell, “Size 10 1/2 Sneaks” (from Smash & Scatteration)Free Form Funky Freqs, “Outer Arm” (from Hymn of the 3rd Galaxy)

Facing an indeterminate period of isolation, Lyrics Born did what any rational person would: he started a podcast. While he's quick to note that the last two years offered a period of reflection and a rare moment to catch his breath during an impressive 25-year career in hip-hop, Mobile Homies was, ultimately, less about working than connecting. The show offered an opportunity to connect with fellow artists and friends during an exceedingly trying time. Conversations became collaborations, resulting in a new album of the same name. The LP finds him collaborating with familiar names like Lateef the Truthspeaker, Prince Paul and Dan the Automater, along with an appearance by the late-emcee – and his longtime friend – Blackalicious' Gift of Gab.
