Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Lager | Brooklyn BreweryBrewed by: Brooklyn Brewery New York, United Statesbrooklynbrewery.com Style: American Amber / Red Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20% Notes / Commercial Description: In the late 1800’s Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the country, home to more than 45 breweries. Lager beer in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites. Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color and displays a firm malt center supported by a refreshing bitterness and floral hop aroma. Caramel malts show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries-old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food. Dry-hopping is largely a British technique, which we’ve used in a Viennese-style beer to create an American original.Toasted Lager | Blue Point Brewing CompanyBrewed by: Blue Point Brewing Company New York, United Statesbluepointbrewing.com Style: American Amber / Red Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50% Notes / Commercial Description: Our flagship and most popular brew, Toasted Lager is the best American amber Lager you’ll ever taste. To back up that claim, we use six different grains to perfect a balanced flavor of malt and hops, and a special proprietary lager yeast to give Toasted Lager an exceptional, long-lasting smooth finish that’s meant to be enjoyed year-round. Pairs perfectly with fresh seafood...or any food for that matter.Lashes Hopbock Lager | Jack's Abby BrewingCraft Beer Storm Podcast with Jack! - Episode 19 - Jack of Jack's Abby Lagers Talks Beer – Check it out!Brewed by: Jack's Abby Brewing Massachusetts, United Statesjacksabbybrewing.com Style: American Amber / Red Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80% Notes / Commercial Description: This Red IPL balances an assertive Munich Malt character with an infusion of Super Styrian, Columbus, and Palisades hops. A few years ago on vacation on Long Island, I stumbled across a few local beers that caught my attention—Toasted Lager and Rastafa Rye were two of them, both beers from Blue Point. After some searching, we found the brewery a road just a short walk from the center of a sleepy town. It was closed that day, so I didn’t get to visit, but the image of that building—a sort of repurposed gas station with an old school dive bar for a tap room—stuck with me.  Shortly after, I started seeing the growth of Toasted Lager as close as Michigan, and the Bluepoint story started to become regional. That little brewery on Long Island had contracted their Lager in upstate New York, like so many growing brands on the east coast. And it was about this time that AB InBev took notice as well, acquiring the brewery in a deal that was largely ignored compared to the uproar that came with some of their other acquisitions. Who was Blue Point? And why did AB want to buy them? Those questions were the common refrain. I’ll admit, other than the regional advantage, it seemed like a curious choice to me at the time, too.  But watching the brand evolve since the acquisition, some themes emerge. The coastal story is more prominent. The connection to the local culinary culture is there. And of course, they had a unique Lager that was already scaling up and reaching new markets. Now? They’re distributing to Chicago for the first time.  In all that change, Blue Point brought on a new brewmaster, a guy who came up through the St. Louis Budweiser brewery, a trained engineer who found his passion for beer. When the opportunity opened up for a role in one of AB's craft breweries, he leapt at the chance.  It’s a career story that can only exist in 2017 with America’s talent pool starting to move back and forth from big and little breweries within the same ownership structure, as each seek out a particular expertise. Whether it be engineering or cultural, both work to define innovation for themselves, and as some talent graduates, along with opportunities for scaling up or down, your focus as a brewer becomes valuable. Interesting times.

We’ve got Mark Burford of Blue Point Brewing Co., John Liegey and Greg Soroski and of Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., Paul Dlugokencky from Blind Bat Brewery, and beer blogger Niko Krommydas. Listen to these Long Islanders’ local beer pride, and the difficulties starting a brewery of any size on Long Island. Tune in to hear about these different brewing companies deal with their brewing waste- spent grain and “gray water”. This episode has been brought to you by GreatBrewers.com. “So as soon as the shotgun goes off at ten thousand feet, I’ve got this ringing and explosion going around my head with the nitrous and everything…and I said to myself, ‘I have to recreate this in a beer.” “Breweries are ‘green’ by nature…everything that goes in, goes out.” — Mark Burford on Beer Sessions Radio “We’re in a space now where we’re able to make the beers we want, we’re making them where we want to make them, and Long Island is the place we choose.” —John Liegey on Beer Sessions Radio
