In today’s episode, I chat with my old friend Jeff Vernon, creator of the Trueform Runner, a treadmill designed to improve running form. Talking to Jeff reminded me of the first time I tried the TrueForm. As I recall, it was a somewhat awkward experience with a crowd of people looking on and making me feel self-conscious about my performance. The TrueForm Runner is self-powered, and it was unlike any treadmill I’d ever used before. You need to run with good form and technique to keep it moving, and it really shows up any quirks in your running style. In fact, it’s been called the ‘best lie detector in the gym’ for its ability to expose the flaws in your form.My second experience of using the TrueForm (in private as part of a running course) was much more satisfactory, and I quickly realized what an important tool it is for improving form and turning people into better runners. I believe that the secret to injury-free running is running well, and the TrueForm teaches you how to run at the right pace and in the correct position. What’s more, it dramatically reduces your likelihood of injury.Support the show (https://www.coachjoedi.com/joe-recommends )

Ben Friberg, extreme endurance paddler talks with Johnny Waite, of Spartan Up Podcast, about how to prepare for the really big, self-supported, expedition-style adventures where you will be truly on your own. An example is Ben's dream crossing - the Bering Strait from Siberia to Alaska, alone on a stand-up paddleboard. Ben Stresses the importance of preparation - doing your research, knowing your gear and your body, and considering how to handle absolute worst-case scenarios, including injuries. He reminds us that when you have enough moving parts to a plan, you have to know that something is going to go wrong! JOhnny'ss favorite part is when Ben talks about the potential beauty of a Painted Corner (when you get yourself in a situation where you have eliminated all other options) and the spiritual epiphany that led to him composing a song by that title.   #1 - How Ben uncovers every stone (e.g., analyzing weather patterns, talking to locals, reading books on the terrain he’s going to traverse) to prepare for a self-supported paddle expedition   #2 - How navigating class-5 rapids equipped Ben for a career in self-supported adventures   #3 - Why crossing the Bering Strait is Ben’s “white whale” of self-supported paddle expeditions.   SPONSOR This episode of Spartan Up! is brought to you by TrueForm Runner.  Save 10% with the code ‘Spartan 10’ at TrueFormRunner.com/Spartan.   SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpShow YouTube: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpYT Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1pYBkk1T684YQg7CmoaAZt FOLLOW SPARTAN UP: Spartan Up on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/spartanuppodcast/ Spartan Up on Twitter https://twitter.com/SpartanUpPod   CREDITS: Producer: Ryan Warner Hosts: Johnny Waite Sr Producer: Marion Abrams   © 2020 Spartan

On Friday, September 28, 2018, John Witzing, Josh Chessman and Brian “Tosh” Chontosh entered individual shipping containers and spent 24 hours running on Trueform Runner human powered treadmills. They did this in the dark, isolated from the outside world. No communication, no music, nothing but their own thoughts and iron will pushing them through. The goal? Run as many miles as possible in 24 hours. Known as the Locked and Loaded 24 Hours of Isolation Challenge, they were doing this in support of mental health, veterans and first responders. Although their individual goals were to run more miles than their competitors, to them, true victory was to help those suffering in silence. We had the opportunity to speak with John, Josh and Tosh at the 2018 Spartan Podfest, just hours before they stepped into the shipping containers to embark upon this extraordinary challenge. In this episode, they talk about the origins of this challenge, how they each trained, the benefits of youth vs experience (and vice versa) and how this turned from a crazy idea that came up on a long road trip to a massive charity fundraising event taking place on the world stage. We give a recap - including an amazing, late-breaking twist - at the end of the episode.
