I’m excited to share the inspirational story of someone who is the epitome of a dream chaser. At age 70, my mother is still going strong, staying busy, and enjoying happiness in her new role. I hope you’ll join us to hear her story. Ammini Aunty (Saramma/Sara) was a nurse in Baltimore for 40 years after her childhood in Kerala and Mumbai, India. During her nursing career, she welcomed every opportunity to teach nurses and nursing students because teaching has always been her natural gift. When her children asked her to capture her knowledge and passion for cooking for them and her grandchildren, Ammini Aunty knew she could do it, thanks to her love for teaching and orienting others. As people watch her cooking show, she encourages them to ask questions so they can learn and be successful in their cooking endeavors. She believes that a love and passion for cooking and learning can help anyone become a great cook. Ammini Aunty says, “If you put your mind to it, you can do it.” With this mantra in mind, “A Pinch of Kerala” was developed to share her love for cooking with others. Why a cooking show? Do you love sharing your passion with others? Ammini Aunty loved teaching other nurses during her long career, but now, in retirement, she loves sharing her passion for cooking with the world. She loves being in the kitchen, always experimenting and trying new things. Chicken, for instance, can be cooked in so many ways, so she loves watching cooking shows, learning new recipes, and trying them out on her family. She cooks for family, friends, and neighbors and anxiously awaits their feedback and approval. It’s her passion for food and cooking that keep her going strong and enjoying life at age 70, even in the middle of a pandemic. Cooking for people is definitely her “love language.” If you ever visit Ammini Aunty’s house, don’t be surprised to be brought into the kitchen to peel ginger or grate coconut because that is just her way of doing things. TWEET: Cooking for people is definitely Ammini Aunty’s love language! @apinchofkerala #chasingdreams “No one is born a chef” How are your kitchen skills? Ammini Aunty is of the firm opinion that anyone can learn to cook. When her daughters were in college, they often brought friends home who wanted to learn to make things like chicken curry or fried rice. Ammini insisted that everything is made from scratch, so she would make them follow each step in cutting up the raw chicken, chopping fresh vegetables, and adding spices. One important step in cooking is tasting as you go, to make sure the flavors are right! She loves imparting her knowledge to others and teaching them to do something new. She says that no one is born a chef, but we can all learn cooking skills by practicing. TWEET: No one is born a chef, but we can all learn cooking skills by practicing. @apinchofkerala #chasingdreams “We are meeting a need” How have you kept busy during the pandemic? It may sound crazy that a 70-year-old retired nurse started a cooking show from her kitchen during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the urging of her daughters, Ammini Aunty began recording cooking videos last April for “A Pinch of Kerala.” She sees the value in what she does in helping people learn to cook and try new things in the kitchen. At the end of 2020, her daughters asked if she wanted to keep doing the show. She replied, “Of course I want to keep going; we are meeting a need that people have.” She knows that her cooking videos are preserving something for the following generations to see. Because of the joy and newfound purpose in her life, Ammini Aunty plans to continue her show, and she has big plans for a handbook and cookbook-- later in 2021! TWEET: Ammini Aunty knows that her cooking videos are preserving something for the following generations to see. @apinchofkerala #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”There is no age limit on chasing your dreams. There may be no one in recent years who has endured more public criticism than today’s guest. He’s taken it in stride to springboard into several career endeavors, maintaining his optimism and happy energy while doing so! After his American Idol audition, William Hung’s rendition of “She Bangs” became famous for all the wrong reasons. Despite the harsh criticism he endured, William persevered, going on to attract a cult following, release three albums, and performing live with Ricky Martin in Las Vegas. A motivational speaker and professional optimist, William is proof that the underdog can succeed when you rise above the haters and choose to be happy. William has appeared on media outlets like FOX, ABC, CNN, and NBC, and in such publications as Rolling Stone magazine, TIME, and USA Today. He’s been a featured guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! And The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Born in Hong Kong, William now resides in Los Angeles and has written a brand new book, Champion by Choice.  Making choices Have you ever been at a crossroads in life? Most of us have been at the point at which we had to make monumental decisions about the future. For William, his decision was to keep going in pursuing his education or to ride the wave of popularity into an entertainment career. With only one life to live, William knew he wanted to live with no regrets at all. He just wanted people to know the truth about him and his story, so the entertainment career was his choice. He went on to do a movie, TV shows, albums, and a book. Even though his career lasted only a few years, he’s happy with his decision and the path it’s brought him down. TWEET: Live a life of no regrets! @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Facing criticism No one likes to be criticized or humiliated, and most of us have never endured either to the extent that William has. He says you have to listen to the voices, but you have to decide who to listen to and whose advice and criticism to discard. Constructive criticism can be used to improve yourself, but random hating is what you have to let go. William learned the important skill of reframing criticism in positive ways to help him move forward. TWEET: Decide who to listen to and who to ignore! @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Lessons from William’s book William’s book focuses on “Three C’s.” The first one is Communication, because everyone loves to be around happy, positive energy. William learned to share his truth in tactful ways as he communicated with others. Another C is Context, which means to look at the big picture and not get bogged down with what’s happening around you right now. The third C is Connection because we all need others to help us. William says that no one can succeed on their own in the long term. Sometimes we tend to hold onto people that we should have let go. William explains how the values and vision we want to create in the world will dictate our dreams.  TWEET: No one can succeed on their own in the long term. @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Take action today. Who doesn’t love a good story? Whether you’re reading, watching, or listening---you can be drawn in before you realize it. My guest today knows the power and magic of storytelling---and he’s sharing some of his secrets with us.   Shannon Cason has told stories all over the country with The Moth, Snap Judgment, and his own podcasts, Homemade Stories, and The Trouble. He is the chief educator for the Brutally Honest Storytelling Workshop Series and has worked with several companies, including WBEZ, WDET, and Spotify. He is originally from Detroit, and he’s gracious enough to come on the show to share his knowledge and experience as a dream chaser.   The magic of storytelling   Can you feel it? I’m talking about the moment when you hear a story, and you know whether someone is “putting on a performance,” using a gimmick, or being honest and open. The first thing Shannon noticed about storytellers is that people are drawn to you when you’re authentic and are yourself, especially when polarizing issues are involved. People simply relate more to truth and real life, and we’re drawn to that in stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the story or the experience. That’s the magic of storytelling.    TWEET: People are drawn to stories because it allows us to see ourselves in the experience. #chasingdreams   Why podcasting?   Have you ever had money that burned a hole in your pocket? Shannon’s first iPhone came as the result of a gambling windfall, and he started listening to podcasts. He had the great idea to mix his love of storytelling with developing his own podcast. He wasn’t satisfied to just “talk,” but wanted full-fledged productions with music and sound effects. Never thinking of this creative endeavor--or any artistic effort--as something that could sustain him financially, he realized that there would be no other job that would bring him as much fulfillment as telling stories and that he could make a living while sharing his stories and chasing his dreams.   TWEET: No other job could bring as much fulfillment as telling stories and chasing his dreams. #chasingdreams   Finding YOUR voice   In storytelling or podcasting, how do you find YOUR voice? You may start out by following and imitating someone else, but Shannon says you have to evolve from that beginning and add your unique style. The beautiful part is when you figure things out and find YOUR voice. You can watch and learn from others, but then put the content through your own filter of truth and authenticity. Find something that isn’t what everyone else is doing.    TWEET: You have to find your own voice. #chasingdreams   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Find an example of who you’d like to be and backtrack that example to see where they started. Seeing where they came from should inspire you.”   See the behind-the-scenes interview with Shannon for more! www.aimeej21.com/youtube     OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE:   [:10] How Shannon and I met in 2016 [1:25] What captured Shannon about storytelling [2:50] How storytelling is brutally honest and refreshing [6:58] Shannon’s storytelling aspirations [9:05] From storytelling to podcasting [11:20] Feeling financial pressures and fears [13:50] If people didn’t pursue their higher calling [17:00] Why we “trap” ourselves into living others’ lifestyles [21:19] “Outside the box” thinking [22:54] How Shannon put his own spin on his work [25:15] How his children are following in his footsteps [29:13] One surprising outcome [31:49] What’s coming up next for Shannon [33:16] ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED:   www.aimeej21.com/episode187   www.aimeej21.com/donate   Consider donating to help the show!   www.shannoncason.com  Find out more about Shannon and Brutally Honest Storytelling

Ep. 141: Abigail Manning - Building Authentic Health to End Abuse in Your Life

Chasing Dreams with Aimee J.

How would you define “abuse”? Unfortunately, such a stigma exists around the idea of abuse, how it occurs, and what it entails, that people are afraid to even talk about it. The truth is that many people have some sort of abuse either in their past or in their present. This conversation is another way to honor and recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. I’m thrilled to bring you another expert, who has amazing things to teach us today! Abigail Manning is creating awareness on authentic health, which prevents and ends ALL forms of abuse. She has done five years of research on abuse and is an Indiana University Communications double major in cognitive, social, and behavioral theories. Combining her academic background with her personal experience with childhood abuse and domestic violence, she provides unique and transformative workshops and speeches that truly empower others. The Mental Health Stigma Do you know someone who suffers from mental illness? As more and more people are affected by backgrounds of abuse and depression, we must realize that ANYONE can suffer from mental illness. Common responses might be, “It doesn’t happen in MY family; it doesn’t happen to strong people; it doesn’t happen to smart people.” Mental health is simply a topic that we don’t talk about. Abigail’s focus is on “authentic health.” Depression can be a product of past abuse and can be linked to other things. Whatever the circumstance, it takes ownership to work past the struggles. Abigail tells us why the words we use really matter in getting the help we need and deserve. TWEET: People choose #addictions to mask their feelings and sometimes see suicide as the only way out. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams Helpful Words What are the words that a struggling person needs to hear? How about “I believe you and I care about you. Let’s get you some qualified help.” Abigail’s advice is to find a trusted person and don’t let yourself become isolated. Use language that feels comfortable to you and don’t be afraid to ask for help and resources. It’s hard to look someone in the eye and reveal that you’re struggling with mental health. Find phone resources that can help. Abigail’s workshops are designed to help any group navigate through all forms of abuse and build a pathway to authentic health. Perpetrators want nothing more than to take your power and control. If you are strong, then no one can take that from you. TWEET: The #1 thing an abuser or perpetrator wants to take from you is CONTROL. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams How to Look for Bullying Behavior Have you seen bullying behavior on social media? It’s all around us in different forms. Abigail has a “purple threads” theory, showing how bullying behavior gets reinforced, either positively or negatively. She teaches people verbal skills so they don’t have to hide. Most people aren’t even aware of what abuse really is, and even though it is complicated, it’s easy to spot if you simplify the definition. Look for a repeated cycle of any psychological, verbal, physical, sexual, or financial abuse. It takes work to strengthen yourself and become aware of abusive behavior, but Abigail can teach you how to spot the red flags in any relationship. TWEET: Don’t go it alone. Find the qualified help you need. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE:   [:22]  The importance of mental health [2:31] The power of words [3:36] How addictions mask our feelings [5:39] Places to find help [7:16] Abigail’s work on a national scale [9:04] Going into schools and workplaces with help for the abused and the abusers [13:04] Is abuse a socioeconomic issue?[ [14:59] Bullying [19:56] What financial abuse is: using money for power and control [21:19] The different forms of abuse [26:19] Ways to strengthen yourself to prevent abuse [33:11] The ripple effect   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Abigail’s Website   Abigail on Facebook  Abigail on Twitter  Abigail on LinkedIn    TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: The words “abuse” and “victim” were words I refused to claim in my world. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams TWEET: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” --Eleanor Roosevelt @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams TWEET: The truest self I can be is secure, loving, ethical, and fearless. @abigailgmanning #chasingdreams
