Summary: Sara takes (kind of sort of) a break from talking fanfic and bandfic to talk about a different form of storytelling– music, and writing about music! shineswithyou is a familiar face around Oasis and U2 tumblr, but what you might NOT know is that she has recently embarked on a writing journey of her own, with a substack blog about music and its place as the soundtrack of her own life. Sara and shines talk about her blog, and the difficulty of “writing words about sounds”; how music is a language in and of itself capable of telling its own (and our own) stories. Of COURSE we loop it back around to fanfiction and RPF (or, ‘real person fanfiction'), and how bandfic is, at its core, a pure form of love for the musical artist. Other talking points include: how awesome Bono is, and how we wish we could have been at Slane Castle in 2001; the perennial dysfunction of the Gallagher brothers; and the dichotomy of the U2 and Oasis fandoms. An email pops into my inbox with an opportunity I want to jump at right away. A very seasoned Improv performer is coming to town to do a workshop. Since I love attending workshops, I don't even hesitate. Without reading past the first sentence, I sign up. On the day of the workshop, I get there just as it's starting. The Improv instructor sitting at the piano sees me and says, “Hi, are you here for the musical Improv class?” as everyone else in the room turns around to look at me too.  Gulp... musical Improv? I have many skills, but music isn't one of them. He invites me to sit down yet what I really want to do is turn around and run out the door. However, with all eyes on me I feel I have no choice. I sit. Despite my several years of training in Improv comedy, that workshop still ranks among the most terrifying experiences ever! But I learn something important that day: If you don't have the talent to sing, your *attempts* can make for some good Improv scenes. {Read: guaranteed hilarity.} Speaking of unexpected performances, my guest today knows how to take risks and take control of where he wants his story to go, despite a perceived lack of talent. In 2004, William Hung managed to capture the support of fans of American Idol with his rejected audition of Ricky Martin's hit song, “She Bangs”. And now, he's here to talk about how to live a bold and confident life on the Storytelling School Podcast! In this episode, we discuss taking control of your story, containing your fear, sharing your unique point of view with others, and more. We also answer questions like: How can you adapt to different situations and turn a negative into a positive story? How do you take that first step when trying to do something outside your comfort zone? What should you keep in mind when invited to speak in front of an audience? What needs to be present in any story you share with an audience? And why is storytelling so important in our world today? What you will learn in this episode: How to take the reins of your own story in any given scenario How to stand behind your unique perspective and let go of the fear of judgment How a Toastmasters technique can help you uplevel your storytelling Who is William? William Hung is someone who's willing to bet on himself. In 2004, he was just a college kid with a Hollywood dream, like so many others. So he auditioned on American Idol and received a resounding rejection from the (in)famous Simon Cowell. Instead of letting that rejection define him negatively, William took that gamble of an audition and turned it around into a positive. He became a symbol of hope for people who desired to chase their dreams. Since then, he has become an entertainer, speaker, and professional poker player who tells his story (beyond what you've seen on TV) in hopes that it helps others to live life more boldly and confidently. Welcome to My 90s Music Podcast with me Mark McC. I will be bringing you regular chats with the very best musicians and scene-sters from the 90s. This podcast will be chocked full with your heroes and the people you loved and still love from The 90s. People who's music or voices were never too far away from your ears and those who adorned your school books and you had plastered all over your bedroom walls. I will chat to the 90s superstars who lived it, loved it and who were truly in the eye of the storm. Guests will include those who were the soundtrack to your youth or formative years as you discovered the very best bands, best music tracks, best music scenes and best gigs as you partied your way through the best decade of your life. Our parents and our grandparents had the 60s, we luckily had the 90s. What a time to be alive and what a time to look back on the trials, tribulations and triumphs of a decade that will never sound, smell or feel like that ever again. The first 5 episodes of My 90s Music Podcast will be with: Alan McGee of Creation Records and signing Oasis fame. Steve Hamilton who is a famous sax player and composer who recorded and or toured with bands like Blur, Radiohead and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Mark Bedford who is Madness Bass Player and Founder member. Chris Helme - Seahorses front man and singer songwriter in his own right And Scottish National Treasure Duglas T. Stewart who is BMX bandits frontman and long time friend and collaborator with members of Teenage Fanclub, Superstar, Soup Dragons and many more of the Belshill Music Glitterati.   For those of you who don't know me, here is a little bit about me… I'm Mark McC, your host and I am stuck somewhere between 1989 and the early 2000s. I was always obsessed with the music of the 1990s since hearing She Bangs the Drums and Step On in a mate's sister's bedroom record player (she was out) when I was 14. I worked at Our Price Records in Irvine and Kilmarnock in the west coast of Scotland during school and University which gave me a proper schooling in music and opened my eyes to every genre and decade (but the alternative and mainstream 90s music was where I felt most at home). I was 16 when Britpop kicked off in 1992 with Blur and Suede and 18 when Liam and Noel launched the song that changed everything Supersonic. At the end of the 90s I moved from Ayrshire to The big Smoke, to London, to start working with some of the big music magazines like (NME, LOADED, MELODY MAKER, MUZIK and UNCUT) in the late 90s and never looked back (apart from my music tastes). My 90s Podcast is almost here. Most of the time when we let fear of rejection hold us back, it’s imaginary, right? We are afraid of hypothetical scenarios that are based on falsehoods or things that haven’t happened yet. And that’s enough to stop us in our tracks. But what’s waiting for you on the other side of rejection? What if the fear you’re letting take hold of you isn’t protecting you, but is actually in the way of all of your amazing potential and winnings? I’ll take you one step further here. What if the fear of rejection you have – the big scary monster – actually did turn out to be real and left you humiliated? To go even one step further… what if the rejection happened in real time on a national stage? And what if despite all of that, you turned it into one of the best thing that’s ever happened for you and your career? Why am I asking these questions? Well…If you’ve ever hesitated to put yourself out there from fear of rejection, you need to hear from my next guest. William Hung, speaker, author, and coach, has a message: your happiness and your destiny are a choice. William had a very public experience with rejection when he was a contestant on American Idol, and ridiculed by Simon Cowell. How do you handle situations that feel like massive setbacks? How do you react when you’re told, “it can’t be done,” "you’re not good enough," or "you’re destined to be a failure?" William Hung has received that harsh feedback many times. The most memorable was when he was laughed off the stage by American Idol judges for his rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs”. Those that  laughed, judged + critiqued missed what was actually happening: the power of an individual believing in his dreams.  Today's conversation is truly heart-warming. William shares about taking chances, the courage to fail forward, and rising above cynics to become a champion by choice and smiling every step of the way. SHOW NOTES: William’s mother was very supportive + encouraged him to do his best in a school.  During high school, William excelled in math and science but struggled academically while studying civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. William won a talent show at UC Berkeley singing Ricky Martin’s "She Bangs", giving him the confidence to audition for American Idol days later. Recalling the 2004 American Idol audition, William knew he wouldn’t advance to the next round because of Randy Jackson’s immediate reaction. “I already gave my best. I have no regrets at all.”: William’s response after Simon Cowell’s comment, “You can’t sing. You can’t dance. What do you want me to say?” The primary motivations for continuing with his singing career was not money but defending who he is and counteract others making things up about him. William remembers watching other auditions from his season and seeing contestants getting so angry they’d throw water bottles. He understood that the judges were just playing their roles + doing their job and it was no reason to get upset. During a UC Berkeley volleyball game, a record company presented William a $25,000 check to record a record album. It went on to hit #1 on the independent charts. “It doesn’t matter if you have the most talent. It matters if you can bring happiness with your entertainment.” “You are already unique. You are already special. Keep believing in that truth. Do not give up and you will succeed.” “I’m infamous, and some people think, a joke. That doesn’t make me feel good because I am a genuine person. I don’t let it get to me because I am who I am.” “It’s not what they say. It’s what you choose to hear.” “Looking back on my American Idol experience, I realize Randy was smiling. Paula was smiling. Even Simon was smiling. I realize when people saw me, I freed them to smile.” Today, William is a professional motivational speaker + hopes his audiences choose to be happy in their lives “I don’t feel the need to justify my value.” Watch William Hung’s American Idol audition here. If you enjoyed hearing William Hung's story, you'll love my conversation with Lizzie Velasquez. Lizzie shares her positivity, her life's work at spreading kindness, and how she's standing up to bullies. Listen on ep. 71. WILLIAM HUNG'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 What is the best book you’ve ever read? Tapping into Wealth by Margaret Lynch. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I still have that kid in me. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My wallet. I’m very practical! You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Ricky Martin. My first question would be, “What kind of impact do you want your music to make on others?” What is the best advice you’ve ever received? The only way you can fail is if you give up. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Find a true talent instead of randomly putting yourself out there on American Idol. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Live your best life and have no regrets.  *** Did you enjoy today's episode? Share it with your friends! Then subscribe, rate + review on Apple Podcasts. There may be no one in recent years who has endured more public criticism than today’s guest. He’s taken it in stride to springboard into several career endeavors, maintaining his optimism and happy energy while doing so! After his American Idol audition, William Hung’s rendition of “She Bangs” became famous for all the wrong reasons. Despite the harsh criticism he endured, William persevered, going on to attract a cult following, release three albums, and performing live with Ricky Martin in Las Vegas. A motivational speaker and professional optimist, William is proof that the underdog can succeed when you rise above the haters and choose to be happy. William has appeared on media outlets like FOX, ABC, CNN, and NBC, and in such publications as Rolling Stone magazine, TIME, and USA Today. He’s been a featured guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! And The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Born in Hong Kong, William now resides in Los Angeles and has written a brand new book, Champion by Choice.  Making choices Have you ever been at a crossroads in life? Most of us have been at the point at which we had to make monumental decisions about the future. For William, his decision was to keep going in pursuing his education or to ride the wave of popularity into an entertainment career. With only one life to live, William knew he wanted to live with no regrets at all. He just wanted people to know the truth about him and his story, so the entertainment career was his choice. He went on to do a movie, TV shows, albums, and a book. Even though his career lasted only a few years, he’s happy with his decision and the path it’s brought him down. TWEET: Live a life of no regrets! @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Facing criticism No one likes to be criticized or humiliated, and most of us have never endured either to the extent that William has. He says you have to listen to the voices, but you have to decide who to listen to and whose advice and criticism to discard. Constructive criticism can be used to improve yourself, but random hating is what you have to let go. William learned the important skill of reframing criticism in positive ways to help him move forward. TWEET: Decide who to listen to and who to ignore! @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Lessons from William’s book William’s book focuses on “Three C’s.” The first one is Communication, because everyone loves to be around happy, positive energy. William learned to share his truth in tactful ways as he communicated with others. Another C is Context, which means to look at the big picture and not get bogged down with what’s happening around you right now. The third C is Connection because we all need others to help us. William says that no one can succeed on their own in the long term. Sometimes we tend to hold onto people that we should have let go. William explains how the values and vision we want to create in the world will dictate our dreams.  TWEET: No one can succeed on their own in the long term. @willhungspeaks #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Take action today. Who are you right now? Who do you want to become? You may feel that you are not happy with your life right now. You know you need to change but it’s hard for you to take a giant leap into the unknown. You are constantly asking yourself, “What if I could…?” It doesn’t have to be this way. During this engaging keynote, William explores the different identities that the public perceives him to be and the identities he wants for himself. William masterfully weaves vivid stories with universal truths into a memorable experience. Audiences leave inspired and equipped to apply the lessons learned, and take their performance to new heights. Key points: - Let go of the identity people tell you that you should be - Letting go of your past and current identities is not about abandoning your responsibilities, it is about your mentality for renewal - Instead of being attached to where you have been, think about where you haven’t been Bio: After his American Idol audition, William Hung’s rendition of “She Bangs” became famous for all the wrong reasons. Despite a humbling start, William redeemed himself. He has since appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Ellen DeGeneres Show and even performed live with Ricky Martin in Las Vegas. He currently resides in Los Angeles. William James Hung is a Hong Kong-born American former singer who gained fame in early 2004 as a result of his off-key audition performance of Ricky Martin's hit song "She Bangs" on the third season of the television series American Idol. Soon after American Idol ended, William landed a number of gigs as a singer and appeared on some of the top American Shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Entertainment Tonight, David Letterman, The Howard Stern Radio Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show.  But he has a story left to tell - while many people think he simply put on an act to embarrass himself, the truth was far from it. He wanted to sing and get on stage. This is what our conversation is about.  Fast forward 14 years, William has released two albums but is looking to try other things in life, become a coach and help others overcome adversity. He's still figuring things out - and talking to him was fascinating.  Please subscribe to our show on your mobile phone.  Visit feisworld.com for more show notes, resources to help you become a podcaster and make a living doing it without counting the downloads.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

In this episode Shakira Brown a.k.a The Small Biz Whisperer goes in depth with the “star” one of American Idol’s most infamous auditions. Hung took a leap of faith and stood on line for hours to sing his favorite song “She Bangs” in front of the judges for a chance to make it to Hollywood. He didn’t have the pipes to be invited for the big stage, but his bold and comical audition catapulted him to stardom in a different way. Hung, who famously said he had no regrets and tried his best after being panned by snarky Simon Cowell, ultimately turned sour lemons into lemonade. He became and international sensation getting paid to perform in his personal style of singing. He rode the typical 15 minutes of fame wave for FOUR years, but when the calls stopped coming in his star faded. Today, Hung is on a path to reinvention and he joined me on the Moment Masters Show with update and advice for anyone who has trouble taking risks. In Hung’s words, “If you keep believing in yourself you can become unique, you can become one of a kind and make the impact you are always looking for.” Listen to this entertaining and inspiring Moment Masters Show interview with William Hung for a new way of thinking about Hung and perhaps even yourself. When William Hung was growing up and even throughout his early college years, he thought he had to stay inside the box - the box other people believe are right for him as Asian. He thought he would stay that way, but he was on the verge of getting kicked out of UC Berkeley's civil engineering program and he decided to try singing the song, "She Bangs" for fun at his school's talent show. He had no expectations but to his great surprise, he won! He used this as his confidence booster to audition for American Idol. He never made it to Hollywood but somehow, he was able to achieve accidental fame and success anyway. As a result, he had to face intense criticism from the media and his peers. Nevertheless, he trusted his supporters and never gave up his vision to bring joy to other people through his entertainment. He finally now found his true calling as an inspirational speaker to help other people to use their “magical gift” – their voice, to achieve their dreams as small business owners and entrepreneurs. The requests for the Hex Hector Tribute are in and the sets are finished!   I took my entire catalog of Hex's mixes (there's a shit-load), gathered up all of your favorites and then went through and started deleting things I knew weren't going to be included.  The only requests that were not were from Jason.  Sorry dude, but the songs you requested just don't exist.  I realize you saw them listed on Hex's Wikipedia page, but even that page acknowledges "this biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources."  You can better determine if a song remix is real or not by checking Discogs, which tends to be more reliable when it comes to official and even unofficial remixes. Back in the days of Napster and WinMX, there were ALWAYS mixes that were attributed to either Hex Hector or Thunderpuss.  In an interview I can't find online now, Barry Harris had addressed that issue.  When he and Chris Cox remixed Madonna's What It Feels Like For a Girl, someone had posted some shitty version online and attributed it to Thunderpuss.  Warner's was pissed and yanked their mix from the official release, even though they tried to explain it wasn't theirs.' Back to the mix; When I got home yesterday afternoon, I started on a mixing blitz.  I decided NOT to edit all these massive songs down to mix show edits, but let the majority of them ride all the way through.  Most of the editing was done during the intro and outro of the songs.  A good deal of my own mix show edits can be found on respective Diva Series by Deborah Cox, Whitney Houston, etc.  With the exception of one, I managed to keep all of the sets (six in total) under 80 minutes; figuring the CD burners among you will really appreciate that. While all of the remixes included in this six set series are the cream, like most of you, I have my personal favorites.  From this first set, Melanie C's I Turn To You, Ricky Martin's She Bangs and Sarah Brightman's Harem are tops for a variety of reasons.  I'm sure you folks have yours and if they aren't in this set, they'll likely be in one of the next five going up between now and the end of the month. In fact, I'm done with July and will be putting "something new" out just about every other day starting on Monday.  Well, actually today but I digress.
