Elsewhere in sports, a Buffalo Bills draft pick is being accused of sexual assault, NHL players will be allowed to compete in the Olympics, and Sue Bird is getting a statue! Heart-warming story about a kitten that was stuck on some train tracks in Alaska, along with an absolutely incredible story about a Holocaust survivor who finally got to meet up with one of the US Veterans who helped to free him 80 years ago. He did it again. The Donald pulled off yet another miracle by taking his (failing) social media platform public. The deal had been in the works for a while and looked DOA last year. But it was revived recently and when it hit the Nasdaq this week it added billions to Trump's net worth and gave him an immediate cash infusion that will likely prevent him having to sell assets to make the (reduced) bond in his civil fraud case. The wealthy in this country truly operate under different rules. The mechanism Trump used to take a losing company public quickly and with relative ease compared to normal IPOs is called a SPAC, or Special Purpose Acquisition Company. SPACs gained a lot of attention a few years back before basically imploding as regulators frowned upon them and investments fizzled. As quickly as they gained prominence, they flamed out and were basically revealed to be scams. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Studies have shown that fireworks have negative effects on human health and the environment as they release toxic metals and contribute to air and water pollution. The noise from fireworks can be extremely distressing for combat veterans, individuals with PTSD, and pets, leading to anxiety, panic attacks, and even running away. Fireworks-related fires cause significant property damage and pose a risk to both people and wildlife. Fireworks regulations are fragmented and challenging to enforce, and there are political and monetary pushbacks against stricter regulations thanks to moneyed interests (like fireworks manufacturers) lobbying lawmakers. One 21st-century solution to overcome these negatives is the use of drones for aerial displays, which are quieter, more environmentally friendly, and can still provide a visually stunning experience.
