We all know it's important to get your work published, but how do we actually make it happen? What benefits are there to seeing your work featured in publications? On today's episode, we're joined by Meghan Stolar Brown, director of Two Bright Lights and How They Asked, as she leads us through the wonderful world of publishing. She is sharing what editors are looking for, what to avoid when submitting your work to get published, and how Two Bright Lights can help you streamline the process. The Importance of Getting Your Work Published Getting your work published adds to your client experience. For example, you can wow your couples by getting their wedding featured in a magazine or blog. They will be super excited to see and share with their friends. It gets your work in front of potential clients too. It serves as an unbiased reference for your work. The editor is vouching for all the work behind it. Another bonus to getting your work published are the SEO benefits. The more backlinks you have in other websites, the higher your ranking becomes! What Editors Look For When you are crafting a submission, editors are looking for a lot of details. They want details in things they can write about. Publishers need to be able to write about it. Using the wedding photography example again, submit 70% details and 30% with people. This helps tell the story of the day. They want to be able to inspire their readers and by showing a story, they can! You also need to include all the people that helped on the event or the wedding. You need to give credit where credit is due. What Happens When Your Work is Rejected for a Publication You might not know the reason why your work wasn't accepted. Sometimes it has nothing to do with your talent and everything to do with what the editor is looking for during that time. Make sure you research publications before you submit anything to them. Make sure your style fits with their style. If your work is rejected, find another publication. There is a publication for everyone, so don't get discouraged. You'll find the perfect fit for you and your work. Episode 41: Online Reviews with Hillary Boyd from The Knot

There's no denying that online reviews are SUPER important these days. Most people check online reviews before doing just about anything, so it makes sense that people REALLY check online reviews before booking something as important as a wedding vendor! One of the BEST places to check wedding vendor reviews online is The Knot! In fact, both Ashley and Kate used The Knot when planning their weddings many years ago, and it's still as popular as ever today! In fact, 80% of couples utilize The Knot when planning their wedding! For this reason, we are stoked to have Hillary Boyd from The Knot on PhotoSpark this week to chat with us about the importance of online reviews, how to make the best of a listing on The Knot, and more! Key Takeaways: Research Your Potential Client: Not only is The Knot a great spot for vendor reviews, but many brides & grooms make their wedding website on The Knot! This is great news for you as a photographer, because you can do some slick recon to figure out who they are and what they're passionate about before you even meet them! This will help you decide if they're your ideal client, and will also help you with your consultation with them. Do they like craft beer? Make your consultation meeting at a brewery! Asking Clients for Reviews: This is all about timing! You can't ask for a review in the normal 2 week post-event window because they likely haven't even seen the final product yet. Hillary suggests delivering the images (with a very personal email or thank you card) and include a link in that initial contact to give them a chance to leave you a review! You can also text them the link... a lot of couples use the mobile option for The Knot, so this might be an easier route for them to take! Remember, clients who use review websites like The Knot, are way more likely to leave you a review because they're comfortable with using review sites & want to return the favor to other brides & grooms! Ask Clients for Feedback First: When you deliver your images, ask your clients if they're happy and if they have any feedback for you. That way, if they're unhappy for any reason, you have a chance to remedy the situation before they leave a negative review. Communication is SO important & a lot of times negative reviews are left only because they are frustrated & haven't felt like their issues have been taken care of. By asking clients for feedback, you're ensuring everyone is happy before they leave you an online review! Magic Number 11: Hillary mentions that 11 is the magic number of reviews! When you have 11+ reviews, potential clients tend to view your business as more legit than someone who has less than that. If your review page is brand new, consider contacting old clients & asking them to leave a review on the new site. And there's an easy way to do this! Let's say someone left you a Yelp review but now you're looking for reviews on The Knot. Consider copying their review and pasting it in an email to them. Tell them "Hey! I LOVED your review of me on Yelp. I'm trying to establish solid reviews on The Knot... I've copied your review here to make this as easy as possible... any chance you'd be able to create an account on The Knot and paste your review for me there?" This makes it easy & foolproof & will help you get to your 11 reviews! Submit, submit, submit: Hillary suggests submitting your work as much as possible! Most couples LOVE to be featured & this is a great way to show off your talent & work to new, potential clients, as well as connect with vendors from that wedding (it will tag all of them). We suggest submitting via Two Bright Lights (have you heard that episode?! It's SO informative & shows how easy the process is!). As our show grows, we are lucky to have more & more guest hosts who are interested in coming on the show & sharing about their companies and how they can help photographers with their business! This week we are joined by Meghan Brown of Two Bright Lights! In case you're unaware, Two Bright Lights is an online publishing platform that helps photographers get published both in online blogs & in print! It's a GREAT resource and super easy to use! Meghan chatted with us about some benefits of getting published, as well as some publication tips to help your work get published through a site like Two Bright Lights! Tune in for all of her awesome tips, but here are a few highlights!!   Key Takeaways: Two Bright Lights breakdown: Meghan chats a bit about how TBL works... once you have an account, you create an album (up to 150 images) from your event or photoshoot (they accept pretty much any type of shoot!), and then you can select which blogs, websites, magazine, etc you'd like to submit to. You have all the power over this part! Once your shoot is accepted, you'll be notified through the system about which blog/magazine picked it up, and you'll be notified again when it's published. It really couldn't be easier & they also have tons of publication tips on their website to help you out! Styled Shoots: Styled shoots are SUPER popular for publication right now! Potential brides (and families, for family shoots) want to see awesome details that they can add to their own wedding or shoot. Plus, it's an easy way for the photographer to make sure he/she grabs TONS of detail shots (because you don't have to work around someone else's hectic schedule!). What are some Benefits of Getting Published?  Establishes Credibility: Not only does getting published LOOK really cool, it helps establish credibility both among other photographers & among potential clients. Clients see your work, know you're reliable, and can also look forward to potentially being part of a published wedding or shoot themselves if they hire you! SEO: The more your name (and your work) is floating around the internet, the better your SEO results will be! This is especially true if you submit to very popular, high-traffic websites and blogs... the better their SEO is, the better yours will be! Social Media: When TBL promotes something, they tag the photographer (and the rest of the vendors!). So your name will pop up multiple times on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They also do all the work for you hashtag-wise, so you'll be easy to find in a search!  The blog/magazine itself will likely tag you too... so your name will be all over the place & easy for potential clients to find! Do Your Research: Take a day or two to browse around blogs & websites (and their Instagram feeds!) to see which sites match your style of photography & what potential clients you're looking for! Remember, this is another great way to weed potential clients down into the PERFECT ones for your style & personality! Don't submit weddings or shoots to blogs when you have no interest in repeating that style. Shoot with the Story in Mind: This is one of our favorite publication tips! It particularly applies to weddings... as you're shooting, keep a potential publication story in mind. Make sure you grab TONS of detail shots (that's what publishers LOVE), and make sure you seek out images that tell the story of the day. It doesn't hurt to also try to color coordinate your photos with the wedding colors. For example, if the colors are blue & purple, try to get an awesome shot of the wedding rings on top of some pretty purple flowers at the venue in front of the bright blue sky. This is a great way to tie additional photos into a blog post or publication post! Thanks for tuning in to another episode! We hope you enjoyed Meghan's publication tips!
