Hanif Abduraqqib. Sarah Kay. Elizabeth Acevedo. Clint Smith. Do any of these names sound familiar? How about Amanda Gorman? All of these writers are part of America's thriving contemporary poetry scene. But you won't find them in many text books, because high school poetry units tend to focus on dead poets, like Robert Frost, Walt Whitman and Edgar Allen Poe. North Carolina teacher Melissa Smith is working to change that. For the last seven years, she's been diversifying the canon in her classroom, and encouraging other teachers to do the same with the hashtag #teachlivingpoets. The shift has inspired teachers across the country to get creative with how they teach students things like tone, rhythm and structure in poetry. And it's inspired students to connect with and see reflections of themselves in the poets they study.

Today, let's talk about March Madness, and how to harness all that awesome enthusiasm to get your students excited about poetry. Last year I worked with Melissa Alter Smith from #teachlivingpoets to create a March Madness bracket for The Lighthouse, and I learned a lot from her in the process! This is such a fun and easy way to bring more voices into your curriculum and help kids see a lot of different sides of poetry.  You can set up your poetry bracket on your white board or on Google Slides. Then you fill it in with poetry that you love. You can mix together classic poetry, performance poetry from The Button Classroom-Friendly Youtube channel, readings by contemporary authors that you find online, or favorites from Def Poetry Jam. There are so many options! You can get fancy and have poems face off initially that cover similar themes or are from similar outlets, or you can just randomly scatter in poems and see what happens. All you need is a few minutes a day to read or play the two poems of the day in the classes that participate in the tournament. You can just have students close their eyes and raise their hands to vote, or you can build some writing and argument into it by having them rate the poems and defend their scores. Either way, keep track of the votes in each class and at the end of the day, move your winners forward in your tournament bracket.  By the end of your tournament, your students will be used to how this all works and it really should just take a few minutes a day that hopefully everyone will be looking forward to. Need a few poets to get you started? Take a look at Harry Baker, Amanda Gorman, and Sarah Kay for a start. Or check out the poetry bracket Melissa has created on the Teach Living Poets site or, if you're in The Lighthouse, the one that she and I built in the Teach Living Poets section.  A March Madness poetry bracket is such an easy way to integrate more poetry from many voices into your curriculum and, of course, get more student buy-in for it! That's why this week I want to highly recommend you give it a try.   Learn more about The Lighthouse: https://sparkcreativity.kartra.com/page/C4Z236 Teach Living Poets March Madness Bracket: https://teachlivingpoets.com/2023/02/26/march-madness-poetry-bracket/  Go Further:  Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. The importance of data visualization cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in making complex data accessible, engaging, and actionable. Presenting data in a way that clearly communicates an underlying narrative or message can lead to more effective decision-making and a deeper understanding of data-driven insights. Additionally, data visualization assists in conveying these messages to different audiences, ensuring that the information is received and interpreted accurately. In her conversation with Melina Palmer, Sarah Kay Miller discusses the importance of crafting a narrative with data visualization and how it can effectively communicate complex information. She notes that data visualization is not merely about producing visually appealing designs but also about presenting data in such a way that resonates with the intended audience. Throughout their discussion, Miller emphasizes the importance of thoughtfulness and creativity in creating meaningful data art. In this episode: Delve into the captivating realm of data visualization and data art to transform information processing. Understand the difference between data visualization and data art. Appreciate the critical connection between narrative and impactful data visualization and data art. Obtain key pointers to design compelling data visuals that resonate with diverse audiences. Identify the value of thought-provoking comparisons for maximum effectiveness in data presentations. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina introduces the Brainy Business podcast and welcomes Sarah Kay Miller, a data visualization designer, to the show. She also announces the 5-year anniversary of the podcast and the data art created by Sarah Kay to celebrate the milestone. 00:02:29 - About Sarah Kay Miller, Sarah Kay Miller is an independent data visualization designer with a background in graphic design. She defines data visualization as the process of visualizing data, making it more intuitive for humans to understand patterns, trends, and comparisons. Data art, on the other hand, is a broader category of creative endeavors that draw inspiration from or are touched by data. 00:05:00 - Data Visualization vs. Data Art, The line between data visualization and data art is blurry. Data visualization involves creating charts and graphs that help people understand data more intuitively, while data art is a creative endeavor that draws inspiration from data sets. Both are necessary and can be used in different contexts. 00:08:00 - Process of Data Visualization, Sarah Kay Miller spends a lot of time investigating data sets and collaborating with clients to understand domain expertise. Data visualization involves threading a narrative through the data to make it more interesting and engaging. It allows people to communicate messages, insights, or ideas more effectively. 00:13:21 - Sarah Kay's Process, Sarah Kay Miller's process involves three main phases: groundwork, design, and iteration. She elaborates on each phase and how she approaches them. 00:15:37 - Designing Data Visualizations, Sarah Kay Miller talks about her process of designing data visualizations. She discusses how she dives into the data and visualizes it in many ways -- everything from basic charts to the more elaborate and artistic. She also talks about the importance of understanding brand identity and color palettes when designing. 00:17:08 - Insights from Data Visualization, Miller shares her insights from visualizing data from The Brainy Business podcast. She talks about the upward trend in podcast downloads since 2018 and the number of downloads per episode. She talks about how she played with the layout of the circles to give it more movement and how she used a brighter blue to make it pop on thumbnails. She also talks about the importance of showcasing the global reach of the podcast and how everyone matters. 00:30:49 - Data Visualization as Data Art, Sarah discusses the importance of representing data in a visually appealing way and the power of data art to convey information. She talks about her love for creating unique and unusual chart types and how they can help tell a story. 00:34:05 - Fun Project on Architecture, Sarah shares details of a project she worked on for Space 10, a subsidiary of IKEA. She talks about how they created a data set for a visualization of the history of tools architects use and how digital tools have impacted building design. The end result was a comprehensive and beautiful data visualization that straddled both data visualization and data art. 00:40:53 - Data Visualization for Social Media, Sarah talks about the challenges of creating data visualizations for social media, where attention spans are shorter and space is limited. She discusses the importance of video and motion design in creating engaging and informative data stories for platforms like Instagram and TikTok. 00:43:51 - Time Required for Projects, Sarah explains that the timeline for a data visualization project varies depending on the scope, and collecting data can add time to the process. She suggests that two to three months is doable for a small to medium-sized project, but larger or more complex projects can take longer. 00:46:44 - The Importance of Data Visualization, The value of data art and visualization in effectively communicating data to viewers. She emphasizes the need to understand numbers and find meaningful comparisons to make data more relatable to humans. 00:47:25 - Impactful Data Visualization Examples, Melina shares about an article in The New York Times on vacant office spaces in New York City as an excellent example of impactful data visualization. The comparison of the number of vacant spaces to the Empire State Building makes the data more memorable and understandable. 00:48:01 - Pareto Principle in Data Visualization, The Pareto principle or 80/20 rule is discussed for data visualization. Melina recommends spending 80% of the time on the 20% of data that's most important or interesting to make the visualization more impactful. 00:48:34 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. Speaking Your Brand

This quarter on the podcast we're focused on the theme of “Wealth.”  We've talked about how to go from commodity speaker to thought leader (last week's episode 291) to generating more leads from your presentations (on-air coaching call episode 290) to increasing your speaker fees (episode 289) to using our framework to create a signature talk for both impact and income (episode 288). Today we're focusing on the wealth of your relationships. After all, your net worth is in your net work. If I think about many of the speaking invitations I've received over my career, the vast majority came from my network. This episode is to help you think and plan more intentionally and proactively about building and nurturing relationships in your industry and with other speakers and event organizers. My guests are Colleen O'Mara and Jessie Nagel, who are co-founders of Hype, a PR, social, and branding agency based in Los Angeles, that they started 25 years ago (so impressive!). As you'll hear in this episode, I invited Colleen and Jessie to talk about this topic because I've seen the robustness of their network in action and how much their clients and relationships matter to them. They are soon-to-be graduates of our Thought Leader Academy, so they also share their experience and why they joined to work on their projects (for Colleen, a memoir; for Jessie, a non-profit initiative). We talk about: What their agency does, who they work with, and how it's evolved over the past 25 years How Colleen and Jessie have been intentional about building their network and creating trust Specific things they do to meet new people and to nurture relationships for their business Tips you can use, including “Always take the meeting” and the power of hosting your own events (big or small) The most impactful relationship they each made that changed their life/business Their experience in the Thought Leader Academy and why they joined  About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. At Speaking Your Brand, we help women entrepreneurs and professionals clarify their brand message and story, create their signature talks, and develop their thought leadership platforms. Our mission is to get more women in positions of influence and power because it's through women's stories, voices, and visibility that we challenge the status quo and change existing systems. Because of Colleen and Jessie's diverse interests, they built a client roster for Hype, which constantly challenges them and their energetic team. Today, the international Hype roster features an eclectic group of talent in entertainment + beyond. Hype recently expanded by adding a social media division, Hype Social, as well as a branding-design division, Hype Creative. In addition to her work co-managing Hype, Colleen enjoys her collaboration with an ever-expanding group of press contacts around the world. Beyond her co-directorship of Hype, Colleen writes short stories, poetry, essays; and has embarked on writing her first book-length project, "Raw Diamond: A Memoir" (www.colleenomaradiamond.com). She is represented by Editor-Agent Nancy Hancock, formerly of Harper Collins & Harper One. Colleen also hosts & moderates her own writing group each week with Writing Partner Catherine Simone Gray (Unsilenced Woman) called The Writer's Collective, which includes Writers from around the U.S.   Jessie Nagel: Special Agent Jessie Nagel is the co-founder  of Hype -- a sassy boutique communications company that provides brand-strategic PR, Marketing, and Social Media services to creative companies. Dedicated to the entertainment industry as a community, Hype is committed to keen storytelling and promoting the creative process. Just under two years ago, Jessie, along  with four other co-founders from various disciplines with advertising, launched Green The Bid, a non-profit organization, educational resource, and community dedicated to transitioning the global advertising and production industry to sustainable and regenerative practices. Green The Bid currently has over 300 member companies (and growing) - comprising brands, agencies, production, and post - along with supporting trade organizations.     Jessie's participation in the development and ongoing nurturing of Green The Bid came out of volunteer work on the West Board of the  AICP (the Association of Independent Producers) for which she helped develop the organization's first sustainability guidelines. She leads the annual AICP Gives Food + Goods Drive and is a member of AICP's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.     Colleen's Favorites: Book = Lisa Brennan Jobs' Memoir “Small Fry,” which I modeled my own book project on. TED talk = Roxanne Gay's “Confessions of a Bad Feminist" Quote = Dr. Maya Angelou (who I had the good fortune to collaborate with on a project about “Diversity,” before that was even a word or term, in my early 20s…): “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you.” and “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style." Jessie's Favorites: Books = “Fight Knight” by Mariam Towes is a funny, heartbreaking, wonderful story told through the perspective of a precocious girl about a family of three generations of women. “Station Eleven” by Emily St John Mendel is a beautiful and haunting work of fiction about humanity's cruelty and hopeful perseverance. It's the book that inspired the equally excellent TV episodic series. TED talk = Spoken word poet Sarah Kay's “If I should have a daughter” https://www.ted.com/talks/sarah_kay_if_i_should_have_a_daughter Quote = “Don't ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldn't.” - Michelle Obama
