I was rooting for you!! We were ALL rooting for you!!! This week we read Jay Manuel's "novel"/self-insertion fan fiction about what it was like to work on America’s Next Top Model in "The Wig, the Bitch and the Meltdown." We dive into this burn book and discuss the 2000’s hot spots Tao and Buddakan (and why Jay chose to put them in a novel that takes place in 2020), doing Tyra dirty, Miss J's d*ck pics, why Janice Dickinson is our favorite, and that scene where Jay gets to pretend that Nigel Barker wanted him carnally. Barker had planned to continue with his education in medicine, however his mother got him on The Clothes Show, for a model search campaign, in which he won and with this he began his career in modeling. For approximately 10 years Barker modeled in New York, Milan, Paris and London. Observing the fashion industry, Barker became engrossed in photography. Barker opened StudioNB, his photo studio in Meat Packing District, Manhattan in 1996. For a decade in front of the camera, Barker decided to be the one holding it. So, he pursued photography and quit modeling. He did photography ad campaigns and other projects for Interview, Town & Country, Ted Baker, Lexus, Nine West, Jordache, Ford, Sony, Pamella Roland, Beefeater, GQ, Cover, Tatler, Seventeen, and Leviev. Gradually, Barker was becoming popular and buyers for his work were increasing in number. A call from Tyra Banks in 2004, opened an opportunity for Nigel Barker to photograph America's Next Top Model. He also became the judge of the show. Following this, he became the judge for Miss America Pageant, 2007 and in 2012 for Miss Universe Pageant. One day, Tyra's makeup artist missed their flight to NYC and Jay got a call to do Tyra's makeup last minute for the GQ Man of The Year Awards. He ran to her hotel room, she loved the way she looked, and voila, the two started working together consistently after that. Jay is no stranger to working with high profile clients and we discuss a few such as, oh we don't know, Jennifer Lopez. Jay details, and we slow him down to miss nothing, how the idea for America's Next Top Model came about and what his initial reaction was when Tyra ran the idea by him at 3am. We discuss casting and filming. Jay explains the evolution from Episode One when they were just figuring all out to his becoming the official Creative Director on the show, a transition which happened before our very eyes. Jay discusses what it was like to work with some of ANTM's judges such as Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker and J. Alexander. Ahh, Janice! Tune in now to our Part I sit down with Mr. Jay Manuel. He opens up about why he decided to leave the hit show in Cycle 8. He explains what his conversation with Tyra was like when he told her he wanted to leave the hit show and his fear that he may “never work in this town again”. Jay explains how he was convinced to stay after giving notice and the icy environment on set once he decided to stay for another cycle. Yes, Tyra Banks was not at all thrilled nor pleased. We discus the overall toxic environment on ANTM and what it was like to work in that environment for many many years. Jay chat about why he was really ready and really did leave in Cycle 18 of the show. Next, we discuss the book!!! The Wig, The Bitch & The Meltdown. We have so many questions, where to begin. Jay explains why he decided to write this book now and why he chose fiction as opposed to a memoir. We prod Jay to discuss what is fiction in this novel versus what is really, well, real on the set of Model Muse. We discuss some of the bigger issues in the book such as the attraction to fame, the cost of fame, and the abuse of power. Of course, we ask Jay if he has heard from Tyra since writing the book and, if so, what that conversation was like. We also discuss whether he has heard from Janice Dickinson, Miss J and Nigel Barker since the book hit the shelves. We discuss the creative process to writing a book and what Jay discovered about himself throughout the process. Finally, we discuss some of Jay's many other accomplishments such as the E! Red Carpet, which Awards Shows are his favorite, who he would love to sit down and have lunch with and last, but certainly not least, his iconic silver hair. @mrjaymanuel@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBONUS EPISODES Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by BOLL & BRANCH - https://www.bollandbranch.com (15% Off First Set of Sheets - Use Code “Velvet”)Brought to you by BETTER HELP - https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope (10% Off First Month - Use Code "velvet rope") MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

America's Next Top Model Second Runner Up, Eugena Washington, steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her home in Los Angeles, California, Eugenia is here to tell it all and she DOES - NOT - HOLD - BACK! One day, Eugena saw an “Apply Here” casting call on the CW Website for Cycle Seven of America's Next Top Model. Always being called a Model in High School, she figured “why not” and sent her application in. That one click of a button led to an open casting call of over 2,000 Model Hopefuls. Over the course of two long days, those 2,000 were narrowed down to 50 and so on and so forth until Tyra Banks and The Executive Producers had their Cycle Seven cast chosen. Months later, she got the fateful call telling her to pack her bags and off to the infamous ANTM Model Apartment she went. As prepared as she thought she was, nothing could prepare Eugena for the reality of filming one of America's notoriously most pressure filled reality shows. Pressure filled from the other models as well as pressure filled from Producers who Eugena is clear to point out, “were not our friends”. The 16 hour days with no sleep and cameras in your face the second you woke up certainly did not help at all. Eugena explains how she and the other Models were manipulated by Producers to bring the drama, how everything they said could and would be used against them, and how stressful the weekly eliminations were. Eugena also discusses famed Creative DIrector Jay Manuel as well as judges Janice Dickinson, Miss J, Nigel Barker and Twiggy. In today’s episode, we have an incredible guest who is a brilliant and brave disruptor, with a huge smile and infectious personality. Mirna Valerio is a native of Brooklyn, NY, a former educator, and cross-country coach, ultramarathoner, author of the Amazon bestselling memoir, A Beautiful Work in Progress, and antiracism educator. Although she began running in high school, she recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008 and started her blog Fatgirlrunning—about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner endurance athletes— while training for her first marathon. Mirna's athletic story has been featured in the WSJ, Runner’s World, on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in the viral REI-produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. Her writing has been featured in Women’s Running Magazine, Self Magazine Online, Outside Online, and Runner's World Magazine. In 2018 she was chosen as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and she has appeared on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Access Daily, and on Nigel Barker’s new V1Ve Network. When she wears her diversity, equity, and inclusion hat, she helps schools, nonprofits, and businesses to step up their antiracism efforts. She currently lives, trains, and works in Vermont, USA. In today’s episode, we talk about Mirna’s book A Beautiful Work in Progress, as well as explore the myriad of stories from Mirna’s adventurous life.    Mirna shares: Her 5 core values and how they impact her life choices (they’re awesome, and I’m adopting several of them) Being a disruptor as a female, Black, plus-sized, professional athlete, and ultrarunner What it means to do “adventure work” and how she came to do it What books she’s reading and why she’s into them How she brings people to the work of activism through teaching and adventure Her INCREDIBLE journey from classroom teacher to professional athlete with corporate sponsorships (Lululemon among others!)   “We are all entitled to inhabit the Earth.  People have reactions because many of the spaces (that I show up in) have historically seemed to be for white folks.”- Mirna Valerio Thank you for listening to the show. This comes after new analysis revealed that more manufacturers are making smaller watches for men and also a trend for bigger watches for women. In addition, many watches are now being changed in size to appeal to both genders, prompting calls for watch manufacturers to move to a sizing model of small, medium, large instead of the now outdated model of men's watches and women's watches. The campaign, which is launched by Watchfinder & Co., is the latest to ensure that fashion is made accessible for everyone and that nobody faces any stigma for wanting to purchase items that would suit them better. Having been a judge on some of the biggest TV fashion shows including America's Next Top Model (for 17 seasons) and The Face alongside Naomi Campbell, Nigel is wanting to change the way that many people perceive fashion and how fashion is perceived by people in a bid to make it more accessible and for more comfortable for everyone to enjoy – regardless of their gender.
