SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO YOUR PROMPT REPLY—Jody Quon's desk is immaculate. There's a lot there, but she knows exactly where everything is. It's like an image out of Things Organized Neatly. She rarely swears. Or loses her temper. In fact she's one of the most temperate people in the office. Maybe the most. She's often been referred to as a “rock.”She remembers every shoot and how much it cost to produce. She knows who needs work and who she can ask for favors. She's got the magazine schedule memorized and expects you to as well. She's probably got your schedule memorized, too. She's usually one of the first in the office and last to leave. In fact, on the day she was scheduled to give birth to her first child, she came to work and put in a full day. When her water broke at around 6pm, she called her husband to say, “It's time.”I don't know if any of this is true. Except the baby thing. That is true. Kathy Ryan told me so.I had a teacher in high school, Ms. Trice. She was tough. I didn't much like her. She would often call me out for this or that. Forty years later, she's the only one I remember, and I remember her very fondly. In my career, I've often thought that the best managing editors, production directors, and photography directors were just like Ms. Trice. These positions, more than any others, are what make magazines work. They're hard on you because they expect you to be as professional as you can be. They make you better. (I see you, Claire, Jenn, Nate, Carol, and Sally.)I suspect that a slew of Jody Quon's coworkers and collaborators feel that same way about her. Actually, I don't suspect. I know. I've heard it from all corners of the magazine business. I heard it again yesterday from her mentor and good friend, Kathy Ryan.“She just has that work ethic,” Ryan says. “It's just incredible when you think about it. The ambition of some of the things that they've done. And that has been happening right from the beginning. Ambition in the best sense. Thinking big. And she's cool, always cool under pressure. We had a grand time working together. I still miss her.”Jody Quon is one of those people who makes everybody around her better. That's what I believe. And after this conversation, you probably will, too.es.”—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. And that’s never been more true than in our fractured-attention-span, doom-scrolling age. People can process an image in as little as 13 milliseconds — and that often means deciding whether to read the story below that image - or not - exactly that quickly.    So the choices journalists make about what image to put with a story really matter. But they can also be super complicated.    OPB’s Photo Editor Kristyna Wentz-Graff sat down with us to talk about the decisions she makes when making photographs and choosing which images will accompany stories. We talked about covering elections, protests, homelessness and more … all while remaining centered on the fundamental humanity of her subjects.   For more Evergreen episodes and to share your voice with us, visit our showpage. I am excited to bring you, my Nerdy Photo Crew, a valuable and insightful episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast that dives into the often-mysterious world of photo editors and creative directors. In this episode, we discuss how photographers can better understand these key players and present their work to these decision makers more effectively. Demystifying the Roles: Photo Editors and Creative Directors First things first: what exactly do photo editors and creative directors do? Our guest, Karen Williams, breaks down the roles and responsibilities, revealing the crucial part they play in the visual storytelling process. Photo editors are the gatekeepers of visual content, curating and selecting images that align with a publication or project's vision. Creative directors, on the other hand, oversee the broader creative process, ensuring that all visual elements adhere to the brand's aesthetic and strategic goals. Understanding what photo editors and creative directors look for can significantly increase your chances of getting your work noticed and published. That means an increased chance of getting paid!! It's not just about having great photos; it's about presenting them in a way that fits the editor's or director's needs and vision. Tune In Now! We invite you to tune in to this enlightening episode of our podcast. Whether you're an aspiring photographer or a seasoned pro looking to refine your approach, this episode offers valuable insights into the minds of photo editors and creative directors.   Have you ever struggled with editing your images to present in a portfolio or as a story pitch? If so, our conversation in this podcast might be of some help. We recently had the great fortune to speak with one of the finest picture editors in the business, former National Geographic photographer, photo editor, and director of photography, Sarah Leen, who we interviewed as part of our coverage of B&H's 50th Anniversary Bild Expo 2023. Sarah has worked all sides of the table, starting in the field with a camera in hand, then transitioning to a photo editor, and ultimately being tapped to lead National Geographic as Director of Photography in 2013—the first woman ever selected for this role. Among the topics covered in this chat are Sarah's shift from picture maker to photo editor and how she gained the credentials to take on such a role. We make the important distinction between editing the work of others vs. a photographer editing his or her own images, emphasizing the added difficulty of disconnecting from personal experience to make objective decisions, and how the guidance of a skilled photo editor can help. Turning to her career trajectory, Sarah explains the differences between a photo editor and the director of photography, which is a managerial role. And, when it comes to the recent organizational changes at National Geographic—not to mention within the industry at large—Sarah clarifies that, despite ceasing newsstand sales, the magazine will still be widely available in print, yet by subscription only. We end our chat with details about Sarah's current work as an independent photo editor and educator, her founding of the Visual Thinking Collective with three former colleagues, and the upcoming release of her latest book project Ukraine: A War Crime, featuring work by 93 photographers. She tells me how she transitioned to being a photo editor and how she made that her full time work. She has continued to learn and grow in the space and wanted to find a way to support and share her tips, so she created a course for photo editing! I love that so many of Alisa's tips are not only for those in photography. She talks about how important your network is and how she has really focused on finding careers for the different chapters of her life (serious goals)! If there's one thing that brings Mainers together, it's the flavors of this great state. Whether we're teaching our kids to cook family recipes, or gathered together and sharing them at the table, we know that our food traditions bring us together as a community. The Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook celebrates Maine's rich culinary traditions—old and new— exploring indigenous foodways, hearty Yankee cuisine, community cookbook classics, and favorite dishes of new Mainers. This collection of more than 200 recipes spans kitchens across the state: pulling dishes from grandma's recipe box, award-winning chefs, Maine personalities, and rustic fishing camps. Celebrating the state's whole community with recipes from all 16 counties, this cookbook includes heartwarming stories and dishes from both prominent and everyday Mainers, and is beautifully illustrated with family photos, handwritten recipe cards and historic community cookbook covers. This lovely testament to home cooking and the community cookbook tradition in Maine reminds us how the food we cook connects us to the people and places we love. It will surely become a treasured keepsake of Maine's Bicentennial celebration for all who love to cook—and eat!
