The first in Drew Barrymore's iconic pairings with Adam Sandler, “The Wedding Singer” is the perfect gentle yet sassy rom-com that could only be a product of the 90s. When Robbie, a wedding singer, meets Julia their friendship slowly reveals that they have both fallen for the wrong people. Gracing the pod today is actress, D'Arcy Carden, to gush over the film's cutest moments on top of Drew's life in the spotlight and her evolution as an actress and public figure. As a child star, Barrymore embodied Hollywood royalty for better or worse, but has since successfully solidified her legacy as a genuine and loveable star. “The Wedding Singer” is the cheesy will-they-won't-they that capitalizes on undeniable chemistry and underdog romance to rank as a fan favorite in Barrymore's canon of Blockbuster hits.  Watch “The Wedding Singer” on HBO Max until December 31, 2022 and “Grey Gardens” on HBO via HBO Max.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Sports is the universal language so certainly, as a woman, sports has been able to bring me into many different conversations and has opened up so many doors for me.” - Marnie Schneider Marnie Schneider comes from football royalty. Her grandfather, Leonard Tose, was the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and creator of the Ronald McDonald House. Her mother Susan shattered glass ceilings as the first and only woman to be legal counsel, General Manager, and Vice President of a professional football team. Growing up in this family, Marnie spent a lot of time traveling to games on a plane. One day on a flight back to Philadelphia her Walkman ran out of batteries and her mom said, “Here's a notepad. Start writing.” And so she did. On that flight she came up with the idea for her first book Football Freddie and Fumble the Dog. Now, she has turned the idea into an 8-book series, Gameday in the USA. Each book follows the loveable characters Football Freddie and Fumble the Dog as they travel to different cities learning about various NFL teams and the rich history and culture of each city. The books are a hit with kids and encourage them to experience the joy of reading, sports, and traveling to new cities. In this episode, Marnie talks about the process of creating children's books, embracing the challenges of being a caregiver to her mother with dementia and parent of a child diagnosed with cancer, the importance of giving back and being a cheerLEADER for others, and what it takes to embody that sports mentality and create a winning game plan to go after your dreams. She also talks about her appearance as Joyce the flight attendant in my favorite movie of all time, The Wedding Singer! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomgirltv/support

Looking to reinvent her image after starring in a string of lowbrow erotic thrillers throughout the 1990's, Drew Barrymore grew passionate about a script that reframed the Cinderella story through the lenses of historical fiction and third wave feminism. The resulting Ever After was a commercial hit that charmed millions of millennial girls and led to Barrymore starring in a series of warm, bubbly romcoms like The Wedding Singer (1998), Never Been Kissed (1999), and 50 First Dates (2004). Ryan is joined by Kat for a lengthy discussion about this underrated gem. Subjects in the dialogue include how the film stock gives Ever After a certain look, why Anjelica Huston's performance underlies the struggles of women under patriarchy, Megan Dodds' status as Ever After's secret weapon, how Ever After compares to other prominent Cinderella films, the weird relationship this movie has to Thomas More's Utopia, and the allure of a Cinderella story where the main character rescues herself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

Book Vs. Movie: ElectionThe 1998 Novel Vs. the 1999 FilmThe Margos have had the Tom Perrotta novel Election on their list to cover since the podcast began in 2008, but for some reason--it was not made available until this summer. Who could forget Reese Witherspoon's performance as Tracy Flick? Matthew Broderick's last line in the Alexander Payne movie? The story is about an ambitious woman who will win her high school presidential campaign no matter what made Witherspoon a star. Her character became an avatar for people who tried too hard and were overbearing. Tracy believes she will easily win the election, not counting one of her teachers (Mr. M.) has it in for her; one of her fellow students is doing it as a goof (nice, but not very bright Paul Warren) while his sister (Tammy) is doing it in retaliation against Paul's girlfriend Lisa (who used to date Tammy.) The teacher who has sex with Tracy (while his wife is pregnant!) loses his job, which makes Mr. M. angry, and he feels he needs to rob her of an election win. Now that there is a new Perrotta novel, a sequel called Tracy Flick Can't Win, is it time to have a new look at not only her character but also the plot in the first place? Who were the villains here? Why does Mr. M. hate her so much? The Margos have so much to unpack here! This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and the novel Twice a Quinceaňera by Yamile Saied Méndez.“This book will set your dreams on fire” –praise for Yamile Saied Mendez by Reese Witherspoon for Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez.Instead of losing the deposit on her wedding venue, a jilted bride decides to throw herself a quinceañera (times two) for her 30th birthday in this effervescent rom-com from Yamile Saied Méndez, the acclaimed author of the Reese Witherspoon YA Book Club Pick FURIA. Chelsea is out of a wig and in a full sweat as she and Donny are joined by that bitch (and future wedding MC) from Instagram, Christian Gray Snow, to recap the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore classic, "The Wedding Singer" and bond over Princess Diana merch. Her dad has food poisoning, Donny is making Beanie Babies have sex, and Christian understands why abortion would be mentioned in a wedding speech. Also, Christian and Donny share their taste in (terrible) men while Chelsea gets feminasty about those same men. Finally, Donny finally loses his mind about Chelsea's face blindness and the Cuties share their worst wedding stories. Book Vs. Movie: Barefoot in the ParkThe 1963 Neil Simon Play Vs. the 1967 Robert Redford & Jane Fonda FilmThe Margos love a good love story with beautiful people and funny writing. Barefoot in the Park by playwright Neil Simon is a story about two young lovebirds who live in New York City as newlyweds and are trying to find their way in the 1960s. It was Simon's longest Broadway hit and had several adaptations over the years. Corie (played by Jane Fonda in the movie) is a “free spirit” married to Paul (Robert Redford, who originated the role on Broadway) and plays a handsome square/lawyer who wonders if life with Corie ultimately makes sense. Her mother (Mildred Natwick) meets their “upstairs” neighbor Victor and helps Paul see that maybe he can learn to loosen up.So between the two, which did we like more? The play or the movie? For fans of Never Been Kissed, 13 Going on 30, and The Wedding Singer…con azucar y amor. One month short of her wedding day—and her thirtieth birthday—Nadia Palacio finds herself standing up to her infuriating, cheating fiancé for the first time in…well, ever. But that same courage doesn't translate to breaking the news to her Argentinian family. She's hyperventilating before facing them when she glimpses a magazine piece about a Latina woman celebrating herself—with a second quinceañera, a.k.a. Sweet 15! The Wedding Singer. We've all seen the movie with Adam Sandler. But in the real world, being in a wedding band is more than just playing the first dance. It's about not only having the right setlist, but also having the right members of the band, the right production, and the right mindset when it comes to doing business. Mike Zabrin is doing all of that and more. Originating from his original music band, Mike Zabrin's Funktastic, he performs every year on WGN Midday News, WGN's Nick Digilio Show, and with notable write ups in Bass Player Magazine, Jazz Corner, and hundreds of world-wide publications. His albums feature members of Kool & The Gang, Fishbone, and more.   A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Mike had his start playing the blues, Throughout college, he toured with Chicago Blues Hall of Famers playing at staple blues venues like Kingston Mines and Buddy Guy's Legends. During this time, and an advocate for music education, Mike was the GM of School of Rock. Mike took his band to hundreds of venues and festivals. Over 40 Park Districts have Funktastic for their Summer Concert Series and they've opened for national acts like WAR. Having the best musicians Chicago has to offer under his wing, Mike took the wedding and corporate event industry by storm with his company, Funktastic Productions. www.funktasticproductions.com www.funktasticchats.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (except during pandemics, then it's pretty much been accomplished VIA Zoom or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's dining room… and there have been a few that have survived). We're celebrating Hot Sauce Steve's birthday with the 1998 hit that marked Adam Sandler's transition to romantic comedies: "The Wedding Singer." In many ways, "The Wedding Singer" was a sign of things to come for Sandler: co-starring with a possibly concussed Drew Barrymore, more subdued roles, nostalgia and mom-safe jokes. But there were still flashes of the Saturday Night Live legend we saw in "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore": the 90ish-minute runtime, the non-sequiturs, and the cameos.  Weddings are the topic of the week in this episode, with the Shat Crew discussing pre-wedding jitters, the cost of weddings, and how much of a role the groom should play. We also discuss Adam Sandler's singing, whether Linda got a bad rap, what constitutes cheating, and how well we can spot a freak in the sheets when we seem her in the streets. To top it all off, Ving Rhames calls in to discuss "Blood In Blood Out" and Big D gets passionate about vanilla ice cream. My guests today are writers Bob Martin & Chad Beguelin. Bob Martin is perhaps best known as the co-creator and original star (The Man In The Chair) of the hit Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone. He also co-created what I think is one of the greatest and most hilarious TV series of all time, Slings & Arrows. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend that you find it and stream it immediately! Chad Beguelin is a six-time Tony nominee who wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musicals The Wedding Singer and Disney's Aladdin. Together Bob and Chad collaborated on ELF: The Musical as well as the show they joined me to talk about on this week's podcast – The Prom. The Prom is currently on tour across America and opens at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater – my old stomping grounds – on May 31st. Then over the summer it will play San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Bloomington, IN, and Buffalo, NY. In this episode Bob and Chad take us inside the creation, and eight-year development of The Prom, including the real events that inspired it. They give us at least a hint about the real people that some of the leading characters are modeled on. More on that below.  They also share the incredible impact that the story and themes of this show have had, and continue to have, on the audiences who see it.  In several previous episodes I have explored the question of whether any work of art – especially an upbeat musical comedy – can actually become a force for positive, tangible social or political change? As you will hear, this is one show where I can definitively say that the answer is, yes!   After you have listened, I have a challenge to you! If you think you know which real life theatrical personalities the characters of Dee Dee Allen, Barry Glickman, and might be based on please message me on Instagram (david@broadwaynation), Twitter (@PodastBroadway), or best of all join our Broadway Nation Facebook Group where you will find more than 2000 other fans of this podcast.  I can't promise that I'll be able to verify the winning guesses but it will certainly be fun seeing who you think might have inspired them!s Learn more about your ad choices.
