Interviewees: Drs. Megan Brown and Jo Hartland Interviewer: Dr. Lisa Meeks Description: In this episode, podcast co-host Lisa Meeks had the privilege of hearing from Drs. Megan Brown and Jo Harland, two UK physicians with disabilities, who collaborated on a thought-provoking poem critiquing disability inclusion in the medical field. In this poem reading, Drs. Brown and Hartland challenge the narrative of "overcoming" and "inspiration porn" often associated with disabled individuals. They emphasize the importance of embracing one's true identity and resisting the pressure to conform to societal expectations. Reminding us that disabled individuals should not have to prove their worth above others and deserve to be valued for who they are. The poem also highlights the ongoing struggle faced by disabled healthcare professionals in securing necessary accommodations in their work environments. It sheds light on the burden placed on individuals to constantly fight for their needs and the importance of organizations recognizing and addressing these challenges. Listeners will gain deeper insights into the experiences of disabled healthcare professionals and the critical issues surrounding disability inclusion in the medical field. Stephanie welcomes Megan B. Brown, founder and executive director of MilSpo Co (Military Spouse Coalition), a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing Christ with the military communities worldwide. Megan shares her own story, her heart, and passion for building the Kingdom of God in original, powerful ways. This conversation will stretch, inspire, and challenge you! Megan says, "MilSpo Co. is a place where people can meet Jesus, engage in life-giving community, and everyone is welcome. We believe in creating a space where people can have authentic encounters with Christ, discover their gifts and use them for God's glory." MilSpo Co. began with a commitment to see military spouses gain access points to the gospel through getting connected, building a faith community, and to develop the skill of walking out their faith as they moved from place to place. Nearly a decade ago, a handful of military spouses began gathering around the Word of God in a military housing neighborhood. Their goal was simple: to know God and learn how to make Him known. The result was immense. These women were learning how to create friendships, building relationships inside of their local church, and starting to see how God would use their lifestyles to serve Him as missionaries. MilSpo Co.'s Founder, Megan Brown, began leading small and intimate Bible studies from her living room. What began with six women at Keesler AFB on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi has now become a ground movement. Women all over the globe are now meeting in homes, serving inside of the church, and using their gifts for the glory of God. The next step in mission for MilSpo Co. is to continue to raise up leaders in the military spouse space. By raising up indigenous leaders in the military spouse community who are directly connected to the local church, women in this space can lead others into meaningful connections, biblical community in the family of God, and facilitate their discipleship toward the task of fulfilling the Great Commission. ABOUT MILSPOCO Megan is a seasoned military spouse, mother of four, and military missionary. Graduating from Moody Bible Institute with a Bachelor's of Science in Ministry Leadership with a focus in Ministry to Women, she is passionate about leading women to pursue fulfilling The Great Commission. MilSpo Co. exists to intentionally disciple the U.S. Armed Forces through recruiting, raising up, and releasing an army of military spouses as paid and prepared vocational missionaries. These women are sent in partnership with the local church, collaborate with civilian communities for evangelism, and are ready to serve God at operational military installations worldwide.
