Fish you wear like a gas mask, moss that turns a robot sentient and critters that will eat your rash – all these oddities and more cohabit on the planet Vesta, the setting for the animated miniseries Scavengers Reign, where a group of human space travellers must innovate with what they find in the landscape to survive. While all this sounds fantastical, there are many parallels with Earth's ecosystem and the way we regularly borrow technology from the natural world. New Scientist physics reporter Karmela Padavic-Callaghan often writes about biomimicry and bio-inspired devices and has been fascinated by the symbiotic, connected ecosystem the show portrays. In this episode, they speak to biophysicist Saad Bhamla and ecologist Meghan Brown about the the science that underpins the series and how surprisingly close to reality some of the ecological interactions are. With a booking agent and a wedding band leader for parents, this is Meghan's journey from a Music Business major to the director of content & B2b education at The Knot Worldwide. We talk about what it means to be the face of a brand and planning out content, to marketing strategies you can utilize right now to make the most of 2021.Originally a Jazz major at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Meghan is a lifelong musician who made it her business to help other wedding pros reach success. You may have seen Meghan hosting webinars on Weddingpro, or chatting with different guests on Weddingpro's Instagram. Music, in general, stems from collaboration, and in turn how musicians can have an advantage in business because we are naturally so collaborative. Meghan is a proven example that resilience and hard work will get you as far as you can dream of. From being an assistant for an events team to an interior designer to an economics research firm, she learned to be the face of the brand of Two Bright Lights, which is a photo submission and publication platform. All of these different roles took thick skin, resilience, and dedication. If you work in the wedding or events industry, it's safe to say you know just how important getting published is. It allows for your work to get exposure and for your name to get out there into the world. 95% of couples use blogs and magazines to plan their wedding, and publications are the way to get in front of those couples. But the process can be daunting—and not to mention time consuming. Researching which publication will be a good fit, compiling images, getting content from your client… all for potential rejection that will leave you back at square one. That's where my guest on the podcast today steps in! Meghan Brown is the manager of Two Bright Lights, a submissions platform that allows photographer and vendors to submit images of their event for publication. The genius behind her company is that you just have to fill out one submissions package! They partner with 100s of publications for just about anything and everything, and you can submit to as many of them as you want with just a couple of clicks. It has truly revitalized and changed the way publications are submitted!

We all know it's important to get your work published, but how do we actually make it happen? What benefits are there to seeing your work featured in publications? On today's episode, we're joined by Meghan Stolar Brown, director of Two Bright Lights and How They Asked, as she leads us through the wonderful world of publishing. She is sharing what editors are looking for, what to avoid when submitting your work to get published, and how Two Bright Lights can help you streamline the process. The Importance of Getting Your Work Published Getting your work published adds to your client experience. For example, you can wow your couples by getting their wedding featured in a magazine or blog. They will be super excited to see and share with their friends. It gets your work in front of potential clients too. It serves as an unbiased reference for your work. The editor is vouching for all the work behind it. Another bonus to getting your work published are the SEO benefits. The more backlinks you have in other websites, the higher your ranking becomes! What Editors Look For When you are crafting a submission, editors are looking for a lot of details. They want details in things they can write about. Publishers need to be able to write about it. Using the wedding photography example again, submit 70% details and 30% with people. This helps tell the story of the day. They want to be able to inspire their readers and by showing a story, they can! You also need to include all the people that helped on the event or the wedding. You need to give credit where credit is due. What Happens When Your Work is Rejected for a Publication You might not know the reason why your work wasn't accepted. Sometimes it has nothing to do with your talent and everything to do with what the editor is looking for during that time. Make sure you research publications before you submit anything to them. Make sure your style fits with their style. If your work is rejected, find another publication. There is a publication for everyone, so don't get discouraged. You'll find the perfect fit for you and your work. If you’ve been around Denver for more than a few years, you may have noticed that the city is rapidly changing. Have you ever wondered who and what created your neighborhood? Did you know that, for many residents, there is currently a housing crisis, as property costs have grown, while income has not? What does the Bible have to say about land, housing, and cities? Housing issues are inextricably related to education, race, and socioeconomics, and if we don’t understand the history of where we live, it’s difficult to love our neighbors well. This conversation led by DPC member Meghen Brown provided education to participants about the racial history of Northeast Denver, as well as look at the people and events that have shaped Denver, particularly northeast Denver, over the past 50 years. The conversation explored how housing policy and market forces have shaped our community, including segregation, discrimination, and gentrification. She also critiqued the two opposite extremes of the “free market” approach and the “social justice” approach to housing, and present a new way of addressing problems: through a more nuanced, hopeful, gospel-informed grid. Meghan Brown is a Tax Credit Officer at Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) who grew up in the area and has worked with various urban ministries, nonprofits, and local and state governments. Meghan will be co-presenting with her CHFA colleague Kim Martin, First Lady of Zion Temple Church, a NE Denver native, and active with the National Organization for African-Americans in Housing and Metro Denver Fair Housing Task Force.

As our show grows, we are lucky to have more & more guest hosts who are interested in coming on the show & sharing about their companies and how they can help photographers with their business! This week we are joined by Meghan Brown of Two Bright Lights! In case you're unaware, Two Bright Lights is an online publishing platform that helps photographers get published both in online blogs & in print! It's a GREAT resource and super easy to use! Meghan chatted with us about some benefits of getting published, as well as some publication tips to help your work get published through a site like Two Bright Lights! Tune in for all of her awesome tips, but here are a few highlights!! Key Takeaways: Two Bright Lights breakdown: Meghan chats a bit about how TBL works... once you have an account, you create an album (up to 150 images) from your event or photoshoot (they accept pretty much any type of shoot!), and then you can select which blogs, websites, magazine, etc you'd like to submit to. You have all the power over this part! Once your shoot is accepted, you'll be notified through the system about which blog/magazine picked it up, and you'll be notified again when it's published. It really couldn't be easier & they also have tons of publication tips on their website to help you out! Styled Shoots: Styled shoots are SUPER popular for publication right now! Potential brides (and families, for family shoots) want to see awesome details that they can add to their own wedding or shoot. Plus, it's an easy way for the photographer to make sure he/she grabs TONS of detail shots (because you don't have to work around someone else's hectic schedule!). What are some Benefits of Getting Published? Establishes Credibility: Not only does getting published LOOK really cool, it helps establish credibility both among other photographers & among potential clients. Clients see your work, know you're reliable, and can also look forward to potentially being part of a published wedding or shoot themselves if they hire you! SEO: The more your name (and your work) is floating around the internet, the better your SEO results will be! This is especially true if you submit to very popular, high-traffic websites and blogs... the better their SEO is, the better yours will be! Social Media: When TBL promotes something, they tag the photographer (and the rest of the vendors!). So your name will pop up multiple times on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They also do all the work for you hashtag-wise, so you'll be easy to find in a search! The blog/magazine itself will likely tag you too... so your name will be all over the place & easy for potential clients to find! Do Your Research: Take a day or two to browse around blogs & websites (and their Instagram feeds!) to see which sites match your style of photography & what potential clients you're looking for! Remember, this is another great way to weed potential clients down into the PERFECT ones for your style & personality! Don't submit weddings or shoots to blogs when you have no interest in repeating that style. Shoot with the Story in Mind: This is one of our favorite publication tips! It particularly applies to weddings... as you're shooting, keep a potential publication story in mind. Make sure you grab TONS of detail shots (that's what publishers LOVE), and make sure you seek out images that tell the story of the day. It doesn't hurt to also try to color coordinate your photos with the wedding colors. For example, if the colors are blue & purple, try to get an awesome shot of the wedding rings on top of some pretty purple flowers at the venue in front of the bright blue sky. This is a great way to tie additional photos into a blog post or publication post! Thanks for tuning in to another episode! We hope you enjoyed Meghan's publication tips!
