LEXINGTON, Ky. (November 7, 2024) – The interconnectedness of Black arts and cultural institutions is essential to the mission of community impact and affecting change. That's one of the observations made by University of Kentucky Assistant Professor Jaleesa Wells, Ph.D., from the Department of Arts Administration. For 12 months — from June 2023 through May 2024 — Wells explored the relationships between three East Okland, California, arts organizations: Artist as First Responder, Black Cultural Zone and Eastside Arts Alliance.  “The crux of my project was interviewing the stakeholders, interviewing their community members, board members, artists and the community that they interacted with,” Wells said.  Those groups were cultural institutions, she said, that went beyond the confines of their respective physical spaces.  On this edition of “Behind the Blue,” Tom Musgrave of UK Public Relations and Strategic Communications and Shauna Morgan, Ph.D., an associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in UK's Department of English Creative Writing Division, join Wells to discuss her exploration of those three groups and how she is applying what she's learned to her work at UK.  ‘Behind the Blue' is available via a variety of podcast providers, including iTunes and Spotify. The University of Kentucky is increasingly the first choice for students, faculty and staff to pursue their passions and their professional goals. In the last two years, Forbes has named UK among the best employers for diversity, and INSIGHT into Diversity recognized us as a Diversity Champion four years running. UK is ranked among the top 30 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK has been judged a “Great College to Work for" three years in a row, and UK is among only 22 universities in the country on Forbes' list of "America's Best Employers." We are ranked among the top 10 percent of public institutions for research expenditures — a tangible symbol of our breadth and depth as a university focused on discovery that changes lives and communities. And our patients know and appreciate the fact that UK HealthCare has been named the state's top hospital for five straight years. Accolades and honors are great. But they are more important for what they represent: the idea that creating a community of belonging and commitment to excellence is how we honor our mission to be not simply the University of Kentucky, but the University for Kentucky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 16, 2020) – In 1918, as the United States sent troops to the Western Front for the final months of World War I, an influenza pandemic raged across the globe, infecting nearly a quarter of the world’s population of around 500 million at that time. The death toll was immense, with estimates anywhere from 17-50 million, and some as high as 100 million lives lost. The University of Kentucky was not immune to this deadly pandemic and in response turned its gymnasium, now known as Buell Armory, into a makeshift hospital with help from the Red Cross. Terry L. Birdwhistell, senior oral historian in the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at UK Libraries, has a personal connection to the 1918 flu pandemic, due to his own family being impacted. “Back then in Anderson County,” Birdwhistell says, “a farm family would have six, eight, 10 kids, to work the farm. I always thought it was odd that my father was an only child, coming out of that environment.” Birdwhistell says his mother told him in later years, “your grandmother had the flu that year, she was pregnant and she lost the baby, and she couldn’t have any more children. It put it all in perspective.” On this special edition of “Behind the Blue,” Kody Kiser and Carl Nathe of UK Public Relations and Strategic Communications talk with Birdwhistell about life at the time of the 1918 influenza pandemic, how the university and community responded, the unique roles our university presidents played both then and now, and more. LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 29, 2020) – The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new illness that was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, with patients reporting cases of fever and acute respiratory illness. Since that time, other countries, including the U.S., have seen cases of the illness. As a diverse and globally engaged research institution with a world-class academic medical center, the University of Kentucky has been closely monitoring developments related to the COVID-19 outbreak and their potential impacts on the university community. The health and safety of our faculty, staff and students is our highest priority. On the academic side, UK is one of many universities to move its classes online using channels such as Zoom – a video conferencing platform – as part of an effort to reduce the number of people on campus. It’s all part of a plan to use ‘social distancing’ to minimize exposure to the virus throughout the community, in order to reduce the case load hospitals may face at any one time. This helps alleviate an overload in the need for beds, personal protective gear, ventilators, and other medical equipment and resources. On this week’s edition of the “Behind the Blue” podcast, Kody Kiser and Carl Nathe of UK Public Relations and Strategic Communications talks with UK Chief Communications Officer Jay Blanton about the work being undertaken across campus, UK HealthCare, and across the Commonwealth to adapt to these challenging conditions, work to save lives, and continue to be Kentucky’s indispensable institution. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 10, 2019) – The world of pediatric cancer treatment has seen huge advancements in treatments over the past 60 years – in the 1950s, less than 10 percent of children were cured of their cancer. Today, the number of survivors is nearly 80 percent. However, that still means that one in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. Many childhood cancers can be extremely difficult to treat, and research is key to developing new, better therapies for these diseases.  Ramon Sun, an assistant professor in the UK Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, is one researcher embarking on an exciting new project in pediatric cancer – specifically, Ewing Sarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer that often occurs in the bones or the soft tissue surrounding bones and affects children and young adults typically between the ages of 5 and 16. Sun was recently awarded a significant grant to study Ewing Sarcoma from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. The award will fund his work at $110,000 a year for up to the next five years. With this new grant, Sun will specifically investigate the role of aberrant glycogen in patients with Ewing Sarcoma and explore this glycogen as a therapeutic target. Sun sees the award as not just a coveted accolade, but a chance to identify a potential new cure for Ewing Sarcoma – there have been no new therapeutic options approved to treat Ewing Sarcoma in the past 20 years, and patients who undergo chemotherapy and radiation for the disease may experience lifelong side effects from their treatment. The disease is in desperate need of research and development of new therapeutic options, Sun says, and the St. Baldrick’s grant will further that goal by focusing on a specific angle of the disease – the role of aberrant glycogen in cancer development. “Ewing sarcoma is a devastating disease, where aggressive treatments are met with poor disease outcomes,” Sun said. “One of the key observations of Ewing Sarcoma made back in the 1930s is the accumulation of a large amount of glycogen – these tumors store a large amount of aberrant glycogen, and that accumulation has gone largely unexplored. My research aims to understand the reason behind this glycogen accumulation and exploit the glycogen deposits as a possible drug target for treating Ewing Sarcoma.” On this week’s episode of Behind the Blue, UK Public Relations and Strategic Communications' Allison Perry and Kody Kiser sit down with both Sun and UK hematologist/oncologist Dr. John D’Orazio to talk about pediatric cancer in Kentucky, the magic of DanceBlue, future goals for this Ewing Sarcoma project, and why research funding is so important in helping scientists develop newer, better cures for cancer. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2019) — This year marks the 70th year of integration at the University of Kentucky, due to the efforts of Lyman T. Johnson, who broke the color barrier with his successful legal challenge in 1949. As progress has been made since that time, more can be and will be done. On this edition of the "Behind the Blue" podcast, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto sat down with UK Public Relations and Strategic Communications intern Aaron Porter Jr. and discussed the importance of Lyman T. Johnson's historic action, the progress the school has made, and more room for improvement in the areas of belonging and diversity on UK's campus. Johnson forced open the doors of the University of Kentucky by becoming the first African-American student. He, along with countless others, opened a door and created a path for us to follow. It’s the idea that anyone -- regardless of who they are, the color of their skin, what they believe, how they identify themselves, or where they are from – can find a place at the University of Kentucky. Yet, our story demands that we acknowledge that progress on this path has not been a straight line. There have been moments where we have, as an institution, not honored our aspirations. Those moments provide a compelling reminder that building a community of belonging is a journey, not a project. This month, as part of Black History Month, we are chronicling the stories of the trailblazers, innovators and champions, who bravely stepped forward or are prodding us ahead today. Their stories speak to us and guide us still.
