“If Elves indeed still dwell here in this darkening world.” We're back! For a special festive episode where we explore the symbolism of gift giving in Lothlorien.  Every member of the Fellowship is given a parting gift by the Lady of the Light. Does she know what will befall them all? What do her gifts symbolise and how do they shape the narrative as the Fellowship cracks at the Falls of Rauros?  From Galadriel's gift of the Light of Eärendil, we take a whistle stop tour through the history of Elvendom on Middle Earth. We discuss the Eldar, the people of the stars, those born under the night skies in the First Age of Beleriand. The ones who chose to stay in the dark realm of Middle Earth rather than follow the call to go to the undying lands. It's a beautiful choice. To stay in the land of decay, decomposition and disintegration. And the choice is an astonishing one when you yourself are immortal.  We honour the choice to stay and fade with every passing season. We live in a society which would have us turn always towards the light, to distract from the deadening expanse of the landscape. But there is something soul making in our choice to dissolve with the fading light.  As soon as we trust in winter, we can trust in the return of the spring.  May this Solstice bless you all with the shimmering dark.  “May it be a light for you in dark places, where all other lights go out.” If you'd love to geek out with us, reach out to fortheshire.pod@gmail.com or follow us on @fortheshire.pod on Instagram.  Co-hosted by Molly Davis and Libby Rose Waite. For the Shire: Coming Home Through Tolkien, Tarot and Jung

"... modest, fair-minded and scrupulously just, and very merciful"... I am sure I did not invent him. I did not even want him, though I like him". Tolkien on Faramir Faramir emerges suddenly from the shadows of Ithilien towards the latter part of The Two Towers. We've never before heard of him by name, have had no warning of his presence running up to this moment and in some ways... he serves little narrative purpose. Or does he? In this episode, we explore Faramir as an expression of unconscious energy itself. A bridge between worlds. The steward of an ancestry that encompasses the promised strength of the world of men. And though it is Aragorn who returns to the throne of that world, it is Faramir who steps aside to place him there. Perhaps stepping aside for what is good and just is the strongest thing any of us can do. "For myself, I would see the White Tree in flower again in the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace." "Hail the victorious dead" 3 March 3019, The Battle for Helm's Deep It is just before dawn. The hour when it is always darkest. Theoden King waits in the Hornburg. The screams of his men have lessened through the night as the Uruk Hai have silenced them in their droves. Theoden hears the brutal thuds of club on wood, as they begin battering down the door, crying "bring out your king!". "What are men to do in the face of such hate?" It seems a perfect time... for a tarot reading. Join us in this episode for a tarot reading for Théoden Ednew in memory of the beloved Bernard Hill. Our brother, our captain, our King. "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path. One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... then you see it!" Being together and seeing Return of the King live in the Royal Albert Hall, undoubtedly added layers of depth to the experience. In this episode, we explore themes that resonate not only within the world of Middle-earth but also within our own lives and the broader context of the world.  We discuss endings and life cycles, from the perspective of both the macrocosm of the trilogy but also the individuation journeys of our beloved characters. As Gandalf eloquently puts it, the journey doesn't truly end with death. He speaks to the cyclical nature of existence, where endings often mark the beginning of something new. In the macrocosm of the trilogy, we witness the culmination of the struggle against darkness and the ushering in of a new era of peace. However, this victory is not without sacrifice, emphasising the bittersweet reality of endings. On an individual level, the characters' journeys mirror the process of individuation and personal growth. Each character undergoes trials and transformations, ultimately finding their place in the world and within themselves. From Frodo's burden of carrying the One Ring to Aragorn's acceptance of his destiny as the rightful king, these arcs reflect the complexities of the human experience and the paths we must navigate to find fulfilment and purpose.  The lighting of the Beacons of Gondor symbolises a beacon of hope amidst despair, a rallying call to unite against overwhelming odds. In the context of our discussion on contemporary issues such as the ongoing conflict in Palestine and our own activism, these moments resonate deeply. They serve as reminders of the power of hope in the face of adversity and the importance of collective action in striving for a better future. It was a busy weekend for Iowa Basketball and Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann have you covered from both the Hawkeye men and women are concerned. We open the pod with a long discussion of our day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday watching Caitlin Clark and Iowa knock off Ohio State. We talk about Clark setting the all-time scoring mark for a player in NCAA D1 competition and what it means.  We also dive into the game and the unfortunate injury to starting guard Molly Davis. If she is out, how will Iowa fill that void? Who can step in and who needs to step up? Then we look at Iowa's road in the Big Ten Tournament, which will get underway for the Hawkeyes on Friday late afternoon. Then we move over to the Iowa men, who picked up a huge road win on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. We look at how the Hawkeyes were able to hold off the Wildcats down the stretch and the strong development of Josh Dix as a scorer in the last couple of weeks and how that has helped Iowa in their recent run. We also talk about the three key possessions down the stretch for Iowa in the victory. Finally we wrap up looking at what it will take for the Hawkeyes to get off the bubble and firmly into the NCAA Tournament once again this year.  Finally we finish up talking about the struggling Iowa baseball team. They dropped two of three at Ole Miss this weekend once again it was the bullpen that was the cause of their struggles. Can this be fixed in the short term and what do we think about the hitting so far this season? We also look at the upcoming schedule for Iowa, starting with a home game on Tuesday.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Molly Davis, a seasoned therapist and the brilliant mind behind the Boundaries Bootcamp, where she takes us through her inspiring journey of self-discovery and business evolution.  Molly's approach to cultivating community in the online space is truly unique! From creating cartoons for “Boundary Bootcamps,” Molly saw rapid growth in her community (while never ‘showing her face on social media') and business as soon as she embraced her authentic self. She also shares the biggest takeaways from joining the Brand Mastery Mastermind, and the pivotal transformations she saw not only within her business, but also herself.  KEY POINTS: - Molly's journey from a therapist to the creator of Boundaried Bootcamp - How Molly uses cartoons instead of herself to show up for and cultivate her online community  - The power of authenticity and staying true to yourself in the online space  - How Molly's decision to trust her instincts led her to a transformative mastermind experience - Finding the right mastermind opportunity for you  - Molly's biggest takeaways from her mastermind experience  - What to expect from the next Boundaried Bootcamp  QUOTABLES: “The only thing standing in your way is you." - Molly Davis “There are people who hum to the same tune that you're strong to, and that when you do it your way, all the people who are like you are going to have a life changing experience.” - Molly Davis “You'll never get to the part where it's great and easy, and you know what you're doing, unless you take the step first.” - Molly Davis “I made a commitment to myself early on that I would be very authentic to myself, otherwise there was no point.” - Molly Davis “Everything is working out for you even when it's not working out for you. And there's really no failures. It's just I either grow and this is a great experience, or I learn something very, very valuable that I now can take with me that is then going to allow me to grow and be successful.” - Julie Solomon [APPLICATIONS OPEN]

We didn't know where this episode would take us. But of course, we ended up in the liminal. The eagle flying between the solar light of consciousness and the first sliver of the young moon. The hairs on the back of necks rising in the space between the lifting fog and the starless sky. The hesitation between being repulsed and reaching out in awe. We explore two dreams, one of Frodo's and one of a listener's.  We look for what is at threat of being lost. Where we can listen to inner guidance to point us to what we already know. How we can let our fingertips plunge ever deeper into the fertile soil of the Dreamworld. You can listen to the Dream Nidra from Lothlorien here. "His house was perfect, whether you liked food or sleep, or work, or storytelling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all… all of them, the ponies as well, grew refreshed and strong in a few days there. Their clothes were mended as well as their bruises, their tempers and their hopes. Their bags were filled with food and provisions, light to carry, but strong to bring them over the mountain passes." - JRR Tolkien, The Hobbit If you are feeling despair, if you are wearied, if you are afraid… meet us in the house of Elrond Half Elven. Where we still linger, after landing here three chapters ago. But why would we leave, when we are surrounded by healing, hearth and hope. In this episode, we explore the bridge between past and future, myth and reality, mortality and immortality. This chapter is dedicated to Elrond. A complex character and we move between worlds, books and the major arcana as we attempt to do justice to this essential Tolkien archetype.  Co-hosted by Molly Davis and Libby Rose Waite. NBA – Chris Ford, champ as player, coach with Celtics, dies at 74 Chris Ford, a member of the Boston Celtics 1981 championship team, a longtime NBA coach and the player credited with scoring the league's first 3-point basket, has died at the age of 74. His family announced his death in a statement issued by the Celtics. No official cause was given, but the statement said Ford died Tuesday. The Press of Atlantic City reported he died in Philadelphia after suffering a heart attack earlier this month. Ford was voted the team's MVP in his first season with Boston. He retired following the 1981-82 season and was an assistant coach for the Celtics for seven seasons from 1983 to 1990, helping coach former teammates Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to two titles in 1984 and 1986. NFL – Bears Getsy, Raiders Graham to coach Senior Bowl teams Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will serve as Senior Bowl head coaches. The Senior Bowl says Getsy will coach the American team and Graham the National team in the Feb. 4 showcase game for senior and graduate NFL prospects. The Bears have the top overall pick in April's draft, and the Raiders own the No. 7 selection. It's the first time the Senior Bowl won't have two full team staffs coaching the game. NFL Football Operations has implemented a “coach up” format to promote professional development for coordinators and other assistants. NFL – Bills, Bengals focus on playing with Hamlin home, recovering The Bills and Bengals can refocus on their next matchup now that Buffalo’s safety Damar Hamlin has shown remarkable signs in his recovery some three weeks after collapsing on the field in Cincinnati. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated in the first quarter of Buffalo’s since-canceled game against Cincinnati on Jan. 2. The teams meet in Buffalo on Sunday in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs. Bills coach Sean McDermott says his team has been uplifted by the sight of Hamlin starting to make regular visits to the team’s facility this week. WNBA – WNBA to play preseason game in Canada The WNBA will head north for a preseason game in Canada. The Chicago Sky will face the Minnesota Lynx on May 13 in Toronto. It will be the first WNBA game to be played in the country and the third WNBA preseason game to be played outside of the United States. In 2004, the Detroit Shock and San Antonio Silver Stars met in Monterrey, Mexico, and in 2011 the Atlanta Dream played the Standard Life Great Britain Women's basketball team in Manchester, England. FIFA – Witness: Bribes helped Fox execs get soccer TV rights The U.S. government's star witness in a big-money bribery case engulfing the world of soccer has begun testifying at the trial of two former Fox executives accused of paying bribes to rig the bidding process for broadcasting rights to two of the sport's biggest competitions. The trial in New York is the latest development in a tangled corruption scandal that dates back nearly a decade. The witness, Alejandro Burzaco, alleges that he and former Fox executives Hernan Lopez and Carlos Martinez conspired to bribe South American soccer officials for broadcasting rights to the Copa Libertadores and get inside information that helped them bid for the World Cup. Lawyers for Lopez and Martinez have asserted they are being framed. Tennis – American Jenson Brooksby beats No. 2 Ruud at Australian Open Jenson Brooksby has eliminated No. 2 seed Casper Ruud in four sets in the second round of the Australian Open. This upset comes a day after Mackenzie McDonald beat defending champion and No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal. So a pair of 20-something Californians have knocked out the top two players in the men's bracket at Melbourne Park. The 22-year-old Brooksby Brooksby is ranked 39th and is making his debut at the Australian Open. Ruud was the runner-up at the French Open to Nadal last June and at the U.S. Open to Carlos Alcaraz last September. American men Michael Mmoh, Ben Shelton, J.J. Wolf and Tommy Paul also advanced. But the highest seeded man from the U.S., No. 8 Taylor Fritz, lost. Tennis – Nadal MRI shows hurt left hip flexor; recovery of 6-8 weeks Rafael Nadal’s manager says the 22-time Grand Slam champion injured his left hip flexor during his loss at the Australian Open and could need about six to eight weeks to fully recover. Nadal had an MRI exam at a hospital in Melbourne under his doctor's supervision on Thursday. That was a day after Nadal got hurt during a straight-set exit against Mackenzie McDonald in the second round at Melbourne Park. Nadal was the defending champion and seeded No. 1 in Australia. The 36-year-old now will head home to Spain to rest. AHL – American Hockey League Last Night Grand Rapids Griffins 5, Rockford Ice Hogs 2 Chicago Wolves 6, Manitoba Moose 2 MCCAA – Junior College Athletics Last Night Women's Basketball Southwestern Michigan 56, Kellogg Community College 52 SMC had three starters score in double figures as the Roadrunners beat Kellogg CC 56-52.  Macey Laubach had a team high 14 points while Ariana Lemons and Cameron Thomas each had 12.  SMC was outscored 21-11 in the final quarter and held on for the conference win. Molly shares such wisdom about:*what are boundaries and how do you create them?*understanding the deeper motive for setting a boundary.*how to deal with the feelings of guilt when we set a boundary.*how to understand why we people please.*relationship boundary red flags.*what is co-dependency and how do we know if we're in a co-dependent relationship? To learn more about Molly, visit her website www.boundaried.com or on Instagram @boundariedbootcamp.I'd love to have you as a member of my community. Rodriguez lasted just one out and averaged 91.9 mph for his fastball, 2.4 mph below his season average, and left the mound with Tigers head athletic trainer Doug Teter. Drew Rasmussen allowed four hits in five shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, improving to 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA in his last five starts. Royals 6, White Sox 2 – Witt homers off Giolito, Melendez connects as KC tops Chisox Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez homered and fellow rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead triple to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Chicago White Sox 6-2. Witt, Melendez and Rivera each had two hits. Rivera’s sinking liner escaped a diving Adam Engel for a triple that drove in Melendez with the tiebreaking run in the sixth. In his return from the COVID-19-related injured list, Giolito labored early, needing 54 pitches to complete the first two innings, allowing four hits and two walks. After Witt’s leadoff homer in the third, Giolito struck out six of the next seven batters and permitted only a pair of singles before being lifted after five innings. Pirates 3, Cubs 2 – Chicago-born rookie Suwinski homers, lifts Pirates over Cubs Rookie Jack Suwinski, who attended high school 20 minutes from Wrigley Field, hit a tiebreaking home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cubs 3-2, ending Chicago’s four-game winning streak. Suwinski made his major league debut this season and began the day hitting .183 with two homers. With the score 2-all, the 23-year-old outfielder from Taft High School opened the fifth inning with a drive off Drew Smyly that barely cleared the center field wall. Michael Chavis’ single in the third snapped the Pirates’ scoreless streak of 20 innings. They scored in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Reds despite being no-hit by Hunter Greene and Art Warren, then lost 9-0 and 7-0 earlier this week at Wrigley Field. Orlando’s Franz Wagner and Houston’s Jalen Green were the other players chosen for the first team by a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. Barnes, the No. 4 pick by the Toronto Raptors, edged Mobley for the Rookie of the Year in the smallest margin under the current format that began in 2002-03. They both received 200 points in the All-Rookie balloting, along with Cunningham, the 2021 No. 1 pick. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Seattle Storm 74, Chicago Sky 71                 Storm 74, Sky 71 – Magbegor, Stewart power Storm to 74-71 win over Sky Ezi Magbegor scored 21 points, Breanna Stewart added 13 and the Seattle Storm beat the Chicago Sky 74-71. Magbegor added six rebounds and four assists, and Stewart had four steals for the Storm (2-3). Seattle led 74-62 after Gabby Williams’ 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining. Candace Parker scored the final seven points in a 9-0 Chicago run to close out the game. The Sky (2-2) had the ball with 9.1 seconds left, but Allie Quigley misfired on a 22-footer on the game’s final shot. Azura Stevens led Chicago with 18 points. Parker finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. NCAAWBKB – Central Michigan’s top scorer Molly Davis transfers to Iowa All-Mid-American Conference first-team pick Molly Davis of Central Michigan is transferring to Iowa. That word from Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder. The 5-foot-7 guard from Midland, Michigan, was a three-year starter for the Chippewas and led the team last season with 18.6 points and 4.7 assists per game. She has scored at least 10 points in 67 games, including a career-high 33 points against Ohio in the 2021 MAC Tournament semifinals. Davis will have two season of eligibility because of the COVID-19 bonus year. NCAAFB – Raise makes Ohio State’s Day one of highest-paid coaches Ohio State plans to hike Ryan Day’s annual salary to $9.5 million as part of a two-year contract extension that will put him among the nation’s highest-paid college football coaches. Day’s raise makes him the latest coach to crack $9 million per year, putting him in company with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and in line with recent megadeals given to Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and LSU’s Brian Kelly. In three seasons, Day has led the Buckeyes to a 34-4 record, including 23-1 in the Big Ten. NCAAFB – Saban calls out Texas A&M for using NIL deals to buy players Alabama coach Nick Saban called out Texas A&M, saying the school was “buying” players with name, image and likeness deals. The Aggies signed the top recruiting class in the country earlier this year. While speaking at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, Saban also mention Jackson State and Miami as schools that have used NIL deals to lure players. Jackson State coach Deion Sanders responded by calling Saban’s comments about a $1 million NIL deal for a highly touted recruit a lie. Saban said Alabama players earned more than $3 million from sponsorship and endorsement deals “the right way.” CFL – CFL, players’ union make tentative labor deal, ending strike The Canadian Football League and its players’ union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract, ending the second strike in CFL history. The league made the announcement Wednesday night. The contract must be ratified by both the CFL board of governors and the CFL Players’ Association. The new collective bargaining agreement comes four days after players with seven of the league’s nine teams did not show up for the start of training camp. Players with the two remaining teams would have been eligible to walk off the job Thursday. Soccer – US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men The U.S. Soccer Federation has reached milestone agreements to pay its men’s and women’s teams equally. That makes the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes completely matching compensation. The federation has announced separate collective bargaining agreements through 2028 with the unions for both national teams. The move ends years of often acrimonious negotiations. One of the main sticking points was World Cup prize money. The unions agreed to pool FIFA’s payments for the men’s World Cup this year and next year’s Women’s World Cup. It will also pool the 2026 and 2027 tournaments. Happy Friday folks! Although most of the attention around this time of year gets dedicated to bowl games, hoops season is just starting to heat up. This week on the podcast, we're taking a look back at the non-conference season in men's and women's basketball. We promise, we haven't forgotten about the bowl games! We'll have a full breakdown of all things bowls on next week's show. To kick off the show this week, Vannzee stops by to help us break down the men's basketball season to this point. Ohio has certainly lived up to expectations, while Akron and Bowling Green seem to be outpacing their pre-season predictions. Buffalo has been a bit underwhelming, though the Bulls certainly have the talent and experience to right the ship. Conference play begins on Tuesday the 28th, and these teams will start to separate from one another as we move further into conference play. To close out this weeks' show, Grant McPherson stops by to discuss women's hoops. Grant discusses Kent State's impressive performance through the seasons first six weeks, with quality wins against Penn State and UCLA. Central Michigan has had some unexpected struggles to start the year, and Grant explains why others on the Chippewas roster need to step up and help Molly Davis. As always, thanks for stopping by this week folks. We hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season, and we appreciate all of you. We'll see you back here next week! Workers like Olivia McKnight, a full-time Popeyes employee and mother of three, often struggle to get by even on wages above the federal minimum of $7.25, and those low-wage workers are disproportionately people of color. In Wisconsin, where the racial wealth and income gaps are some of the greatest in the nation, many feel raising the minimum is long overdue. Now, Democrats in the state are proposing a hike to $15 per hour for minimum wage workers, but face daunting political opposition from business interests and their Republican colleagues. Thanks to economist Phil Magness, I learned a new term today: "Faucism." It describes how public health bureaucracy is becoming a special interest group that seeks it's own perpetuation and expansion of its powers. This trend was predicted 170 years ago by Herbert Spencer. If the police are asking you for permission to search your vehicle, that's a pretty strong indicator that they don't have probable cause to be doing so. Libertas Institute policy analyst Molly Davis spells out why a routine traffic stop should be just that--and nothing more. Jon Miltimore is one of my favorite sources of content for this show. I should be paying him some kind of royalties for how much time he has saved me on show prep. His latest article is about what happens when the experts fail. It's a subject in which all of us are getting a graduate-level education. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support
